President Prabowo Subianto Admits Dislike for Reading Prepared Speeches During PAN 28th Anniversary Celebration

by Basiran
written by Basiran

President Prabowo Subianto has candidly expressed his personal aversion to relying on pre-drafted scripts during public addresses, noting that professional advisors frequently urge him to adhere strictly to prepared texts. The remarks were made during his keynote address at the grand celebration marking the 28th anniversary of the National Mandate Party (PAN), held at the Jakarta International Convention Center (JICC) in Senayan, Jakarta.

Addressing a packed auditorium of party loyalists, lawmakers, and political figures, the Indonesian head of state shared a lighthearted yet revealing glimpse into the tension between his natural speaking style and the counsel of his communications team. The revelation underscores a distinctive characteristic of Prabowo’s political persona: a preference for spontaneous, conversational rhetoric over tightly managed institutional messaging.

The setting for this disclosure was an event of high political significance. The anniversary celebration served not only as a milestone for one of Indonesia’s prominent political parties within the ruling coalition but also as a platform for alignment among key stakeholders of the national government. Yet, rather than delivering a heavily vetted, policy-dense speech typical of state functions, Prabowo chose to pivot toward a more personal and unrehearsed dialogue with the audience.

The Tension Between Spontaneity and Protocol

During his speech, Prabowo acknowledged that his tendency to deviate from prepared talking points often creates anxiety among his aides, political consultants, and communication strategists. He revealed that experts consistently advise him to stick to the script to mitigate political risks and maintain message discipline.

"Saudara sekalian, berkali-kali di manapun saya sampaikan beberapa hal, mungkin yang sudah dengar pidato-pidato saya mungkin bosan. Tapi tidak apalah. Toh saudara sudah undang saya ke sini. Benar? Salah panitia undang saya," Prabowo remarked, reflecting on his recurring themes and playfully shifting accountability to the event organizers for inviting an unpredictable speaker.

Translating to his broader communicative philosophy, the President elaborated on the core friction point with his advisors. "I am always told by advisors, political experts, and communication experts, ‘Mr. Prabowo, do not speak without a text. You must use a text.’ But what can I do? I prefer to speak naturally and as I am."

This stylistic preference has long defined Prabowo’s public engagements. Throughout his decades-long career in public service—spanning his military tenure, opposition leadership, and eventual ascension to the presidency—observers have noted his transition from formal military briefings to passionate, populist oratorical displays. While text-dependent speeches are standard protocol for heads of state to ensure precise diplomatic phrasing and policy accuracy, Prabowo’s inclination toward off-the-cuff remarks has frequently energized crowds while occasionally keeping his communications team on edge.

Background Context of the Event and PAN Anniversary

The 28th-anniversary celebration of the National Mandate Party (PAN) was a major fixture on the Indonesian political calendar. Founded in the wake of the 1998 Reformasi movement by prominent figure Amien Rais and a coalition of intellectuals and activists, PAN has evolved into a stable anchor within successive government coalitions.

The presence of President Prabowo at the milestone event highlighted the solid strategic partnership between the executive branch and PAN leadership, notably party chairman Zulkifli Hasan. For PAN, hosting the sitting president at their anniversary underscores their integral role in the current administration and provides a platform to reinforce party solidarity ahead of future legislative cycles.

In the lead-up to the event, party organizers had anticipated a high-profile address outlining national achievements and future policy directions. Prabowo did touch upon key themes of national unity, economic resilience, and governance; however, his detour into the mechanics of his speechwriting process captured the most attention, humanizing the presidency and resonating with an audience accustomed to highly sanitized political discourse.

The Role of Speechwriting in Modern Indonesian Politics

In contemporary governance, presidential speeches are rarely left to chance. They are the culmination of hours of inter-agency coordination, policy review, and strategic framing. Ministries ranging from the State Secretariat to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs contribute data points, legal caveats, and programmatic updates to ensure that every public utterance by the head of state aligns with official state policy.

For a leader like Prabowo Subianto, balancing the rigorous demands of institutional communication with a personal desire for authenticity presents a continuous operational challenge. Communications scholars and political analysts note that while scripted speeches minimize the risk of diplomatic missteps or market-moving policy blunders, unscripted dialogues often foster a deeper emotional connection with the electorate.

When a president speaks off the cuff, audiences frequently perceive the message as more genuine and less filtered by political public relations. However, this approach carries inherent vulnerabilities. Unscripted remarks can occasionally be misinterpreted by financial markets, foreign governments, or domestic political opposition, forcing cabinet ministers and presidential spokespersons into retroactive clarification roles.

Fact-Based Analysis of Implications

Prabowo’s public admission at the PAN anniversary carries several distinct implications for his administration’s communication strategy and political positioning:

  1. Reinforcement of Populist Appeal: By openly admitting his dislike for teleprompters and prepared texts, Prabowo reinforces his image as a straightforward, unpretentious leader who values direct engagement over bureaucratic formality. This style resonates strongly with grassroots supporters who favor perceived authenticity over polished political theater.
  2. Challenges for Communications Staff: The President’s preference creates a high-stress environment for his media and policy advisors. Ensuring that national policy positions remain consistent while accommodating an unscripted executive style requires agile crisis communication and rapid response protocols from the Presidential Communications Office.
  3. Media Dynamics: Indonesian media outlets frequently capitalize on unscripted presidential remarks, extracting memorable soundbites that dominate news cycles. While this maintains high visibility for the administration, it shifts journalistic focus away from dense policy debates toward the stylistic nuances of the President’s delivery.
  4. Coalition Relations: Delivering such candid remarks in front of a key coalition partner like PAN signals a high degree of comfort and political security. It demonstrates that the President feels secure enough among political allies to drop formal diplomatic guard rails and share internal operational frustrations lightheartedly.

Chronology of Related Events

To understand the trajectory of Prabowo’s public speaking style, it is helpful to examine key milestones in his communications approach since taking office:

  • October 2024: Following his inauguration, Prabowo’s early cabinet addresses emphasize discipline, nationalism, and anti-corruption measures, blending formal policy reading with impassioned impromptu exhortations to his ministers.
  • Late 2024 to 2025: Throughout various regional visits and economic summits, observers note a recurring pattern where the President sets aside prepared remarks to directly address local grievances or share personal anecdotes with citizens.
  • September 2026: During the 28th anniversary of PAN at JICC Senayan, Prabowo explicitly articulates his frustration with advisors who mandate speech texts, marking one of his most direct public acknowledgments of the internal debate surrounding his oratorical style.

Official Responses and Broader Reactions

While immediate opposition figures have occasionally scrutinized the ambiguity of unscripted executive statements, allies within the ruling coalition view Prabowo’s conversational approach as a sign of strong leadership confidence. Representatives from PAN lauded the President’s visit and his engaging address, emphasizing that the party remains fully aligned with his broader vision for national development.

Communication experts suggest that the administration may adopt a hybrid model moving forward: utilizing strict scripts for high-stakes international summits and formal state legislation, while permitting a more relaxed, conversational format during domestic party gatherings and grassroots engagements. This approach allows the President to maintain necessary diplomatic precision while preserving the personal touch that connects him with his voter base.

As the Prabowo administration continues to navigate domestic economic priorities and international partnerships, the tension between prepared policy texts and spontaneous rhetoric will likely remain a defining characteristic of his presidency—a testament to a leader who continuously seeks to bridge the gap between institutional protocol and personal authenticity.

Comprehensive Guide to Identifying Female Betta Fish Characteristics and Sexing Techniques

by Nana Muazin
written by Nana Muazin

The process of distinguishing between male and female Betta splendens, commonly known as Siamese fighting fish, remains one of the most persistent challenges for both novice hobbyists and professional breeders. While casual observers often assume that color intensity and fin length serve as definitive gender markers, ichthyologists and experienced aquarists emphasize that these visual traits are highly variable and frequently misleading. Accurate sexing requires a multi-faceted approach, relying on the convergence of anatomical, behavioral, and physiological indicators rather than a single morphological trait.

The Evolutionary Context of Betta Dimorphism

The genus Betta has undergone significant selective breeding over the past century, primarily in Southeast Asia, where the fish were originally cultivated for their territorial displays. This history of artificial selection has resulted in a wide array of phenotypes, particularly concerning fin morphology and coloration. Consequently, modern domesticated Bettas often blur the lines of sexual dimorphism that are strictly observed in their wild-type ancestors.

In the wild, male Bettas exhibit a clear advantage in fin size and intensity to attract mates and intimidate rivals. However, in captivity, the proliferation of "Plakat" strains—a type of short-finned male—has rendered the "long fin vs. short fin" rule of thumb largely obsolete. Understanding the nuanced anatomy of the female specimen is therefore critical for effective population management, breeding programs, and the maintenance of aquatic community harmony.

Anatomical Markers: The Primary Indicators

The most reliable anatomical feature for identifying a female Betta is the presence of the ovipositor, colloquially referred to as the "egg spot." This structure is located on the ventral side of the fish, situated between the pelvic fins and the anal fin. In a mature, healthy female, this appears as a small, distinct white or cream-colored papilla.

However, reliance on the egg spot alone is discouraged by industry experts. Juvenile females often lack a clearly defined ovipositor, and stress can cause the organ to retract or become less visible. Furthermore, some male specimens may exhibit small, light-colored protrusions that can be mistaken for an egg spot. To minimize error, observers should corroborate this finding with at least two other physical characteristics, such as body shape and gill membrane development.

The Role of Body Morphology and Fin Structure

Beyond the ovipositor, the overall body shape provides significant clues. Females typically possess a more rounded, robust midsection compared to the streamlined, elongated bodies of males. When a female is in peak reproductive condition, her abdomen often appears slightly distended due to the development of oocytes. While this is a helpful indicator, it must be balanced against the fish’s nutritional status; an overfed male may also appear round, potentially leading to misidentification.

Regarding fin morphology, the female’s fins—specifically the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins—are generally shorter and more compact. While males of the long-finned variety (such as Halfmoon or Veil Tail) display dramatic, flowing appendages, females maintain a more modest profile. In the case of short-finned varieties, the rounded edges of the female’s fins often contrast with the slightly more angular or pointed fin tips observed in males.

Sensory and Physiological Cues: The Beard and Stress Bars

The operculum, or gill cover, hides a vital sexing tool: the branchiostegal membrane, or "beard." When a Betta flares—an act of aggression or intimidation—this membrane expands. In males, the beard is significantly larger and more prominent, often protruding well beyond the gill cover. In females, the beard is present but much smaller, typically remaining hidden when the fish is at rest.

Another physiological indicator occurs specifically in females during the breeding cycle: the emergence of "breeding bars." These are vertical, alternating light and dark stripes that appear along the flanks of a female ready to spawn. It is imperative to distinguish these from "stress stripes," which manifest as horizontal lines and can appear on either gender during periods of environmental instability or illness. Recognizing this distinction is essential for keepers to avoid confusing a healthy, receptive female with one that is suffering from poor water quality.

Comparative Data: Sexing Metrics for Hobbyists

Data compiled by the Betta Fish enthusiasts’ network suggests that a "weighted approach" to sexing yields a 95% accuracy rate. By assigning values to various traits, keepers can reach a more scientific conclusion:

Feature Male Characteristic Female Characteristic
Egg Spot Absent Present (White/Cream)
Ventral Fins Long, thick Short, thin
Body Shape Streamlined/Slender Round/Deep
Beard Size Large, prominent Small, discrete
Behavior Highly territorial Moderately territorial

While these metrics provide a foundation, the impact of environmental factors cannot be overstated. A fish’s environment—specifically the volume of the tank, water temperature, and protein content of its diet—directly influences growth rates and the prominence of secondary sexual characteristics.

Broader Implications for Aquarium Management

The misidentification of Betta genders carries significant implications for the sustainability and safety of aquatic environments. Placing two males together invariably leads to violent, often fatal, territorial disputes. Conversely, the "sorority" tank—a group of female Bettas—requires precise management. If a male is mistakenly introduced into a female-only group, the social structure will collapse, resulting in aggression and stress.

Furthermore, the misunderstanding of female aggression is a common pitfall. Many keepers operate under the false assumption that females are docile. In reality, female Bettas are highly territorial and establish complex social hierarchies. Failure to acknowledge this can lead to fin nipping, secondary infections from combat wounds, and the suppression of the immune system due to chronic stress.

Scientific and Ethical Considerations

From a research perspective, the ability to accurately sex fish at a young age is vital for genetic studies and selective breeding. Breeders must ensure that the selection of broodstock is based on verified gender to avoid unwanted cross-breeding or the accidental propagation of undesirable traits. Ethically, providing an appropriate environment is a fundamental responsibility of the aquarist; this begins with understanding the specific social requirements of the fish in one’s care.

In professional breeding facilities, the use of ultrasound or microscopic examination of the gonads is sometimes employed for high-value specimens, though this is impractical for the average hobbyist. For the general public, the combination of visual observation, behavioral monitoring, and a basic understanding of anatomy remains the gold standard.

Conclusion: A Holistic Approach to Identification

In summary, determining the sex of a Betta fish is not a task that should be rushed. Observers must take the time to observe the fish in a stress-free environment, allowing the animal to settle into its surroundings before making a final determination. By focusing on the convergence of the ovipositor, body shape, and gill structure—while remaining skeptical of color and fin length—keepers can ensure they provide the correct care and social environment for their aquatic charges. As the hobby of fish-keeping continues to grow, the emphasis on education and species-specific knowledge remains the most effective tool for promoting the health and longevity of the Siamese fighting fish.

Profil Dewi Gita tetiba terseret dugaan perselingkuhan Andre Taulany dirumorkan sebagai sosok Degoy

by Lina Irawan
written by Lina Irawan

The Indonesian entertainment industry has recently been set abuzz by a wave of digital speculation involving veteran singer Dewi Gita and comedian Andre Taulany. The controversy stems from viral screenshots of a WhatsApp conversation circulating on social media, which purportedly implicate a figure identified only by the moniker "Degoy." Amidst the unsubstantiated claims, netizens have begun associating this nickname with the wife of Gigi vocalist Armand Maulana. While there has been no official confirmation or evidence linking Dewi Gita to these allegations, the incident has prompted a broader public conversation regarding the privacy of public figures and the volatility of social media discourse.

The Genesis of the Speculation

The rumors began to gain traction when anonymous social media accounts shared fragments of a digital conversation that hinted at an extramarital affair involving Andre Taulany. In the digital age, where screenshots are often treated as definitive proof by online audiences, the term "Degoy" became a central focal point for internet sleuths. Because "Degoy" phonetically resembles a nickname that could be attributed to Dewi Gita, the singer was quickly dragged into the narrative without any verified evidence connecting her to the source material.

It is essential to note that the accounts responsible for disseminating these screenshots did not explicitly name Dewi Gita. The connection remains purely speculative, driven by the tendency of digital communities to map public figures onto ambiguous information. As of this date, both the Taulany and Maulana camps have remained largely silent on the specific allegations, a common strategy in crisis management for high-profile celebrities who seek to avoid legitimizing baseless online chatter.

Contextualizing the Public Figure: Who is Dewi Gita?

To understand the weight of these rumors, one must look at the long and storied career of Dewi Gita. Born Dewi Yuliarti on July 28, 1970, in Bandung, West Java, she is far more than a name in a headline. Her trajectory in the Indonesian arts scene began not in the recording studio, but on the stage as a professional dancer. This background in movement and performance discipline likely contributed to her stage presence, which would eventually define her musical career.

Dewi Gita’s transition into the music industry was marked by a series of high-profile achievements that cemented her status as a legitimate vocal talent. Her competitive spirit was evident as early as the late 1980s. She secured the title of Festival Pop Singer Jawa Barat and Juara Keroncong Jawa Barat in 1988, followed by the Bintang Radio dan Televisi Jawa Barat award in 1989. By 1992, her reach had expanded to the international stage when she earned second place as the Grand Champion in the prestigious Asia Bagus competition, a platform that launched the careers of many Southeast Asian stars.

Her professional recording debut came in 1990 with the single "Jujur," which was followed by a string of studio albums throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, including "Penari" (1995), "Apa Jadinya" (1996), "Padamu" (1999), and "Kegaiban Biru" (2000). Her partnership with Armand Maulana, whom she married on January 11, 1994, has often been cited as one of the most stable and enduring relationships in the Indonesian entertainment industry, characterized by their shared dedication to music and their daughter, Naja Dewi Maulana.

The Impact of Digital Misinformation

The current situation involving Dewi Gita highlights a recurring issue in modern journalism and social media: the speed at which misinformation can damage reputations. In an era where "cancel culture" and public shaming often precede investigation, public figures are increasingly vulnerable to "guilt by association."

The implication of an artist as established as Dewi Gita in a scandal involving another major television personality like Andre Taulany serves as a case study for the risks of social media rumor-mongering. When fans attempt to connect dots that do not exist, they risk devaluing decades of professional achievement. Dewi Gita’s career, spanning over 30 years, is built on a foundation of artistic integrity and public service to the arts. Linking her to a transient, unverified internet rumor creates a disproportionate narrative that ignores the complexity of her personal and professional life.

Professional Analysis of the Crisis

Media experts suggest that the lack of concrete evidence in the "Degoy" rumor is why neither party has issued a formal denial. In the field of public relations, responding to speculative, anonymous allegations often serves only to amplify the reach of the rumor. By remaining silent, the involved parties maintain control over the narrative, preventing the escalation of the incident into a full-blown public scandal that would require legal intervention.

Furthermore, the Indonesian public’s reaction to these rumors is reflective of a broader cultural fascination with the private lives of celebrities. In the current digital landscape, the distinction between a private citizen and a public figure has blurred, leading to an expectation that the personal lives of stars are "public property." This sentiment is often weaponized by social media accounts seeking engagement through clickbait and sensationalist content.

The Broader Implications for the Industry

This incident serves as a reminder of the need for media literacy in the digital age. As users navigate platforms like TikTok, X (formerly Twitter), and Instagram, the ability to discern between verified reporting and social media gossip becomes paramount. The Indonesian entertainment sector, which has seen its fair share of high-profile divorces and scandals, is currently in a state of hyper-vigilance. Any interaction, no matter how benign, between celebrities is now subject to intense, and often invasive, scrutiny.

For Dewi Gita, who has intentionally kept a lower profile in recent years to focus on family and selective projects, this unwanted attention is an example of the collateral damage caused by the modern "scandal cycle." While she has transitioned through different phases of her career—from the pop star of the 90s to a mentor and media personality—her legacy is firmly rooted in her musical contributions rather than the sensationalist headlines that currently threaten to overshadow them.

Looking Forward: A Legacy Beyond the Gossip

As the noise surrounding the "Degoy" rumors eventually subsides, it is likely that the public discourse will return to the substantive contributions of the artists involved. Dewi Gita’s journey from a young dancer in Bandung to a national icon is the true narrative arc of her life. Her dedication to her craft, her consistent presence in the music scene, and her role as a mother and wife remain the tangible aspects of her public identity.

The lesson for the audience is clear: the information landscape is fraught with potential for distortion. Until there is verified, credible evidence, allegations regarding the personal conduct of public figures should be treated with extreme skepticism. In the case of Dewi Gita, the lack of substantiation is the most telling detail of all. Her career, which has survived the test of time, is unlikely to be dismantled by the ephemeral nature of social media speculation.

In summary, the events of mid-September 2026 serve as a cautionary tale about the intersection of digital privacy and public curiosity. While the industry continues to evolve, the necessity for integrity in reporting and responsible engagement from the audience remains a constant. For now, the story of Dewi Gita remains one of musical excellence and professional resilience, largely untouched by the unverified whispers of the internet. The focus for her fans and the general public should remain on the music and the legacy she has built over more than three decades, rather than the fleeting shadows of online conjecture.

President Prabowo Subianto Warns That Democracy Can Be Hijacked and Purchased by Economic Elites

by Lina Hope
written by Lina Hope

JAKARTA — Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto issued a stern warning regarding the vulnerability of the nation’s political system, cautioning that democracy can be hijacked and systematically bought by powerful economic actors wielding illicit wealth. The statement was delivered during the commemoration of the 28th anniversary of the National Mandate Party (PAN) held at the Jakarta International Convention Center (JICC) in Senayan, Jakarta.

Addressing thousands of party cadres, lawmakers, and invited dignitaries, the head of state emphasized that while Indonesia has made remarkable strides in establishing a democratic society since the onset of the Reformasi era in 1998, systemic threats persist. He highlighted how vast financial resources, particularly capital acquired through questionable or illegal means, pose a direct peril to the integrity of democratic governance, state institutions, and the rule of law.

The speech immediately drew significant public attention, sparking widespread discussions among political analysts, civil society organizations, and ordinary citizens regarding the intersection of money politics, governance reform, and the future of Indonesian democracy.

The Context of the PAN Anniversary Celebration

The 28th anniversary of the National Mandate Party served as a major political gathering, bringing together coalition partners, high-ranking government officials, and key figures from across the national political spectrum. PAN, which has been a steadfast political ally of Prabowo’s administration, provided a platform for the President to address broader national concerns.

In his opening remarks, Prabowo reflected on the long journey of political partnership and mutual loyalty among coalition members, describing the gathering as a reunion of reliable comrades-in-arms. However, the tone quickly shifted from celebratory to cautionary as the President pivoted toward the perils facing contemporary governance.

"Brothers and sisters, we must be careful because democracy can be hijacked. Democracy can be bought by those with immense economic power, those with abundant money, and especially those whose money is obtained through unlawful means," Prabowo stated during his keynote address.

The President elaborated on the mechanics of this perceived threat, warning that corrupt economic elites harbor ambitions to subvert state institutions for private gain. He outlined an alarming scenario in which money is deployed to corrupt the foundational pillars of the republic.

"They want to hijack our democracy. They want to bribe our political figures. They want to buy them—bribe judges, bribe prosecutors, bribe generals, bribe ministers, they even want to bribe the President!" he added emphatically.

The Modern Threat Landscape: Algorithms, Social Media, and Digital Manipulation

Beyond traditional forms of political corruption such as vote-buying and illicit campaign financing, President Prabowo drew attention to contemporary challenges posed by the digital age. He warned that the battleground for democracy has expanded into cyberspace, where advanced technologies are frequently weaponized to deceive the electorate.

Prabowo specifically highlighted the deployment of algorithms, paid social media influencers, automated bot networks, and organized buzzer teams. According to the President, these digital tools are utilized to spread misinformation, polarize public opinion, and manipulate social discourse, ultimately undermining the psychological resilience of the public.

This aspect of the speech resonates with growing global concerns regarding information warfare and the erosion of digital trust. In recent years, political observers have noted an increasing reliance on algorithmic manipulation during election cycles in various democracies worldwide, raising questions about how nations can safeguard digital sovereignty without compromising freedom of speech.

Chronology of Money Politics and Institutional Reform in Indonesia

To fully understand the weight of President Prabowo’s warnings, it is necessary to examine the historical trajectory of money politics and anti-corruption efforts in post-Authoritarian Indonesia.

Since the fall of President Suharto in 1998, Indonesia transitioned from a centralized, authoritarian regime to one of the largest decentralized democracies in the world. The transition introduced direct elections for local executive positions, legislative seats, and the presidency. However, decentralization also decentralized corruption, giving rise to local political dynasties and the heavy monetization of political campaigns.

  • Early 2000s: The establishment of foundational democratic institutions, including the Constitutional Court (MK) and the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), aimed to curb systemic abuse of power.
  • 2010s: Legislative and presidential campaigns saw a steady escalation in campaign expenditures, prompting the General Elections Commission (KPU) and the Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) to tighten regulations on campaign finance transparency.
  • 2020–Present: Despite stringent reporting requirements, watchdog organizations continue to report pervasive vote-buying practices, commonly referred to locally as serangan fajar (dawn attacks), during regional and national elections. Furthermore, high-profile corruption scandals involving senior members of the judiciary, law enforcement, and parliament have periodically shaken public confidence in state institutions.

Broader Implications for Governance and the Rule of Law

Political analysts and governance experts suggest that Prabowo’s remarks reflect an acute awareness of the challenges facing his administration as it attempts to consolidate power while simultaneously pursuing an aggressive anti-corruption agenda.

The warning that even high-ranking officials—ranging from judges and prosecutors to military generals and cabinet ministers—could be targeted by corrupt financial interests underscores the deep-rooted nature of systemic graft. Observers note that systemic corruption not only distorts economic development by favoring monopolistic practices over free-market competition, but it also hollows out the institutional checks and balances necessary for a functioning democracy.

By publicly acknowledging these vulnerabilities, the President places immense pressure on law enforcement agencies, including the KPK, the National Police, and the Attorney General’s Office, to demonstrate tangible results in prosecuting financial crimes and high-level corruption.

Reactions from Political Parties and Civil Society

Responses to the President’s address have poured in from various political factions and civil society organizations.

Representatives from PAN expressed strong support for the President’s stance, emphasizing that the party remains committed to clean governance and strengthening democratic institutions from within. Party insiders noted that safeguarding democracy from the corrosive influence of illicit capital is a shared responsibility that transcends partisan lines.

Meanwhile, civil society groups focused on anti-corruption and electoral integrity, such as Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) and the Association for Elections and Democracy (Perludem), welcomed the rhetorical commitment to fighting elite capture of the state. However, these organizations stressed that rhetoric must be matched by concrete policy reforms.

Key recommendations often put forward by civil society include:

  1. Stricter Campaign Finance Audits: Enhancing the transparency of political party funding and enforcing real-time tracking of campaign donations.
  2. Asset Recovery Legislation: Accelerating the passage and implementation of asset forfeiture laws to target the ill-gotten gains of corrupt individuals.
  3. Judicial Independence: Strengthening ethical oversight within the judiciary and law enforcement agencies to prevent external financial interference in legal proceedings.
  4. Digital Literacy and Regulation: Developing robust frameworks to address algorithmic manipulation and coordinated inauthentic behavior on social media platforms without curtailing legitimate political expression.

Conclusion and Future Outlook

President Prabowo Subianto’s address at the PAN anniversary serves as a stark reminder of the fragile nature of democratic systems when confronted by unbridled economic power and illicit capital. As Indonesia navigates its complex political and economic landscape, the challenge ahead lies in translating these high-level warnings into structural reforms that can effectively immunize state institutions against the corrupting influence of money.

The coming months will likely test the administration’s resolve as it balances coalition politics with the imperative of institutional purification, setting the tone for the remainder of the presidential term and the long-term health of Indonesian democracy.

Lady Gaga and Michael Polansky Welcome Daughter Rose Bean Polansky via Surrogate

by Layla Zulfa
written by Layla Zulfa

The global entertainment landscape shifted on September 18, 2026, as news broke confirming that international pop icon Lady Gaga and her fiancé, entrepreneur Michael Polansky, have officially welcomed their first child. The newborn, a daughter named Rose Bean Polansky, was born on June 9, 2026, at 11:19 p.m. at the prestigious Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. The arrival of the child, facilitated through a surrogate, marks a monumental personal milestone for the artist, who has navigated a complex and public journey toward motherhood amidst significant physical and emotional challenges.

The announcement, initially reported by Page Six and corroborated by various industry sources, marks the culmination of a long-standing desire expressed by the performer. While the couple has maintained a relatively private life regarding the specific details of the surrogacy arrangement, the revelation of the baby’s name has provided fans and media with a poignant glimpse into the inspirations behind their family life.

The Significance of the Name: A Tribute to Art and Activism

The name Rose Bean Polansky carries deep personal significance, tethering the child to both the professional legacy of the artist and the social causes she has championed throughout her career. According to sources close to the couple, the name "Rose" serves as a direct homage to the classic song "La Vie en Rose." Lady Gaga’s connection to the song is well-documented; she famously performed a breathtaking rendition of the track in the 2018 blockbuster film A Star Is Born, which served as a pivotal moment in her transition from pop star to critical acting acclaim.

The symbolism extends beyond the soundtrack of her career. Lady Gaga bears a prominent, large-scale tattoo on her spine depicting a rose, accompanied by the script "la vie en rose." This aesthetic commitment underscores the song’s role as a touchstone in her personal identity.

The middle name, "Bean," is a tribute to the late activist Carl Bean. Bean was a foundational figure in the LGBTQ+ rights movement and a pioneer for inclusivity. His life and work were the primary inspiration for Lady Gaga’s 2011 anthem "Born This Way," a song that has become an international standard for self-acceptance and empowerment. By naming her daughter Rose Bean, the couple has woven together the threads of the mother’s creative history and her dedication to humanitarian advocacy.

A Chronology of the Path to Motherhood

The journey to this moment has been characterized by profound resilience. Since 2024, public reports and statements from those within the artist’s inner circle have highlighted the "peaks and valleys" of her pursuit of parenthood. This period was marked by a synthesis of intense professional commitments and significant physiological hurdles.

Lady Gaga’s history with chronic pain has been a central narrative of her health journey for over a decade. In 2013, she famously underwent emergency surgery for a severe labral tear in her right hip, a condition that necessitated the cancellation of her Born This Way Ball tour. At the time, her medical team issued a stark warning: continued performance without intervention would result in total hip replacement surgery, potentially sidelining her career for a year or more.

These long-term physical vulnerabilities persisted, complicated by the demanding nature of international touring and stage performance. Sources indicated that the physical toll of her career, compounded by the emotional weight of her desire for a family, created a narrative of endurance. The transition into motherhood was not merely a life choice but a calculated navigation of her physical limitations.

In October 2025, during a high-profile appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the artist provided the most explicit indication of her future priorities. When asked about her aspirations, she stated clearly, "What I really want is to be a mother. I hope that’s my next big role." This public declaration effectively signaled to her global fanbase that a shift in focus was imminent.

The Medical and Ethical Context of Surrogacy

The decision to utilize a surrogate is one increasingly common among high-profile individuals facing health constraints that make pregnancy physically prohibitive. While the specific medical reasons for the couple’s choice remain private, the medical community notes that for individuals with chronic musculoskeletal conditions—such as the hip and joint issues experienced by Gaga—pregnancy can pose significant risks to long-term mobility.

By opting for a surrogate at Cedars-Sinai, a facility renowned for its high-risk maternity care and advanced reproductive technology, the couple ensured a controlled and professional environment for the birth. The process, while common in celebrity circles, often requires meticulous legal and medical coordination, highlighting the couple’s commitment to providing a stable start for their daughter.

Public Reactions and Industry Impact

The announcement has triggered a wave of well-wishes from across the entertainment industry. While the couple has historically kept their relationship with Michael Polansky—a prominent tech entrepreneur—understated, the birth of Rose Bean has brought them into the spotlight in a new capacity: as parents.

As of September 11, 2026, the first public sighting of the family occurred in Northern California. Eyewitnesses reported seeing Lady Gaga and Polansky out with their newborn, marking the first time the public has caught a glimpse of the family dynamic. The images, which circulated widely, displayed a moment of relative normalcy, contrasting with the intense media scrutiny typically surrounding the Grammy and Academy Award-winning artist.

Industry analysts suggest that this development will likely influence the trajectory of Lady Gaga’s upcoming professional projects. In the music and film industries, a transition into motherhood for a performer of her magnitude often leads to a recalibration of creative output. Given her history of channeling personal experience into her songwriting, observers speculate that her next creative chapter—whether in music or film—may be deeply influenced by the themes of transformation, legacy, and the profound changes brought about by parenthood.

Broader Implications: A Shift in Creative Focus

The news also serves as a case study in the evolving public perception of celebrity health and family planning. By being transparent about the "despair" and "hardship" involved in her journey, Lady Gaga has humanized a process that is often obscured by the veneer of celebrity perfection. Her admission that she faced both physical and emotional trials resonates with many who struggle with similar issues, bridging the gap between an unreachable icon and the everyday reality of the challenges of fertility and motherhood.

As the couple adjusts to their new life with Rose Bean, the global attention remains focused on how they will balance their high-profile careers with the demands of raising a child. While representatives for Lady Gaga have yet to release a detailed statement regarding their future plans, the narrative of the last few years suggests a move toward a more curated, intentional existence.

For now, the arrival of Rose Bean Polansky stands as a testament to the artist’s ability to overcome obstacles. Whether through her recovery from debilitating injuries, her success as an actress, or her evolution as a mother, the trajectory of Lady Gaga’s life continues to align with the themes of her most famous works: resilience, transformation, and the unyielding pursuit of a "born this way" identity. As she steps into this new role, the focus of her massive audience shifts from the stage to the home, marking a significant, if quieter, era in the life of one of the world’s most influential entertainers.

Understanding the Dangers of Influenza A in Children: Prevention and Transmission Dynamics

by Rifan Muazin
written by Rifan Muazin

Influenza A in children represents a significant public health challenge, as the virus is characterized by its high transmissibility, often spreading through households and schools before the infected individual displays any clinical symptoms. Unlike the common cold, which generally manifests with mild respiratory discomfort, Influenza A is a systemic viral infection that can lead to severe complications, particularly in pediatric populations. Understanding the nuances of this virus—from its rapid onset of symptoms to the mechanisms of its spread—is essential for parents, educators, and healthcare providers to mitigate the impact of seasonal outbreaks.

The Clinical Profile of Influenza A in Children

According to pediatric specialists such as Dr. Ardi Santoso, Influenza A is frequently misunderstood as a mere seasonal flu or a minor respiratory ailment. However, the virus acts with a level of virulence that demands close monitoring. The onset of Influenza A is typically sudden, characterized by a rapid escalation of body temperature, often reaching levels of 39°C (102.2°F) or higher.

Beyond high fever, children often report severe malaise, which includes profound fatigue, muscle aches (myalgia), and headaches. The respiratory impact is similarly acute, manifesting as a persistent, deep cough, a sore throat, and nasal congestion or rhinorrhea. In younger children, the clinical presentation may vary; gastrointestinal symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea are not uncommon, often complicating the diagnosis as parents may initially mistake the condition for gastroenteritis. The combination of high fever and systemic weakness often leaves children bedridden, significantly disrupting their daily activities and necessitating immediate medical attention to prevent dehydration and secondary infections.

Transmission Dynamics and the Silent Spread

One of the most concerning aspects of Influenza A is its ability to transmit before the onset of symptomatic illness. The virus is primarily spread through respiratory droplets—tiny particles expelled into the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or even speaks. When these droplets are inhaled by others or settle on surfaces that are subsequently touched, the virus can enter the host’s respiratory tract.

The period of infectivity typically begins approximately 24 hours before the patient develops symptoms and can last for five to seven days in adults, though in children, the shedding of the virus can persist for a longer duration. This "silent transmission" window is the primary driver of household outbreaks. It is not uncommon for a child to attend school while in the early stages of the incubation period, inadvertently exposing classmates and teachers, or to return home and pass the virus to siblings and parents before the child’s own symptoms become apparent. This cycle creates a domino effect, where a single case in a household frequently leads to multiple infections, highlighting the difficulty of containment in high-density environments.

Historical Context and Seasonal Patterns

Influenza A is a virus characterized by its constant evolution. It is categorized into subtypes based on the surface proteins hemagglutinin (H) and neuraminidase (N). Periodic "antigenic drift"—small, gradual changes in the virus—necessitates the annual update of influenza vaccines. Occasionally, "antigenic shift" occurs, where the virus undergoes a major change, potentially leading to pandemic-level outbreaks.

Historically, influenza activity peaks during the colder months, though in tropical climates like Indonesia, the virus circulates throughout the year with intermittent spikes during rainy seasons. The burden on the healthcare system during these peak periods is substantial. Pediatric wards often see increased admissions for influenza-related complications, such as pneumonia, bronchitis, and febrile seizures. Data from global health organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO), suggest that annual influenza epidemics result in an estimated 3 to 5 million cases of severe illness worldwide, with children bearing a disproportionate burden of these hospitalizations.

Preventive Strategies: A Multi-Layered Approach

Given the highly contagious nature of Influenza A, a robust preventive strategy is necessary. The cornerstone of this strategy remains annual vaccination. While the vaccine does not guarantee 100% immunity against infection, it is highly effective at preventing severe disease, hospitalization, and mortality. Medical guidelines suggest that children as young as six months should receive the influenza vaccine, with the dosage and frequency determined by pediatricians based on age and previous vaccination history.

Beyond vaccination, basic hygiene practices remain the most effective non-pharmaceutical interventions:

  1. Hand Hygiene: Frequent handwashing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or the use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers, is essential to kill the virus on the skin surface.
  2. Respiratory Etiquette: Teaching children to cover their mouths and noses with a tissue or their inner elbow when coughing or sneezing significantly reduces the spread of respiratory droplets.
  3. Environmental Cleaning: Influenza viruses can survive on hard surfaces for up to 24 hours. Regular cleaning and disinfection of frequently touched objects—such as doorknobs, light switches, and electronic devices—can break the chain of transmission.
  4. Social Distancing: During peak outbreak periods, avoiding crowded places and maintaining physical distance from individuals displaying respiratory symptoms can lower the risk of exposure.

The Role of Early Intervention

If a child shows symptoms of Influenza A, early medical intervention is crucial. Antiviral medications, such as oseltamivir, can be effective in reducing the duration and severity of the illness if administered within the first 48 hours of symptom onset. Parents are advised to monitor the child’s breathing, hydration levels, and cognitive state closely. Signs such as rapid or labored breathing, inability to keep fluids down, persistent high fever, or unusual lethargy are "red flags" that require immediate emergency care.

The psychological impact of such illnesses on families should not be underestimated. The stress of managing a sick child, combined with the risk of the virus spreading to other family members, necessitates a supportive environment. Employers and schools are encouraged to adopt flexible policies that allow parents to care for sick children without the pressure of attendance or productivity, which in turn helps in curbing the spread of the virus within the community.

Socio-Economic Implications and Future Outlook

The economic implications of Influenza A are significant, ranging from the cost of direct medical expenses and hospitalizations to the indirect costs associated with parental absenteeism from work. In the long term, strengthening public health surveillance systems to track influenza strains and increasing public awareness regarding vaccine accessibility are vital.

Future research is currently focused on the development of a "universal" flu vaccine that could provide broader protection across different strains of the virus, potentially eliminating the need for annual updates. Until such technology becomes widely available, public health officials emphasize that the responsibility lies in consistent, community-wide adherence to established health protocols.

In conclusion, Influenza A remains a formidable adversary in pediatric healthcare. By acknowledging the reality of its rapid transmission and the severity of its symptoms, families can move from a reactive posture to a proactive one. Through a combination of rigorous vaccination schedules, diligent hygiene, and swift clinical response, the impact of this virus can be effectively managed, ensuring the health and safety of children during the most challenging seasons of the year. The cycle of transmission, while daunting, is not unbreakable; it requires constant vigilance and a collective commitment to health standards that prioritize the protection of the most vulnerable members of society.

President Prabowo Subianto Highlights Modern Warfare and Democratic Vulnerabilities at PAN’s 28th Anniversary

by Jia Lissa
written by Jia Lissa

JAKARTA — Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto delivered a comprehensive and cautionary address on modern geopolitical dynamics, information warfare, and the latent threats facing contemporary democratic systems during the grand celebration of the National Mandate Party’s (PAN) 28th anniversary. Speaking before thousands of loyal cadres, political elites, and party supporters at the Jakarta International Convention Center (JICC) in Senayan, Jakarta, on Friday, September 18, 2026, the head of state emphasized that the nature of modern conflict has fundamentally shifted. Rather than relying on traditional troop deployments and kinetic warfare, adversaries can now destabilize nations by weaponizing digital platforms and disseminating disinformation through social media channels.

The high-profile event served not only as a milestone commemoration for one of Indonesia’s prominent political parties but also as a platform for the president to articulate broader concerns regarding national resilience, economic sovereignty, and the protection of democratic institutions from external and internal manipulation.

The Evolution of Warfare in the Digital Age

Addressing the audience inside the sprawling JICC auditorium, President Prabowo turned a portion of his address toward strategic security concepts, drawing attention to how technological advancements have revolutionized conflict. He noted that contemporary warfare no longer necessitates the physical mobilization of military divisions across borders to subjugate a sovereign nation.

"Brothers and sisters, we must realize that warfare today does not always require sending troops," President Prabowo stated during his speech. He specifically highlighted the digital ecosystem as a primary battleground, explaining that national stability can be severely undermined by corrupting social media networks with fabricated narratives, falsehoods, and psychological operations designed to fracture societal cohesion.

This perspective aligns with contemporary security studies regarding hybrid warfare and cognitive domain operations. In an era where populations are hyper-connected via smartphones and digital platforms, the manipulation of public perception has become a potent and cost-effective tool for state and non-state actors alike. By flooding information networks with divisive content, bad actors can manufacture social unrest, erode trust in public institutions, and influence electoral outcomes without firing a single conventional bullet.

Safeguarding Democracy from Economic Coercion

Transitioning from external security threats to domestic governance, Prabowo issued a stark warning regarding the integrity of Indonesia’s democratic processes. He cautioned that democratic systems remain vulnerable to systemic subversion through the infusion of illicit capital and concentrated economic power.

"We must be careful because democracy can be hijacked. Democracy can be bought by those with massive economic power, those with abundant wealth, and especially those whose money is obtained through illicit means," Prabowo emphasized.

The president’s remarks strike at a persistent challenge within emerging democracies: the monetization of politics. The unchecked influence of "dark money"—funds derived from corruption, organized crime, or unverified transnational sources—poses a direct threat to the principle of one-person-one-vote. When financial moguls or illicit syndicates can bankroll political campaigns, sway public opinion through paid digital armies, or purchase policy influence, the foundational tenets of representative governance risk being hollowed out from within.

The caution serves as a timely reminder for regulatory bodies, law enforcement agencies, and civil society organizations in Indonesia to remain vigilant against financial malfeasance, particularly as the nation continues to navigate its complex political landscape following recent electoral cycles.

Background and Context of PAN’s 28th Anniversary

The commemoration of the National Mandate Party’s 28th anniversary was marked by high political symbolism. Founded in the wake of the 1998 Reformation movement—a pivotal juncture that transitioned Indonesia from authoritarian rule to a multiparty democracy—PAN has long positioned itself as a reformist and nationalist-religious party.

The event at the JICC gathered key figures from across the political spectrum, including cabinet ministers, coalition leaders, and regional representatives. President Prabowo’s presence at the anniversary celebration underscored the close strategic alliance between his administration and PAN, a founding member of the current government coalition.

Bicara Perang, Prabowo: Kini Tak Perlu Kirim Pasukan, Rusak dengan Sosmed

Earlier in the proceedings, Prabowo reflected on his enduring political alliances and the loyalty of his political comrades. In a warmly received remark, he expressed gratitude for standing alongside steadfast allies through decades of political contestation, noting, "I am here in the midst of loyal comrades-in-arms." This sentiment reinforced the narrative of solidarity and political stability that the ruling coalition seeks to project amidst global economic uncertainties and domestic policy implementations.

Global and Regional Implications of Information Warfare

President Prabowo’s commentary on social media manipulation arrives at a time when governments worldwide are grappling with the regulatory and security challenges posed by artificial intelligence, deepfakes, and unchecked digital content.

In Southeast Asia, where internet penetration has surged exponentially over the past decade, the rapid dissemination of unverified information has occasionally led to localized tensions, polarization during election cycles, and heightened susceptibility to foreign influence operations. Cybersecurity experts have repeatedly pointed out that social media algorithms, designed to maximize user engagement, often inadvertently amplify sensationalist, polarizing, or false content, making populations fertile ground for cognitive manipulation.

By highlighting this vulnerability, Prabowo’s administration signals a growing policy focus on digital sovereignty and national cybersecurity. Protecting the digital realm is no longer viewed merely as a technical challenge for IT departments, but as a core pillar of national defense. This encompasses strengthening domestic data infrastructure, promoting digital literacy among citizens, and establishing robust regulatory frameworks to counter foreign interference and disinformation campaigns.

Analytical Perspectives on Political Finance and Democratic Resilience

Political analysts and governance watchdogs have weighed in on the implications of Prabowo’s warnings regarding the commercialization of democracy. Academic observers note that while Indonesia has made remarkable strides in conducting peaceful, transparent elections since the turn of the century, the high cost of campaigning remains a structural vulnerability.

When candidates must secure vast sums of capital to fund media campaigns, logistics, and voter outreach, the temptation to rely on donors with questionable backgrounds or vested interests increases significantly. This dynamic can lead to regulatory capture, where elected officials feel obligated to serve the narrow economic interests of their financial backers rather than the broader public welfare.

Prabowo’s public acknowledgment of these risks at a major partisan gathering is viewed by some analysts as an attempt to establish a normative baseline against illicit political funding. However, civil society organizations emphasize that rhetoric must be matched by rigorous enforcement of campaign finance laws, enhanced transparency in political donations, and stringent auditing by election oversight bodies such as the General Elections Commission (KPU) and the Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu).

The Intersection of National Defense and Public Literacy

As traditional notions of defense expand to encompass non-kinetic domains—including economic security, food and energy independence, and cyber defense—Indonesia’s national security strategy is undergoing a quiet evolution.

Prabowo’s remarks suggest that national resilience in the 21st century relies as heavily on the critical thinking and media literacy of the general population as it does on conventional military readiness. When citizens are equipped to critically evaluate information encountered online, the efficacy of hostile disinformation campaigns diminishes. Conversely, an uninformed or hyper-polarized populace becomes an unwitting instrument for external adversaries seeking to sow discord from within.

Furthermore, the emphasis on protecting democratic institutions from the distorting effects of illicit wealth highlights the intrinsic link between clean governance and national security. Corruption and financial crime are increasingly recognized not just as legal infractions, but as strategic vulnerabilities that compromise state sovereignty.

Conclusion and Future Outlook

President Prabowo Subianto’s address at PAN’s 28th anniversary served as a multifaceted message encompassing security, governance, and democratic preservation. By reframing modern conflict around the realities of digital manipulation and information warfare, the president underscored the shifting nature of threats to Indonesian sovereignty. Simultaneously, his sharp critique of economic hijacking in democratic processes serves as a foundational challenge for political parties, lawmakers, and citizens alike.

As Indonesia continues to assert its position as a major regional power and a stable democracy on the global stage, navigating the dual challenges of digital-era security and political integrity will remain paramount. The administration’s focus on building both physical and digital resilience points toward a comprehensive approach to statecraft—one that recognizes that the defense of the nation begins as much on the screens of its citizens as it does on its borders.

Muhammadiyah Announces Early Ramadan 1448 Hijriah Calendar Using Global Unified Hijri Calendar System

by Ali Ikhwan
written by Ali Ikhwan

The Pimpinan Pusat (PP) Muhammadiyah has officially released its calendar for the upcoming Islamic year 1448 Hijriah, utilizing the Kalender Hijriah Global Tunggal (KHGT), or the Global Unified Hijri Calendar. According to this standardized calculation, the first day of Ramadan 1448 H is set to fall on Monday, February 8, 2027. This announcement provides a definitive planning horizon for the millions of Muhammadiyah followers across Indonesia who rely on the organization’s methodical approach to astronomical calculation, even as the broader Indonesian populace awaits the traditional government-led confirmation process.

The Methodology Behind the KHGT

The decision to adopt the Kalender Hijriah Global Tunggal (KHGT) represents a significant shift in how Islamic dates are determined. Historically, the determination of the lunar month relied heavily on localized sightings of the crescent moon (rukyatul hilal), which often resulted in regional discrepancies in the start of fasting months. The KHGT system, championed by Muhammadiyah, seeks to eliminate these geographical variations by applying a unified, calculation-based (hisab) approach that transcends local horizons.

By utilizing high-precision astronomical data, the KHGT aims to establish a singular, globally consistent calendar for the Islamic world. This method allows for the determination of dates years in advance, providing organizational certainty for religious institutions, educational centers, and individual practitioners. For the year 1448 H, the calendar indicates that Ramadan will span 29 days, with the final day of fasting occurring on March 8, 2027. Consequently, the first night of Tarawih prayers is expected to commence on the evening of Sunday, February 7, 2027.

Chronology of Key Dates for Ramadan 1448 H

Based on the official KHGT projections, the timeline for the holy month is clearly delineated. This advanced scheduling is intended to assist in long-term logistics, from religious programming to community resource management.

  • Beginning of Ramadan: 1 Ramadan 1448 H, Monday, February 8, 2027.
  • First Tarawih Prayer: Evening of Sunday, February 7, 2027.
  • Nuzulul Quran: 17 Ramadan 1448 H, Wednesday, February 24, 2027.
  • Final Day of Ramadan: 29 Ramadan 1448 H, Monday, March 8, 2027.
  • Eid al-Fitr (1 Syawal 1448 H): Tuesday, March 9, 2027.

The calculation of Nuzulul Quran—the commemoration of the revelation of the Quran—on February 24, 2027, serves as a mid-point marker for the month of reflection and spiritual devotion. The early designation of Eid al-Fitr for March 9, 2027, also provides a significant lead time for public planning, travel, and social coordination.

Government Procedures and the Role of the Sidang Isbat

While Muhammadiyah has finalized its schedule, the Indonesian government, through the Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kementerian Agama), maintains a separate administrative process for the determination of the start of Ramadan. In Indonesia, the government typically employs the "Sidang Isbat"—a formal plenary session involving representatives from various Islamic organizations, scholars, and government officials—to confirm the commencement of the month.

The government’s procedure combines scientific calculation (hisab) with the visual confirmation of the moon (rukyatul hilal) at multiple observation points across the Indonesian archipelago. Because this process is contingent upon actual physical observations made closer to the date, the Ministry of Religious Affairs does not typically issue a definitive calendar for Ramadan years in advance. Consequently, there remains a possibility of a calendar divergence between the Muhammadiyah schedule and the official government-sanctioned start date.

This dual-track system is a recognized aspect of the Indonesian religious landscape. It reflects the diverse approaches to jurisprudence within the Islamic community, where some scholars emphasize the necessity of human observation (rukyah), while others, like those represented by Muhammadiyah’s KHGT, emphasize the mathematical certainty of the lunar cycle.

Broader Implications and Societal Harmony

The announcement of the 2027 Ramadan calendar serves as a point of reflection on the broader implications of calendar synchronization. In a nation as vast and culturally diverse as Indonesia, the harmonization of religious dates remains a matter of ongoing dialogue. The existence of the KHGT is, in part, an effort by Muhammadiyah to contribute to a more predictable and unified Islamic calendar, potentially reducing the ambiguity that often precedes the start of the holy month.

Societal implications of these announcements are multifaceted. For businesses and public service providers, having an early estimate—even if it differs slightly from the official government stance—allows for better operational preparedness. Schools, universities, and community centers can align their academic and social calendars with greater ease.

However, the Ministry of Religious Affairs continues to emphasize that for the purpose of national unity and public policy, the results of the Sidang Isbat remain the primary reference point. The Ministry routinely encourages the public to wait for the official government announcement to ensure national uniformity in the observance of fasting and the celebration of Eid al-Fitr.

Religious Context and Preparatory Practices

Beyond the technicalities of the calendar, the announcement brings into focus the spiritual preparation required for the month. Islamic tradition places significant importance on the period leading up to Ramadan. Scholarly articles and public discourse in Indonesia often highlight the necessity of spiritual and physical readiness, including the practice of ritual purification (mandi junub) and the recitation of specific prayers.

As 2027 approaches, the inclusion of resources regarding spiritual practices—such as the importance of daily supplications (doa) and maintaining social harmony during periods of religious observation—underscores the dual nature of Ramadan as both a time of intense personal worship and a time of communal responsibility. MUI (the Indonesian Ulema Council) and other religious authorities have frequently stressed that while the excitement of the holy month is vital, it should be conducted in a manner that respects the religious practices of other communities, especially in a multicultural society where dates may overlap with other regional observances.

Analytical Perspective on Lunar Calculation

The debate between hisab (calculation) and rukyah (sighting) is not unique to Indonesia but is a global topic of discussion among Islamic jurists. The KHGT’s reliance on the Global Unified Hijri Calendar is a bold step toward institutionalizing a standardized Islamic timekeeping system. Proponents argue that in the modern era, where astronomical precision is absolute, the reliance on weather-dependent physical sightings is increasingly viewed as an unnecessary source of potential division.

Critics of the unified calendar model, however, often argue that the tradition of sighting the moon is an essential, time-honored practice that connects the believer directly to the observation of the natural world, as encouraged by prophetic tradition.

As of early 2026, the status of Ramadan 1448 H remains a case study in this ongoing balance between tradition and innovation. Muhammadiyah’s proactive publishing of the 2027 calendar serves as a testament to its commitment to modernizing the application of Islamic jurisprudence through science, while the government’s adherence to the Sidang Isbat process reflects a commitment to traditional consensus and national cohesion.

Conclusion: Planning for the Future

For citizens and observers, the key takeaway is that while the date of February 8, 2027, is firmly established within the Muhammadiyah framework, the broader national consensus will be finalized through the standard governmental channels as the date draws nearer. As the year 2027 approaches, the Ministry of Religious Affairs will continue its routine of gathering observational data, ensuring that the final decision regarding the first day of fasting reflects the collective agreement of the nation’s religious leaders.

This early projection provides a valuable tool for those who rely on the KHGT for their religious and logistical planning. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of community dialogue in navigating the complexities of lunar-based religious calendars. As Indonesia moves toward 2027, the focus will remain on balancing the accuracy of astronomical calculation with the inclusive, deliberative nature of national religious decision-making. Through this synthesis, the country aims to maintain a harmonious environment where religious observance is marked by clarity, devotion, and collective unity.

Forum H20 Dihadiri 48 Negara, BPJPH Perkuat Kolaborasi Ekosistem Halal Global

by Laily UPN
written by Laily UPN

The Badan Penyelenggara Jaminan Produk Halal (BPJPH), operating under the auspices of the Indonesian government, has officially convened the prestigious 5th Summit of Halal 20 (H20) in Jakarta, marking a monumental milestone in the nation’s ongoing efforts to position itself at the epicenter of the global halal ecosystem. The high-profile international forum brought together 450 delegates representing 48 countries, establishing a robust platform for diplomatic engagement, cross-border commerce, and regulatory harmonization. This year’s summit, anchored by the overarching theme “Bridging Bridges: Connecting Nations & Stronger Partnerships through Global Halal Trade & Economy,” reflects a concerted push to dissolve trade barriers, foster mutual recognition agreements among international halal certification bodies, and build a more resilient, inclusive, and interconnected global halal supply chain.

The grand inauguration of the H20 summit drew an elite assembly of domestic and international dignitaries, underscoring the strategic geopolitical and economic importance that governments worldwide now attribute to the halal sector. High-ranking Indonesian officials in attendance included the Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture, Pratikno; the Minister of Creative Economy and Head of the Creative Economy Agency, Teuku Riefky Harsya; the Minister of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), Maman Abdurrahman; and the Special Envoy of the President for MSMEs, Creative Economy, and Digital Affairs, Ahmad Ridha Sabana. The international profile of the event was significantly elevated by the presence of prominent foreign leaders, notably the Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato’ Seri Ahmad Zahid bin Hamidi, and the Minister of Food and Drug Safety of the Republic of Korea, Yu-Kyoung Oh. Furthermore, the gathering saw robust participation from Arsjad Rasjid, Chair of B57+ Asia Pacific, alongside numerous foreign ambassadors, heads of international halal certification agencies, and key strategic partners from both the public and private sectors.

Strategic Vision and Background Context of the Halal 20 Forum

The genesis of the Halal 20 forum traces back to the growing realization that while the global Muslim population—and by extension the consumer base for halal-compliant goods—is expanding exponentially, the international trade architecture governing these products remains fragmented. Historically, disparate national standards, non-standardized certification procedures, and a lack of mutual recognition agreements among various domestic accreditation bodies have created unnecessary bottlenecks for exporters and importers alike.

Recognizing these inefficiencies, BPJPH and its international counterparts conceived the H20 platform to serve as the premier multi-lateral dialogue for regulatory authorities, industry titans, religious scholars, and economic policymakers. The forum aims to transcend traditional trade boundaries by establishing universal benchmarks for product integrity, safety, and supply chain transparency. By convening in Jakarta—the capital of the nation with the largest Muslim population in the world and a rapidly maturing mandatory halal certification regime—the 5th Summit serves as both a policy laboratory and a networking nexus designed to streamline the flow of halal food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and lifestyle goods across continents.

Over the course of the multi-day summit, delegates engaged in rigorous plenary sessions, bilateral ministerial meetings, and technical workshops focused on key pillars of the contemporary halal economy. Discussions centered on the digitization of traceability systems, the incorporation of blockchain technology to verify halal supply chain integrity from farm to fork, and the integration of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) into multinational value chains.

Distinguished Insights and Ministerial Perspectives

The diverse array of speakers at the 5th Summit of Halal 20 highlighted the multifaceted nature of the modern halal economy, which has long outgrown its traditional classification as a strictly religious dietary framework to emerge as a dominant force in global commerce, sustainable investing, and ethical tourism.

In his keynote address, Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Pratikno emphasized that the expansion of the halal economy must go hand in hand with human capital development and institutional capacity building. He noted that as global demand for ethical and wholesome products surges beyond traditional Muslim-majority markets, nations must invest heavily in research, development, and vocational training to ensure that the workforce supporting the halal sector is equipped with cutting-edge technical skills.

Minister of Creative Economy Teuku Riefky Harsya brought a dynamic perspective to the forum by linking the halal industry with the burgeoning creative economy. He pointed out that halal lifestyle products—encompassing modest fashion, Islamic design, digital media, and culinary innovations—represent a goldmine of economic potential. By infusing creativity, cultural heritage, and modern technology into halal commodities, developing nations can capture higher-value segments of the international market.

Meanwhile, Minister of MSMEs Maman Abdurrahman and Presidential Special Envoy Ahmad Ridha Sabana underscored the imperative of empowering grassroots enterprises. They argued that while large conglomerates often dominate export markets, the true backbone of the halal ecosystem lies in small businesses. Integrating MSMEs into the global halal trade network requires targeted financial inclusion, simplified regulatory compliance pathways, and robust digital transformation initiatives. The presence of international heavyweights, such as Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Ahmad Zahid bin Hamidi, added substantial diplomatic weight to the discussions. Malaysia, possessing a mature and globally respected halal ecosystem, shared valuable insights into regulatory governance and Islamic finance integration. Similarly, South Korean Minister of Food and Drug Safety Yu-Kyoung Oh demonstrated the universal appeal and technical rigor of halal compliance, showcasing how non-Muslim-majority nations are successfully innovating to tap into the lucrative global halal market through stringent safety and quality standards.

The Economic Implications of Regulatory Harmonization and Sovereignty

A central theme woven throughout the 5th Summit of Halal 20 was the delicate balance between maintaining rigorous national regulatory standards and fostering seamless international trade. In recent years, Indonesia’s implementation of mandatory halal certification laws through BPJPH has sparked global discussions regarding economic sovereignty and consumer protection.

Proponents of robust national halal regulations argue that mandatory certification acts as a crucial pillar of economic sovereignty, ensuring that products entering domestic markets meet strict ethical, health, and religious criteria while empowering local regulatory bodies to safeguard consumers. However, stringent import requirements can occasionally pose challenges for foreign trading partners, making forums like the H20 essential for ironing out diplomatic and technical friction.

By hosting 48 nations and facilitating direct dialogues between certification bodies, BPJPH is actively working to establish mutual recognition agreements (MRAs). These agreements allow foreign halal certificates—issued by bodies accredited by BPJPH—to be seamlessly accepted in Indonesia, and vice versa. This reciprocal framework minimizes redundant testing and auditing processes, significantly reducing trade costs and accelerating customs clearance times.

Economists and trade analysts observing the summit have noted that successful implementation of H20 resolutions could trigger a paradigm shift in South-South and North-South trade relations. As supply chains become increasingly diversified in the post-pandemic era, multinational corporations are looking to stable, high-growth economies in Southeast Asia to anchor their regional operations. A unified halal standard reduces compliance risks for these global players, encouraging foreign direct investment (FDI) into halal industrial zones, logistics hubs, and processing facilities across Indonesia.

Broader Impact and Future Outlook for the Global Halal Landscape

The conclusion of the 5th Summit of Halal 20 in Jakarta signals a critical turning point for the international halal architecture. As the forum draws to a close, participating nations are tasked with translating high-level diplomatic consensus into actionable domestic policies and binding multilateral frameworks.

The implications of the Jakarta summit extend far beyond immediate trade volumes. By fostering closer cooperation between regulatory agencies such as Indonesia’s BPJPH and South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, the forum demonstrates that the halal economy is an inclusive global domain that transcends cultural and religious boundaries. Ethical consumption, product traceability, hygiene, and sustainability—core tenets of the halal philosophy—increasingly resonate with mainstream consumers worldwide who prioritize health, safety, and corporate social responsibility.

Moving forward, the success of the H20 initiative will be measured by the operationalization of its core objectives: the acceleration of digital integration in supply chains, the broadening of MSME market access, and the widespread signing of mutual recognition agreements among participating states. As Indonesia continues to assert its leadership on the global stage, hosting landmark events like the 5th Summit of Halal 20 reinforces the nation’s vision of becoming the undisputed global hub for halal trade, innovation, and ethical economic prosperity by the middle of the decade.

Tragic End for Toraja Travel Driver Aris Sanda After Armed Group Interception in Papua Pegunungan

by Laily UPN
written by Laily UPN

The fragile security landscape of Indonesia’s Papua Pegunungan region has once again claimed the life of an innocent civilian, highlighting the persistent dangers faced by transportation workers operating in remote interior routes. Aris Sanda, a long-haul travel driver originally from Toraja, South Sulawesi, and affectionately known by his community as Bapak Tasya, met a tragic end after his vehicle was intercepted by an armed separatist faction along the critical transportation corridor connecting Wamena to Mbua in Jayawijaya Regency. What began as a routine commercial transit journey concluded in horror, with the victim discovered dead inside his charred vehicle near the picturesque yet isolated Lake Habema area.

The incident has sent shockwaves through local communities, transport unions, and national legislative bodies alike, intensifying ongoing debates regarding civilian safety, logistical security, and the broader socio-political complexities of the Papua conflict. As law enforcement and military apparatuses ramp up investigative efforts, the brutal killing has underscored the profound human cost borne by everyday workers who facilitate vital economic and passenger links across challenging geographical terrains.

Anatomy of an Interception: Chronology of Events

The sequence of events unfolded on Tuesday, September 15, commencing in the early morning hours. Around 06:00 Eastern Indonesia Time (WIT), Aris Sanda was operating his commercial "lajuran" transport vehicle, navigating the rugged roadway from Wamena toward Mbua in Jayawijaya Regency. Transporting a number of passengers and essential logistical items, Sanda’s vehicle was part of the standard daily traffic relying on this vital artery to sustain commerce and mobility between highland settlements.

According to official operational summaries provided by Lieutenant Colonel Inf M. Wirya Arthadiguna, Head of Information for the Habema Joint military command (Koops TNI Habema), the transit routine was abruptly shattered near the Lake Habema junction, situated around Gunung Boy in Trikora District. A heavily armed faction materialized along the roadway, signaling the vehicle to halt.

Upon stopping, the armed individuals subjected both the driver and his passengers to mandatory checks and interrogations. In a tactical maneuver that spared the general passengers, the armed group ordered the travelers to turn around and return safely toward Wamena. However, Aris Sanda was singled out, separated from the rest of the civilian contingent, and forcibly abducted by the armed assailants, who escorted him deeper into the remote terrain surrounding Lake Habema.

Captivity and Circulating Digital Evidence

As security forces quickly mobilized initial search protocols following reports of the vehicle’s disappearance, chilling details regarding Sanda’s final hours began to emerge through digital channels. The driver was reportedly subjected to captivity and coercion by the armed elements before his execution.

A digital video recording rapidly circulated across various media platforms and messaging applications, providing a disturbing visual record of the unfolding crisis. In the footage, Sanda is visible standing in the middle of a remote roadway, flanked and surrounded by multiple armed individuals brandishing weapons. The video captured moments of duress, during which the civilian driver was allegedly coerced into holding the separatist Bintang Kejora (Morning Star) flag while making enforced statements concerning the political status of Papua.

National police investigators and joint military intelligence units immediately incorporated these digital artifacts into their formal forensic workflows, analyzing the metadata, audio cues, and background geography to verify the timeline of coercion and to identify the specific individuals present during the ordeal.

Discovery of the Remains Amid Difficult Terrain

The pursuit to locate Sanda faced immediate environmental hurdles. On Wednesday, September 16, specialized units from Koops TNI Habema launched extensive search and sweep operations across the high-altitude topography surrounding Lake Habema. Initial assessments during the early hours of Wednesday were hampered by severe weather patterns, including dense fog, freezing temperatures, and rugged terrain that drastically limited visibility and impeded motorized vehicular progress.

Despite these logistical constraints, the joint task force pressed forward. Within hours of the initial morning setback, the search parties successfully located the grim remains of Sanda’s commercial vehicle. The automobile had been intentionally set ablaze, reduced to a blackened, structural shell resting in the remote wilderness.

Upon closer inspection, the charred remains of Aris Sanda were discovered inside the burnt vehicle cabin. The extreme heat of the fire had caused significant structural damage to both the transport automobile and the victim’s remains. Tactical teams immediately secured the perimeters for forensic processing, subsequently executing a solemn evacuation protocol to transport the body out of the highlands. The remains were initially transferred to the Wamena Regional General Hospital (RSUD) for preliminary forensic identification, post-mortem examinations, and identification procedures before being prepared for final repatriation to his grieving family in Makassar and Toraja.

Official Investigations and Attribution of Responsibility

Following the recovery of the body, a joint investigative team comprising personnel from the Indonesian National Police (Polri) and the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) executed a thorough crime scene investigation (Olah TKP). Investigators meticulously combed the areas surrounding both the initial interception point and the final vehicle combustion site, recovering ballistic fragments, personal artifacts, and vehicular debris to reconstruct the exact manner of execution.

Preliminary security assessments place responsibility for the atrocity squarely on elements linked to the West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB), specifically factions operating under the command structure of OPM Kodap III Ndugama. The TNI has maintained that Sanda was an innocent civilian worker simply fulfilling his professional duties—transporting civilian passengers and regional provisions across a public highway—when he was targeted.

Authorities have intensified targeted operations to track down the perpetrators, emphasizing that the deliberate targeting, abduction, psychological coercion, and subsequent murder of a non-combatant driver constitute severe violations of basic humanitarian principles and criminal law. Law enforcement agencies continue to synthesize witness testimonies, digital forensic data from the circulating videos, and ballistic evidence to build a comprehensive prosecution file.

Socio-Economic Implications and Public Reactions

The killing of Aris Sanda has reverberated far beyond the immediate boundaries of Jayawijaya Regency, igniting widespread national anxiety regarding the safety of civilian logistics workers and public transportation operators in Papua’s interior highlands. Because "lajuran" drivers serve as the economic lifeblood of isolated communities—hauling staple foodstuffs, medical goods, and civilian commuters across hostile geographies—such attacks threaten to sever vital supply chains, driving up the cost of living and instilling a climate of paralyzing fear.

The incident has triggered sharp reactions from high-ranking political figures and parliamentary committees. Representatives from Commission I of the House of Representatives (DPR RI) vocally condemned the attack, characterizing the execution of a civilian driver as a direct, unacceptable assault on the safety and fundamental human rights of ordinary citizens working in the region. Lawmakers underscored that regardless of ongoing political and security disputes, civilians must remain strictly protected under humanitarian norms, and commercial transit workers should never be converted into targets of political violence.

Concurrently, institutional bodies such as the Regional Representative Council (DPD RI) special committees have seized upon the tragedy to reiterate urgent calls for a holistic evaluation of the central government’s security paradigms and conflict-resolution strategies in Papua. Observers note that incidents of this magnitude starkly expose the vulnerabilities inherent in maintaining civil infrastructure and commercial mobility across vast, under-resourced territories where insurgent factions retain tactical mobility.

As investigations proceed through the remainder of the week, the family, colleagues, and broader Torisan diaspora mourn a hardworking provider whose life was cut short by political conflict. For the authorities, the challenge remains not only bringing the direct perpetrators to justice through rigorous legal frameworks but also restoring a baseline of operational security that ensures no other civilian worker must navigate a highway under the constant shadow of violence.
