National Sports Day (Haornas): Tracing Indonesia’s Athletic Journey from the 1948 Solo PON to Modern-Day Wellness and Economic Drivers

by Jia Lissa
written by Jia Lissa

September 9 holds a profound and enduring significance in the annals of modern Indonesian history. Celebrated annually as Hari Olahraga Nasional (Haornas), or National Sports Day, this observance transcends a mere commemoration of athletic milestones; it represents a foundational pillar of national identity, resilience, and unity. The genesis of Haornas is deeply intertwined with the birth of the Pekan Olahraga Nasional (PON), the nation’s premier multi-sport event, which was inaugurated in Surakarta (Solo), Central Java, on September 9, 1948.

As Indonesia marks the 43rd anniversary of the official Haornas proclamation in 2026, the occasion serves as a critical juncture for reflection. It allows policymakers, athletes, and the general public to evaluate the trajectory of national sports development, assess the economic and health implications of an active populace, and look forward to upcoming spectacles such as the National Coastal Games in Ancol and the preparations for future multi-sport exhibitions like the 2028 PON in Sumba Timur, which aims to spotlight sport tourism.

The Historical Genesis: Defiance and Diplomacy Through Sport

To fully comprehend the weight of Hari Olahraga Nasional, one must examine the geopolitical and socio-economic landscape of Indonesia in 1948. Having proclaimed its independence on August 17, 1945, the young Republic was still fighting to secure international recognition of its sovereignty. The global diplomatic arena was fraught with obstacles, and traditional pathways to international integration were blocked by colonial remnants and bureaucratic friction.

A prime example of this diplomatic struggle occurred when Indonesia sought participation in the XIV Olympic Games, scheduled to be held in London, United Kingdom, in 1948. The fledgling republic faced severe administrative hurdles. International sports governing bodies, heavily influenced by the pre-war colonial order, did not fully recognize the nascent nation’s Olympic Committee. The newly formed Persatuan Olahraga Republik Indonesia (PURI)—the precursor to the modern Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI)—faced a dilemma: how to assert national existence on the global stage when denied standard diplomatic pathways.

The response was both pragmatic and revolutionary. Rather than conceding to international exclusion, Indonesian leaders, athletes, and sports pioneers decided to organize a domestic multi-sport competition that would rival the scale of international games and demonstrate the administrative and physical capability of an independent nation. Surakarta, chosen as the host city, transformed into the epicenter of national pride from September 9 to 12, 1948.

The first PON brought together athletes from various regions across the archipelago, despite ongoing military conflicts and infrastructural limitations. It was more than a sports competition; it was a physical manifestation of independence. The opening day of this historic event—September 9—permanently etched itself into the national consciousness as the spiritual birthdate of Indonesian sportsmanship.

Institutionalization and the Proclamation of Haornas in 1983

While the spirit of September 9, 1948, lived on in the hearts of athletes and sports enthusiasts for decades, it was not until 1983 that the date was formally institutionalized as a national day of observance.

On September 9, 1983, during a grand ceremony in Surakarta, President Soeharto officially proclaimed Hari Olahraga Nasional. The proclamation coincided with the inauguration of the newly restored and modernized Sriwedari Stadium, a historic sporting venue that had hosted events during the colonial era and served as a central hub for the 1948 PON.

The 1983 declaration aimed to rejuvenate the nation’s commitment to physical fitness and competitive excellence. Recognizing that a productive and resilient workforce requires a strong cultural foundation in physical education, the government sought to transition sports from an elite competitive pursuit into a widespread public habit.

To give the observance legal permanence, the administration formalized the status of the holiday through Presidential Decree (Keppres) Number 67 of 1985 concerning National Sports Day. This decree officially designated September 9 of each year as Haornas, mandating that government bodies, educational institutions, and civic organizations promote sports development, physical fitness, and athletic training on a continuous, nationwide basis.

Evolution of Haornas: Beyond Medals to Public Health and Economy

In contemporary discourse, the Ministry of Youth and Sports (Kemenpora) emphasizes that Haornas is no longer viewed solely through the narrow lens of elite athletic achievement and medal counts. While international podium finishes remain a source of immense national pride, modern sports policy in Indonesia increasingly focuses on "sports industry" and "sports science," aligning physical activity with broader national development goals.

Recent statements from the Ministry of Youth and Sports highlight that the systematic development of sports yields profound dual benefits: public health and economic stimulation. As lifestyle-related non-communicable diseases rise globally, promoting grassroots physical activity acts as a crucial preventive healthcare measure, reducing long-term public health expenditures.

Concurrently, the sports economy has emerged as a vibrant sector capable of generating significant revenue and employment. From athletic apparel manufacturing and fitness center franchising to large-scale event management and sport tourism, the economic footprint of sports in Indonesia is expanding rapidly. Initiatives such as hosting specialized competitions—including the upcoming PON Pantai (Coastal PON) in Ancol, Jakarta, and the strategic positioning of Sumba Timur as a sport tourism hub for the 2028 PON—demonstrate how athletic events can stimulate regional economies, boost hospitality sectors, and showcase regional cultural assets to domestic and international travelers.

Addressing Infrastructure and Training Deficits

Despite the optimistic outlook surrounding modern sports development, industry stakeholders and government officials acknowledge persistent structural challenges. High-performance sports require substantial capital investment in modern infrastructure, sports science laboratories, elite coaching staff, and systematic athlete development pipelines.

Reflecting these demands, recent proposals from Kemenpora have underscored the necessity for substantial budgetary allocations—such as the projected need for Rp1.5 trillion to construct comprehensive national training centers and specialized sports academies. Experts argue that if Indonesia aims to consistently perform at the highest tiers of Asian and global competitions, grassroots identification must be paired with world-class training facilities that integrate sports psychology, nutrition, and advanced biomechanics.

The broader implications of these investments extend beyond professional accolades. Well-funded sports academies create career pathways for talented youths from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, fostering social mobility and national integration. Furthermore, robust community sports facilities encourage grassroots participation, fulfilling the core objective of Haornas: building a healthy, disciplined, and united society.

The 43rd Observance of Haornas in 2026

As the nation observes the 43rd anniversary of Hari Olahraga Nasional on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, the focus shifts to actionable engagement. The anniversary serves as a reminder that the heritage of the 1948 Solo PON must be preserved through active participation rather than passive commemoration.

Across the archipelago, communities, schools, corporate entities, and government offices mark Haornas 2026 through varied initiatives. These include mass gymnastics, community running events, grassroots tournaments, and educational campaigns highlighting the importance of regular physical activity for families and workplaces. Public figures and national athletes frequently use the platform to mentor younger generations, imparting values of perseverance, fair play, and teamwork.

The longevity of Hari Olahraga Nasional underscores a fundamental truth about modern Indonesia: the nation was built on resilience, and its physical culture reflects that same indomitable spirit. From the makeshift tracks and fields of post-independence Surakarta in 1948 to state-of-the-art training complexes and sprawling sport tourism destinations envisioned for the future, September 9 remains a powerful annual touchstone. It calls upon every citizen to honor the sacrifices of past generations by embracing physical vitality, supporting national athletes, and ensuring that sports remain an integral, unifying thread in the fabric of Indonesian society.

Earl Charles Spencer and the Fractured Legacy of the British Monarchy: Unveiling Tensions Within the House of Windsor

by Nana Muazin
written by Nana Muazin

The recent disclosures by Charles Spencer, the 9th Earl Spencer and younger brother of the late Diana, Princess of Wales, have reignited long-standing debates regarding the internal dynamics of the British Royal Family during one of its most turbulent eras. Nearly three decades after the death of the Princess in 1997, Earl Spencer has provided fresh, controversial insights into the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, particularly focusing on his interactions with the man who is now King Charles III. These revelations, contained within his latest literary work, have sparked a significant media firestorm, pitting the personal recollections of a grieving brother against the guarded, institutional narrative of Buckingham Palace.

The core of the current controversy centers on the period surrounding the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales. Earl Spencer alleges that, in the frantic days following the fatal car crash in Paris, he engaged in a heated telephone exchange with the then-Prince of Wales. According to Spencer, the conversation escalated into what he described as "overflowing anger" from the Prince, specifically regarding the involvement of young Princes William and Harry in the funeral procession. Spencer, who had famously promised in his eulogy to safeguard the two princes from the same pressures that plagued their mother, claims he advocated for their exclusion from the public glare of the walk to Westminster Abbey. He alleges that the response from the future monarch included a callous dismissal of Diana’s legacy, a charge that has been categorically denied by royal representatives.

The Chronology of Conflict: From Althorp to Westminster

To understand the weight of these claims, one must look at the historical timeline of the Spencer-Windsor relationship. The Spencer family, possessing a pedigree that rivals the House of Windsor, has historically maintained a complex proximity to the throne. Charles Spencer, born on May 20, 1964, grew up alongside his sister Diana at the Althorp Estate in West Northamptonshire. Their childhood was marked by the distinct privilege of the British aristocracy; their mother, Frances Shand Kydd, and father, John Spencer, provided an environment that was deeply rooted in the traditions of the British landed gentry.

The connection between the Spencers and the royals was solidified early on, with the late Queen Elizabeth II serving as Charles Spencer’s godmother. However, as Diana entered the royal fold in 1981, the tension between the public image of a fairytale marriage and the private reality of a crumbling union began to influence the Spencer family’s perception of the monarchy. The timeline of their disillusionment is punctuated by Diana’s explosive interviews in the 1990s, the eventual divorce in 1996, and the tragic conclusion in August 1997. It is within this final, traumatic chapter that Earl Spencer’s new claims reside, suggesting that the friction between his family and the Palace did not dissipate with the Princess’s death, but rather intensified in the immediate hours following the news.

The Anatomy of the Allegations and the Palace Response

The specific allegation that the then-Prince of Wales remarked, "we will soon forget her," serves as the primary catalyst for the current public discourse. Such a claim, if accepted as fact, would represent a profound breach of the expected decorum between a grieving sibling and the bereaved husband. In response, Buckingham Palace has adopted a strategy of firm refutation, albeit without engaging in a protracted public debate.

In a rare and pointed statement, representatives of the Royal Household hinted that the Earl’s account is colored by the "pain of fraternal grief," suggesting that the passage of time and the intensity of the trauma may have clouded his memory. This response, which Spencer has characterized as a form of "gaslighting," marks a departure from the traditional "never complain, never explain" mantra often attributed to the late Queen Elizabeth II. By accusing the King of manipulative rhetoric, the Earl has moved the conflict from the private sphere of family grievance to the public arena of psychological and political critique.

Fact-Based Analysis: The Sociopolitical Context

The implications of these revelations extend beyond a mere family dispute; they touch upon the evolving transparency of the modern monarchy. Historically, the British Royal Family has been insulated from the type of granular criticism that the Earl is now providing. However, the rise of "tell-all" memoirs and the shifting expectations of public figures have fundamentally altered the landscape.

From a sociological perspective, the tension between the Earl and the King represents a conflict between two modes of duty: the institutional duty of the Crown and the familial duty of the Spencers. The Earl’s background as a journalist—having served as a correspondent for NBC News—provides him with a unique set of skills to navigate the media landscape. His education at Eton College and Magdalen College, Oxford, instilled in him an analytical rigor that he has applied to his family history. When he writes about the royals, he does so not merely as an aggrieved brother, but as a chronicler of history who views his own family’s narrative as essential to the broader story of the United Kingdom.

The Role of Althorp and the Spencer Legacy

Althorp House, acquired by the Spencer family in 1508, remains a silent witness to these historical developments. As the ancestral seat, it serves as the physical manifestation of the Spencer family’s status. The estate, situated approximately 75 miles north of London, is where the late Princess was laid to rest, making it a site of pilgrimage for those who remain loyal to her memory. The fact that the Earl has chosen to speak out while maintaining his role as the custodian of this estate is significant. It underscores his perceived responsibility to preserve the "real" history of his sister, in opposition to what he perceives as the sanitized or distorted version offered by the royal institution.

The Broader Impact: Public Perception and the Monarchy

The public response to these claims has been deeply divided. Proponents of the Earl argue that his transparency is a necessary corrective to decades of carefully curated royal imagery. They contend that by highlighting the coldness he experienced from the royal center, he is humanizing the experience of those who have been marginalized by the monarchy’s rigid structures.

Conversely, critics and some royal commentators have questioned the timing and the motivation behind these disclosures. They argue that revisiting events from 1997, particularly through the lens of a new book, risks damaging the monarchy during a period of transition under King Charles III. There is also a concern regarding the impact of these claims on Princes William and Harry. The media, in its assessment, has noted that these revelations may be seen as a "dagger to the heart" of the two princes, who have spent their lives attempting to navigate the complexities of their mother’s legacy while maintaining their own roles within or outside of the royal family.

Evaluating the Institutional Tension

The tension between the Earl and the King is emblematic of a broader struggle within the British establishment. The monarchy, while theoretically a symbolic institution, is inherently political, and the influence of family figures such as the Spencers creates a competing narrative that the Palace must manage. The "gaslighting" claim, in particular, has resonated with modern audiences familiar with psychological terminology, turning a historical dispute into a contemporary social issue.

Statistically, while the monarchy continues to enjoy a majority of support within the United Kingdom, the demographic shifts among younger generations suggest that the institution is increasingly scrutinized for its transparency and internal conduct. The Earl’s willingness to challenge the monarch directly—a man who is both the head of state and the father of his nephews—reflects a decline in the deference once afforded to the Sovereign.

Conclusion: A Legacy Defined by Conflict

As the discourse continues, the narrative of the House of Windsor remains inextricably linked to the tragic events of 1997. Whether the Earl’s claims are viewed as a necessary truth-telling mission or as a persistent grievance, they serve as a reminder that the personal lives of royalty are rarely separated from their public functions. The rift between the Spencer family and the British monarchy is not merely a footnote in history; it is an ongoing narrative that continues to shape the public’s understanding of the King and the enduring shadow cast by the late Princess of Wales.

For the historian, the current situation offers a case study in the malleability of memory and the power of narrative. For the public, it remains a compelling, if uncomfortable, look behind the gilded curtains of an institution that is struggling to balance its ancient traditions with the modern, unrelenting demand for total transparency. As both parties continue to hold their positions, the legacy of the late Princess remains the contested ground upon which this modern drama is played out, ensuring that the questions raised by Earl Spencer will persist in the national consciousness for years to come.

John Herdman Gives Strong Signal: Luke Vickery Set for Potential Debut Against Singapore in FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 Opener

by Layla Zulfa
written by Layla Zulfa

The Indonesian national football team is gearing up for a high-stakes campaign as they prepare to host the prestigious FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026. Among the storylines capturing the attention of analysts and supporters alike is the emergence of 22-year-old forward Luke Vickery. Following the official completion of his naturalization process, the American-born attacker has been officially included in head coach John Herdman’s 23-man squad. Anticipation reached a fever pitch after the tactical mastermind dropped a strong hint regarding Vickery’s potential inclusion in the starting lineup for Indonesia’s opening fixture against arch-rivals Singapore.

The much-anticipated encounter is scheduled to take place at the iconic Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium (SUGBK) in Jakarta on Friday, September 25, 2026. As the Garuda squad undergoes intensive preparations, the integration of foreign-born talent continues to be a cornerstone of the Indonesian Football Association’s (PSSI) strategy to elevate the national team’s competitiveness on both regional and international stages. For Vickery, who currently plies his trade with Australian A-League side Macarthur FC, this tournament represents a career-defining moment to validate his newly minted citizenship on the pitch.

Building Familiarity and Tactical Alignment

Luke Vickery is far from an unknown quantity within the national team setup. Although this tournament marks his prospective official debut, the young forward has spent significant time absorbing John Herdman’s tactical philosophy. Vickery was previously integrated into the Garuda training camps back in May and maintained his presence throughout the rigorous June agenda. This extended period of adaptation has allowed the coaching staff to closely evaluate his technical capabilities, physical conditioning, and psychological readiness for international football.

During a press briefing following the squad’s training session at the Madya Stadium in Jakarta on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, Herdman elaborated on his history with the player. The former Canada national team manager noted that the prior camps provided invaluable insight into Vickery’s potential fit within the squad. This familiarity significantly reduces the transitional risks typically associated with introducing newly naturalized players to a pre-established tactical framework.

Profiling Luke Vickery: A Direct and Lethal Weapon

When assessing Vickery’s stylistic attributes, John Herdman offered a concise yet glowing evaluation of the young striker. The English tactician highlighted two primary traits that make Vickery a valuable asset for the Indonesian frontline: his directness in possession and his instinctive goal-scoring abilities. In modern football, particularly in high-intensity regional tournaments where defensive low blocks are common, a forward who plays with verticality and direct intent can dismantle opposing defensive structures effectively.

Vickery’s development at Macarthur FC has heavily emphasized physical robustness, quick decision-making in the final third, and intelligent movement off the ball. These qualities align seamlessly with Herdman’s high-pressing, dynamic tactical approach. As the Garuda squad seeks to improve its offensive output, Vickery’s natural knack for finding the back of the net could provide the clinical edge that Indonesia has occasionally lacked in crucial matches.

Internal Competition and the Road to the Starting XI

Despite the positive signals emanating from the coaching staff, John Herdman emphasized that no player is guaranteed a spot in the starting eleven without enduring intense internal competition. The two-day window between the initial training sessions at Madya Stadium and the tournament opener on Friday serves as a rigorous testing ground for the entire 23-man roster.

Herdman made it clear that while Vickery possesses a strong opportunity to break into the starting lineup, every member of the squad must earn their right to play through dedication, performance, and tactical discipline in training. This competitive environment is designed to foster accountability and ensure that only the most prepared and in-form players take the pitch against Singapore. The final selection will depend heavily on tactical matchups, physical fitness assessments, and the specific strategic objectives Herdman outlines for the opening fixture.

Overcoming Procedural Hurdles

The journey to this prospective debut has been a protracted one for Vickery. While he previously participated in national team training sessions earlier in the year, administrative delays regarding his paperwork and the formalization of his status prevented him from representing the country in official competitive fixtures. With those bureaucratic hurdles now firmly in the past, Vickery is fully cleared to pull on the red-and-white jersey and compete in an official FIFA-sanctioned regional tournament.

His inclusion reflects a broader trend within Indonesian football administration, which has aggressively sought to scout, recruit, and integrate players of Indonesian descent from professional leagues around the globe. This strategy aims to bridge the competitive gap between Southeast Asian nations and the elite tiers of Asian football by infusing the national team pool with players seasoned in higher-tempo foreign leagues.

Context and Significance of the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026

The FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 holds immense prestige and strategic importance for the participating nations. As the premier football championship in Southeast Asia, the tournament serves as a barometer of regional dominance and a crucial platform for developmental growth. For Indonesia, playing on home soil at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium adds an extra layer of expectation. Tens of thousands of passionate supporters are expected to pack the stands, creating an electrifying atmosphere that can either galvanize the home side or impose immense pressure.

Entering the tournament under the guidance of John Herdman, the Indonesian Football Association has placed lofty expectations on the national team. Herdman, renowned for his tactical acumen and his success in turning around national programs, has sought to instill a culture of professionalism, resilience, and tactical flexibility. A strong start against Singapore is paramount, not only for securing three crucial points in the group standings but also for establishing psychological momentum for the remainder of the tournament.

Analysing the Opponent: Singapore

Singapore enters this tournament aiming to reassert its historical competitiveness within the region. Historically one of the powerhouse nations of Southeast Asian football, Singapore has undergone its own generational transition, blending experienced veterans with hungry young prospects. Matches between Indonesia and Singapore are historically fierce, characterized by high physical intensity, tactical chess matches, and intense emotional investment from supporters on both sides.

For Herdman’s tactical setup, neutralizing Singapore’s defensive organization while exploiting transitional spaces will be the primary objective. If Vickery is deployed in the starting lineup, his direct running and penalty-box instincts could prove vital in breaking down a resolute Singaporean backline. The battle in the final third is anticipated to be the defining tactical duel of the match.

Implications for the Indonesian National Team’s Future

The potential debut of Luke Vickery carries long-term implications for the depth and versatility of the Indonesian national team. As the Garuda squad looks beyond the regional championship toward broader Asian and global qualification milestones, building a deep talent pool with diverse tactical profiles is essential. Younger players like Vickery represent the future spine of the national program.

Furthermore, successful integration of foreign-born talent reinforces the viability of PSSI’s dual-pathway development strategy—combining domestic academy development with the recruitment of diaspora talent. If Vickery performs up to expectations in his debut campaign, it will validate the exhaustive scouting and naturalization efforts undertaken over the past year.

Conclusion and Final Preparations

As the clock ticks down to the opening whistle at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium on Friday, September 25, 2026, all eyes will be on John Herdman’s final team sheet. The strong signals dropped by the head coach suggest that Luke Vickery is primed to make his long-awaited bow on the international stage, stepping out of the training grounds and into the searing spotlight of a major regional tournament.

With the final two days of training dedicated to sharpening tactical combinations and settling internal selection battles, the Indonesian squad remains completely focused on the task at hand. For Luke Vickery, the opportunity to wear the Garuda crest in an official match is the culmination of months of patient waiting, hard work, and administrative perseverance. Whether he starts or impacts the game from the bench, his prospective debut marks an exciting new chapter in the ongoing evolution of Indonesian football.

Dewa United Banten FC Claims Top Spot in Super League 2026-2027 Standings Under Osmar Loss

by Reynand Wu
written by Reynand Wu

Dewa United Banten FC has officially ascended to the pinnacle of the Super League 2026-2027 standings, marking a significant milestone in the club’s trajectory as they navigate the opening stages of the current campaign. With a commendable tally of 10 points secured from their first four outings, the Tangerang-based outfit has captured the attention of both pundits and fans alike. However, despite the celebratory atmosphere surrounding their current standing, head coach Osmar Loss has maintained a characteristically pragmatic approach, cautioning his squad against the dangers of complacency as the grueling marathon of the season continues.

The current Super League landscape is characterized by its competitive volatility. While Dewa United currently occupies the summit, the table remains fluid, largely due to the uneven distribution of matches played across the various clubs. This statistical nuance is precisely why Loss has urged his players to maintain their focus, emphasizing that the current table is not yet a definitive reflection of the season’s final hierarchy.

A Calculated Start to the Campaign

The performance of Dewa United throughout the first month of the 2026-2027 season has been defined by tactical discipline and an effective transition game. Under the stewardship of Osmar Loss, the team has managed to blend defensive resilience with high-pressing offensive tactics, a hallmark of the Brazilian manager’s philosophy.

In their first four matches, the squad demonstrated a remarkable ability to close out games, even when facing significant pressure from opponents. The acquisition of 10 points from a possible 12 represents one of the strongest starts in the club’s history. Yet, as Loss pointed out in a recent interview, the numerical advantage in the standings is partially due to the scheduling peculiarities of the league’s early phase.

"I agree that we have had a very promising start," said Loss. "Being at the top of the table is a testament to the hard work the players have put in during pre-season. However, we must remain grounded. We have played one more match than some of our closest rivals, and in a league as competitive as this, the margin for error is razor-thin. We cannot afford to look at the standings as a comfort zone; instead, we must look at them as a challenge to maintain our momentum."

Analyzing the Competitive Landscape

The Super League 2026-2027 is proving to be a highly tactical affair. Data from the opening weeks suggests that ball possession metrics are no longer the sole indicator of success. Teams like Dewa United are succeeding through efficient vertical play and clinical finishing.

The league table, as it stands, presents a complex picture. While Dewa United leads, other heavyweights are waiting in the wings, adjusting their tactical setups and integrating new signings. The intense nature of the schedule—which includes mid-week fixtures alongside the typical weekend rotation—has placed a heavy burden on player fitness and recovery protocols.

Loss noted that the physical demands of the league require constant rotation. "We have a deep squad, and every player knows their role. The goal is to reach the mid-season point in a position that allows us to challenge for the title. To do that, we need to treat every single training session and every single match with the same level of intensity," he added.

The Looming Challenge: The Persib Bandung Encounter

As the league enters the scheduled FIFA Matchday period, teams are taking a well-deserved breather to regroup. For Dewa United, this break is a strategic opportunity to refine their tactical nuances before facing what is arguably their most difficult test of the season so far. On October 11, 2026, the team will travel to face Persib Bandung, a match that promises to be a barometer for their title credentials.

Persib Bandung, currently balancing domestic commitments with international participation in the ACL Two, represents a significant hurdle. Reports indicate that the Bandung club has recently bolstered its financial standing, with significant revenue streams coming from their continental participation, potentially allowing for increased investment in the squad’s depth and conditioning.

The clash against Persib is not merely a contest for three points; it is a battle for psychological dominance. A win against a traditional powerhouse on their home turf would send a resounding message to the rest of the league. Conversely, any slip-up would allow chasing teams to close the gap, potentially shifting the momentum of the league standings before the season reaches its first quarter.

Dewa United di Puncak Klasemen Super League, Osmar Loss Tak Mau Jemawa jelang Lawan Persib Bandung

Tactical Implications and Strategic Depth

The technical staff at Dewa United is utilizing the current FIFA Matchday to analyze the tactical trends that have emerged over the last few weeks. The focus has been on tightening the defensive transition, as the team has occasionally shown vulnerability to counter-attacks when committing too many bodies forward.

Furthermore, the coaching staff is monitoring the fitness levels of key players who have been called up for national duty. The risk of fatigue and injury during international breaks is a perennial concern for managers, and Loss is no exception. Ensuring that the team returns to club duties in peak physical condition is essential for maintaining the high-intensity press that has served them so well.

Beyond the physical, there is the psychological aspect of leading the pack. "The pressure of being at the top is different from being the hunter," noted a sports analyst familiar with the Super League. "When you are the leader, every other team views you as the primary target. Every opponent will raise their game to prove they can topple the table-toppers. How Osmar Loss manages this transition from underdog to favorite will be the defining narrative of the next few weeks."

The Broader Impact on the Super League

The success of Dewa United in the early stages of the 2026-2027 season has added a layer of excitement to the Super League. In previous years, the title race was often dominated by a small circle of clubs. The emergence of a consistent challenger from Tangerang suggests a shift toward a more competitive and unpredictable environment, which is ultimately beneficial for the growth and commercial viability of the sport.

Financial parity, though still an ideal, is slowly being bridged through better management and strategic partnerships among emerging clubs. The success of teams like Dewa United—and the recent financial report from Persib Bandung regarding their ACL Two participation—illustrates that clubs are becoming increasingly adept at navigating the financial complexities of modern football.

Looking Ahead: A Marathon, Not a Sprint

As the league prepares to resume after the international break, the atmosphere within the Dewa United camp remains one of focused determination. The players are aware that while the first 10 points have laid a solid foundation, the path to the championship is long and fraught with potential pitfalls.

Dewa United di Puncak Klasemen Super League, Osmar Loss Tak Mau Jemawa jelang Lawan Persib Bandung

The upcoming fixture list is daunting. Following the match against Persib, the team will have to navigate a series of high-stakes encounters against top-half rivals. These games will likely determine whether Dewa United is a genuine title contender or merely a team that enjoyed a strong start.

"We aren’t looking past the next match," Loss concluded. "That is the trap. We respect every opponent, we prepare for every tactical scenario, and we trust in the collective strength of this group. The goal is simple: to improve every single day. If we do that, the results will take care of themselves."

As the Super League 2026-2027 season progresses, all eyes will be on the Tangerang side. Whether they can sustain their current form under the pressure of expectation remains the most compelling question of the current campaign. For now, they stand tall at the top, a symbol of early-season success and a testament to the rigorous standards set by their coaching staff. The coming months will reveal if this early brilliance can be sustained into a legitimate championship campaign, or if the league’s traditional giants will reassert their dominance in the months to come.

The fans in Tangerang have every reason to be optimistic, but as the seasoned professionals in the club are well aware, the road to glory is paved with consistency, resilience, and the ability to adapt when the pressure is at its absolute highest. The next chapter of this story will be written on the pitch, starting with the high-profile showdown in Bandung, where the true mettle of this Dewa United squad will finally be put to the test.

Permata Bank Gaikindo Auto Week 2026 Set to Expand Nationwide with Simultaneous Exhibitions Across Ten Major Indonesian Cities

by Rifan Muazin
written by Rifan Muazin

The automotive landscape in Indonesia is poised for a significant transformation as the upcoming Permata Bank Gaikindo Auto Week (GAW) 2026 prepares to break conventional exhibition formats. Scheduled to run from November 20 through November 29, 2026, the prestigious automotive showcase is officially organized by the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo) in strategic collaboration with the Ministry of Industry of the Republic of Indonesia. In an unprecedented move designed to decentralize major automotive events and stimulate regional markets, the 2026 iteration of GAW will be executed simultaneously across ten major metropolitan centers spanning the archipelago.

This ambitious multi-city strategy marks a departure from traditional single-location auto shows, reflecting a broader effort by industry stakeholders to enhance accessibility, engage regional consumer bases more deeply, and sustain positive sales momentum as the calendar year draws to a close. By bringing high-profile automotive exhibitions directly to key economic hubs outside the capital, organizers aim to bridge the gap between global manufacturers and regional buyers.

Strategic Decentralization and Regional Market Growth

The decision to host GAW 2026 concurrently across ten distinct cities represents a calculated approach to market stimulation. The designated locations—Jakarta, Bali, Balikpapan, Bandung, Makassar, Medan, Palembang, Semarang, Solo, and Surabaya—were strategically selected based on their robust economic activity, rising vehicle adoption rates, and status as vital regional distribution and lifestyle centers.

Gaikindo General Chairperson Putu Juli Ardika emphasized that the concurrent scheduling is a deliberate initiative aimed at accelerating motor vehicle transactions while maintaining a strong retail momentum toward the end of the year. According to Ardika, the multi-city platform functions as a direct conduit connecting prospective consumers with major players in the automotive manufacturing sector, facilitating exclusive promotional offers, special financial packages, and streamlined purchasing processes during the event window.

"The Permata Bank Gaikindo Auto Week 2026, executed simultaneously across ten cities, serves as a comprehensive platform designed to directly bridge consumers and the automotive industry through tailored offerings and unique conveniences available exclusively during the exhibition period," Ardika stated.

The inclusion of multiple urban centers across different islands—spanning Java, Sumatra, Bali, Sulawesi, and Kalimantan—underscores Gaikindo’s commitment to fostering equitable market development across Indonesia’s diverse economic landscape. This decentralized framework not only provides regional dealerships and authorized distributors with a high-visibility platform to showcase their latest lineups, but it also spares consumers from traveling long distances to major metropolitan hubs like Jakarta to experience premier automotive showcases firsthand.

Comprehensive Event Timeline and Venue Breakdown

To accommodate the vast geographical spread, GAW 2026 will implement a structured timeline and venue deployment strategy tailored to each region. The main flagship exhibition will take place at the Indonesia Convention Exhibition (ICE) BSD City in Greater Jakarta, running for the full duration from November 20 to November 29, 2026. This extensive timeframe allows Jakarta-based enthusiasts and industry analysts ample opportunity to examine vehicle premieres, advanced technological displays, and comprehensive brand portfolios.

Visitors in Jakarta, Surabaya, Medan, Makassar, and every other participating city will have the opportunity to get behind the wheel of the latest models presented by various automotive brands.

These dedicated test drive zones are engineered to allow potential buyers to assess critical vehicle attributes firsthand, including powertrain performance, cabin ergonomics, active and passive safety features, infotainment usability, and overall ride comfort. Industry experts note that physical test-driving opportunities significantly reduce consumer hesitation, serving as a vital conversion tool during large-scale automotive exhibitions.

In addition to passenger cars—which are expected to comprise the majority of the displays—the exhibition will feature a diverse lineup of vehicle categories tailored to evolving consumer demands. This includes internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), and battery electric vehicles (BEVs), aligning with the Indonesian government’s ongoing push toward vehicle electrification and sustainable transportation infrastructure.

Financial Partnerships and Strategic Sponsorship

The realization of an event of this magnitude requires robust financial backing and strategic partnerships. For GAW 2026, Gaikindo has renewed its collaboration with Permata Bank, which serves as the official title sponsor and exclusive banking partner for the nationwide exhibition.

The involvement of Permata Bank extends beyond branding rights, playing a critical functional role in driving transaction volumes during the event. Through its specialized automotive financing division, Permata Kredit Kendaraan Bermotor (KKB), the financial institution will deploy customized financing schemes, competitive interest rates, quick loan approval processes, and specialized down-payment structures designed exclusively for attendees of GAW 2026.

Pameran GAW Akan Digelar Serentak di 10 Kota

Financial analysts point out that end-of-year automotive exhibitions heavily rely on attractive financing incentives to close high-value transactions. With interest rate fluctuations and macroeconomic considerations influencing consumer purchasing power, the presence of a dedicated financial partner offering preferential credit terms is viewed as a vital catalyst for converting foot traffic into concrete sales contracts. The integration of seamless banking services directly on the exhibition floor—spanning both the ICE BSD venue and the nine regional shopping centers—ensures that buyers can complete the entire acquisition journey, from vehicle selection to financing approval, under one roof.

Broader Economic Implications and Industry Outlook

The launch of GAW 2026 arrives at a crucial juncture for the Indonesian automotive sector. As the domestic market navigates shifting consumer preferences, economic adjustments, and the transition toward green mobility, industry stakeholders are continually seeking innovative ways to stimulate demand.

Historically, single-city automotive exhibitions held in the capital have dominated the sector’s promotional calendar. However, the post-pandemic retail landscape has accelerated the need for localized engagement. By taking the auto show format directly to ten key regional centers, Gaikindo and the Ministry of Industry are decentralizing economic benefits, empowering regional dealer networks, and providing localized markets with direct access to national-level vehicle launches and promotional campaigns.

Furthermore, the timing of the exhibition—late November—is strategically optimal. It positions automotive brands to clear inventory, achieve annual sales targets, and capitalize on the traditional year-end surge in consumer spending, which is frequently bolstered by holiday bonuses and financial restructuring.

The Evolution of Automotive Safety: Why Advanced Driver Assistance Systems Are Reshaping the Modern Vehicle Landscape

by Asro
written by Asro

The modern automotive landscape has undergone a profound transformation, shifting its primary value proposition from raw mechanical performance, fuel efficiency, and interior luxury to active safety and intelligent integration. Today, consumers stepping onto a dealership floor are no longer merely greeted by plush leather upholstery, spacious cabins, or sprawling infotainment touchscreens. Instead, they are introduced to a sophisticated suite of electronic guardians known as Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Once reserved exclusively for high-end luxury flagships, ADAS technologies—ranging from automatic emergency braking and lane-keeping assist to blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control—have rapidly democratized, becoming standard or widely available features in mainstream vehicles globally.

This sweeping integration of driver-assistance technology is not happening in a vacuum. It is deeply synchronized with evolving global vehicle safety standards, shifting regulatory benchmarks, and an intensifying technological arms race among international automakers. As regulatory bodies and safety rating organizations continuously raise the bar for crash prevention, the automotive industry finds itself at a crucial intersection where software is just as vital as steel.

The Regulatory Shift: Euro NCAP and the 2026 Protocol Redefinition

A primary catalyst for the widespread adoption and continuous refinement of ADAS features is the rigorous evolution of safety testing protocols worldwide. A landmark development in this trajectory is the implementation of updated testing frameworks by the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP). Entering fully into effect for the 2026 testing cycles, Euro NCAP has significantly recalibrated its methodology to place unprecedented emphasis on active safety systems and a vehicle’s proactive ability to mitigate or entirely prevent accidents before they occur.

Historically, crash-test organizations focused heavily on passive safety measures—evaluating how effectively a vehicle’s crumple zones, chassis rigidity, and airbag deployment networks could protect occupants after an impact had already been initiated. While structural integrity remains a fundamental pillar of automotive design, the 2026 protocols expand the evaluative scope drastically. Modern testing scenarios now rigorously assess how seamlessly a vehicle’s sensors, cameras, and radars interact with autonomous emergency braking and lane-support systems in complex, real-world environments. These tests simulate intricate urban dynamics, including high-risk interactions with vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists.

By tying high safety ratings directly to the performance of active collision avoidance technologies, organizations like Euro NCAP have effectively compelled automotive manufacturers to accelerate their research, development, and deployment of sophisticated ADAS architectures. Consequently, achieving a coveted five-star safety rating is no longer attainable through passive protection alone; it requires state-of-the-art predictive intelligence.

Demystifying ADAS: How Intelligent Co-Pilots Operate

To understand the rapid proliferation of these technologies, one must examine the foundational mechanics of ADAS. At its core, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems encompass a collection of electronic technologies engineered to assist the human driver throughout the driving lifecycle. Utilizing a sophisticated network of environmental sensors—including high-resolution optical cameras, millimeter-wave radars, and increasingly, LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) systems—the vehicle continuously scans and interprets its immediate surroundings.

This hardware is paired with advanced computing units that process real-time environmental data to identify potential hazards, roadway markings, traffic signs, and nearby obstacles. When the system detects an anomaly or an escalating risk—such as a sudden deceleration of traffic ahead or an unintentional drift out of a designated lane—it responds in one of two ways: by issuing immediate audio-visual warnings to alert the driver, or by executing active physical interventions, such as applying brake pressure or making minor steering adjustments.

Among the most prevalent ADAS features integrated into contemporary passenger vehicles are:

  • Forward Collision Warning (FCW): Monitors the distance and closing speed relative to the vehicle or object ahead, alerting the driver when a potential front-end collision is imminent.
  • Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB): Engages the braking system independently if the driver fails to react adequately to an imminent collision warning.
  • Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) and Lane Centering: Utilizes cameras to track lane markings and applies corrective steering torque to prevent unintended lane departures.
  • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC): Automatically adjusts the vehicle’s cruising speed to maintain a safe, pre-set following distance from the vehicle directly ahead.
  • Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) and Blind Spot Intervention: Detects vehicles occupying adjacent lanes in hard-to-see areas and issues warnings or counter-steers to prevent unsafe lane changes.

Despite these advanced capabilities, regulatory bodies such as the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) consistently issue strong reminders that ADAS does not equate to autonomous driving. According to standard definitions established by automotive engineers and safety regulators, current consumer-grade systems fall under Level 1 or Level 2 automation. At Level 1, the vehicle may independently control either steering or acceleration/braking under specific conditions, while the human driver oversees the rest. At Level 2, the vehicle can simultaneously handle both steering and acceleration/braking, but the human driver remains legally and practically responsible for continuous supervision of the driving environment, keeping hands on the wheel, and maintaining readiness to take over manual control at a moment’s notice.

The Five Core Drivers Behind the ADAS Surge

The massive integration of driver-assistance technology across global automotive markets is propelled by several distinct operational, safety, and commercial factors.

First, the primary objective remains the dramatic mitigation of traffic accidents and human error. Human distraction, fatigue, and delayed reaction times account for the vast majority of vehicular collisions worldwide. Features like Automatic Emergency Braking serve as an unflagging electronic safety net, reacting within milliseconds to sudden traffic stops or unexpected pedestrian crossings. While these systems do not eradicate human error, they provide a vital secondary layer of protection designed to absorb the catastrophic consequences of delayed human reactions.

Second, modern lifestyle and commuting demands have heightened the need for ergonomic driving aids, particularly during long-distance travel. Extended hours behind the wheel inevitably lead to cognitive fatigue and diminished alertness. Technologies such as Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Centering significantly reduce the physical and mental workload placed on drivers during monotonous highway commutes. By managing speed fluctuations and maintaining lane discipline, these systems help preserve driver stamina, though vigilant supervision remains mandatory.

Third, ADAS directly addresses inherent physical design limitations, most notably the perennial problem of vehicular blind spots. Modern vehicle architectures often feature thick structural pillars (A, B, and C pillars) and high beltlines to improve crash structural integrity, which inadvertently compromise outward visibility. Blind Spot Warning and Intervention technologies act as electronic extensions of the driver’s peripheral vision, tracking adjacent traffic and providing crucial alerts during high-density highway maneuvers where lane changes carry heightened risks.

Fourth, the democratization of sensor technology has transformed the supply chain economics of automotive manufacturing. High-definition cameras, compact radar modules, and sophisticated electronic control units have become significantly more cost-effective to produce and integrate. This technological maturation allows manufacturers to scale advanced safety features down from luxury vehicles to entry-level compact cars without pricing them out of the consumer market.

Finally, the competitive pressures of the global automotive marketplace have elevated safety features into a primary battleground for consumer preference and brand prestige. Modern car buyers weigh active safety ratings just as heavily as fuel economy, powertrain performance, and aesthetic design.

A Global Market in Motion: The Competitive Landscape and Recent Milestones

The competitive implications of this technological shift are vividly demonstrated by global market trends and recent safety evaluations. The race to dominate active safety innovation is no longer localized to traditional automotive powerhouses in Europe, Japan, and North America; emerging global players, particularly from China, have made staggering strides in deploying sophisticated ADAS architectures into mass-market vehicles.

Illustrating this rapid global evolution, Euro NCAP released a landmark series of crash and safety test results under its stringent 2026 protocols. Among the vehicles evaluated were several new models from Chinese manufacturers, notably the AION UT, the Geely E2, and the Leapmotor B05. Defying outdated industry skepticism, all three models secured the maximum five-star safety rating. This milestone underscores a broader industry reality: advanced active safety features and robust ADAS integration are rapidly becoming ubiquitous baseline expectations across global manufacturing lines, transcending traditional brand tiers and geographic origins.

Furthermore, major multinational automakers are continuously publishing empirical data and safety claims regarding their proprietary safety suites. For instance, global electric vehicle and tech giant BYD recently reported that the widespread integration of its proprietary driving assistance and active safety systems has measurably suppressed the incidence rates of severe highway accidents among its expanding global user base. Similar findings from independent research institutions and governmental transport ministries—including recent statements from transportation authorities emphasizing that integrated technology directly correlates with enhanced road safety—reinforce the industry-wide consensus that proactive safety systems save lives.

Industry Implications and the Future of Mobility

As the automotive industry looks toward the horizon, the proliferation of ADAS serves as a critical stepping stone toward future mobility paradigms, including fully autonomous transport. However, the immediate implications of this technological wave center on education, infrastructure, and human-machine interaction.

One of the most pressing challenges facing regulators, dealerships, and manufacturers is managing consumer expectations. Misleading marketing terminology—such as loosely throwing around terms like "autopilot" or "self-driving"—has historically contributed to driver overreliance, complacency, and catastrophic misuse of Level 2 systems. Bridging the gap between technological capability and consumer comprehension requires rigorous public education campaigns. Drivers must thoroughly understand the operational boundaries of their vehicles, recognizing that sensors can be obstructed by severe weather, degraded road markings, heavy rain, snow, or blinding direct sunlight.

Moreover, government bodies and transportation ministries worldwide are increasingly focusing on the synergy between vehicular technology and roadway infrastructure. For ADAS sensors to operate at peak efficiency, road markings must be clearly painted, signage standardized, and digital mapping updated. Public sector investments in smart infrastructure will dictate how effectively semi-autonomous vehicle technologies can perform in diverse geographical environments.

In conclusion, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems represent a profound evolution in how society approaches vehicular transportation. By blending high-resolution sensor arrays, sophisticated artificial intelligence algorithms, and rigorous global safety standards, the automotive sector is systematically redefining the baseline of vehicle safety. Yet, despite the remarkable computational power housed within modern dashboards, the ultimate responsibility for safe navigation remains firmly with the human operator. As the industry advances through 2026 and beyond, ADAS must be viewed not as a mechanical replacement for human awareness, but as an indispensable co-pilot designed to guard against the unpredictable variables of the open road.

Long queues for subsidized diesel fuel in Sumatra and Kalimantan do not necessarily indicate a national shortage of fuel stocks.

by Azzam Bilal Chamdy
written by Azzam Bilal Chamdy

The recurring phenomenon of long queues at fuel stations in Sumatra and Kalimantan has sparked public concern regarding the stability of Indonesia’s national energy security. While images of heavy-duty logistics vehicles waiting in line for hours to access subsidized diesel (Solar) have become a common sight in these regions, energy experts suggest that these localized disruptions should not be reflexively interpreted as a symptom of a national supply crisis. Instead, analysts argue that the issue is multifaceted, involving complex logistical chains, regional distribution dynamics, and the critical need for stricter enforcement against illicit fuel diversion.

Deconstructing the Supply Chain Complexity

Ali Ahmudi Achyak, Executive Director of the Center for Energy Security Studies (CESS), emphasizes that the Indonesian government maintains a sophisticated, tiered mechanism for managing subsidized fuel quotas. This system operates from the national level down to individual regional distributors and specific gas stations (SPBU).

"When long queues appear, it is premature to conclude that there is a national fuel deficit," Achyak stated during a briefing on Tuesday, September 22, 2026. "We must analyze the entire ecosystem, starting from national reserves and regional terminals down to the specific fuel inventory at the pump. If national and regional stocks are reported as secure, the investigation must shift to the ‘last mile’ of the supply chain. We need to determine if the bottleneck is caused by logistical failures, transportation delays, or, more concerningly, the misappropriation of subsidized fuel for industrial or non-entitled use."

The distinction between a "supply shortage" and a "distribution failure" is critical. A supply shortage implies that the national inventory held by state-owned energy giant Pertamina is insufficient to meet demand. Conversely, a distribution failure suggests that while the fuel exists within the country’s storage tanks, it is not reaching the intended consumers in a timely manner.

The Geography of Vulnerability: Sumatra and Kalimantan

The geographic landscape of Indonesia plays a significant role in fuel distribution stability. Unlike Java, which benefits from a dense, highly developed multi-modal transportation network—including toll roads, rail, and multiple ports—Sumatra and Kalimantan face significant infrastructure challenges.

In these regions, reliance on road transport for fuel delivery is absolute. Any disruption—whether due to extreme weather, road damage, or port congestion—has an immediate and disproportionate impact on fuel availability at the retail level. Furthermore, the high concentration of logistics and mining activity in these regions creates a baseline demand for subsidized diesel that is significantly higher than in other parts of the country.

"When queues begin to interfere with the safety and operational efficiency of logistics drivers, we have to look beyond the volume of the quota," Achyak noted. "In regions with fragile connectivity, the system is less forgiving of errors. If the delivery schedule is interrupted by even a few hours, the impact on a busy SPBU can manifest as a multi-day queue."

Chronology of Recent Supply Disruptions

Over the past several months, reports of fuel queues have surfaced periodically across several Indonesian provinces.

  • Early Q2 2026: Increased reports from South Sumatra highlighted challenges in keeping local SPBUs fully stocked during peak agricultural harvest seasons, which saw a surge in demand for diesel-powered machinery and transport.
  • Mid-2026: In East Kalimantan, the rapid growth of the logistics sector—partly driven by infrastructure projects—led to localized scarcity. Pertamina regional offices responded by increasing delivery frequency, though this required adjusting transport logistics under tight time constraints.
  • September 2026: A notable surge in public complaints in Makassar and parts of Kalimantan prompted official statements from Pertamina, acknowledging the pressure on regional services and pledging a "recovery" strategy to normalize fuel flow.

These incidents suggest a pattern where localized spikes in demand, combined with geographical limitations, create "hotspots" of scarcity that do not reflect the broader national energy picture.

Data-Driven Management and the Quota System

At the heart of the debate is the management of subsidized fuel quotas. Each SPBU is assigned a specific quota of subsidized fuel based on historical demand and regional projections. Managing these quotas requires a delicate balance. If a station sells its entire monthly quota in three weeks, it is forced to stop selling subsidized fuel, creating an artificial shortage until the next allocation period begins.

Experts argue that current quota management needs to be more dynamic. Rather than a static, monthly cap, regional distributors should utilize real-time data to shift supplies from areas with low demand to areas facing unexpected surges.

"Every SPBU has a responsibility to manage its quota so it lasts for the entire period," says Achyak. "However, the regulator must also ensure that this quota is not being diverted. There is strong evidence that some subsidized fuel is being illegally purchased by industrial entities that should be paying market rates. Every liter diverted to the black market is a liter taken away from the logistics drivers and small-scale fishermen who rely on these subsidies to survive."

The Shadow of Illicit Diversion

A major factor often overlooked in public discourse is the role of illicit diversion. Subsidized diesel is priced significantly lower than industrial-grade fuel. This price gap provides a massive incentive for organized criminal groups to "buy up" subsidized fuel from retail stations using modified vehicles with large hidden tanks.

This practice, known as penimbunan (hoarding), creates artificial scarcity at the pump. Even when a station is fully stocked according to its quota, it may appear empty because the fuel has been siphoned off by non-entitled users. Tackling this requires not just more fuel, but better surveillance at the point of sale.

Official Responses and Future Outlook

In response to the recent outcry, Pertamina has emphasized its commitment to strengthening the "recovery" of fuel services. This includes increasing the frequency of tank-truck dispatches to high-traffic areas and deploying monitoring teams to ensure that SPBU operators are not facilitating illegal sales.

However, industry observers maintain that short-term logistical fixes are only part of the solution. The long-term stability of fuel distribution in Sumatra and Kalimantan requires:

  1. Digitalization of Distribution: Expanding the use of digital tracking systems (such as the MyPertamina app) to ensure that only vehicles registered in the subsidy database can purchase fuel, thereby curbing the diversion of diesel to illicit industrial channels.
  2. Infrastructure Investment: Improving the capacity of regional fuel terminals to hold larger buffer stocks, allowing them to withstand temporary disruptions in the supply chain.
  3. Flexible Quota Allocation: Implementing a more responsive system that allows regional authorities to adjust quotas in real-time based on actual consumption patterns rather than historical averages.
  4. Strengthened Enforcement: Increasing penalties for SPBU owners found to be complicit in the sale of subsidized fuel to illegal intermediaries.

Broader Economic Implications

The implications of these fuel queues extend far beyond the inconvenience of the drivers. Because diesel is the lifeblood of the logistics industry, any delay in fuel access increases the cost of transporting goods. These costs are eventually passed on to consumers in the form of higher prices for essential commodities, including food and construction materials.

As Indonesia continues to pursue its ambitious national infrastructure and economic development goals, the stability of the energy supply chain remains a cornerstone of growth. The transition away from fossil fuel subsidies remains a long-term goal for the government, but until that transition is complete, the focus must remain on ensuring that the current system is transparent, equitable, and efficient.

In conclusion, while the sight of long queues remains a significant policy challenge, it serves as an indicator of a system under stress rather than a system in collapse. By addressing the regional distribution bottlenecks, tackling illicit diversion, and embracing more dynamic quota management, the government can stabilize supply and ensure that the vital logistics sector continues to move forward, regardless of the geographic challenges posed by the diverse Indonesian archipelago. The narrative of "scarcity" must be replaced by a narrative of "efficiency," ensuring that every drop of subsidized fuel reaches those who truly need it.

BNPP and Coordinating Ministry for People’s Empowerment Discuss Integrated Development of Entikong Border and Sekayam Transmigration Area

by Siti Muinah
written by Siti Muinah

The National Border Management Agency of the Republic of Indonesia, operating under the auspices of the Ministry of Home Affairs, has engaged in high-level strategic discussions with the Coordinating Ministry for People’s Empowerment to accelerate the holistic development of the Entikong border region and the Sekayam Transmigration Area, located in Sanggau Regency, West Kalimantan Province.

The high-level coordination meeting, held on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at the permanent secretariat office of the BNPP in Jakarta, represents a critical milestone in the central government’s ongoing efforts to transform peripheral regions into vibrant economic hubs. The discussions centered on forging a seamless synergy between infrastructure development, spatial planning, regional economic stimulation, and grassroots community empowerment. By aligning these strategic pillars, the Indonesian government aims to unlock the immense socioeconomic potential of the Entikong-Sekayam corridor, ensuring that border communities not only serve as a sovereign security buffer but also thrive as active participants in the national economy.

Strategic Context and Institutional Leadership

The strategic dialogue brought together key decision-makers from multiple governmental bodies to address the unique developmental challenges and opportunities inherent in Indonesia’s borderlands. The proceedings were co-chaired by senior officials from the BNPP, including Harris Fadhly, who serves as the Assistant Deputy for Economic Infrastructure and Community Welfare, and Ismawan Harijono, the Assistant Deputy for Border Area Spatial Planning. Representing the Coordinating Ministry for People’s Empowerment was Amin Mudzakir, the Assistant Deputy for the Empowerment of People in Specific Regions.

The involvement of the Coordinating Ministry for People’s Empowerment highlights the shift in national policy toward a human-centric approach in border management. While historical border policies heavily prioritized security and defense infrastructure—often leaving socio-economic development as a secondary concern—contemporary strategies integrate defense requirements with robust community welfare programs. This multidisciplinary approach ensures that infrastructure investments translate directly into tangible improvements in the daily lives of residents in remote and frontier regions.

Spatial Planning and Functional Integration

A cornerstone of the discussions in Jakarta was the operationalization of the Detailed Spatial Planning framework for the National Strategic Activity Center of Entikong. Harris Fadhly elaborated on the statutory guidelines governing the region, noting that the Entikong and Sekayam areas possess clearly defined functional allocations designed to guide sustainable development over the coming decades.

Under the current spatial design, Entikong is officially designated as the Main Service Center. Its strategic proximity to the international border with Malaysia positions it as a primary gateway for cross-border trade, customs clearance, and international logistics. Consequently, infrastructure projects in Entikong are heavily focused on enhancing trade efficiency, upgrading transportation networks, and modernizing public service delivery systems to project a strong and capable national presence at the frontier.

Conversely, the adjacent Sekayam Transmigration Area is designated as a Supporting Service Center. The strategic blueprint for Sekayam envisions a diversified development trajectory that encompasses national defense and security functions, regional economic integration, and long-term food self-sufficiency. By leveraging its vast agricultural potential through the historical framework of the transmigration program, Sekayam is slated to become a vital hinterland supplier capable of feeding both local markets and the growing commercial demands of the Entikong trade zone.

Optimizing the Role of Cross-Border Posts

A major focal point of the inter-agency meeting was the optimization of the Cross-Border Post, commonly known as Pos Lintas Batas Negara (PLBN). In recent years, the Indonesian government has invested heavily in constructing modern, state-of-the-art PLBN facilities across the archipelago’s land borders to replace outdated, rudimentary checkpoints. These modern posts are envisioned as more than mere immigration and customs barriers; they are designed to function as catalysts for regional economic growth.

During the discussions, officials emphasized that the physical presence of the PLBN must be supported by the synchronized development of surrounding economic zones. Without integrated planning in the hinterlands, the benefits of the modern PLBN risk remaining isolated, failing to stimulate local entrepreneurship or integrate regional producers into broader supply chains. Therefore, the strategic alignment between the BNPP and the Coordinating Ministry for People’s Empowerment focuses heavily on developing supporting infrastructure in the zones surrounding the checkpoint. This includes establishing local markets, cold storage facilities, logistics parks, and agro-industrial processing centers tailored to local commodities.

Background and Chronology of Border Development Policies

The dialogue in Jakarta is part of a broader, long-term national policy trajectory aimed at redressing historical disparities between Indonesia’s urban centers and its border regions. For decades, peripheral areas suffered from infrastructural deficits, economic isolation, and high dependency on neighboring countries for basic goods and services.

The turning point in modern Indonesian border governance occurred with the enactment of Law No. 43 of 2008 Concerning State Territory, which mandated the establishment of a dedicated agency to manage national borders. This led to the formation of the BNPP, which coordinates policies among various ministries, non-ministerial government institutions, and regional governments.

Over the past decade, the national strategy has transitioned through distinct phases:

  1. Phase One: Emergency Infrastructure and Security Upgrades (2014–2019). This initial phase focused on constructing trunk roads, rehabilitating security posts, and building the first wave of modern PLBNs to establish visible sovereign presence and improve basic connectivity.
  2. Phase Two: Economic Integration and Connectivity (2020–2024). Attention shifted toward connecting border regions to domestic supply chains, improving telecommunications access, and expanding basic utilities such as electricity and clean water.
  3. Phase Three: Integrated Regional Development and Self-Sufficiency (2025–Present). The current phase, exemplified by the recent talks between the BNPP and the Coordinating Ministry for People’s Empowerment, emphasizes holistic regional planning, economic diversification, agro-industrial development, and localized capacity building to ensure sustainable community livelihoods.

Socioeconomic Realities of Sanggau Regency and Sekayam

To fully understand the implications of the Entikong-Sekayam development initiative, it is necessary to examine the socio-economic landscape of Sanggau Regency within West Kalimantan. Sanggau shares an extensive land border with the state of Sarawak, Malaysia, making it a critical nexus for international relations, bilateral trade, and human mobility.

The Sekayam Transmigration Area within the regency has historically functioned as an agricultural settlement zone, populated largely by transmigrants from Java and Bali alongside indigenous communities. While the area possesses rich soil and significant potential for agricultural and plantation commodities—primarily rubber and palm oil—its economic progress has historically been hindered by logistical bottlenecks, limited access to formal credit markets, and fluctuating commodity prices.

By integrating the Sekayam Transmigration Area with the bustling economic ecosystem of the Entikong border crossing, policymakers aim to create a captive agricultural supply chain. Agricultural produce from Sekayam can be processed locally and funneled through Entikong for export, retaining greater value within the regency rather than being transported raw to distant ports in Pontianak or Kuching.

Institutional Collaboration and Cross-Sectoral Synergy

The complexity of border management necessitates continuous coordination across multiple jurisdictions and institutional portfolios. The meeting between the BNPP and the Coordinating Ministry for People’s Empowerment underscores the necessity of breaking down bureaucratic silos that have historically hampered regional development.

The BNPP brings to the table its regulatory authority over border spatial planning, inter-ministerial coordination, and infrastructural oversight. Meanwhile, the Coordinating Ministry for People’s Empowerment provides the vital social lens, ensuring that economic development translates into poverty alleviation, job creation, educational enhancement, and healthcare accessibility for marginalized populations.

Through this collaborative framework, the agencies are designing intervention programs that target cooperative farming models, vocational training for local youth tailored to border trade demands, and micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) financing schemes. These initiatives are intended to prevent border communities from acting merely as low-wage laborers, empowering them instead to become business owners, logistics operators, and agricultural producers of scale.

Implications and Broader Economic Impacts

The concerted focus on the Entikong-Sekayam corridor carries significant implications for the economic geography of West Kalimantan and national security architecture. Economically, the formalization and upgrading of localized supply chains are expected to reduce transaction costs for cross-border traders, curb informal or illegal trading practices, and enhance state revenue collection through proper customs administration.

From a social perspective, targeted empowerment programs are projected to curb out-migration by young workers seeking employment in urban centers or across the border. By fostering a dynamic local economy anchored in agro-industry and trade services, the region can retain human capital, thereby stabilizing demographic trends in sensitive border sectors.

Furthermore, aligning regional development with national security objectives reinforces the concept of "total people’s defense," wherein prosperous, loyal, and economically resilient border populations act as the primary guardians of national sovereignty. When citizens enjoy a high quality of life and tangible economic stakes in their homeland, the strategic integrity of the national frontier is profoundly strengthened.

Future Outlook and Implementation Timeline

Following the September 2026 coordination meeting, working-level technical teams from both the BNPP and the Coordinating Ministry for People’s Empowerment are expected to draft a comprehensive joint action plan. This roadmap will outline specific budgetary allocations, institutional responsibilities, and implementation timelines for infrastructural projects and community empowerment programs slated for rollout across the Entikong-Sekayam zone.

As these plans transition from the drawing board to physical execution, ongoing monitoring and evaluation mechanisms will be instituted to ensure that developmental milestones are met efficiently. Through sustained cooperation, strategic spatial planning, and targeted social investments, the Entikong and Sekayam regions are well-positioned to evolve into a shining model of integrated border management for the rest of the Indonesian archipelago.

Deepening Bilateral Ties: Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Dato Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Ary Ginanjar Forge Strategic Alliance at Menara 165 Jakarta

In an era where geopolitical alliances are frequently forged through rigid diplomatic channels and formal statecraft, personal diplomacy continues to play an indispensable role in smoothing over diplomatic friction and reinforcing regional stability in Southeast Asia. This dynamic was prominently displayed in the Indonesian capital on Monday, September 21, 2026, when Malaysia’s Deputy Prime Minister, Dato’ Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, paid a high-profile visit to Menara 165 in Jakarta. The visit centered around a high-level meeting with Dr. Ary Ginanjar Agustian, the founder of ESQ Corp and Ary Ginanjar University, marking a significant milestone in bilateral engagements between Indonesia and Malaysia that transcends conventional political boundaries.

Beyond the standard protocol associated with a sitting deputy prime minister, the encounter served as a testament to a robust, decades-long friendship rooted in mutual respect, shared cultural values, and a commitment to spiritual and human capital development. As Southeast Asia navigates a complex economic and geopolitical landscape, the meeting between Ahmad Zahid and Ary Ginanjar underscores how interpersonal trust can act as a vital diplomatic conduit, facilitating harmonious relations between two neighboring nations whose destinies are inextricably linked.

The Chronology of a Two-Decade Partnership

To fully grasp the significance of the September 2026 meeting at Menara 165, it is essential to examine the historical trajectory of the relationship between Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Ary Ginanjar Agustian. Their alliance dates back more than twenty years, originating in the early 2000s when Ahmad Zahid served as Malaysia’s Minister of Religious Affairs. During this formative period, Ary Ginanjar was rapidly expanding his influence as a pioneering educator and the creator of the ESQ (Emotional Spiritual Quotient) leadership model, a framework that integrates high cognitive intelligence, emotional resilience, and spiritual grounding.

Over the ensuing two decades, as Ahmad Zahid ascended through the upper echelons of the Malaysian political establishment—holding critical, high-security portfolios including Minister of Defense and Minister of Home Affairs, prior to assuming his current role as Deputy Prime Minister—the bond between the two men remained remarkably resilient. In an official statement released in Jakarta on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, Ary Ginanjar reflected on the enduring nature of their relationship, emphasizing its immunity to political fluctuations.

"Our friendship does not look at positions, but rather it is a friendship of the heart. In times of joy and sorrow, that relationship has been preserved," Ary Ginanjar stated.

This longevity is particularly noteworthy in the volatile world of international politics, where personal relationships often dissolve once official titles change. The ability of both leaders to maintain an open channel of communication over twenty years has provided a reliable informal backchannel during times when official state-to-state relations experienced turbulence.

Historical Context: Overcoming Bilateral Friction Through Personal Diplomacy

One of the most compelling revelations emerging from the high-level talks at Menara 165 was the recounting of how personal and spiritual diplomacy has historically intervened during moments of acute diplomatic tension between Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur. Ary Ginanjar recalled a particularly sensitive period when Indonesia and Malaysia were embroiled in maritime boundary disputes surrounding the Ambalat block in the Sulawesi Sea—a flashpoint that periodically strained national sentiments in both countries.

During the height of the Ambalat tensions, when nationalist rhetoric ran high and official bilateral talks faced severe headwinds, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi—who was then serving as Malaysia’s Minister of Defense—chose to undertake a visit to Menara 165. Rather than adhering strictly to insulated diplomatic channels, the visit was leveraged to create a neutral, informal space that brought together key defense and security figures from both Indonesia and Malaysia in an atmosphere of constructive dialogue.

Analysts note that such informal platforms are critical in international relations. While formal diplomatic negotiations are bound by strict protocols, public postures, and domestic political pressures, backchannel dialogues rooted in pre-existing personal trust allow leaders to de-escalate tensions away from the glare of media scrutiny. By utilizing a philosophical and spiritual hub like Menara 165 as a meeting ground, both leaders demonstrated that shared cultural affinity and human-to-human connection can effectively neutralize nationalist posturing and pave the way for formal diplomatic resolutions.

The Role of ESQ Corp and Ary Ginanjar University in Regional Human Capital

The choice of venue—Menara 165, the headquarters of ESQ Corp and the academic seat of Ary Ginanjar University—highlights another critical dimension of the visit: the shared vision of both leaders regarding human capital development, leadership, and moral integrity in governance.

In recent years, both Indonesia and Malaysia have faced the challenge of preparing their workforce and leadership pipelines for the demands of the fourth industrial revolution, rapid technological disruption, and shifting global economic power centers. The ESQ leadership model, which emphasizes character building alongside professional competence, has found a receptive audience not only in Indonesia but also across the wider Malay Archipelago, including Malaysia, Brunei, and Singapore.

During the September 2026 discussions, both leaders reportedly explored avenues for expanding educational and leadership collaborations between Malaysian institutions and Ary Ginanjar University. By fostering academic exchanges, joint research initiatives, and cross-border leadership training programs, the two figures aim to cultivate a new generation of civil servants, corporate executives, and policymakers who share a common ethical framework and a cooperative vision for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Broader Implications for Indonesia-Malaysia Relations

The visit of Malaysia’s Deputy Prime Minister to Jakarta carries profound implications for the broader bilateral relationship between Indonesia and Malaysia as they look toward the future. Geopolitically, Indonesia and Malaysia are the twin pillars of ASEAN stability. Their alignment on regional security, economic integration, trade, and the protection of migrant workers is vital for the collective prosperity of Southeast Asia.

By maintaining robust informal ties at the leadership level, both nations are better equipped to manage recurring bilateral issues, such as labor migration policies, environmental concerns like transboundary haze, and maritime demarcations. The meeting at Menara 165 serves as a practical reminder that effective diplomacy relies not merely on treaties and institutional frameworks, but equally on the proactive cultivation of mutual understanding and personal rapport among regional leaders.

Furthermore, as ASEAN grapples with external pressures from major power competition in the Indo-Pacific, solidarity between its founding members remains paramount. The seamless interaction between Dato’ Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Dr. Ary Ginanjar Agustian exemplifies the enduring strength of "Serumpun" ties—the cultural and historical kinship shared by the peoples of Indonesia and Malaysia.

Conclusion

The visit of Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to Menara 165 on September 21, 2026, transcends a routine diplomatic courtesy call. It stands as a powerful reaffirmation of a two-decade-long personal alliance that has weathered geopolitical storms and contributed quietly to regional stability. Through a combination of shared values, historical resilience, and a mutual commitment to ethical leadership, Ahmad Zahid and Ary Ginanjar have demonstrated how human connections can reinforce international bridges. As Indonesia and Malaysia continue to navigate the complexities of the 21st century, the enduring partnership forged between these two leaders remains a shining example of constructive bilateral engagement and regional solidarity.
