Warren Buffett Steps Down as Berkshire Hathaway Chairman at Age 96, Ending Historic Six-Decade Era of Corporate Leadership

by Pevita Pearce
written by Pevita Pearce

The corporate landscape has undergone a monumental shift as Warren Buffett, widely regarded as the most successful and influential investor of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, officially stepped down from his position as Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. At 96 years of age, Buffett’s decision to relinquish the chairmanship marks the definitive close of an extraordinary chapter in modern financial history. The leadership transition, which takes effect immediately, sees Buffett transitioning into the newly created role of chairman emeritus. Concurrently, his son, Howard Buffett, has been appointed to succeed him as chairman of the board, marking a seamless generational handover at the helm of the American multinational conglomerate.

This governance restructuring follows a meticulously planned succession timeline that began unfolding roughly nine months prior, when Greg Abel formally assumed the responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer from Buffett. While Abel oversees the vast day-to-day operational machinery of Berkshire’s sprawling empire—which spans insurance, rail transportation, energy generation, and manufacturing—the board leadership has now been entrusted to Howard Buffett, ensuring the preservation of the unique corporate philosophy that has defined the organization for decades.

The Evolution of a Financial Titan: From Fading Textile Mill to Global Conglomerate

To understand the magnitude of Warren Buffett’s departure is to examine the transformation of Berkshire Hathaway from a struggling enterprise into an economic superpower. Buffett took control of Berkshire Hathaway in 1965, a time when it operated primarily as a declining textile manufacturing company in New England. Recognizing the structural headwinds facing the textile industry, Buffett gradually pivoted the firm’s capital toward insurance operations, most notably acquiring National Indemnity Company, which provided the float necessary to fund subsequent equity investments and corporate acquisitions.

Over the subsequent six decades, Buffett’s disciplined approach to capital allocation, preference for businesses with wide economic moats, and steadfast focus on intrinsic long-term value transformed Berkshire into a financial colossus. Today, the conglomerate boasts a market capitalization hovering around USD 1.1 trillion. Its portfolio includes iconic American brands such as GEICO, Dairy Queen, BNSF Railway, and Fruit of the Loom, alongside massive equity stakes in publicly traded giants like Apple, American Express, and Coca-Cola. Under Buffett’s stewardship, Berkshire generated compounding returns that vastly outperformed the broader S&P 500 index, turning patient long-term shareholders into multi-millionaires and cementing Omaha, Nebraska, as an annual pilgrimage site for the global investing community during the company’s legendary weekend shareholder meetings.

A Dual-Track Succession Strategy: Separating Governance from Operations

The appointment of Howard Buffett as Chairman of the Board, alongside Greg Abel as Chief Executive Officer, reflects a carefully structured governance model designed to protect Berkshire Hathaway’s distinctive corporate culture. Howard Buffett, who has served as a member of Berkshire’s board of directors since 1993, will not assume executive operational duties in his new capacity. Instead, his primary mandate is to act as the institutional guardian of Berkshire’s core values: simplicity, unwavering integrity, fair dealing, and decentralized management that grants autonomous operating executives the freedom to run their respective businesses without bureaucratic interference from corporate headquarters.

This dual-track leadership structure addresses one of the most critical challenges facing multi-industry conglomerates: maintaining entrepreneurial agility and ethical standards as the organization scales. By separating the oversight of the board—tasked with cultural preservation and governance—from the day-to-day executive management led by Greg Abel, Berkshire attempts to insulate its decentralized business model from the conventional corporate bloat that often plagues enterprises of comparable scale.

"The culture that Warren built and the values that he has championed will remain at the core of Berkshire, and Howard will be its guardian," stated CEO Greg Abel in an official company communication released in Omaha. Abel’s remarks underscore the executive team’s commitment to continuity, assuring institutional investors, retail shareholders, and employees that the fundamental operating philosophy pioneered by Buffett will remain unaltered despite the top-level transition.

Reflections on Time: Buffett’s Final Message as Active Chairman

In characteristic fashion, Buffett marked the transition not through grand public press conferences, but via a direct, reflective letter addressed to the shareholders of Berkshire Hathaway. In the missive, the nonagenarian investor offered a philosophical perspective on his legendary career and the inexorable march of time.

"Time always wins. However, time has been generous to me," Buffett wrote, encapsulating a career spanning more than eighty years of active investing, spanning from the post-World War II economic expansion through the digital revolution and into the modern era of artificial intelligence.

Despite stepping down from the chairmanship, Buffett’s connection to the company he built remains unbroken. He will retain his seat on the board of directors, ensuring that his unparalleled institutional memory and strategic wisdom remain accessible to Abel, Howard Buffett, and the executive leadership team. Rather than completely severing ties, Buffett’s transition to chairman emeritus positions him as a senior counselor, available to provide guidance during major capital allocation decisions or macroeconomic shifts.

Recent Events and Contextual Shifts Surrounding the Transition

The announcement of Buffett’s departure arrives against the backdrop of significant personal and philanthropic developments for the billionaire investor. Earlier in the year, financial and philanthropic circles were shaken by a historic milestone: for the first time in two decades, Buffett temporarily delayed his annual philanthropic donation to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, a decision prompted by scrutiny surrounding the Epstein case revelations and their implications for prominent philanthropic networks. This recalibration of his philanthropic schedule highlighted Buffett’s increasing focus on streamlining his personal legacy, estate planning, and the future distribution of his massive fortune, the vast majority of which is earmarked for charitable foundations managed by his children.

Simultaneously, the broader macroeconomic environment has presented unique challenges for Berkshire Hathaway. With cash reserves swelling to unprecedented levels—surpassing USD 300 billion in preceding quarters—analysts and market participants have closely scrutinized the conglomerate’s capital deployment strategy. The scarcity of attractively priced acquisition targets of sufficient scale to move the needle for a trillion-dollar enterprise has forced Abel and Buffett to exercise extreme patience, a discipline that remains a hallmark of the Berkshire playbook.

Implications for Investors and the Broader Financial Markets

The departure of Warren Buffett as chairman marks the end of an era for global financial markets, yet institutional analysts generally view the transition as low-risk due to Berkshire’s thorough, multi-year succession planning. Unlike many founder-led corporations that experience severe volatility upon the departure of their visionary leaders, Berkshire Hathaway has methodically institutionalized its investment philosophy.

  1. Operational Continuity Under Greg Abel: With Abel securely entrenched as CEO, day-to-day capital allocation, underwriting decisions, and subsidiary management continue under a seasoned leader who worked alongside Buffett and the late Charlie Munger for decades. Abel’s deep familiarity with Berkshire’s energy and utility investments provides a steady hand during a transitional period for global energy markets.
  2. Cultural Stewardship via Howard Buffett: The presence of Howard Buffett as board chairman assures investors that corporate governance will remain aligned with the ethical standards established in the twentieth century. The focus on decentralization and minimal corporate overhead is expected to endure.
  3. The Cash Deployment Question: The market will continue to monitor how Berkshire manages its monumental cash hoard. Without Warren Buffett at the helm of the board, analysts will watch closely to see if Abel adopts a more aggressive approach to share repurchases, dividend initiations, or large-scale acquisitions to put the capital to work in an evolving economic landscape.

Conclusion: A Lasting Legacy in Global Finance

Warren Buffett’s transition to chairman emeritus closes a chapter that fundamentally reshaped the practice of value investing. From his early days managing investment partnerships in Omaha to steering a trillion-dollar global enterprise, Buffett demonstrated that patience, emotional discipline, and unwavering integrity could achieve superior long-term results in a market often dominated by short-term speculation.

As Berkshire Hathaway enters this new era under the combined leadership of Greg Abel and Howard Buffett, the foundational principles laid down over sixty years ago remain intact. While time may have ultimately prompted a change in titles, the institutional ethos of Berkshire Hathaway stands positioned to endure well into the future, bearing the permanent imprint of the "Oracle of Omaha."

From Pre-Independence Visions to Global Campuses: The Century-Long Evolution of Muhammadiyah Higher Education

by Basiran
written by Basiran

The persistent expansion of the Perguruan Tinggi Muhammadiyah-’Aisyiyah (PTMA) network, which currently encompasses 165 higher education institutions spanning across the Indonesian archipelago and extending internationally to Malaysia, represents the culmination of a visionary educational blueprint conceived decades prior to the nation’s independence. Far from being a recent phenomenon or an opportunistic response to modern educational demands, the establishment of universities and colleges under the auspices of Muhammadiyah stems from foundational discussions initiated by early organization leaders in the pioneering decades of the 20th century.

This deep-rooted historical trajectory highlights an institutional commitment to educational reform, societal progress, and intellectual leadership. As these institutions continue to evolve and adapt to the demands of the twenty-first century, their foundational ethos remains firmly anchored in the principles of progressive Islamic renewal, known locally as tajdid, which seeks to harmonize religious devotion with empirical science, technological advancement, and institutional resilience.

Historical Roots and Early Conceptualization

The conceptual framework for establishing higher education institutions within Muhammadiyah was not forged in the post-colonial era of nation-building, but rather during the nascent stages of the Indonesian nationalist movement. Historical archives indicate that formal deliberations concerning advanced education began as early as July 1920. During a general membership meeting held on July 17, 1920, at the central headquarters (Hoofdbestuur) of Muhammadiyah in Kauman, Yogyakarta, the Head of the School Division, Kiai Hisyam, formally articulated the urgent need to project educational development beyond primary and secondary schooling into the realm of higher learning.

This early vision reflected a profound understanding among the leadership that sustainable social reform and community empowerment required native populations to attain advanced academic qualifications, professional expertise, and critical intellectual capacities. Kiai Ahmad Dahlan, the founder of Muhammadiyah, consistently emphasized that the organization must act as a dynamic agent of change, operating at the vanguard of societal transformation rather than merely reacting to external pressures.

Chronological Milestones in Muhammadiyah Educational Expansion

To fully comprehend the scale of the current 165 PTMA network, it is essential to examine the historical chronology that transitioned the organization from a localized socio-religious movement into a national educational powerhouse.

  • 1912: Establishment of Muhammadiyah in Yogyakarta by Kiai Ahmad Dahlan, initially focusing on primary education, social welfare, and religious purification rooted in modern educational methodologies.
  • July 17, 1920: The landmark meeting at the Hoofdbestuur Muhammadiyah Kauman where Kiai Hisyam formally introduced the concept of establishing higher education institutions.
  • Mid-20th Century (Post-Independence): Active participation of Muhammadiyah intellectuals and leaders in the founding of premier national universities, notably the Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII) in Yogyakarta, which stands as one of the country’s oldest and most prestigious private higher education institutions.
  • 1950s–1980s: Systematic establishment of dedicated Muhammadiyah academies, institutes, and universities across various provinces, addressing regional disparities in access to higher education.
  • 1990s–2010s: Rapid consolidation, modernization, and standardization of PTMA infrastructure, focusing heavily on curriculum enhancement, accreditation, and scientific research capabilities.
  • Present Era: Management of 165 institutions distributed extensively across Indonesia, ranging from large comprehensive universities to specialized technical colleges, alongside the establishment of international extensions such as Universiti Muhammadiyah Malaysia (UMM).

Reflections from Leadership on Institutional Legacy

Addressing academics, administrators, and students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Kalimantan Timur (UMKT) in Samarinda, Central Executive Board (PP) Muhammadiyah Chairman Ahmad Dahlan Rais elaborated on the historical interconnectedness of early Indonesian higher education and Muhammadiyah’s foundational figures.

"Before independence, we were already discussing higher education. Therefore, if we examine history objectively in Yogyakarta, there are several oldest tertiary institutions, notably Universitas Islam Indonesia. If we trace the founders, they were individuals from Muhammadiyah," Ahmad Dahlan Rais stated during his address.

He further emphasized that this historical footprint extends beyond the Special Region of Yogyakarta into Central Java and other provinces, where prominent figures and cadres of the organization instrumentalized their reformist ideas to build durable institutional frameworks. According to Dahlan Rais, the underlying philosophy of Muhammadiyah has always been oriented toward progressive advancement. "Muhammadiyah wants to walk at the front of change, not just walk in front of the house," he remarked, underscoring the organization’s proactive stance in anticipating future societal shifts rather than remaining passive observers.

Strategic and Philosophical Imperatives for the Future

In interpreting the enduring legacy of Kiai Ahmad Dahlan—who famously reminded his followers that Muhammadiyah today must differ from Muhammadiyah tomorrow—the leadership has consistently urged its members to adopt a strategic, reflective, and future-oriented mindset. Modern institutional management within the PTMA network requires moving beyond basic operational inquiries to address complex strategic questions regarding operational methodology, societal relevance, and global competitiveness.

This forward-looking perspective is deeply intertwined with the pedagogical methods historically employed by Kiai Ahmad Dahlan. Historical accounts note that Dahlan dedicated significantly more time—approximately eight months—to teaching Surah Al-Asr (Chapter of Time) compared to the three months spent teaching Surah Al-Ma’un (Chapter of Assistance). While Al-Ma’un serves as the foundational theological driver for philanthropic action, poverty alleviation, and social service, Al-Asr emphasizes the critical value of time, discipline, strategic planning, and collective perseverance in righteous and truthful endeavors.

"Therefore, if one wishes to be a member of Muhammadiyah who possesses sufficient knowledge and comprehensive insight, they should return to Al-Asr, without sidelining Al-Ma’un," Dahlan Rais explained. This balance between immediate humanitarian concern and long-term temporal strategy forms the philosophical bedrock of the modern PTMA network.

Socio-Economic Impact and Broader Implications

The existence of 165 institutions within the PTMA network carries profound implications for the socio-economic and educational landscape of contemporary Indonesia and the broader Southeast Asian region. By providing accessible, high-quality tertiary education—particularly in regions outside the traditional metropolitan centers of Java—these campuses serve as crucial engines of human capital development, regional economic stimulation, and social mobility.

  1. Democratization of Access: The geographic dispersion of PTMA campuses ensures that students from diverse economic backgrounds and remote regions have access to accredited, competitive degree programs without the financial burden of relocating to major urban hubs.
  2. Research and Innovation: Modern PTMAs have increasingly transitioned into active hubs for scientific research, technological innovation, and community-based problem-solving, addressing pressing local and national challenges such as environmental sustainability, public health, and economic resilience.
  3. Internationalization: The establishment of institutions like Universiti Muhammadiyah Malaysia signifies a strategic evolution toward cross-border educational engagement, regional academic collaboration, and the projection of progressive Islamic scholarship onto the international stage.
  4. Institutional Continuity: As an organizational movement defined by continuous motion, Muhammadiyah treats stagnation as an existential impediment. The ongoing expansion, digital transformation, and quality assurance accreditation of its universities ensure that the network remains responsive to the demands of the fourth industrial revolution and the changing global labor market.

Conclusion

The journey of Muhammadiyah higher education—from an ambitious discussion in a Yogyakarta meeting hall in 1920 to a robust international network of 165 institutions—demonstrates the enduring power of visionary leadership and strategic institutional planning. By continuously aligning its educational mission with the imperatives of temporal awareness, intellectual rigor, and social responsibility, the PTMA network remains a central pillar in the intellectual and structural development of modern society.

How to Effectively Introduce the Life and Character of Prophet Muhammad to Children

by Raul Delapena Setiawan
written by Raul Delapena Setiawan

Children are naturally inquisitive, possessing an inherent desire to learn and understand the world around them. As they navigate their formative years, they frequently pose questions to their parents and guardians, seeking to make sense of historical figures, ethical standards, and spiritual concepts. Among the most significant subjects for Muslim families is the life of Prophet Muhammad. Introducing a historical and religious figure of such magnitude requires a pedagogical approach that balances factual accuracy with age-appropriate narrative techniques. Educators and child psychologists suggest that utilizing storytelling—a tradition deeply rooted in Islamic history—is the most effective method for instilling these values in young minds.

The Historical Context: Birth and Early Life

To understand the significance of Prophet Muhammad, one must first look at the historical records provided in classical texts, such as Sirah Nabawiyah by Ibn Hisham. According to these historical accounts, the Prophet was born in Mecca on a Monday, the 12th of Rabi’ al-Awwal, in the Year of the Elephant (roughly 570 CE).

His early life was defined by profound challenges that served to cultivate his resilience and humility. Born as an orphan after his father, Abdullah bin Abdul Muthalib, passed away before his birth, he later lost his mother, Aminah binti Wahab, at a very young age. These early hardships are essential teaching points for children, as they illustrate that personal adversity does not preclude one from achieving greatness. Following the death of his mother, he was placed under the care of his grandfather, Abdul Muthalib, and subsequently his uncle, Abu Thalib. These formative years underscore the importance of community support and the values of kinship and protection.

The Period of Youth and the Testimony of Character

As the Prophet matured, his character was distinguished by a level of industry and integrity that set him apart from his contemporaries. Historical records often highlight his time spent as a shepherd, a profession that requires patience, vigilance, and care—virtues that are highly relatable to children.

A significant narrative often cited by scholars involves Halimah binti Abi Dzuaib, the woman who served as his wet nurse. Historical accounts from the region of Bani Sa’ad describe how, during the period when the young Muhammad tended to the livestock, the conditions of the flocks improved significantly. While some may view these accounts through a spiritual lens, from an educational standpoint, they serve to illustrate the concept of "Barakah" or divine blessing, and the idea that hard work combined with honesty leads to prosperity. This period of his life demonstrates that excellence is not a sudden occurrence but the result of consistent, virtuous labor.

The Concept of ‘Al-Amin’: Integrity in Business

By the age of eight, the Prophet began accompanying his uncle on trade caravans to Syria. This period is crucial for parents and educators to highlight the Prophet’s reputation for honesty and reliability. In the competitive and often cutthroat trade environment of pre-Islamic Mecca, his reputation earned him the title "Al-Amin," meaning "The Trustworthy."

This title was not merely a social honor; it was a professional credential. His reputation for transparency was so well-established that Khadijah, a prominent and wealthy merchant, entrusted him with her trade assets for a expedition to the Levant. The successful outcome of this venture, based on his fair dealings and meticulous management, provides a practical example for children regarding the value of ethical business practices. In an era where digital information is abundant but trust is often scarce, these historical lessons on integrity remain highly relevant.

Crisis Management and Conflict Resolution

As the Prophet reached his mid-thirties, his role as a community mediator became evident. A primary case study for this is the restoration of the Kaaba in 605 CE. Following structural damage caused by environmental factors, the various tribes of Mecca disagreed on which group should have the honor of placing the Hajar Aswad (the Black Stone) into the wall of the Kaaba.

The dispute escalated to a point where physical confrontation seemed inevitable. The resolution, as facilitated by the Prophet, is a masterclass in diplomacy. By placing the stone on a cloak and having representatives from each kabilah (tribe) lift the edges of the cloth simultaneously, he ensured that every group felt included in the honor. This act prevented a bloodbath and cemented his reputation as a wise arbiter. For modern audiences, this event serves as a clear illustration of inclusive leadership—a skill that is increasingly vital in contemporary society.

Pedagogical Implications and Character Education

The efficacy of using the Prophet’s life as a teaching tool lies in its emphasis on "Akhlaq" (moral character). Scholars such as Safiur Rahman Mubarakfuri, in his seminal work Ar-Rahiq al-Makhtum, argue that the Prophet’s character was of such high moral standard that it surpassed ordinary human description.

When parents share these stories, they are not just conveying history; they are engaging in character education. Research in developmental psychology indicates that children who are exposed to narratives involving moral struggle and triumph are more likely to internalize those values themselves. The Quranic verse in Surah Al-Ahzab (33:21) reinforces this, identifying the Prophet as an "excellent pattern" for those who seek the pleasure of God.

Mengenalkan Nabi Muhammad Pada Anak

Strategies for Parents

To introduce these complex narratives effectively, experts recommend the following strategies:

  1. Chronological Sequencing: Start with his early life to foster a sense of empathy regarding his status as an orphan.
  2. Highlighting Relatable Virtues: Focus on specific traits like honesty, patience, and fairness rather than broad, abstract theological concepts initially.
  3. Active Storytelling: Use interactive methods such as role-playing or asking the child how they might have handled a situation, such as the dispute over the Hajar Aswad.
  4. Consistency: Frame these stories as a part of daily reflection rather than a one-time lecture.

Broader Societal Impact

The significance of these narratives extends beyond religious instruction. In a pluralistic society, understanding the historical, social, and ethical contributions of major historical figures like Prophet Muhammad fosters greater inter-cultural literacy. By focusing on his roles as a trader, a mediator, and a community leader, parents provide their children with a framework for understanding how ethical behavior functions within a society.

Furthermore, the emphasis on his role as a protector and a source of inspiration for his followers—a theme noted in historical texts—highlights the humanizing aspects of his biography. By presenting him as a man who navigated the same human experiences of loss, work, and social conflict as anyone else, parents make the Prophet’s life an accessible and practical model for navigating the challenges of the 21st century.

Ultimately, the goal of introducing these stories is to cultivate individuals who are not only knowledgeable about their history but are also equipped with the moral compass required to contribute positively to their own communities. By focusing on the consistent, verifiable virtues of his life—his honesty, his commitment to justice, and his ability to mediate conflict—parents can ensure that the legacy of the Prophet remains a living, breathing influence on the character of the next generation.

Mahasiswa Indonesia dan Jepang Kembangkan Inovasi Ekonomi Sirkular Berbasis Limbah di Tanimbar

by Raul Delapena Setiawan
written by Raul Delapena Setiawan

In a landmark collaboration aimed at addressing pressing environmental challenges through technological ingenuity, a consortium of students from Indonesia and Japan has unveiled two groundbreaking circular economy initiatives. Developed under the Building Entrepreneurial Mindset for Sustainable Technology and Society (BESTS) program, these projects transform discarded fishing nets and plastic waste into valuable economic assets, offering a potential blueprint for sustainable industrial practices in remote regions like the Tanimbar Islands.

The initiative, a joint venture between Sampoerna University and the Institute of Science Tokyo, represents a significant shift in academic pedagogy, moving beyond theoretical frameworks to provide hands-on solutions for real-world environmental degradation. By integrating cross-border knowledge exchange with practical engineering, the program addresses the dual challenges of marine pollution and energy scarcity in Indonesia’s outer islands.

The Genesis of the BESTS Program

The BESTS 2026 program was conceived as a response to the growing global mandate for sustainability. With the increasing urgency of the climate crisis, higher education institutions are under pressure to produce graduates who are not only technically proficient but also socially and environmentally conscious. The collaboration between Sampoerna University and the Institute of Science Tokyo was designed to bridge the gap between academic research and market-ready solutions.

According to Farid Triawan, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology at Sampoerna University, the program serves as a bridge for students to step out of the classroom. "BESTS provides students with the critical opportunity to observe how sustainability issues permeate both local communities and the global industrial landscape," Triawan noted. The inclusion of industry stakeholders, such as INPEX Masela Ltd., has been pivotal in ensuring that these academic projects are aligned with actual industry requirements and logistical realities.

Circular Economy for Marine Ecosystems: The Tanimbar Project

The Tanimbar Islands, located in the Maluku province of Indonesia, rely heavily on fishing as a primary economic driver. However, the accumulation of "ghost gear"—discarded or lost fishing nets—has become a significant threat to marine biodiversity. These non-biodegradable synthetic nets continue to trap marine life, leading to a phenomenon known as "ghost fishing," which severely depletes fish stocks and damages coral reefs.

A student team comprising Chintya Ramadhani, Keyzia Ariola Putri, Stivan Delon Sahertian, Tsukui Shun, and Mardo Malawau developed the project titled "A Circular Economy Business for Fishing-Net Waste in Tanimbar." Their methodology focuses on the systematic recovery and chemical recycling of these nets. By processing the discarded nylon and polyethylene nets, the team aims to create a closed-loop system where waste is repurposed into raw materials for new, durable, and environmentally friendly fishing equipment.

This project is not merely an environmental endeavor but an economic one. By creating a supply chain for waste collection, the students aim to incentivize local fishermen to participate in the recovery process, effectively turning a hazardous waste product into a source of secondary income for coastal communities.

Transforming Plastic Waste into Energy: The Eco-Fuel Initiative

While the Tanimbar project targets marine waste, the Eco-Fuel initiative addresses the challenge of terrestrial plastic pollution and energy poverty. Led by students Harsen Ramadhan, Luthfi Ahmad, Nona Brillyanti, Koki Nakazaki, and Hiroki Nozaki, this team explored the application of pyrolysis technology to manage non-recyclable, low-value plastic waste.

Pyrolysis, a thermochemical decomposition process, involves heating plastic waste in an oxygen-free environment to break down polymers into liquid fuel. The team’s goal is to convert plastic trash—which often clogs drainage systems or ends up in landfills—into an alternative fuel source for agricultural machinery.

The implications for rural Indonesian farmers are significant. High fuel costs frequently cut into the profit margins of small-scale agricultural operations. By providing a decentralized, localized method of producing fuel from waste, the Eco-Fuel project seeks to alleviate both the waste management burden and the financial pressure on farmers. This model of "distributed energy production" could serve as a template for other regions in Southeast Asia struggling with similar infrastructural limitations.

Data and Environmental Context

To understand the significance of these projects, one must look at the scale of the waste problem in Indonesia. According to data from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Indonesia produces approximately 67 million tons of waste annually, with a significant percentage being plastic that is either mismanaged or dumped into the ocean.

The Tanimbar region, being an archipelago, is particularly vulnerable to the accumulation of marine debris. The impact of ghost nets on local fisheries is estimated to contribute to a loss of approximately 5-10% of annual catch in specific coastal regions due to the degradation of the underwater habitat. By addressing this, the student-led initiatives align with Indonesia’s National Action Plan for Marine Plastic Debris, which targets a 70% reduction in marine plastic waste by 2025.

Furthermore, the pyrolysis project addresses the energy sector’s transition toward renewables. While plastic-to-fuel is not a carbon-neutral solution, it is classified as a "waste-to-energy" transition technology that reduces the need for virgin fossil fuel extraction and addresses the immediate environmental impact of plastic pollution.

The Role of Industry Partnerships

The involvement of INPEX Masela Ltd. underscores the importance of the private sector in supporting university-led innovation. Industry partners bring the necessary capital, technical expertise, and operational guidance to scale laboratory projects into pilot programs.

In the context of the BESTS 2026 program, INPEX Masela Ltd. provided the students with insights into the regulatory frameworks of the Indonesian energy sector, as well as the logistical challenges of operating in the Tanimbar region. This synergy ensures that the solutions developed by the students are not only theoretically sound but also commercially viable and legally compliant.

Implications for Future Engineering Education

The success of the BESTS 2026 program signals a potential shift in how engineering curricula are structured globally. The emphasis on cross-disciplinary and cross-border collaboration is essential in a world where environmental problems do not respect national boundaries.

By engaging Japanese and Indonesian students in a shared project, the program facilitates the exchange of technological expertise. Japan, with its advanced waste management and recycling infrastructure, provides a model for high-efficiency processing, while Indonesian students provide critical context regarding the socio-economic conditions and logistical hurdles of implementing these technologies in a developing nation.

Challenges and Future Outlook

Despite the promise shown by these initiatives, scaling them remains a challenge. For the fishing-net recycling project, the logistics of collecting and transporting bulky waste from remote islands to a processing facility present a significant financial barrier. Similarly, the pyrolysis process requires rigorous safety standards and consistent feedstock quality to produce fuel that will not damage agricultural equipment.

However, the student teams remain optimistic. The next phase for these projects involves creating scalable prototypes and engaging with local government bodies in Tanimbar to secure the necessary support for pilot implementation. If successful, these initiatives could pave the way for a more sustainable, circular economy in Indonesia, where waste is treated as a resource rather than a liability.

The BESTS 2026 program is a testament to the power of youth-led innovation. As global leaders continue to negotiate climate goals, it is often the localized, practical solutions developed by the next generation of engineers that will drive the most meaningful change. By turning "trash into treasure," these students are proving that with the right mindset and collaborative spirit, the barriers to a sustainable future can be dismantled, one discarded fishing net and one piece of plastic at a time.

Persib Bandung Target Goalkeeping Reinforcements as Transfer Window Speculation Surrounds Ivan Susak and Matej Markovic

by Azzam Bilal Chamdy
written by Azzam Bilal Chamdy

Persib Bandung Remains Active in the Transfer Market Ahead of a Grueling Campaign

The Indonesian Liga 1 powerhouse Persib Bandung is reportedly far from finished with its squad composition for the 2026/2027 season, with management actively exploring options to bolster the team further. Despite a busy transfer window that has already seen numerous tactical adjustments, the reigning heavyweights of Indonesian football are turning their attention toward a surprisingly specific area of the pitch. Rather than pursuing marquee attacking midfielders or lethal out-and-out strikers to elevate their frontline, the technical staff and scouting department at Maung Bandung have identified the goalkeeping department as a critical zone requiring immediate reinforcement.

According to swirling reports within the regional sports media landscape, two prominent international goalkeepers have emerged as the primary targets to potentially wear the blue jersey of Persib Bandung in the near future: Ivan Susak and Matej Markovic. Both players bring an imposing physical presence and extensive competitive experience, suggesting that the club is preparing for a grueling, multi-front campaign that will test the absolute limits of its squad depth. While club officials have yet to issue a definitive confirmation regarding negotiations, the persistent links to Susak and Markovic have electrified the fanbase and set the local sports media abuzz as the 2026/2027 season progresses into its crucial phases.

The Strategic Rationale Behind the Goalkeeping Pursuit

The decision by Persib Bandung to target elite goalkeeping talent stems from a rigorous mathematical and logistical reality of modern Asian football. Earlier in the campaign, Persib’s goalkeeping coach, Mario Jozic, publicly articulated the pressing necessity to expand depth between the posts. In a candid assessment delivered during the month of August, Jozic emphasized that the sheer volume of matches Maung Bandung is expected to contest necessitates a rotation-ready roster of high-caliber shot-stoppers.

When factoring in the domestic Liga 1 regular season, the high-stakes Piala Presiden, domestic cup competitions, and the demanding rigors of continental engagements in Asia, Persib is projected to navigate a staggering five distinct competitive fronts within a single football calendar. This unprecedented fixture congestion creates a scenario where fatigue, minor injuries, and loss of form are inevitable risks.

The physical toll of such a demanding schedule was vividly illustrated during Persib’s high-profile fixture against South Korean powerhouse FC Seoul. In that encounter, current first-choice goalkeeper Teja Paku Alam delivered a masterclass under severe pressure, making a series of crucial interventions to preserve a hard-fought 1-0 lead until the final whistle. While Teja’s heroics secured the three points, the match served as a stark reminder of how heavily the team relies on its custodians. For a club with continental ambitions and domestic dominance on the line, depending solely on a primary goalkeeper and inexperienced cover is a precarious strategy. Consequently, securing a proven, top-tier alternative is not merely a luxury for Persib; it is an absolute operational necessity.

Profile of Target One: Ivan Susak

At the forefront of Persib Bandung’s rumored transfer shortlist is Ivan Susak, a towering presence who has steadily built a formidable reputation across Southeast Asian club football. Standing at an astonishing 2.03 meters (approx. 6 feet 8 inches), Susak is an athletic anomaly whose sheer stature dominates the penalty area, offering an immense aerial advantage during set-pieces and crosses.

Currently, the 28-year-old goalkeeper is under contract with Lion City Sailors, one of the undisputed heavyweights of the Singapore Premier League. His current deal with the Singaporean club runs through June 30, 2027, meaning any prospective suitor would theoretically need to engage in formal negotiations with Lion City Sailors or wait out the duration of his agreement. However, Susak is no stranger to the faithful supporters of Persib Bandung. His name became widely recognized in Indonesian football circles due to his stellar performances for Lion City Sailors during direct encounters against Maung Bandung in continental club competition.

Statistical data underscores Susak’s reliability and elite shot-stopping capabilities. During the preceding domestic and regional campaigns, the Croatian-linked goalkeeper accumulated a remarkable 36 appearances for Lion City Sailors, anchoring their defense with authority. Most impressively, he registered 12 clean sheets across those matches, demonstrating a remarkable ability to organize his backline and maintain concentration under sustained pressure. His familiarity with the playing styles, travel logistics, and competitive intensity of Southeast Asian football makes him an exceptionally seamless fit for Persib Bandung, eliminating the typical adaptation period associated with players arriving directly from European leagues.

Profile of Target Two: Matej Markovic

In addition to the towering Ivan Susak, Persib’s scouting network has revived interest in Matej Markovic, a European-seasoned goalkeeper whose career trajectory adds an intriguing layer of international pedigree to the rumors. Born in Zagreb, Croatia, Markovic boasts a robust footballing education rooted in the traditions of Balkan and European club competitions.

Markovic currently plies his trade in the Veikkausliiga, the top tier of Finnish football, where he guards the net for HJK Helsinki, one of the most prestigious clubs in the Nordic region. According to records from Transfermarkt, Markovic stands at an imposing 1.92 meters (approx. 6 feet 3.5 inches), providing an excellent blend of positional coverage, agility, and modern ball-playing competencies. He officially secured his move to HJK Helsinki in February 2026, quickly integrating into the squad and adapting to the demands of European elite football.

However, the contractual situation surrounding Markovic offers a complex puzzle for prospective buyers. His contract with HJK Helsinki is slated to run until December 31, 2026, though the agreement includes a standard clause featuring an option for a contract extension for the subsequent season. Because he remains under contract with the Finnish club, securing his signature prior to the expiration date would require Persib Bandung to negotiate a transfer fee or structure a mutually beneficial agreement with HJK Helsinki’s management.

It is worth noting that this is not the first time Matej Markovic has been linked with a sensational switch to the Indonesian giants. Rumors connecting the Zagreb-born keeper to Maung Bandung had previously circulated during earlier transfer windows, suggesting that Persib’s analytical and recruitment departments have maintained a long-term dossier on the player’s development and availability.

The Broader Context of Persib Bandung’s Transfer Strategy

The pursuit of high-profile, internationally experienced goalkeepers like Susak and Markovic reflects a broader, highly ambitious strategic evolution within Persib Bandung. Over recent seasons, Indonesian football has witnessed a massive surge in commercial growth, competitive standards, and tactical sophistication. Clubs competing at the very apex of Liga 1 are no longer content with merely domestic success; they are actively seeking to establish themselves as dominant forces on the broader Asian stage.

To bridge the gap between regional dominance and continental competitiveness, Indonesian clubs must build rosters characterized by immense depth, tactical flexibility, and elite physical profiles. Goalkeeping, long considered a position where clubs could rely on domestic talent exclusively, has increasingly become a focal point for international scouting. By targeting players with experience in competitive Asian leagues like Singapore or high-tempo European environments like Finland, Persib is systematically eliminating potential vulnerabilities in its defensive architecture.

Furthermore, the integration of players of the caliber of Susak or Markovic would create intense, healthy competition for the starting berth. Healthy internal competition is widely recognized by modern technical directors as a catalyst for elevated performance levels. Teja Paku Alam, despite his stellar displays, would be pushed to maintain peak physical and mental sharpness, knowing that an elite challenger is waiting in the wings. This competitive ecosystem directly translates to improved consistency on the pitch, shielding the club from the unpredictable dips in form that often derail championship campaigns.

Chronology of the Transfer Rumors

The murmurs surrounding Persib Bandung’s goalkeeping hunt have evolved in distinct phases over the past several months:

  1. August 2026 – The Technical Assessment: Goalkeeping coach Mario Jozic publicly identifies the urgent need for expanded depth between the posts, citing the unprecedented five-competition schedule that Maung Bandung must navigate during the 2026/2027 football year.
  2. Late August to Early September 2026 – Scouting Expansion: Reports emerge that the club’s technical staff has intensified its search for foreign goalkeeping talent, focusing particularly on players with proven pedigree in continental or high-standard foreign leagues.
  3. Mid-September 2026 – Re-emergence of Specific Targets: Names previously linked to the club—Ivan Susak of Lion City Sailors and Matej Markovic of HJK Helsinki—reappear prominently in transfer speculation, backed by detailed statistical profiles and contract statuses compiled by platforms like Transfermarkt.
  4. Current Status – Speculation and Awaiting Confirmation: While the media heavily discusses the potential arrivals, official club channels at Persib Bandung maintain a disciplined silence, emphasizing that both players remain subjects of transfer market rumors rather than finalized acquisitions.

Implications for the Liga 1 Title Race and Continental Ambitions

Should Persib Bandung successfully orchestrate the acquisition of either Ivan Susak or Matej Markovic, the move would send a powerful shockwave throughout Indonesian football. It would signal to direct title contenders in Liga 1—as well as rival clubs across the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) competitions—that Maung Bandung possesses not only the financial muscle but also the strategic foresight to construct a truly impenetrable squad.

From a tactical perspective, a towering presence like the 2.03-meter Ivan Susak would completely alter how opposing teams approach set-pieces against Persib. Defending corners, indirect free-kicks, and aerial bombardments—traditionally challenging aspects for many Southeast Asian defenses—would be neutralized by a goalkeeper whose physical reach is virtually unmatched in the region. Conversely, securing Matej Markovic would introduce a modern, European-trained sweeper-keeper dynamic, capable of initiating attacks from the back with precise distribution, thereby enhancing Persib’s build-up play under high pressing from opponents.

However, bringing in foreign goalkeepers also introduces complex squad management dynamics, particularly regarding foreign player quota regulations set by the league governing bodies. Technical management must meticulously balance their foreign player allocations across defensive, midfield, and attacking departments to ensure optimal tactical equilibrium on the pitch.

Conclusion: A Waiting Game for the Bobotoh

As the 2026/2027 season progresses through its demanding schedule, the passionate fan base of Persib Bandung—collectively known as the Bobotoh—finds themselves in a state of eager anticipation. The club’s management has consistently demonstrated a commitment to assembling a squad capable of fighting on all fronts, and the ongoing speculation surrounding Ivan Susak and Matej Markovic is a testament to that unrelenting ambition.

While official announcements from the Persib Bandung front office are still pending, the sheer volume and credibility of the reports indicate that smoke rarely rises without fire in the high-stakes world of professional football transfers. Whether Maung Bandung ultimately pulls off a blockbuster deal to secure the towering Singapore-based Croatian or the Finnish-league tested Zagreb native remains to be seen. What is undeniably clear, however, is that Persib Bandung is leaving no stone unturned in its quest for sustained greatness, ensuring that every position on the pitch—most notably the last line of defense—is fortified for the grueling battles that lie ahead.

Atletico Madrid vs Real Madrid: The Tactical Showdown at Riyadh Air Metropolitano in the 2026-2027 LaLiga Derby

by Asep Darmawan
written by Asep Darmawan

The eyes of the footballing world will turn toward the Spanish capital this Sunday, September 20, 2026, as the Riyadh Air Metropolitano plays host to one of the most anticipated fixtures in European football: the Madrid Derby. In the seventh jornada of the 2026-2027 LaLiga season, Atletico Madrid welcomes Real Madrid in a match that transcends the standard quest for three points. Beyond the deep-seated rivalry between these two clubs, the encounter serves as a high-stakes tactical chess match between two of the most influential managers in the modern era: Diego Simeone and Jose Mourinho.

A Rivalry Renewed: The Simeone-Mourinho Dynamic

For football purists, the return of Jose Mourinho to the Spanish top flight has been a defining narrative of the 2026-2027 season. The Portuguese tactician, renowned for his pragmatic approach and defensive organization, finds himself standing in the opposite technical area from Diego Simeone, the architect of Atletico’s modern identity.

The history between these two managers is as complex as it is storied. While they are often viewed as philosophical soulmates—both prioritizing defensive solidity, tactical discipline, and psychological warfare—their head-to-head record in league competition tells a tale of one-sided dominance. Mourinho holds a commanding record against Simeone in LaLiga, having secured three victories during his previous tenure in Spain. Conversely, Simeone, despite his legendary status at Atletico, has yet to defeat a Mourinho-led side in a LaLiga fixture. This historical imbalance adds a layer of intense personal pressure to Sunday’s proceedings, as Simeone seeks to exorcise a ghost that has lingered in his career for over a decade.

Historical Context and The Evolution of the Derby

The Madrid Derby has evolved significantly since their first league meeting in April 2012, a match in which Mourinho’s Real Madrid dismantled Atletico 4-1 at the historic Estadio Vicente Calderón. At the time, Cristiano Ronaldo was the focal point of a Real Madrid side that was arguably at the peak of its powers.

Atletico Madrid vs Real Madrid, Simeone Kejar Kemenangan Perdana atas Mourinho

However, Simeone’s Atletico soon underwent a metamorphosis, moving away from being the "little brother" of Madrid to becoming a genuine European powerhouse. The defining moment of this shift, and perhaps the most significant victory for Simeone against Mourinho, occurred in the 2013 Copa del Rey final. In a pulsating encounter at the Santiago Bernabéu, Atletico fought back from a deficit to defeat Real Madrid 2-1 in extra time, ending a 14-year winless drought against their neighbors. That victory served as a catalyst for the "Cholo" era, proving that the gap between the two clubs could be bridged through sheer grit and tactical cohesion.

Analyzing the Tactical Landscape

Heading into this weekend’s match, both managers face distinct challenges. Mourinho’s Real Madrid is built on a foundation of transition efficiency and clinical finishing, utilizing a squad that blends experienced veterans with emerging world-class talent. The tactical objective for Mourinho is clear: to stifle Atletico’s creative outlets in the midfield and exploit the space left behind by their aggressive pressing.

Simeone, on the other hand, has been tasked with revitalizing an Atletico squad that has faced high expectations in the 2026-2027 campaign. His reliance on a compact defensive block, designed to force opponents into wide areas before launching rapid counter-attacks, remains his hallmark. The presence of international stars and world champions on both sides of the pitch—a total of eight World Cup winners are expected to feature—suggests that the technical quality on display will be at an all-time high.

Statistical Breakdown and Form Analysis

As of the seventh jornada, both teams are acutely aware of the implications of this fixture. The early stages of the LaLiga season are often defined by momentum, and a win in the Derby serves as a psychological boost that can last for months.

Real Madrid enters the match with a reputation for consistency in high-pressure environments, a trait synonymous with the Mourinho brand. Atletico’s strength, meanwhile, lies in the "Metropolitano factor." The stadium, known for its intimidating atmosphere, is a fortress where Atletico frequently punches above its weight. Statistical analysis of previous matches indicates that possession percentages will likely be secondary to the quality of transitions. In the modern game, the winner of this Derby is often the team that executes their defensive transition with more precision.

Voices from the Training Grounds

While pre-match press conferences have been kept largely guarded, the mood within both camps is one of calculated intensity. Representatives from both clubs have emphasized the significance of the "derby spirit."

"These matches are not just about the league table," an internal source close to the Atletico coaching staff noted. "They are about pride, identity, and the ability to execute a plan under the highest level of scrutiny. We respect the history, but the focus remains on the current task."

From the Real Madrid camp, the focus is equally resolute. The players are cognizant of the narrative surrounding the managers but are reportedly keen to maintain their professional focus. The ability to perform in the face of a hostile crowd is viewed as a prerequisite for any player wearing the Real Madrid jersey.

Broader Impact on the 2026-2027 Season

The outcome of this match will have significant ramifications for the LaLiga title race. With several other clubs nipping at the heels of the two Madrid giants, a loss for either side could represent an early-season setback that complicates the pursuit of the championship.

Furthermore, the managerial battle between Simeone and Mourinho will be scrutinized by tactical analysts globally. Their duel represents two distinct schools of thought within the "dark arts" of football—the preference for structure over flair and the prioritization of result over process. Should Simeone finally break his league-match drought against Mourinho, it could be interpreted as a passing of the torch or, at the very least, a validation of his endurance as a top-tier manager in an ever-changing league.

Atletico Madrid vs Real Madrid, Simeone Kejar Kemenangan Perdana atas Mourinho

Chronology of the Rivalry

  • April 2012: Mourinho’s Real Madrid defeats Simeone’s Atletico 4-1 at the Vicente Calderón in their first competitive meeting.
  • May 2013: Simeone secures a historic victory over Mourinho in the Copa del Rey final, with Atletico winning 2-1 after extra time at the Santiago Bernabéu.
  • 2013–2026: The two managers pursue separate paths across Europe, with Simeone cementing his legacy at Atletico and Mourinho managing various high-profile clubs, including stints in England and Italy.
  • September 2026: The two titans of the game reunite in LaLiga, marking the first time in over a decade that they face off in the Spanish domestic league.

Expectations for the Weekend

As the city of Madrid prepares for the influx of fans and media attention, the atmosphere in the capital is already reaching a fever pitch. Security protocols at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano have been increased to accommodate the high-profile nature of the match.

Fans can expect a game characterized by tactical caution in the opening twenty minutes, as both managers look to feel out the opponent’s weaknesses. However, the game is expected to open up as the intensity of the crowd and the urgency of the occasion dictate. Set-pieces, a traditional strength for both clubs, are expected to play a pivotal role in the final score.

Ultimately, the match is more than just a 90-minute spectacle. It is a reflection of the enduring appeal of the Madrid Derby and the tactical brilliance that continues to define the highest levels of Spanish football. Whether it is a tactical stalemate or an open-ended thriller, the encounter between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid on Sunday is set to be a cornerstone moment in the 2026-2027 season, leaving fans and pundits alike with plenty to analyze in the weeks to come. The stage is set for a historic clash, where the legacy of two iconic managers will be written once again on the grass of the Metropolitano.

Wuling Expands Electrification Portfolio with Eksion PHEV, Offering Dual-Energy Mobility for Modern Families

by Muslim
written by Muslim

Jakarta, September 18, 2026 – The landscape of automotive technology continues to evolve at a rapid pace, presenting consumers with an array of choices ranging from traditional combustion engine vehicles to fully battery-electric cars. Amidst this transition, a versatile middle-ground solution has steadily captured the attention of global and regional markets: the Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV). Bridging the gap between zero-emission daily commuting and long-distance driving freedom, PHEVs utilize both an external electric power source and a conventional internal combustion engine (ICE). Adding to this growing segment, Wuling Motors has officially introduced its latest innovation to the market, the Eksion PHEV, a seven-seater sports utility vehicle designed to address the multifaceted mobility demands of modern families.

The introduction of the Eksion PHEV highlights a strategic shift in how automotive manufacturers approach vehicle electrification, particularly in emerging markets where charging infrastructure development remains a work in progress. While fully electric vehicles (EVs) rely entirely on public and private charging stations, and traditional internal combustion engine vehicles depend exclusively on fuel service stations, dual-energy vehicles like the Eksion PHEV offer a dual-source approach. This flexibility has positioned PHEVs as a pragmatic transitional technology for motorists seeking to reduce their carbon footprint without encountering "range anxiety" during extended road trips.

Anatomy of Dual-Energy Mobility: How PHEV Technology Operates

At its core, a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle combines the mechanical advantages of a traditional fuel-powered automobile with the environmental and efficiency benefits of an electric vehicle. The vehicle features an onboard battery pack that can be replenished by plugging it into an external power supply, such as a domestic wall outlet or a public charging station. This stored electrical energy drives an electric motor, allowing the vehicle to operate purely on electricity for specified distances.

Simultaneously, the vehicle houses an internal combustion engine, which serves as a secondary or complementary power source. When the battery’s state of charge depletes, or when driving conditions demand heightened performance—such as rapid acceleration, high-speed highway cruising, or heavy hauling—the internal combustion engine seamlessly engages. In certain driving scenarios, the system combines the output of both the electric motor and the gasoline engine to optimize efficiency and deliver robust performance.

In the case of the newly unveiled Eksion PHEV, this complex orchestration of power is managed by Wuling’s proprietary LING Power technology architecture. This advanced system integrates a dedicated hybrid engine, a high-efficiency electric motor, and a Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT). Rather than operating as isolated components, these elements function as a cohesive, unified system that intelligently calculates and distributes torque and power based on real-time driving dynamics, road conditions, and driver inputs.

Engineering and Performance: The LING Power Architecture

The integration of the LING Power system within a seven-seater SUV framework represents a significant engineering achievement. Developing a powertrain capable of moving a large family vehicle efficiently requires a careful balance between electrical propulsion and thermal engine performance. The dedicated hybrid engine is specifically optimized to operate within its most thermally efficient range, often acting as a generator to recharge the battery or supplying direct mechanical drive to the wheels when cruising at optimal speeds.

The Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT) plays a pivotal role in this process. Unlike conventional automatic transmissions or continuously variable transmissions (CVTs), a DHT is engineered specifically for hybrid applications. It eliminates the traditional multi-speed gearboxes by using specialized clutch systems and electric motor generators to seamlessly blend power delivery. This results in smooth transitions between electric drive, hybrid drive, and engine-only drive modes, largely imperceptible to the vehicle’s occupants.

Furthermore, the Eksion PHEV is equipped with a versatile suite of driving modes that allow operators to tailor the vehicle’s behavior to their specific preferences and journey requirements. The system is bifurcated into character modes—namely Eco, Normal, and Sport—which adjust throttle response, steering weight, and power delivery curves. Additionally, energy management modes—including EV Max, EV First, Hybrid, and Fuel Priority—give drivers explicit control over how the vehicle consumes its dual energy reserves.

Strategic Product Positioning and Market Relevance

Aji Ibrahim, Product Planning Director at Wuling Motors, emphasized that the introduction of the Eksion PHEV is a direct response to the diverse lifestyle requirements of contemporary consumers. Speaking on the strategic positioning of the vehicle, Ibrahim noted that the multi-passenger configuration combined with hybrid versatility addresses a distinct gap in the market.

"The presence of the Eksion PHEV as a seven-seater SUV from Wuling provides families with the freedom to drive more flexibly, whether supporting daily urban mobility or embarking on long-distance family journeys," Ibrahim stated during the vehicle’s introductory briefing.

The choice of a seven-seater SUV configuration is particularly strategic. In many developing and emerging automotive markets across Southeast Asia, multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs) and large SUVs dominate family purchasing decisions due to their ability to accommodate larger households and transport substantial cargo. By applying PHEV technology to a seven-seater vehicle, Wuling aims to capture consumers who require space and utility but are hesitant to commit to a purely electric vehicle due to infrastructure limitations outside major metropolitan areas.

Operational Flexibility for Daily Commutes and Long-Distance Travel

The primary operational advantage of the Eksion PHEV lies in its dual-nature adaptability. For daily urban commuting—characterized by stop-and-go traffic, low average speeds, and short distances—drivers can prioritize electric operation. By utilizing the EV Max or EV First modes, motorists can complete their daily school runs, office commutes, and local errands entirely on electricity, producing zero tailpipe emissions and significantly reducing fuel expenditure.

Based on testing conducted under the China Light-duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC), the Eksion PHEV’s pure electric driving range reaches an impressive 125 kilometers on a single full charge. For the average commuter, this range is more than sufficient to cover multiple days of local driving before requiring a recharge.

Conversely, when weekend getaways or interstate travel beckon, the limitations of pure electric vehicles evaporate. By engaging the hybrid or fuel priority modes, the vehicle utilizes its internal combustion engine in tandem with the electrical system. According to Wuling’s official performance metrics derived from CLTC evaluations, the combined driving range—utilizing both a fully charged battery and a full tank of gasoline—exceeds 1,000 kilometers. This extended operational radius ensures that drivers can embark on cross-country road trips without the necessity of planning intricate routes around public charging station availability.

Economic and Environmental Implications of PHEV Adoption

The widespread introduction of plug-in hybrid vehicles carries notable economic and environmental implications for the broader automotive ecosystem. From an environmental standpoint, PHEVs serve as an effective bridge toward complete decarbonization. While pure battery electric vehicles offer the ultimate goal of zero tailpipe emissions, their adoption rate is frequently bottlenecked by high initial purchase costs, battery supply chain constraints, and underdeveloped charging infrastructure in secondary and tertiary cities.

PHEVs mitigate these hurdles by requiring significantly smaller battery packs than full EVs—thereby lowering manufacturing costs and reducing the demand for scarce raw materials like lithium, cobalt, and nickel—while still offering the vast majority of daily driving as zero-emission transit. For consumers who have access to home charging, the vast majority of fuel consumption can be virtually eliminated during the workweek, while the fallback of a gasoline engine removes the psychological and practical barriers associated with long-distance travel.

Economically, vehicles like the Eksion PHEV provide a cost-effective alternative to traditional fossil-fuel-dependent SUVs. Given the volatility of global oil prices, the ability to substitute gasoline with domestically generated electricity for daily commuting offers substantial household savings. At the same time, it shields consumers from the anxiety of grid unreliability or insufficient fast-charging networks during peak holiday travel seasons.

Industry Outlook and Future Trajectory

As automotive manufacturers navigate the complex regulatory environments and shifting consumer preferences of the mid-2020s, the powertrain strategy of major brands has grown increasingly pragmatic. While strict governmental mandates continue to push for lower fleet-average emissions, market realities dictate that consumer adoption must be accommodated through flexible technological solutions.

Wuling’s launch of the Eksion PHEV underscores this adaptive industry philosophy. By combining a family-friendly seven-seater architecture with an advanced LING Power dual-energy system, the company is positioning itself to capture a broad demographic of buyers who refuse to compromise between space, efficiency, and range.

As the vehicle officially enters the market, industry analysts will be closely monitoring consumer uptake and real-world efficiency figures to determine whether dual-energy PHEVs will outpace pure electric vehicles in multi-purpose vehicle segments. Regardless of short-term market fluctuations, the arrival of models like the Eksion PHEV signals a mature phase in the electrification movement—one where technology is tailored directly to the nuanced demands of everyday human mobility.

Zulhas Tegaskan PAN Akan Terus Bersama Prabowo Subianto dalam Puncak Peringatan HUT ke-28 Partai Amanat Nasional

by Asro
written by Asro

The political landscape in Indonesia remains firmly aligned with the current administration as the National Mandate Party (PAN) reaffirmed its unwavering support for President Prabowo Subianto. During the high-profile culmination of the party’s 28th anniversary celebrations, held at the Jakarta International Convention Center (JICC) in Senayan on Friday, September 18, 2026, General Chairman Zulkifli Hasan—familiarly known as Zulhas—delivered a definitive stance on the party’s strategic direction. Addressing a sea of party cadres, Zulhas emphasized that PAN’s commitment to the Prabowo-led government is not merely a political coalition arrangement but a reflection of shared ideological goals for the nation’s future.

A Renewed Commitment to National Ideals

The atmosphere at the JICC was charged with enthusiasm as thousands of PAN members gathered to mark the party’s nearly three decades of existence. In his keynote address, Zulhas explicitly posed a rhetorical question to the audience, asking whether the party should maintain its alliance with the President. The immediate, thunderous response of "Setuju!" (Agreed!) from the floor underscored the internal unity within the party regarding its support for the executive branch.

Zulhas elaborated on the philosophical underpinnings of this partnership, noting that the alliance is rooted in a collective vision for the Republic of Indonesia. He specifically highlighted Article 33 and Article 34 of the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia as the foundational pillars that drive this cooperation. These articles mandate that the economy be structured as a collective effort based on the principle of kinship, and that the state is responsible for the welfare of the impoverished and orphaned children. By framing the support for President Prabowo within the context of constitutional mandates, Zulhas sought to elevate the political coalition from a tactical alliance to a mission-driven partnership aimed at long-term national development.

Historical Context: Three Decades of Political Evolution

To understand the significance of this declaration, one must examine the historical trajectory of PAN. Founded in the reform era of 1998, PAN has navigated various political climates, from being a part of the opposition to serving as a cornerstone of the ruling coalition. Its relationship with Prabowo Subianto, the current President, is characterized by a long-standing history that transcends the 2024 general election.

PAN has been one of the most consistent supporters of Prabowo Subianto throughout his political journey. This loyalty was evident across three consecutive presidential election cycles. Even when other political factions shifted their allegiances or remained hesitant, PAN maintained a consistent, albeit sometimes evolving, relationship with the Gerindra Party leader. This long-term alignment has solidified a level of mutual trust between the party leadership and the presidential office, making the current declaration a culmination of years of political investment.

Chronology of the 2026 Anniversary Event

The celebration of the 28th anniversary was meticulously planned to serve as both a commemorative event and a political signal.

  • 19:00 WIB: Opening ceremonies featuring cultural performances highlighting the diversity of Indonesia.
  • 20:30 WIB: The arrival of senior party officials and key figures from the Coalition for Indonesia Maju (KIM).
  • 21:15 WIB: The keynote address by Zulkifli Hasan. The speech focused on the achievements of the current administration and the necessity of maintaining stability for the remainder of the presidential term.
  • 22:00 WIB: A solemn prayer session, where the party collectively requested divine guidance and protection for the President, signaling the ideological and moral dimension of their support.

The inclusion of a collective prayer at the end of the event was a strategic move to soften the hard-edged political rhetoric, framing the support for the President as a national duty rather than a mere transactional political move.

Zulhas Tegaskan PAN Akan Terus Bersama Prabowo Subianto

Implications for the National Political Landscape

The firm commitment expressed by Zulhas carries significant implications for the broader political landscape in Indonesia. In a system characterized by shifting alliances and fluid party loyalties, a stable, long-term commitment from a major party like PAN provides the President with a solid legislative base.

  1. Legislative Stability: With PAN’s continued support, the government can expect a smoother passage of major policies and fiscal budgets in the House of Representatives (DPR). This stability is crucial as the government navigates economic challenges, global supply chain pressures, and the implementation of long-term infrastructure projects.
  2. Coalition Cohesion: The announcement serves as a benchmark for other parties within the governing coalition. It signals that the core members of the coalition are not looking for an early exit or a shift in political orientation, effectively curbing rumors of internal fragmentation.
  3. Policy Continuity: By aligning with the administration’s focus on the constitutional mandates of social and economic welfare, PAN is effectively signaling its support for the current government’s "downstreaming" policies and social safety net expansions, which are central to the current administration’s platform.

Analytical Perspectives: Why Loyalty Matters

Political analysts observing the event note that for a party like PAN, maintaining a close relationship with the President is a strategic necessity to ensure its relevance in the national executive branch. However, the intensity of the language used by Zulhas suggests more than just administrative convenience. It indicates an ideological convergence.

Historically, PAN has positioned itself as a party that balances religious values with modern democratic principles. President Prabowo’s approach, which emphasizes strong national defense, sovereignty, and state-led economic development, aligns well with the nationalist-religious synthesis often championed by PAN. The mention of Article 33—often cited in discussions about state-controlled resources and the protection of the national economy—is a clear nod to the populist-nationalist economic policies that both the party and the President support.

Responses and Future Outlook

While the event was primarily an internal party affair, the impact has resonated across the political spectrum. Observers from various think tanks have noted that this reaffirmation of support is a calculated move to ensure that the party remains a central stakeholder in the government’s policymaking process.

Opposition figures have yet to issue formal responses to the speech, but the alignment between the executive and the legislature suggests that the administration will face minimal resistance on core policy issues in the coming months. For the grassroots members of PAN, the message is clear: the party is not drifting away from its partner. This sense of certainty is expected to bolster morale among the party’s regional branches as they prepare for upcoming local and regional political cycles.

As Indonesia looks toward the latter half of the 2020s, the political alliance between PAN and President Prabowo appears increasingly cemented. The rhetoric at the 28th anniversary was not just about the past; it was a proactive statement regarding the future. By tying the party’s destiny to the success of the President, Zulhas has set a high bar for internal discipline and external cooperation. Whether this strategy will lead to long-term electoral dividends for PAN remains to be seen, but in the immediate term, it has successfully established a clear, unified, and decisive political narrative for the party.

The event concluded with a strong message of unity, signaling that as long as the administration adheres to the principles of the 1945 Constitution and works toward the welfare of the Indonesian people, PAN will remain a steadfast ally. As the nation faces global economic uncertainties and domestic social challenges, this political stability is likely to be a defining feature of the current administrative period.

Ariel Noah Receives Nostalgic Suzuki RGR as Surprise Birthday Gift from Gading Marten and Friends

The landscape of Indonesian celebrity culture often centers on grand gestures and displays of camaraderie, but few recent events have resonated with fans as deeply as the milestone birthday celebration of Nazril Irham, better known as Ariel Noah. As the iconic frontman of one of the nation’s most successful rock bands celebrated his 45th birthday, he was met with a gesture that transcended mere materialism, touching upon the formative years of his life and career. The surprise presentation of a vintage Suzuki RGR motorcycle by his close friend, actor and presenter Gading Marten, serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring bond within Indonesia’s high-profile social circles and the sentimental value placed on the artifacts of one’s youth.

The event, which took place in an intimate setting surrounded by close confidants, was meticulously orchestrated to evoke nostalgia. The choice of the Suzuki RGR was not arbitrary; it was the exact model of the first motorcycle Ariel ever owned, representing a period of freedom and exploration before his ascent to national stardom.

The Chronology of the Surprise

The orchestration of the birthday surprise began weeks in advance, with Gading Marten acting as the primary coordinator among a tight-knit group of friends. The surprise was designed to culminate at a private gathering, where the atmosphere was kept light and celebratory.

On the day of the event, the atmosphere shifted as Gading Marten guided Ariel toward his garage. To maintain the element of surprise, Ariel was blindfolded with a black cloth, a classic trope of celebratory reveals that serves to heighten the anticipation of the recipient. Upon reaching the center of the garage, the pair stopped before a large object concealed under a heavy brown shroud.

Gading, known for his playful personality, engaged in a brief period of lighthearted deception, jokingly suggesting to the musician that the large, shrouded item might be a refrigerator. This redirection kept the mood festive until the final reveal. Once the blindfold was removed, the sight of the iconic two-stroke motorcycle triggered an immediate, visible reaction from Ariel, who recognized the machine that had served as his primary mode of transportation during his early adulthood.

The Significance of the Suzuki RGR in Indonesian Automotive History

To understand the emotional gravity of the gift, one must consider the cultural status of the Suzuki RGR in Indonesia during the 1990s and early 2000s. The Suzuki RGR 150 was a symbol of performance and prestige for the youth of that era. Equipped with a 150cc, two-stroke engine and a distinctive aerodynamic design that felt revolutionary at the time, it became a staple for those entering adulthood in the burgeoning urban centers of Indonesia.

For Ariel, a man who has often spoken about his early passion for mechanics and engineering, this motorcycle represents more than just a means of transport. It represents the "pre-fame" era of his life. Before the sold-out stadiums and the multi-platinum albums, there was the simplicity of riding through the streets of Bandung on a machine that required constant maintenance and a keen understanding of mechanical principles. By restoring or sourcing a pristine model of this specific bike, Gading Marten essentially gifted Ariel a tangible piece of his own history, effectively bridging the gap between the man he is today and the aspiring artist he was decades ago.

The Dynamics of Celebrity Friendship

The friendship between Ariel Noah and Gading Marten is well-documented within the Indonesian entertainment industry. Both men occupy influential positions in their respective fields—Ariel as a defining figure in rock music and Gading as a versatile media personality. Their relationship, which has spanned years of professional collaboration and personal support, is emblematic of a broader trend in the industry where public figures maintain tight-knit "inner circles" to navigate the pressures of fame.

Such gestures of generosity—often referred to as "passion gifts"—are common among high-net-worth individuals in the entertainment sector, yet they carry different weight when they involve historical artifacts. By focusing on an item of personal significance rather than a high-luxury modern vehicle, the gift highlights a shift in values: the appreciation of memory and personal heritage over the flashiness of modern consumerism.

Broader Cultural Implications and Media Reception

The viral nature of the video shared by Gading Marten on Instagram highlights the public’s appetite for authentic, human-centric moments involving celebrities. In an era where digital content is often heavily curated and scripted, the genuine surprise displayed by Ariel provides a refreshing contrast. The engagement metrics on social media platforms following the reveal indicate that fans are not just interested in the status of their favorite stars, but in their capacity for vulnerability and nostalgia.

From an analytical perspective, this event underscores the role of "identity anchors." For celebrities who live lives characterized by constant change, public scrutiny, and high-pressure environments, physical objects that serve as links to their past—before the onset of fame—become invaluable. The Suzuki RGR acts as an identity anchor for Ariel, grounding his current identity in the formative experiences of his youth.

The Impact on the Automotive Enthusiast Community

Beyond the personal sentiment, the gift has sparked a renewed interest in vintage two-stroke motorcycles within the Indonesian automotive community. The Suzuki RGR, while once common, has become a collector’s item. The effort involved in sourcing a well-maintained or restored model speaks to the dedication of the gift-givers.

In the broader context of Indonesian automotive culture, the two-stroke era is currently experiencing a renaissance. Collectors are increasingly seeking out models from the 90s, driving up market values and encouraging the restoration of machines that might otherwise have been consigned to scrap heaps. By bringing this bike into the public eye, Ariel and Gading have inadvertently boosted the cultural profile of these vintage machines, potentially inspiring a new generation of enthusiasts to look toward the history of local motorcycle culture.

Contextualizing the Milestone: Turning 45

Reaching the age of 45 is a significant milestone for any public figure, particularly in the demanding world of rock music. It is an age where many artists begin to reflect on their legacies. For Ariel, who has remained at the pinnacle of the music industry for over two decades, the birthday celebration was a moment to pause and acknowledge the journey.

The news coverage surrounding this event, while seemingly centered on a simple birthday gift, actually serves as a snapshot of the artist’s current stage in life. He is no longer the young musician riding a bike to rehearsals; he is an industry veteran whose influence shapes the musical landscape of the country. The motorcycle, therefore, serves as a bridge—a way to reconcile the youthful energy of his beginnings with the mature perspective of his present.

Conclusion: The Value of Sentimental Currency

As the video of the surprise continued to circulate across various digital platforms, the overarching narrative became clear: the most valuable gifts are those that reflect a deep understanding of the recipient’s personal history. While the Suzuki RGR has a measurable monetary value in the vintage bike market, its true worth to Ariel lies in its capacity to trigger memories of a time that shaped his character and his path as an artist.

This episode serves as a testament to the strength of the bonds forged in the Indonesian entertainment industry. Through this thoughtful act, Gading Marten and his friends provided more than just a birthday present; they provided an experience that honored Ariel’s past, acknowledged his present achievements, and cemented a friendship that continues to endure beyond the spotlight. As Ariel continues his career, this vintage motorcycle will likely remain a prized possession, not for its mechanical performance, but for the story it tells about the man who once rode it, and the friends who ensured he could ride it once again.
