BNN: Vape Legal Berpita Cukai Tidak Mengandung Narkoba

by Nana
written by Nana

The National Narcotics Agency of Indonesia, commonly known as Badan Narkotika Nasional (BNN), has officially confirmed that electronic cigarettes, widely referred to as vapes, which circulate through legal channels and bear official excise tax stamps, are entirely free from illicit narcotics substances. This definitive statement serves as a crucial clarification amid mounting public concerns and misinformation surrounding the safety and regulatory compliance of modern vaping products. The official stance was highlighted following comprehensive laboratory analyses and collaborative intelligence monitoring conducted by forensic units under the agency’s jurisdiction.

In response to the declaration by BNN, key representatives from the national vaping industry association have expressed their unwavering commitment to maintaining stringent regulatory compliance. Industry leaders have pledged to work hand-in-hand with law enforcement and regulatory bodies to proactively prevent product tampering, curb the distribution of illicit substances, and safeguard the integrity of the domestic electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS) ecosystem.

Forensic Findings and Laboratory Analysis

The official clarification was delivered by the Head of the Laboratory Center of BNN, Brigadier General Pol. Supiyanto, during a focused multi-stakeholder discussion addressing substance abuse trends. According to Brigadier General Supiyanto, extensive analytical testing performed on legally marketed vaping liquids consistently yields negative results for prohibited narcotics and psychotropic substances.

“Indeed, those products that are legal have never been found to contain narcotics,” Supiyanto stated, emphasizing the strict oversight applied to products meeting domestic manufacturing and distribution standards.

The laboratory center’s findings draw a sharp, undeniable distinction between regulated commercial entities and underground black-market operators. While legitimate manufacturers operate under strict supervision, adhering to standardized chemical formulations and registering their products with the Directorate General of Customs and Excise under the Ministry of Finance, illicit enterprises bypass all forms of quality control. Consequently, all documented cases involving vape cartridges laced with illegal substances—such as synthetic cannabinoids, marijuana derivatives, or other prohibited compounds—have exclusively originated from unverified, illegal products that lack proper taxation and regulatory certification.

The Broader Safety Debate: Nicotine vs. Illicit Additives

While BNN has cleared legal vaping products of containing illicit narcotics, public health experts and regulatory authorities continue to monitor the broader health implications associated with electronic nicotine delivery systems. The agency maintains that even nicotine-containing products that are legally distributed carry inherent health risks, particularly for underage users and non-smokers. However, the introduction of illicit narcotics into black-market vape liquids represents an escalating criminal threat that merges public health crises with organized drug trafficking.

BNN: Vape Legal Berpita Cukai Tidak Mengandung Narkoba

Public health agencies and law enforcement divisions have noted a disturbing global trend where illicit actors exploit the popularity of discreet consumption methods. By dissolving synthetic drugs into vaping liquids, criminal syndicates attempt to evade detection by conventional law enforcement methods. The absence of excise tax stamps on these dangerous products remains the single most reliable indicator for consumers and authorities to identify potential safety hazards.

Collaborative Regulatory Framework and Inter-Agency Synergy

Addressing the multifaceted challenges posed by illicit vaping products requires robust cooperation among multiple government bodies and industry stakeholders. BNN has actively engaged with the Directorate General of Customs and Excise (Direktorat Jenderal Bea dan Cukai), the Indonesian Food and Drug Authority (BPOM), and authorized vaping industry associations to establish an integrated communication and enforcement network.

This cooperative approach aims to streamline intelligence sharing, track suspicious distribution channels, and crack down on clandestine laboratories producing adulterated liquids. Industry associations have implemented internal auditing mechanisms and educational campaigns to inform consumers about the dangers of purchasing unverified, untaxed products. By reinforcing the supply chain, legitimate businesses aim to protect their market share while ensuring that public safety remains paramount.

Economic Impact and the Legal Vaping Ecosystem in Indonesia

The Indonesian vaping sector has evolved into a significant economic contributor over the past decade, generating thousands of jobs across manufacturing, distribution, retail, and agricultural sectors—particularly in the cultivation and processing of domestic tobacco and flavoring extracts. The implementation of the excise tax system on electronic cigarettes has provided a steady stream of state revenue while establishing a formalized framework to monitor product standards.

However, the proliferation of unregulated, illegal imports and counterfeit domestic products threatens both the economic stability of compliant businesses and public safety. Industry analysts point out that high taxation on legal products can inadvertently drive vulnerable consumers toward cheaper, unregulated black-market alternatives if enforcement against contraband is lax. Therefore, BNN’s recent clarification serves dual purposes: it reassures consumers of the rigorous standards maintained by tax-compliant brands, and it refocuses law enforcement pressure squarely where it belongs—on illicit, untaxed operators.

Future Outlook and Preventive Strategies

Looking ahead, BNN and its institutional partners plan to expand public awareness campaigns targeting youth communities, educational institutions, and digital spaces. These initiatives are designed to educate the public on how to differentiate between legal, excise-stamped products and dangerous contraband. Furthermore, law enforcement agencies intend to leverage advanced digital tracking technologies and enhanced border controls to stem the inflow of illegal synthetic compounds frequently disguised as vaping liquids.

The ongoing dialogue between state regulators and industry leaders marks a proactive step toward a transparent, secure, and legally compliant market. As the landscape of alternative nicotine and tobacco products continues to evolve, the cooperation between government oversight bodies and commercial stakeholders will remain the cornerstone of consumer protection and public safety in Indonesia.

KH Hasan Abdullah Sahal and the Century-Long Legacy of Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor

by Siti Muinah
written by Siti Muinah

The year 2026 marks a historic milestone for Islamic education in Indonesia as Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor commemorates its centenary, with KH Hasan Abdullah Sahal standing as the central pillar of this monumental celebration. As one of the primary leaders of this influential institution, KH Hasan Abdullah Sahal has navigated the pesantren through decades of institutional evolution, culminating in a grand centennial reception held on September 19, 2026, in Ponorogo, East Java. His leadership not only reflects the continuity of the founding vision of the "Trimurti"—the three legendary founders—but also underscores the resilience of the Gontor model in an increasingly globalized educational landscape.

A Legacy Rooted in the Trimurti

Born in the village of Gontor on May 24, 1947, KH Hasan Abdullah Sahal is the sixth son of KH Ahmad Sahal, one of the three architects of the institution known as the Trimurti, alongside KH Zainuddin Fananie and KH Imam Zarkasyi. Growing up within the cradle of the boarding school environment, his life has been inextricably linked to the pedagogical philosophy established by his father and his colleagues.

The Gontor system, famously centered on the concept of the "Kulliyyatu-l-Mu’allimin Al-Islamiyyah" (KMI), emphasizes a blend of religious orthodoxy and modern educational structure. For KH Hasan, this environment was not merely a place of study but a lifelong vocation. His formal education began at Gontor in 1959, and he completed his KMI training by 1965. This early exposure to the Gontor curriculum provided him with a foundational understanding of the "Gontor spirit," a culture of discipline, sincerity, and intellectual rigor that he would later champion on the national stage.

Academic Pursuits and Global Perspective

The intellectual profile of KH Hasan Abdullah Sahal is defined by a cosmopolitan approach to Islamic studies. After his formative years in Ponorogo, he expanded his academic horizons significantly. Following his studies at the Faculty of Ushuluddin at the Institut Pendidikan Darussalam (IPD) in Gontor, he embarked on an international academic journey that brought him to some of the most prestigious institutions in the Islamic world.

In 1967, he enrolled at the Faculty of Da’wah and Ushuluddin at the Islamic University of Madinah in Saudi Arabia. This period was transformative, exposing him to diverse interpretations of Islamic theology and global pedagogical practices. Decades later, in 1992, he pursued further specialization in Hadith at Al-Azhar University in Egypt. This combination of deep, traditional Islamic scholarship and exposure to diverse intellectual climates has allowed him to lead Gontor with a perspective that balances preservation of tradition with contemporary relevance.

Chronology of Leadership

KH Hasan Abdullah Sahal’s formal tenure as a leader of Gontor began in 1985, a period of significant transition for the institution. He was appointed to the leadership council alongside KH Shoiman Luqmanul Hakim and the late KH Abdullah Syukri Zarkasyi. This troika steered the institution through the late 20th century, a time when Gontor began to aggressively expand its network of affiliated pesantren across the Indonesian archipelago.

The leadership landscape at Gontor shifted following the passing of Prof. Dr. KH Amal Fathullah Zarkasyi on January 3, 2026. Since then, KH Hasan has served alongside KH Muhammad Akrim Mariyat, ensuring a seamless transition during the institution’s most significant anniversary year. His leadership style, often characterized by a stern commitment to the "Panca Jiwa" (Five Spirits) of Gontor, has been instrumental in maintaining the stability of the institution while it navigated the complexities of its centennial expansion.

Educational Innovation and Institutional Expansion

Beyond his direct management of Gontor, KH Hasan has been a prolific founder of educational initiatives. Recognizing the need for specialized learning environments, he founded the Pondok Pesantren Putri Al-Mawaddah in 1989 in Coper, Jetis, Ponorogo, aimed at providing high-quality Islamic education for young women. In 1992, he established the Pondok Tahfidz Quran Al-Muqoddasah, reinforcing his commitment to the preservation of the Quranic tradition.

These initiatives represent a broader strategy of institutionalizing the Gontor model. By diversifying the types of schools under his influence, KH Hasan has helped create a robust ecosystem that supports the academic, spiritual, and vocational development of thousands of students. His literary contributions, such as Allamatnil Hayah (Life Taught Me) and Membina Keluarga Muslim (Building a Muslim Family), serve as pedagogical guides that bridge the gap between academic theory and the lived experience of his students.

The Centenary Celebration and Global Reach

The 100-year anniversary of Gontor in 2026 was not merely a local event; it was a state-level recognition of the institution’s contribution to the Indonesian nation. The presence of President Prabowo Subianto at the September 19 reception highlighted the political and social significance of the pesantren. During his address, KH Hasan articulated a vision for the future that extended beyond the school’s gates, calling for the consolidation of kiai and alumni to address the challenges of the next century.

His international reach is evidenced by his extensive travels across Asia, Europe, and Australia. These visits were not merely ceremonial; they were part of a sustained effort to build a global network of Gontor alumni—a demographic that plays a vital role in the civil society of many nations. On May 30, 2026, his message delivered from the Masjid Nabawi in Madinah resonated with this global community, emphasizing that the "second century" of Gontor must focus on digital literacy, international diplomacy, and scientific advancement while remaining anchored in the core tenets of Islamic values.

Sociopolitical Implications and Future Outlook

The leadership of KH Hasan Abdullah Sahal at this critical juncture provides a stabilizing force for one of Indonesia’s most influential educational institutions. As the nation grapples with the impact of technological disruption and ideological polarization, Gontor remains a "neutral" ground—a place that prides itself on being "above all groups" and "for all groups."

The implications of his leadership are profound. By successfully guiding Gontor through its centennial, KH Hasan has demonstrated that traditional Islamic boarding schools can adapt to the modern world without sacrificing their foundational character. The success of the 100-year celebration, marked by high-level government engagement and widespread public participation, reinforces the reality that the Gontor model is a cornerstone of the Indonesian educational identity.

Looking ahead, the focus for Gontor under the guidance of KH Hasan and his colleagues will likely involve the modernization of its curriculum to include advanced technological studies, environmental stewardship, and a greater emphasis on soft skills required for the global economy. The challenge, as articulated by KH Hasan in his recent speeches, lies in maintaining the balance between the "spirit of the founders" and the "needs of the future."

As the institution embarks on its second century, the legacy of KH Hasan Abdullah Sahal is already firmly established. He stands as a custodian of a pedagogical tradition that has shaped millions of lives. His ability to connect with the younger generation, while simultaneously honoring the wisdom of the past, ensures that the spirit of the Trimurti remains not just a historical reference, but a living, breathing force in the landscape of Indonesian education. The path forward for Gontor is paved with the lessons of the past century, a journey that KH Hasan continues to lead with unwavering dedication to the intellectual and spiritual enlightenment of the Muslim community.

Historic Left Surge in Berlin Propels Elif Eralp Toward Possible Mayoral Bid as Capital Embraces Progressive Reform

by Layla Zulfa
written by Layla Zulfa

BERLIN — In a political earthquake that has reverberated across Europe and beyond, voters in the German capital delivered a historic victory on Sunday to Elif Eralp, a human rights activist and prominent figure of Turkish descent. Eralp’s sweeping electoral performance has positioned her as a strong contender to become the first-ever migrant-background mayor of Germany’s most prominent city-state.

The extraordinary surge by Die Linke (The Left Party), spearheaded by Eralp, has completely reshaped the local political landscape. Capturing 25.7% of the total vote share, the democratic socialist party more than doubled its support compared to municipal elections held three years prior. The outcome represents a staggering reversal of fortunes for a political formation that languished in the mid-teens in public opinion polls as recently as the spring. Analysts and pollsters view the unprecedented leap not merely as a temporary fluctuation, but as definitive proof that Eralp has successfully captured the public mood, earning the profound trust of Berlin’s diverse electorate.

Addressing a roaring crowd of jubilant supporters late Sunday evening, Eralp struck a conciliatory yet triumphant tone. "Berliners, thank you—thank you for your trust," she declared. "Together, we made history today. Starting from this moment, we are going to change Berlin—together." Emphasizing the core tenets of her campaign, she asserted that "love and justice" had decisively overcome "hate."

The Groundbreaking Rise of Elif Eralp

The triumph of the 44-year-old politician is the culmination of decades of grassroots activism, legal advocacy, and a deeply personal understanding of the migrant experience in Germany. Born in Munich in 1981, Eralp is the daughter of parents who fled to Germany from Turkey in the wake of the tumultuous 1980 military coup. Her formative years were defined by geographic mobility and early encounters with systemic adversity, growing up in the cities of Dortmund and Hamburg before ultimately settling in Berlin, where she has resided for the past sixteen years.

Eralp’s journey toward political prominence was forged in the crucible of personal and societal observation. She has frequently recounted how witnessing instances of injustice and discrimination during her childhood served as the primary catalyst for her decision to pursue a career in law. Furthermore, her worldview was profoundly shaped during her primary school years, when she directly confronted the wave of violent, far-right extremism that targeted migrant communities across reunified Germany throughout the early 1990s. These harrowing experiences cemented her commitment to human rights advocacy, laying the intellectual and moral foundation for her eventual entry into radical municipal politics.

The Zohran Mamdani Comparison and Campaign Strategy

In the months leading up to the election, political commentators, international media outlets, and grassroots organizers drew striking parallels between Eralp’s insurgent political rise and the landmark 2025 mayoral victory of Zohran Mamdani in New York City. Eralp herself actively embraced the comparison during the grueling final weeks of the campaign, recognizing the shared ideological DNA and neighborhood-level organizing tactics between the two campaigns.

"I hope what is possible in Manhattan, New York, can also be realized here in Berlin," Eralp stated in an interview with the Anadolu news agency just days before the polls opened. "Mamdani focused on social demands, and that is precisely what we are doing. He also succeeded in uniting various communities—a major achievement—and that is what we are striving for as well."

Mirroring Mamdani’s populist yet pragmatic platform, Eralp placed the pressing economic realities of daily life at the absolute center of her campaign. Rather than getting bogged down in abstract ideological debates, her platform zeroed in on the acute crises weighing heavily on working-class Berliners: skyrocketing residential rental costs, escalating public transportation tariffs, and deteriorating municipal services, including urban sanitation and street-cleaning backlogs.

To reach voters disillusioned with mainstream political parties, Eralp’s campaign team executed a relentless, door-to-door ground game. Activists canvassed diverse neighborhoods across the capital, deliberately bypassing traditional safe havens to engage voters directly in areas known for supporting the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. This boots-on-the-ground approach proved remarkably effective at piercing political echo chambers and building cross-demographic coalitions.

Policy Proposals and Economic Reform Agenda

Eralp’s platform offers concrete, interventionist solutions to Berlin’s most entrenched systemic problems, particularly the housing affordability crisis that has plagued the city for over a decade. Her proposed legislative measures include the implementation of strict price ceilings on municipal government-owned residential apartments, a policy designed to stem the relentless tide of gentrification.

Additionally, she has proposed the creation of a specialized government oversight agency dedicated to investigating and penalizing illegal rent hikes by private landlords. Perhaps most ambitiously, Eralp has vowed to revive stalled public initiatives aimed at the municipal expropriation of large corporate housing conglomerates, bringing vast residential portfolios back into public ownership. Through these measures, she insists that a Left-led Berlin administration can systematically dismantle structural inequality and ensure the city remains economically viable for working-class families, students, and artists.

Chronology of a Political Upsurge

The path to Sunday’s historic victory was marked by strategic recalibration and disciplined execution by Die Linke under Eralp’s direction:

  • Spring: Public opinion polls place Die Linke in the mid-teens, reflecting voter apathy and fractures within the broader German left.
  • Summer: Eralp shifts the campaign narrative away from national geopolitics toward hyper-local economic grievances, directly targeting housing and cost-of-living pressures.
  • Early Autumn: Intensification of door-to-door canvassing operations, expanding outreach into outer districts and working-class neighborhoods traditionally contested by conservative and far-right factions.
  • Final Week: International comparisons to New York’s Zohran Mamdani gain traction in media coverage, boosting volunteer enthusiasm and campaign momentum.
  • Sunday: Voters deliver a stunning 25.7% mandate to Die Linke, more than doubling its previous electoral footprint and positioning Eralp as a leading candidate for the capital’s mayoral office.

Broader Implications and Political Reactions

The outcome in Berlin has sent shockwaves through Germany’s federal political establishment, raising urgent questions about the changing dynamics of urban electorates in Western Europe. Political analysts note that the result reflects a growing disillusionment with traditional centrist governance, particularly among younger urban voters and migrant communities who feel excluded from economic prosperity.

While supporters celebrate the result as a triumph of multiculturalism and progressive social democracy, establishment parties have responded with cautious trepidation. Moderate conservatives and market-liberal politicians have expressed alarm over Eralp’s interventionist housing policies, warning that measures such as rent caps and corporate expropriation could deter vital private investment in real estate and municipal infrastructure.

Conversely, labor unions, tenant advocacy groups, and social justice organizations have hailed the election outcome as a long-overdue mandate for economic redistribution and social equity. As coalition negotiations loom and the practical realities of forming a governing majority begin to set in, all eyes will remain fixed on Berlin to see whether Elif Eralp can successfully translate her revolutionary rhetoric into sustainable, effective urban governance.

The Rise, Fall, and Legacy of the Indonesian Communist Party: A Comprehensive Historical Retrospective

by Jia Lissa
written by Jia Lissa

The Indonesian Communist Party, historically known as Partai Komunis Indonesia (PKI), stands as one of the most polarizing and structurally consequential political phenomena in modern Southeast Asian history. Before its eventual dismantling and official prohibition in 1966, the PKI evolved from an underground anti-colonial apparatus into an electoral powerhouse, boasting millions of members and wielding substantial influence within the highest echelons of Indonesia’s state governance. The trajectory of the party encapsulates the turbulent sociopolitical currents of the 20th century, bridging the late Dutch colonial era, the crucible of the Indonesian National Revolution, the parliamentary experiments of the 1950s, the autocratic centralization of the Guided Democracy period, and the cataclysmic violence of 1965–1966. Decades after its demise, the historiography surrounding the PKI remains a subject of intense academic inquiry, archival preservation, and national reflection, touching upon unresolved questions of political responsibility, human rights, and the shaping of the contemporary Indonesian nation-state.

Foundations and the Colonial Era

The genesis of organized communist movements in the Dutch East Indies dates back to May 1914, with the establishment of the Indische Sociaal-Democratische Vereeniging (ISDV) by the Dutch socialist Henk Sneevliet and a small cadre of European and Indonesian intellectuals. Operating initially as a splinter faction within the Indies Social Democratic movement, the ISDV sought to inject Marxist ideology into the burgeoning anti-colonial consciousness of the local populace. Through strategic infiltration and ideological alignment with indigenous mass organizations—most notably Sarekat Islam—the movement expanded its operational footprint.

By May 1920, the organization formally transitioned into the Perserikatan Komunis di Hindia (PKH), later officially adopting the name Partai Komunis Indonesia (PKI) in 1924. As the party sought to mobilize the burgeoning proletariat and agrarian workforce against colonial hegemony, internal ideological fractures and radical factions within the leadership pushed for direct confrontation with the Dutch administration.

In November 1926, and subsequently spreading to West Sumatra in early 1927, the PKI spearheaded a premature, poorly coordinated armed insurrection against the Dutch colonial government. The rebellion was swiftly crushed by colonial security forces. In the aftermath, the Dutch administration unleashed severe repressive measures: thousands of party members and suspected sympathizers were arrested, and more than a thousand individuals were exiled to the harsh penal colony of Boven Digoel in remote Papua. The PKI was effectively driven underground, its leadership decimated, and its open political activities banned for the remainder of the colonial period.

The 1948 Madiun Affair and the Post-Independence Crisis

Following the Japanese occupation and Indonesia’s formal declaration of independence on August 17, 1945, the political landscape underwent a radical reconfiguration. The PKI re-emerged from clandestine networks to reassert itself within the national political sphere. However, the young republic was locked in an existential diplomatic and military struggle against returning Dutch colonial forces intent on re-establishing control.

Amidst severe economic austerity, cabinet instability, and ideological polarization between the republican government—led by President Sukarno and Vice President Mohammad Hatta—and leftist factions, tensions boiled over in September 1948. The immediate catalyst was the Rationalization Program (RERA) initiated by the Hatta cabinet, which aimed to downsize and professionalize the Indonesian military by demobilizing irregular armed units, including various pro-leftist militias.

On September 18, 1948, leftist groups coalesced under the banner of the Front Demokrasi Rakyat (FDR)—which included the PKI, the Socialist Party, and labor organizations—and seized control of Madiun, East Java. Proclaiming the "Soviet Republic of Indonesia," the insurgent leadership challenged the authority of the central government in Yogyakarta.

President Sukarno responded decisively, broadcasting an urgent appeal to the public to choose between him and Hatta or the Madiun insurrectionists. The Indonesian military, under the command of Colonel Sungkono and then-Colonel Abdul Haris Nasution, launched a rapid counter-offensive. Within weeks, the rebellion was neutralized. Key communist leaders, including Musso, were killed during military operations, while Amir Sjarifuddin and other prominent figures were subsequently captured and executed. The Madiun Affair left deep scars within the national consciousness, establishing a profound, enduring animosity between the military establishment, mainstream nationalist and religious groups, and the Indonesian communist movement.

Resurgence and Electoral Triumph in the 1950s

Despite the catastrophic setback of 1948, the PKI exhibited remarkable organizational resilience. By the early 1950s, under the dynamic new leadership of Dipa Nusantara (D.N.) Aidit, Njoto, Lukman, and Sudisman, the party underwent a comprehensive internal overhaul. Abandoning the adventurist, insurrectionary tactics that characterized the Madiun episode, the new leadership pivoted toward a strategy of legal, mass-based parliamentary politics combined with extensive grassroots mobilization.

The Aidit-led PKI systematically expanded its operational reach by embedding itself within the daily socioeconomic struggles of ordinary Indonesians. The party established and dominated numerous massive auxiliary organizations catering to distinct demographic segments: SOBSI (All-Indonesia Central Labor Organization) for industrial workers, BTI (Indonesian Peasants Front) for rural farmers, Lekra (Institute of People’s Culture) for artists and intellectuals, as well as robust wings for women (Gerwani) and youth (Pemuda Rakyat). This multi-layered strategy transformed the PKI into a formidable social welfare and political network, particularly across rural Java.

The efficacy of this strategy was unequivocally demonstrated during Indonesia’s first nationwide parliamentary elections in 1955. According to official data from the General Elections Commission (KPU), the PKI secured an astonishing 6,179,914 votes, translating to 16.36 percent of the total national vote and capturing 39 seats in the People’s Representative Council (DPR). This placed the party fourth nationally, trailing only the Indonesian National Party (PNI), Masyumi, and Nahdlatul Ulama (NU). In the subsequent elections for the Constituent Assembly (Konstituante), the party further consolidated its standing, garnering approximately 6.23 million votes and securing 80 seats. By the mid-1950s, the PKI was no longer a marginal underground faction but a central pillar of Indonesia’s vibrant yet volatile parliamentary democracy.

The Guided Democracy Era and Nasakom

The paralysis of the parliamentary system, characterized by short-lived coalition cabinets and deepening regional rebellions, prompted President Sukarno to dismantle the constitutional democracy framework and declare the return to the 1945 Constitution, ushering in the era of "Guided Democracy" following his presidential decree on July 5, 1959.

Under Guided Democracy, political power became heavily centralized around President Sukarno, who sought to balance the three major ideological streams in Indonesian society: nationalism, religion, and communism. To institutionalize this equilibrium, Sukarno promulgated the political concept of Nasakom (Nasionalisme, Agama, Komunisme).

For the PKI, Nasakom provided unprecedented political legitimacy and protection. Aligning itself closely with Sukarno’s anti-imperialist rhetoric and foreign policy objectives—such as the confrontation against Malaysia (Konfrontasi) and the withdrawal from the United Nations—the party experienced a meteoric rise in official political standing. By the early 1960s, the PKI claimed a membership base numbering in the millions, supported by tens of millions more through its front organizations.

However, this expansion occurred alongside an escalating polarization of Indonesian society. The PKI’s aggressive unilateral implementation (Aksi Sepihak) of land reform policies in rural Java—designed to redistribute land from wealthy landowners and religious elites (particularly affiliated with the Nahdlatul Ulama) to impoverished peasants—triggered bitter local conflicts. Concurrently, tensions between the PKI and the Indonesian Army (Angkatan Darat) reached a boiling point. The military viewed the communist party’s growing influence, coupled with its persistent lobbying for the creation of a "Fifth Force" (arming workers and peasants outside the traditional military chain of command), as an existential threat to national security and the state apparatus.

The 1965 Crisis: G30S and the Historiographical Debate

The fragile political equilibrium engineered by Sukarno shattered dramatically on the night of September 30 and the early hours of October 1, 1965. A military faction operating under the designation of the "30 September Movement" (G30S), led by Lieutenant Colonel Untung Syamsuri of the Tjakrabirawa Presidential Guard, carried out a coordinated operation in Jakarta. The movement abducted and assassinated six senior Army generals and one officer, subsequently dumping their bodies in a well in the Lubang Buaya area on the outskirts of the capital.

The stated rationale of the G30S leaders was to preempt an alleged coup d’état by a shadowy "Council of Generals" supposedly backed by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). However, the intervention of Major General Suharto, who assumed command of strategic army elements in the capital following the incapacitation of Army Commander General Ahmed Yani, rapidly dismantled the movement within days.

The exact nature of the PKI’s institutional involvement in the G30S has remained one of the most heavily scrutinized and debated subjects in modern Southeast Asian historiography.

  • The New Order Narrative: The official narrative constructed during President Suharto’s New Order regime (1966–1998) maintained that the G30S was entirely orchestrated and executed by the PKI as part of a premeditated, treasonous conspiracy to overthrow the legitimate government and establish a communist state.
  • Alternative Academic Analyses: Subsequent independent historical research—utilizing declassified diplomatic archives from the United States, Great Britain, and Japan, alongside domestic records—has advanced various alternative interpretations. These analyses suggest that while certain high-ranking PKI leaders (such as D.N. Aidit, Sjam Kamaruzaman, and Sudisman) were deeply and independently implicated in the conspiracy, the party as a vast institutional mass organization did not officially sanction or prepare for the operation. Other interpretations view the event as an internal military factional conflict wherein the communist leadership was disastrously manipulated or drawn into an opportunistic alliance.

The National Archives of Republic Indonesia (ANRI) has repeatedly emphasized that comprehensive historical scholarship requires rigorous cross-examination of multi-national archival sources, distinguishing clearly between verified documentation, formal state decrees, and evolving historical interpretations. Meanwhile, the Indonesian National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) has documented that the assassination of the generals served as the trigger for an unprecedented wave of mass violence across the archipelago.

The Fall of the PKI and the 1965–1966 Violence

In the immediate wake of the collapsed G30S movement, the political landscape of Indonesia underwent a radical and bloody transformation. Major General Suharto systematically consolidated military authority, marginalizing President Sukarno and initiating a nationwide crackdown on the PKI, its mass organizations, and anyone suspected of leftist sympathies.

Between late 1965 and 1966, a massive campaign of mass killings, arbitrary arrests, forced internments, and systemic violence swept across Central Java, East Java, Bali, and parts of Sumatra. The violence was executed by military units acting in tandem with civilian vigilante groups, religious militias, and anti-communist youth organizations.

According to official investigations and findings by Komnas HAM, the human cost of this period constituted grave human rights violations, encompassing:

  • Mass extrajudicial killings estimated by historians to range from several hundred thousand to over one million victims.
  • Mass arbitrary detention without trial in concentration camps and prisons across the country.
  • Systematic use of sexual violence, torture, forced labor, and forced displacement.
  • The stigmatization and civil disenfranchisement of millions of surviving family members and relatives of suspected communists, who faced systemic discrimination, employment bans, and denial of basic civil rights for decades under the New Order administration.

Legal Ban and Dissolution in 1966

The political dismantling of the PKI was formalized through strict legislative and executive actions in 1966:

  1. March 12, 1966: Major General Suharto, acting under the authority of the Presidential Decree of March 11 (Supersemar), issued Presidential Decree No. 1/1965-1966, formally dissolving the PKI and banning all its constituent mass organizations, declaring them illegal entities across the territory of the Republic of Indonesia.
  2. July 5, 1966: The Provisional People’s Consultative Assembly (MPRS) ratified and strengthened this executive decision by issuing MPRS Decree No. XXV/MPRS/1966. This foundational decree formally prohibited the PKI throughout Indonesia and explicitly banned any activities aimed at propagating or developing Marxist, Leninist, and communist teachings.

This decree remains a formal part of the Indonesian legal framework. In subsequent decades, the status, interpretation, and enforcement of Decree No. XXV have been subject to ongoing constitutional debates regarding human rights, freedom of expression, and democratic governance, though the formal legal prohibition against the dissemination of communist ideology remains intact.

Broader Implications and Historical Legacy

The destruction of the PKI and the subsequent political realignment brought an definitive end to Indonesia’s parliamentary and guided democracy experiments. The shifting balance of power culminated in the formal transfer of executive authority from President Sukarno to General Suharto, who was appointed acting president in 1967 and full president in 1968, inaugurating the 32-year authoritarian rule of the New Order.

For contemporary Indonesia, more than six decades after the events of 1965, the legacy of the PKI remains a sensitive and complex touchstone. Ongoing academic research, archival releases by institutions such as ANRI, and periodic public debates reflect a nation continually grappling with its historical trauma. While the legal proscription against communism remains absolute, modern discussions increasingly emphasize the necessity of historical accuracy, archival transparency, and the humanitarian dimensions of the transition period.

Ultimately, the history of the PKI is far more than a narrative of a single failed rebellion or a dramatic political collapse; it is an extensive, multi-phase chronicle of 20th-century ideological mobilization, systemic social conflict, geopolitical maneuvering, and state transformation that fundamentally forged the political architecture of modern Indonesia.

Tok! DPRD DKI Sahkan APBD Perubahan 2026 Jadi Rp79,56 Triliun

by Neng Nana
written by Neng Nana

The Jakarta Regional House of Representatives (DPRD DKI Jakarta) has officially ratified the Revised Regional Budget (APBD-P) for the 2026 fiscal year, setting the total ceiling at Rp79.56 trillion. This figure represents a strategic adjustment from the initial budget allocation of Rp81.32 trillion, reflecting a contraction of approximately Rp1.76 trillion. The approval was formalized during a plenary session held on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, marking a pivotal moment in the city’s fiscal planning as it navigates the latter half of the year.

The decision to revise the budget downward is indicative of the Jakarta Provincial Government’s efforts to realign its financial trajectory with current economic realities and revenue collection performance. By optimizing expenditures, the administration aims to ensure that core public services remain uninterrupted while maintaining the sustainability of ongoing strategic infrastructure projects.

Contextualizing the Fiscal Adjustment

In municipal governance, the "APBD Perubahan" or Revised Budget is a standard mechanism employed to respond to dynamic changes in the economic landscape. These changes often stem from fluctuations in local revenue sources, such as regional taxes and levies, or unforeseen shifts in national economic indicators. The reduction from Rp81.32 trillion to Rp79.56 trillion suggests that the executive branch, in coordination with the legislature, has prioritized fiscal discipline to prevent potential deficits while ensuring that funds are allocated to the most critical sectors.

For the citizens of Jakarta, this adjustment is not merely a bookkeeping exercise but a reflection of how the city manages its post-pandemic economic recovery and long-term development goals. The administration, led by Acting Governor Rano Karno, has signaled that the revised budget is designed to stimulate economic growth, bolster social safety nets, and maintain the momentum of public infrastructure development.

The Legislative Process: A Synergy of Oversight

The ratification of the budget was the culmination of weeks of intensive deliberation between the Jakarta Provincial Government and the various factions within the DPRD. The process involved rigorous scrutiny by the Budget Committee (Banggar) of the council, which examined every line item to ensure compliance with legal frameworks and transparency standards.

During the final plenary session, Deputy Governor Rano Karno emphasized the importance of the partnership between the executive and legislative branches. He acknowledged the constructive feedback provided by council members, noting that the recommendations gathered during the committee hearings would serve as a blueprint for the executive branch’s implementation phase in the remaining months of 2026.

"The executive remains committed to the spirit of collaboration," Rano stated during his address. "The input provided by the DPRD is essential for ensuring that our programs are not only efficient but also directly address the needs of the Jakartan populace. We view these recommendations as a guide to improving our service delivery and fiscal accountability."

Economic Implications for the Capital

Economists tracking the Jakarta budget note that a reduction in the headline figure does not necessarily signal a decline in service quality. Instead, it often points to a "right-sizing" strategy. By cutting excess or underperforming programs, the government can redirect resources toward high-impact areas such as flood mitigation, public transportation expansion, and the digital transformation of public services.

The Jakarta administration is currently balancing several massive infrastructure projects that are vital for the city’s future as a global business hub. These include the continued development of the mass rapid transit (MRT) network, the revitalization of urban spaces, and efforts to improve air quality through green initiatives. The Revised APBD 2026 is expected to provide the necessary liquidity to keep these projects on schedule, despite the overall reduction in total spending capacity.

Timeline of the 2026 Budget Cycle

The fiscal journey for 2026 began in late 2025 with the initial proposal and approval of the main APBD. The following timeline outlines the key milestones that led to the recent ratification:

  • November 2025: The initial APBD for 2026 was debated and passed by the DPRD, setting the original ceiling at Rp81.32 trillion.
  • April–June 2026: Mid-year performance reviews were conducted by the Jakarta Provincial Government to assess revenue collection trends and expenditure rates.
  • August 2026: The executive branch submitted the draft for the Revised APBD (Ranperda Perubahan APBD) to the DPRD.
  • September 2026: Intensive committee-level meetings took place to refine the budget, resulting in the final agreement on the Rp79.56 trillion figure.
  • September 22, 2026: The official plenary session held at the DPRD building resulted in the final passage of the revised budget.

Strategic Priorities for the Remainder of 2026

With the revised budget now in place, the focus shifts to the implementation phase. Key sectors that are expected to benefit from the prioritized funding include:

APBD DKI 2026 Turun Jadi Rp79,56 Triliun, Rano Karno Pastikan Program Prioritas Tetap Berjalan
  1. Public Infrastructure: Maintenance and development of the city’s drainage systems to mitigate seasonal flooding, as well as the ongoing expansion of non-motorized transport lanes, including the city’s dedicated bicycle paths.
  2. Social Welfare: Sustained funding for the Jakarta Smart Card (KJP) and the Jakarta Health Card (KJS), which serve as critical support systems for lower-income families.
  3. Economic Stimulus: Targeted investments to support Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), which form the backbone of Jakarta’s economy.
  4. Digital Governance: Accelerating the "Smart City" initiative to streamline administrative processes and improve public access to government services via digital platforms.

Stakeholder Reactions and Expectations

While the DPRD has provided its stamp of approval, the council members have emphasized that they will continue to exercise their oversight function. Several factions within the DPRD have urged the executive to ensure that the budget reduction does not compromise the quality of essential services. There is a strong call for the provincial government to improve its revenue collection efficiency, particularly in sectors where tax compliance remains below target.

Public policy analysts suggest that the transparency displayed during this budget revision process is a positive sign for governance in the capital. By allowing for open debate on where to trim the budget, the DPRD and the administration have provided a degree of accountability that is crucial for maintaining public trust.

Looking Ahead

As Jakarta moves into the final quarter of 2026, the success of the Revised APBD will be measured by its tangible outcomes. The city faces significant challenges, including urban density, environmental concerns, and the need to maintain its competitive edge as a financial center. The Rp79.56 trillion budget is a carefully calculated instrument designed to navigate these challenges.

The collaboration between Rano Karno’s administration and the city’s legislature will remain under the microscope. Observers expect that the lessons learned during this fiscal year will inform the planning for the 2027 budget, which will likely begin in the coming months. For now, the city government is tasked with the immediate mandate of executing the revised programs with precision and integrity, ensuring that every Rupiah serves the objective of enhancing the quality of life for the millions who call Jakarta home.

APBD DKI 2026 Turun Jadi Rp79,56 Triliun, Rano Karno Pastikan Program Prioritas Tetap Berjalan

The plenary session concluded with a sense of collective resolve, as both the executive and legislative branches expressed their commitment to seeing the 2026 fiscal year through to a successful conclusion. With the legal framework now established, the administration is expected to accelerate the disbursement of funds to ensure that all targeted programs reach completion before the end of the year, thereby setting a stable foundation for the transition into the next fiscal cycle.

In recent years, Park Shin Hye has continued to demonstrate her versatility as an actress by taking on complex, mature roles that challenge her dramatic range. Her standout performance in the fantasy-thriller legal drama The Judge from Hell (2024) earned widespread critical acclaim, proving her enduring appeal and capability to draw high viewership ratings. Her ability to transition seamlessly between romantic comedies, melodramas, and genre-bending thrillers has cemented her legacy as a cornerstone of modern Hallyu television.

Similarly, Choi Tae Joon maintains a respected career as a versatile television and film actor. Known for his dependable acting skills and strong screen presence, Choi has built a robust portfolio featuring prominent roles in various television series, including Padam Padam (2011–2012), Missing 9 (2017), and So I Married the Anti-Fan (2021). Demonstrating his continued dedication to his craft, Choi recently starred in the KBS daily drama Iron Family, which successfully concluded its extended run in January 2025. By managing their respective professional commitments while prioritizing their growing family, both actors have earned widespread admiration from industry insiders and the public alike.

Industry Implications and Public Reception

The birth of Park Shin Hye and Choi Tae Joon’s second child reflects a broader, evolving trend within the contemporary South Korean entertainment landscape. In previous decades, celebrity marriages and pregnancies often necessitated a prolonged hiatus or carried potential professional risks, particularly for female actresses operating in a highly competitive market driven by youth and visual appeal. However, the successful career trajectories of artists like Park Shin Hye demonstrate a progressive shift in audience expectations and industry standards.

Modern viewers increasingly embrace the personal milestones of public figures, valuing authenticity, emotional maturity, and balanced lifestyle representations. Park Shin Hye’s seamless continuation of her acting career following the birth of her first child in 2022 serves as a testament to the viability of sustaining high-level artistic productivity while embracing family life. Industry analysts suggest that her mature persona and relatable experiences as a mother may further broaden her casting opportunities, opening doors to nuanced roles that resonate with a mature demographic of television viewers.

Furthermore, the public reception of the news highlights the enduring popularity of celebrity couples whose relationships developed organically over time. Unlike whirlwind romances engineered by media publicity, the relationship between Park Shin Hye and Choi Tae Joon has been characterized by mutual respect, discretion, and steady commitment. This grounded approach has insulated their marriage from excessive tabloid scrutiny, allowing them to cultivate a positive public image that commands genuine respect from fans and media outlets alike.

Looking Ahead: Balancing Family and Future Projects

As Park Shin Hye focuses on her postpartum recovery and early bonding with her newborn daughter, industry watchers anticipate a measured and graceful return to professional activities when the time is right. Both actors have consistently demonstrated a disciplined approach to their careers, ensuring that major professional commitments are carefully timed around significant family events.

The successful expansion of their family underscores a period of profound personal fulfillment for the couple. While managing the dynamic responsibilities of raising two young children—a toddler and a newborn—will undoubtedly introduce new daily routines, Park Shin Hye and Choi Tae Joon enter this phase with a well-established foundation of mutual support and professional stability.

As congratulatory messages continue to pour in from entertainment agencies, celebrity friends, and legions of devoted fans worldwide, the family of four embarks on this harmonious new chapter. The safe arrival of their daughter not only completes their immediate family circle but also signals a resilient and inspiring model of modern celebrity life, where personal joy and professional excellence successfully coexist in the public eye.

Understanding the Nuances of Qadha, Qadar, and Takdir in Islamic Theology and Their Practical Implications for Daily Life

by Lina Hope
written by Lina Hope

The concept of divine decree—known in Islamic theology as Qadha and Qadar—serves as one of the six fundamental pillars of faith (Arkan al-Iman) for Muslims globally. While the belief in divine predestination is a mandatory tenet, the precise linguistic and theological distinctions between the terms "Qadha," "Qadar," and "Takdir" have remained a subject of scholarly discourse for over a millennium. Understanding these concepts is not merely an intellectual exercise; for millions of believers, it is the bedrock of resilience, mental fortitude, and ethical responsibility in navigating the complexities of modern existence.

Defining the Pillars of Divine Decree

At its core, the belief in Qadha and Qadar necessitates the conviction that Allah has absolute knowledge of all events, past, present, and future, and that all occurrences in the universe are written within the "Lauhul Mahfuz" (the Preserved Tablet). Despite this overarching consensus, the technical differentiation between these terms remains a point of exploration for theologians and students of knowledge alike.

The term "Qadar" is linguistically derived from the root "qadara," which relates to measurement, estimation, or capacity. In a theological context, it refers to the specific measures or quantities assigned to all things. "Qadha," on the other hand, is derived from "qada," which signifies completion, execution, or judgment. When these terms are discussed in tandem, scholars generally categorize the perspectives into two primary schools of thought: the school of synonymous usage and the school of distinct technical definitions.

The Perspective of Synonymous Usage

Prominent scholars, including the late Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin Baz, the former Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia, have maintained that Qadha and Qadar are essentially synonymous. From this viewpoint, both terms refer to the divine decree that Allah SWT has established for His creation. Proponents of this view argue that the distinction is largely semantic and that in the lexicon of the Quran and Sunnah, both words are used interchangeably to describe the same reality: the absolute sovereignty of the Creator over the timeline of the universe.

For those who adhere to this perspective, the distinction between the terms does not change the core obligation of the believer, which is to acknowledge that everything happens by the will of God, yet to maintain the personal responsibility to strive and act.

Differentiating the Concepts: Global versus Specific Decree

A significant body of classical scholarship, however, offers a more nuanced, two-tiered framework. This school of thought suggests that while the terms are related, they represent different stages or scopes of the divine decree.

One major viewpoint posits that Qadha refers to the global, universal decree established since "azali" (the beginning of time), while Qadar refers to the specific, incremental execution of those decrees as they manifest in the physical world. Al-Hafidz Ibnu Hajar, in his monumental commentary Fathul Bari, argues that Qadha is the comprehensive blueprint, and Qadar is the detailed manifestation or the "allocation" of those events as they meet specific causes and conditions.

Conversely, another group of scholars, including the renowned linguist Ar-Raghib al-Asfahani, flips this hierarchy. They argue that Qadar is the original divine estimate or decree established in the pre-eternal state, while Qadha is the actualization or "coming to pass" of that event in the tangible realm. Under this interpretation, Qadar is the "plan" and Qadha is the "finalization" of that plan.

Historical and Intellectual Context

The debate over these terms gained traction during the formative centuries of Islamic theology, particularly as scholars sought to reconcile the concept of divine predestination with the human imperative for "Ikhtiyar" (free will).

Historically, this discourse was essential to combat deterministic ideologies that suggested human beings were mere puppets, or conversely, rationalist tendencies that sought to exclude divine intervention from human actions. By clarifying that Qadha and Qadar are not mere "fatalism" but a sophisticated system of divine wisdom, scholars were able to provide a theological framework that encourages both patient acceptance of hardship and proactive engagement in one’s environment.

The Role of Human Agency in Divine Decree

A common misconception regarding the belief in Qadha and Qadar is that it leads to passivity. However, theological discourse consistently emphasizes that belief in divine decree is meant to be a catalyst for action rather than a rationale for inaction.

Islamic scholars, such as Ustaz Ammi Nur Baits, frequently highlight that because humans are unaware of what is written in the "Lauhul Mahfuz," they are obligated to exert their utmost effort in their daily lives. The belief is that one’s efforts (ikhtiar) are themselves part of the divine decree. Therefore, the failure to act is not justified by citing "takdir." Instead, the tradition teaches that one should work as if everything depends on their own efforts, while simultaneously trusting that the outcome is entirely in the hands of the Divine.

Psychological and Sociological Implications

The psychological impact of a balanced understanding of Qadha and Qadar is significant. In an era marked by high levels of anxiety and a cultural obsession with controlling future outcomes, the Islamic perspective offers a mechanism for mental stability.

  1. Resilience in Adversity: When a person views a tragedy as a part of a larger, divinely ordained framework, it often mitigates the severity of trauma, fostering a sense of "Rida" (contentment with God’s decree).
  2. Humility in Success: Conversely, when an individual achieves success, acknowledging that it is a manifestation of Qadar prevents arrogance, as the individual recognizes the role of divine favor rather than relying solely on personal merit.
  3. Reduced Existential Dread: By accepting that the future is already determined by a merciful and wise Creator, believers are often relieved of the burden of "what-ifs," allowing them to focus on the present moment.

Broader Impact and Ethical Framework

The integration of these concepts into the daily lives of Muslims creates a unique ethical framework. If one believes that their sustenance, lifespan, and trials are measured, the incentive to engage in unethical behavior to "secure" one’s future is significantly reduced. This belief system theoretically promotes integrity, as the believer trusts that their provision is fixed and cannot be hastened by sinful acts.

In the contemporary context, this theological understanding acts as a buffer against modern nihilism. As secular society often struggles to find purpose in a world governed by random chance, the Islamic doctrine of Qadar provides a narrative of purpose. Every hardship is seen as a test (ibtilah) designed for spiritual refinement, and every success is seen as a test of gratitude (shukr).

Conclusion: A Balanced Approach to Life

The discourse surrounding the definitions of Qadha, Qadar, and Takdir is far more than a debate over semantics. It represents a sophisticated attempt by the human mind to grasp the intersection of divine infinity and human finiteness. Whether one views these terms as synonymous or as distinct phases of a divine process, the practical outcome for the practitioner remains the same: a life lived with intentionality, characterized by relentless effort and profound spiritual peace.

By understanding that human action is not contradictory to divine decree, but rather a manifestation of it, individuals can move forward with confidence. The belief in these pillars of faith does not invite stagnation; rather, it provides the psychological safety net necessary for the believer to take risks, advocate for justice, and pursue excellence in all fields of endeavor, knowing that the ultimate destination is guided by a wisdom that transcends the limitations of human perception. In this, the concepts of Qadha and Qadar become the silent engine of a dynamic and purposeful life, transforming the inevitable uncertainties of the future into a serene journey of faith.

Earl Charles Spencer Unveils Deep Royal Rifts in New Memoir, Sparking Fresh Controversy Over Princess Diana’s Legacy and Funeral Tensions

by Jia Lissa
written by Jia Lissa

Nearly three decades after standing before a global audience at Westminster Abbey to deliver a searing, emotionally charged eulogy for his late sister, Princess Diana, Earl Charles Spencer has once again thrust the British Royal Family into a storm of public controversy. In his upcoming memoir, the 9th Earl Spencer exposes long-buried familial grievances, leveling explosive allegations against his former brother-in-law, now King Charles III. The revelations have reignited fierce debates across the United Kingdom regarding the treatment of Diana, the handling of her tragic 1997 death, and the enduring psychological toll placed upon her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry.

While Earl Spencer’s initial 1997 address was hailed as a courageous defense of his blood relatives—promising to shield William and Harry from the crushing pressures that drove their mother to despair—critics and royal commentators now suggest that his latest literary endeavor risks reopening old wounds. As excerpts of the book circulate in British media, the royal establishment and the Spencer family find themselves at loggerheads once again, reviving a decades-old narrative of institutional coldness versus familial loyalty.

Who Is Earl Charles Spencer? A Deep Dive Into His Royal Lineage and Background

Born in London on May 20, 1964, Charles Edward Maurice Spencer, the 9th Earl Spencer, occupies a unique space within the intersecting spheres of British aristocracy and the Windsor dynasty. Possessing deep-rooted ties to the British peerage, his connection to the Crown is historical and intimate; the late Queen Elizabeth II served as his godmother, binding his family’s legacy closely to the sovereign institution.

The Spencer family’s prominence is anchored by Althorp, a sprawling 500-year-old historic estate in West Northamptonshire, located roughly two and a half hours north of London. Purchased by the family in 1508, Althorp serves not only as the ancestral seat of the Spencer dynasty but also as the final resting place of Princess Diana, whose grave sits quietly on an island in the estate’s ornamental lake.

Spencer’s educational trajectory reflects his privileged aristocratic upbringing. He attended Eton College, the prestigious boarding school situated near Windsor Castle that has traditionally educated generations of British elites and royals. Following his secondary education, Spencer matriculated at Magdalen College, Oxford, where he read modern history, laying the academic foundation for a subsequent career in media and letters.

Before inheriting the earldom upon the death of his father, the 8th Earl Spencer, in 1992, Charles Spencer forged a successful path in journalism. He spent a decade working as a broadcast correspondent for the American network NBC News starting in 1986, reporting on international affairs before transitioning to historical writing. He has authored several acclaimed books exploring his family’s rich lineage, the histories of prominent British figures, and the reigns of monarchs such as Charles II. Throughout his life, Spencer has been married four times and is the father of seven children—five daughters and two sons.

The Bond Between Brother and Sister: Growing Up at Althorp

The foundation of Earl Spencer’s persistent defense of Princess Diana lies in their shared childhood. Separated by less than three years, Diana and Charles grew up together within the magnificent, yet emotionally complex, environment of Althorp House.

Their early years were marked by privilege, but also by domestic turbulence. Following the painful separation and bitter divorce of their parents—the 8th Earl Spencer and Frances Shand Kydd—the children experienced a fractured household. However, this shared emotional upheaval forged an unbreakable bond between Diana and her younger brother.

When Diana stepped onto the global stage through her engagement and marriage to the then-Prince Charles in 1981, Charles Spencer watched closely as his sister navigated the suffocating constraints, media scrutiny, and emotional isolation of royal life. Long before his famous funeral oration, Spencer had witnessed firsthand the toll that life within the House of Windsor took on his sister, fueling a protective instinct that has persisted well into his adulthood.

The 1997 Funeral Crisis: Allegations Against King Charles III

The most sensational revelations in Spencer’s new book center on the chaotic and emotionally fraught days immediately following Princess Diana’s fatal car crash in Paris on August 31, 1997. According to published excerpts, tensions between the grieving Spencer family and the royal household reached a boiling point behind closed doors.

Spencer claims that then-Prince Charles reacted with "uncontrolled anger" during a telephone conversation following Spencer’s insistence that young Princes William and Harry—then aged 15 and 12 respectively—should not be compelled to walk behind their mother’s coffin in the public funeral procession. Spencer argued that such an ordeal would inflict irreparable psychological damage upon the grieving boys.

Furthermore, the memoir alleges that during the heated exchange, Prince Charles dismissed the long-term impact of the tragedy by remarking that "we will soon forget about it." This specific claim has drawn an aggressive rebuttal from Buckingham Palace, which has categorically denied the assertion, labeling it as a distorted or fabricated account of a historically sensitive moment.

The Battle of Narratives: Gaslighting Accusations and Palace Retaliation

In response to the publication of the book’s excerpts, the royal establishment moved swiftly to counter the narrative, issuing statements that heavily implied Spencer’s judgment was clouded by unhealed grief and emotional bias. Representatives for the monarchy suggested that the enduring trauma of a sibling’s sudden death can distort objective memory decades after the event.

Rather than remaining silent, Earl Spencer fired back with characteristic bluntness. In interviews published over the weekend, he accused the royal apparatus of engaging in "gaslighting"—a psychological manipulation tactic intended to make an individual doubt their own perception of reality.

"It is not a normal occurrence to wake up and find yourself being gaslit by the King," Spencer remarked in an interview with the Mail on Sunday, underscoring the deep institutional hostility that persists between the Spencers and the Windsors.

Public reaction in the United Kingdom has been deeply polarized. Traditional royal commentators and monarchists have criticized Spencer for resurrecting historical friction, questioning the timing and motivation behind the publication. Some critics have accused him of capitalizing on his sister’s enduring global fame to generate commercial success for his memoir. Conversely, supporters have rallied to his defense, arguing that Spencer’s willingness to challenge the royal establishment demonstrates a steadfast commitment to preserving the authentic truth of Diana’s suffering, prioritizing family loyalty over institutional protectionism.

Broader Implications for the Modern Monarchy

The timing of Earl Spencer’s revelations presents a delicate public relations challenge for King Charles III and the broader British Monarchy. As the institution works tirelessly to modernize its image, maintain public affection, and navigate a period of generational transition involving King Charles, Queen Camilla, and the Prince and Princess of Wales (William and Catherine), reminders of past dysfunctions are unwelcome distractions.

For Prince William and Prince Harry, the book acts as an untimely reminder of the most traumatic chapter of their childhoods. Observers note that while Prince William has built a stable life centered around royal duty, Prince Harry has frequently spoken out about the profound psychological scars left by the loss of his mother and the rigid expectations of royal life—themes that closely parallel the assertions made by his uncle.

Ultimately, Earl Spencer’s memoir serves as a poignant reminder that the legacy of Princess Diana remains an open wound within both the Spencer dynasty and the House of Windsor. As history continues to be written and rewritten by those who lived through its most tumultuous moments, Spencer’s decision to break his silence ensures that the debate surrounding the humanity, cost, and inner workings of the British crown will endure for generations to come.

Muhammadiyah Completes Comprehensive Energy Audit of Jakarta Headquarters to Drive Sustainability and Eco-Friendly Practices

by Layla Zulfa
written by Layla Zulfa

JAKARTA — The Central Leadership (Pimpinan Pusat/PP) of Muhammadiyah has officially concluded a rigorous and comprehensive energy audit of its primary administrative headquarters in Jakarta. The audit, which commenced in early September 2026, marks a significant milestone in the organization’s broader institutional commitment to environmental stewardship, operational efficiency, and sustainable governance. The formal conclusion of this technical evaluation was announced during a dedicated closing meeting held on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at the Jakarta office, bringing together key organizational leaders, environmental experts, and facilities management personnel.

The findings and subsequent recommendations derived from this month-long assessment are designed to serve as an actionable blueprint for optimizing power consumption, reducing operational expenditures, and embedding a permanent culture of conservation and resource mindfulness across all administrative and religious facilities managed by the prominent Islamic organization.

Chronology and Scope of the Comprehensive Energy Assessment

Initiated at the onset of September 2026, the energy audit was structured as a methodical and exhaustive evaluation of the entire PP Muhammadiyah Jakarta compound. This sprawling institutional complex encompasses multi-story administrative offices, meeting spaces, and the prominent At-Tanwir Mosque, a central hub for community gatherings and religious observances.

The evaluation team deployed a multidisciplinary approach, scrutinizing every facet of energy consumption within the complex. Key areas of inspection included baseline electricity usage, the operational efficiency and load distribution of central and split air conditioning (AC) units, lighting infrastructure, the integration and performance of existing solar photovoltaic panels, and overall facility-wide energy management practices.

Engineering and environmental specialists conducted on-site testing, reviewed historical utility bills, and mapped energy flow patterns to identify systemic inefficiencies and potential areas for conservation. The systematic review culminated in the September 22 closing meeting, where auditors presented their comprehensive data-driven findings to organizational leadership, laying the groundwork for immediate policy implementation and behavioral transformation among building occupants.

Baseline Findings: General Efficiency Coupled with Clear Optimization Potential

According to the preliminary reports presented during the closing meeting, the energy performance of the PP Muhammadiyah Jakarta complex demonstrates a baseline level of operational efficiency. The facility is not operating under excessive or unregulated power drains; however, the data revealed substantial opportunities for targeted optimization.

The audit identified that while structural energy systems are generally well-maintained, significant energy leakage occurs due to facility maintenance gaps, suboptimal equipment settings, and human behavioral habits regarding daily power usage. Specifically, cooling systems—which typically account for the highest percentage of commercial energy consumption in tropical urban centers like Jakarta—were found to operate under conditions that could be significantly fine-tuned. Furthermore, lighting systems and auxiliary electronic devices frequently remained active during non-peak hours or in unoccupied rooms, highlighting a critical gap between institutional sustainability goals and everyday operational practices.

Strategic Recommendations and Technical Action Plan

To capitalize on the insights generated by the audit, the assessment team formulated a series of practical, high-impact technical recommendations aimed at immediate and long-term energy reduction. These guidelines combine infrastructural adjustments with operational protocols designed for building facility managers and everyday staff alike.

First, the audit strongly advises the implementation of a rigorous, recurring schedule for air conditioning maintenance. Regular cleaning of filters, coils, and ventilation ducts can drastically improve thermodynamic efficiency and reduce compressor strain. Additionally, the operational protocol for climate control has been standardized; building occupants and facility managers are instructed to maintain AC thermostat settings within the optimal health and efficiency range of 23 to 26 degrees Celsius, moving away from excessively low temperature settings that drive up power demand.

Second, the complex’s existing solar panel infrastructure is slated for optimization. Auditors recommended a thorough technical check of the photovoltaic arrays to ensure maximum energy capture and seamless integration with the building’s primary electrical grid, thereby increasing the facility’s reliance on renewable energy sources.

Third, financial and operational monitoring procedures are set to be overhauled. The facility management team will institute a strict monthly utility bill verification protocol. This routine tracking mechanism will allow administrators to immediately detect anomalies, evaluate the direct financial impacts of implemented conservation measures, and gauge month-over-month energy fluctuations with precision.

Religious Imperative and Economic Rationales: Leadership Perspectives

Speaking at the closing meeting, M. Izzul Muslimin, Secretary of PP Muhammadiyah, underscored that the drive for energy efficiency transcends mere administrative cost-cutting or modern environmentalism. He framed the initiative as a profound religious and moral obligation rooted in Islamic teachings.

"Conservation and frugality yield tangible benefits in both this world and the hereafter," Izzul stated during his address. "In this world, operational expenditures are kept under control, ensuring that communal resources are utilized responsibly. In the hereafter, God willing, it carries divine reward, as moderation and the avoidance of waste are explicitly enjoined by the Holy Quran."

Izzul’s remarks align with Muhammadiyah’s historical ethos of progressive Islamic ethics, which views science, technology, and ecological preservation as integral components of faith-based social responsibility. By framing energy conservation as a spiritual duty, the organization seeks to motivate its personnel through intrinsic values rather than solely relying on top-down administrative mandates.

Institutional Policy and the Broader Environmental Mandate

The completion of the energy audit does not stand as an isolated administrative exercise; rather, it represents a pivotal implementation phase of official organizational policy. Specifically, the initiative directly operationalizes Surat Edaran PP Muhammadiyah Nomor 5/EDR/I.0/B/2026, an official circular concerning the promotion of energy efficiency and a culture of frugality across all institutional tiers.

Hening Parlan, Director of Eco Bhinneka—a prominent environmental advocacy and conservation initiative under the Muhammadiyah umbrella—provided a forceful critique of conventional bureaucratic report-writing, emphasizing the imperative of immediate follow-through.

"An energy audit must not be allowed to terminate merely as a static report filed away in a cabinet," Hening asserted. "The findings must serve as the foundational catalyst for substantive policy changes and concrete, measurable actions. Only then can we genuinely observe what has changed, what resource waste has been successfully eliminated, and demonstrate our unwavering institutional consistency in fostering genuinely eco-friendly buildings."

Hening further emphasized that structural and technical upgrades must be mirrored by profound behavioral shifts among all personnel utilizing the facilities. Simple, everyday habits—such as consciously powering down air conditioning units, extinguishing overhead lighting, and completely shutting off auxiliary electronic equipment when spaces are unoccupied—form the bedrock of a sustainable institutional culture.

Broader Implications and Future Trajectory for Muhammadiyah Facilities

The successful conclusion of the audit at the Jakarta headquarters establishes a vital operational precedent for the broader Muhammadiyah network. As one of Indonesia’s largest and most influential socio-religious organizations, Muhammadiyah oversees thousands of educational institutions, healthcare facilities, mosques, and administrative offices nationwide.

Analysts note that scaling the methodologies applied during the Jakarta audit to regional offices, universities, and hospitals could yield macro-level reductions in carbon emissions and energy expenditures nationwide. By institutionalizing energy audits, Muhammadiyah positions itself as a religious and civic leader in Indonesia’s ongoing transition toward sustainable national development and climate resilience.

Ultimately, the findings from the PP Muhammadiyah Jakarta headquarters provide a replicable framework that marries theological principles of environmental stewardship with rigorous empirical data analysis, offering a compelling model for sustainable institutional management across the region.

Bolehkah Warga Mengambil Air Masjid Saat Kemarau?

The recurring challenge of severe drought has placed unprecedented strain on local communities, transforming basic resources like clean water into precious commodities. As wells run dry and municipal water supplies dwindle, the local mosque—often serving as a central pillar of communal life—frequently becomes the last refuge for those in desperate need of hydration and sanitation. This scenario raises a complex intersection of Islamic jurisprudence, social responsibility, and administrative management. The question of whether residents may rightfully claim and transport water from mosque facilities during times of crisis requires a nuanced examination of both religious principles and practical, administrative governance.

The Anatomy of a Climate-Induced Crisis

Environmental data indicates that prolonged dry seasons, exacerbated by climate volatility, have significantly lowered groundwater tables in many regions. According to recent meteorological reports, regions experiencing "extreme drought" often see private and communal wells drop to critical levels, sometimes disappearing entirely within weeks. In such contexts, mosques that have invested in deeper wells, large-scale storage tanks, or consistent clean water distribution networks find themselves at the center of a social dilemma.

Historically, water has been classified as a communal resource in Islamic tradition. A well-known Hadith narrated by Abu Dawud states: "Muslims are partners in three things: pastures, water, and fire." This foundational teaching underscores the status of these elements as essential for the survival of the collective. However, jurists clarify that this does not imply an unrestricted right to private or endowed property. The distinction lies between common, natural water sources and water held within a specific legal framework, such as an endowment (waqf) designated for a particular institution.

The Jurisprudential Perspective on Resource Sharing

The ethical framework surrounding this issue is built upon the concept of social utility. Islamic history provides a rich precedent for the management of water as a public service. The institution of Siqayah, or the provision of water to pilgrims in Makkah, highlights how the management of water was treated as a noble, structural responsibility. Figures such as Al-Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib were tasked with the administration of these water resources, ensuring that the needs of the thirsty were met as a matter of religious and civic duty.

Scholars, including those referenced in Tafsir al-Manar and the works of Imam an-Nawawi, describe the Siqayah not merely as a task, but as a formal system of distribution. This system operated on the principle that while resources might be managed by individuals or specific institutions, their primary purpose is to alleviate human hardship.

In the legal text Fathul Mu’in, the scholar Sheikh Zainuddin al-Malibari addresses the ambiguity surrounding water storage in mosques. He posits that if there is a qarinah (a clear indication or context) that water is provided for general public use, then its consumption for drinking, washing, and sanitation is permissible. The presence of such an indication is often evidenced by custom—if the community has historically utilized the water without objection from the mosque authorities or legal scholars, the practice gains a degree of legitimacy.

Chronology and Lessons from History: The Year of Ashes

The significance of communal support during water scarcity is perhaps best illustrated by the ‘Am ar-Ramadah (Year of Ashes) during the caliphate of Umar bin al-Khattab around 18 Hijriah. This period was characterized by severe drought and famine so extreme that the landscape appeared charred, resembling ash. Historical accounts from Izzuddin Ibnu Atsir in Al-Kamil fi at-Tarikh describe a crisis of existential proportions, where even wildlife sought proximity to humans in a desperate bid for survival.

While this historical event does not explicitly provide a template for drawing water from modern mosque taps, it defines the leadership philosophy required during a crisis. Umar bin al-Khattab’s approach was defined by profound empathy and the understanding that a leader’s duty is to ensure the survival of the governed. His famous sentiment—asking how he could be indifferent to the suffering of his people when it did not afflict him—remains a guiding principle for community leaders today. It suggests that during catastrophic events, rigid adherence to administrative rules should be tempered by the overarching mandate to preserve human life and dignity.

Administrative Implications and Management Strategies

The challenge for modern mosque management boards (Takmir) is to balance the waqf (endowment) status of their water facilities with the urgent needs of the surrounding neighborhood. From an administrative standpoint, a mosque is not merely a place of worship but a social hub. When a disaster occurs, the mosque’s role as a provider of welfare is activated.

However, unchecked access to mosque water without regulation can lead to technical and financial collapse. Many mosques operate on limited budgets, and the cost of electricity for water pumps or the maintenance of filtration systems is significant. If an entire community suddenly relies on a mosque’s well, the equipment may fail, leaving the mosque unable to host congregational prayers or provide necessary hygiene facilities for worshippers.

To mitigate this, mosque boards are encouraged to adopt a "Managed Distribution Policy." This includes:

  1. Defining Usage Hours: Establishing specific times for the public to access water to ensure it does not interfere with prayer times or deplete the tank during peak usage.
  2. Quota Implementation: Setting reasonable daily limits per household to ensure equitable distribution among all neighbors.
  3. Transparent Communication: Engaging with the community to explain the limits of the mosque’s capacity, thereby managing expectations and preventing conflict.
  4. Cooperation with Local Authorities: If the drought is widespread, mosques should act as distribution nodes in coordination with municipal water services, rather than acting as isolated, overwhelmed providers.

Socio-Economic Analysis of Water Dependency

The reliance of residents on mosques for water is a symptom of broader infrastructure failures. In areas where public water utilities are either non-existent or incapacitated by drought, the mosque inadvertently becomes a "shadow utility." This creates a long-term implication: while it is commendable for mosques to help, such dependence is not a sustainable solution for a community.

Sociologists note that when religious institutions become the primary provider of basic human needs, the state’s obligation to provide infrastructure is often obscured. Therefore, mosques should use their position to advocate for better water management and infrastructure investment from local governments. By acting as a mediator between the community and the state, the mosque fulfills its role as a representative of the people’s interests.

Conclusion: Finding the Middle Path

The intersection of religious law and practical necessity dictates that the answer to whether citizens can take water from a mosque is not a simple "yes" or "no." It is a "yes, provided it is managed with responsibility and transparency."

The religious texts prioritize the preservation of life and emphasize that water is a shared blessing. Yet, this must be balanced with the fiduciary duty of the mosque management to protect the assets entrusted to them by the community. When a mosque, in consultation with the community, establishes a system that allows for the sharing of water during a crisis, they are not only providing a liquid resource; they are fulfilling the spiritual mandate of service.

In times of extreme environmental stress, the mosque serves as the heart of the community. By ensuring that the water flows to those who need it most, while maintaining the order and sustainability of the facility, the mosque upholds both the letter of the law and the spirit of humanitarian aid. This balanced approach ensures that the fundamental Islamic value of rahmah (compassion) is realized through the practical administration of the mosque’s resources. As communities continue to face the uncertainties of a changing climate, these institutions will remain vital, not just as houses of prayer, but as essential lifelines in the collective struggle for survival.
