Christine Hakim expresses deep shock and sorrow over the passing of Indonesian arts maestro Guruh Soekarnoputra

by Nana Wu
written by Nana Wu

The Indonesian entertainment and cultural landscape was plunged into mourning following the sudden passing of Mohammad Guruh Irianto Soekarnoputra, better known as Guruh Soekarnoputra. The news of the death of the legendary choreographer, songwriter, and cultural icon, who served as a pillar of the nation’s artistic heritage, triggered an immediate outpouring of grief from colleagues, public figures, and the wider Indonesian community. Among those most affected by the loss is veteran actress and cultural ambassador Christine Hakim, who shared her profound disbelief upon receiving the news while returning from a filming project in Pangandaran.

The emotional weight of the loss was palpable at the residence of the late maestro on Jalan Sriwijaya, Kebayoran Baru, Jakarta Selatan. As mourners gathered to pay their final respects, the sense of shock resonated among those who had worked closely with the man who had dedicated his life to preserving and modernizing Indonesian dance and music.

A Sudden Departure and the Reaction of Peers

The news of Guruh Soekarnoputra’s passing caught many by surprise, including those within his intimate circle. Christine Hakim, a close associate and longtime friend, learned of the situation while traveling back to the capital. During a somber moment at the funeral home, actress Asri Welas facilitated a brief phone conversation with Christine, who was still en route.

"I am currently on my way back from Pangandaran, where I have been shooting for a project," Christine stated, her voice thick with emotion. "I made the decision to rush back immediately upon hearing that Mas Guruh was in a critical condition."

For Christine, the shock stemmed from the lack of prior knowledge regarding any severe health complications. In the Indonesian arts community, Guruh was often viewed as a constant force of creative energy. The sudden transition from a man actively engaged in artistic discourse to one who has passed away has left his peers grappling with the reality of his absence. Christine recalled that only a month prior, she and Asri Welas had engaged in a video call with Guruh, during which they discussed potential future collaborations and the possibility of staging a new theatrical production.

"It is truly heartbreaking because I was never aware that Mas Guruh was suffering from any serious illness," she added. "When we last spoke, we were actively encouraging him to return to the stage. We were discussing, ‘Let’s create another performance, Mas Guruh.’ His passion for the arts remained at the forefront of our conversations."

The Legacy of Guruh Soekarnoputra

Guruh Soekarnoputra, the youngest son of Indonesia’s first president, Sukarno, carved a unique identity that extended far beyond his familial lineage. Born in Jakarta on January 13, 1953, he became a defining figure in the fusion of traditional Indonesian dance—particularly Balinese and Javanese styles—with contemporary music and global choreography.

Throughout his prolific career, Guruh founded the Gencar (Guruh Ensemble) and later the Swara Mahardika, a legendary performing arts group that influenced generations of Indonesian performers. His work often explored the intersection of nationalism and artistic expression, blending indigenous rhythms with symphonic arrangements. His contributions to the Indonesian music industry, including iconic songs and elaborate stage spectacles, cemented his status as a maestro.

Beyond the stage, Guruh was known as an intellectual who deeply valued cultural discourse. He frequently engaged with political and societal leaders, not necessarily to discuss partisan politics, but to advocate for the importance of cultural identity in a rapidly modernizing nation. Recent accounts, such as those shared by former President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, highlight how the maestro often preferred discussions centered on the preservation of traditional arts and the role of culture in building a nation’s character.

A Chronology of Artistic Influence

To understand the magnitude of this loss, one must look at the timeline of Guruh’s impact on Indonesian culture:

  • The 1970s: Guruh emerged as a pioneer in the music scene, notably through his groundbreaking album Guruh Gipsy, which is widely considered one of the most influential progressive rock albums in Indonesian history.
  • The 1980s: This decade marked the height of the Swara Mahardika era, which revolutionized stage performances in Indonesia. Guruh introduced complex choreography that integrated hundreds of dancers into a single, cohesive visual narrative.
  • The 1990s and 2000s: He shifted his focus toward large-scale cultural spectacles, including the "Untukmu Indonesiaku" concerts, which showcased the diversity of the Indonesian archipelago.
  • Recent Years: Despite stepping back from the limelight, Guruh remained an influential advisor and mentor to younger generations of choreographers and musicians, consistently pushing for the protection of Indonesian cultural property.

Implications of the Loss

The death of Guruh Soekarnoputra marks the end of an era for the Indonesian performing arts. Experts in the field of culture and sociology note that the void left by his passing is significant, particularly in the realm of preserving indigenous dance forms that are at risk of being forgotten by the younger, more digital-native generations.

Christine Hakim Syok Dengar Guruh Soekarnoputra Berpulang, Langsung Berangkat dari Pangandaran

"Guruh was not just a performer; he was a custodian of our cultural identity," noted a senior arts researcher. "His ability to bridge the gap between classical tradition and modern appeal was his greatest gift. Without his active advocacy, there is a legitimate concern regarding the continuity of high-quality, large-scale traditional productions."

The broader impact of his death is expected to trigger a wave of retrospectives and memorial performances. His peers, including Christine Hakim and others, have indicated that there is a collective desire to honor his memory by revisiting the projects they had discussed, potentially bringing some of his unfinished creative visions to fruition as a tribute to his life’s work.

Official Responses and Public Sentiment

While the government and national institutions have yet to issue a formal declaration regarding the specifics of his final public service, the response from the public has been immediate. Social media platforms in Indonesia have been flooded with tributes, with many users sharing clips of his past performances.

The funeral arrangements and the gathering at the Jalan Sriwijaya residence reflect the high esteem in which he was held. Dignitaries, artists, and former collaborators have been streaming to his home, underscoring the bipartisan respect he commanded. For many, Guruh was a unifying figure, someone who could discuss the aesthetics of a Javanese dance with the same passion as the complexities of national development.

Analysis: A Cultural Vacuum?

The departure of a figure like Guruh Soekarnoputra naturally raises questions about the future of the Indonesian arts scene. While there are many talented choreographers and musicians, few possess the institutional memory and the cross-disciplinary authority that he maintained.

His life’s work serves as a case study in the necessity of cultural stewardship. He demonstrated that Indonesian arts could compete on a global stage while maintaining deep, authentic ties to the local soil. The challenge for the next generation of Indonesian artists will be to emulate his commitment to authenticity without sacrificing the innovation that he championed.

As the nation mourns, the focus remains on the immense body of work he left behind. For friends like Christine Hakim, the immediate focus is on mourning a close companion, but the secondary focus is undoubtedly on the preservation of a legacy that defined the artistic heartbeat of Indonesia for over five decades.

"He was a visionary," Christine remarked in the final moments of her interview at the funeral home. "His vision for Indonesia, for our arts, was always so expansive. It is our duty now to ensure that this vision does not fade away with him."

As the final preparations for his internment are made, the Indonesian public continues to reflect on a man who transformed the way the country viewed its own artistic potential. Guruh Soekarnoputra’s life was a testament to the power of art to unify, to educate, and to inspire, leaving behind a footprint that will undoubtedly influence the cultural trajectory of the nation for years to come.

DPR Commission I Member Strongly Condemns Solomon Islands Prime Minister Over Unfounded Papua Human Rights Allegations at UN General Assembly

by Lina Hope
written by Lina Hope

Jakarta — Tensions at the international diplomatic level heightened following a scathing rebuke from a senior Indonesian lawmaker directed at the Prime Minister of the Solomon Islands, Matthew Cooper Wale. Abraham Sridjaja, a member of Commission I of the House of Representatives (DPR) representing the Golkar Party faction, launched a fierce condemnation against the Pacific island leader following his speech at the United Nations General Assembly. During the global summit, the Solomon Islands premier once again raised contentious and unverified accusations concerning alleged human rights violations in Indonesia’s Papua region.

Sridjaja categorized the statements delivered at the international podium as reckless, entirely one-sided, and fundamentally detached from objective reality on the ground. The sharp critique underscores Jakarta’s ongoing sensitivity and defensive posture regarding international interventions concerning its easternmost provinces, where a low-level separatist insurgency has persisted for decades.

The diplomatic friction highlights a recurring point of contention within multilateral forums, where several Pacific Island nations periodically raise concerns regarding Papua. Indonesia, however, consistently maintains that its sovereignty over the region is absolute and that internal challenges are being addressed through legal frameworks, regional autonomy, and targeted development programs rather than systemic state-sponsored abuses.

A Breach of Diplomatic Norms and Accountability

In a formal press statement released following the UN address, Sridjaja did not hold back in his assessment of the speech delivered by the Solomon Islands head of government. He argued that utilizing the General Assembly as a platform to levy serious accusations against a friendly neighbor without substantiated proof represents a severe breach of diplomatic protocol and international responsibility.

“This is a careless statement, if not a foolish one,” Sridjaja stated. “A head of government stands at the UN podium, flinging accusations against a friendly nation, yet dares not state where the report originated, who compiled it, or how it was verified. They demand transparency from Indonesia, but the source of their own accusations is concealed. That is the definition of a double standard.”

The Indonesian lawmaker emphasized that the international community should exercise rigorous scrutiny before amplifying narratives promoted by foreign entities that lack verified local context. According to Jakarta, external commentary often overlooks the complex security dynamics of the region, specifically the violent campaigns waged by armed separatist factions against both civilian populations and state security apparatuses.

Shifting the Focus: Atrocities Committed by Armed Separatist Groups

Sridjaja countered the allegations of state-sponsored human rights abuses by drawing international attention to the violence routinely perpetrated by the West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB), the military wing of the Free Papua Organization (OPM), commonly referred to in Indonesia as the Armed Criminal Group (KKB). He argued that the primary and most destructive threat to human rights, safety, and the right to life for the people of Papua stems directly from these militant factions.

“The Prime Minister of the Solomon Islands speaks of Melanesian brotherhood,” Sridjaja remarked. “Then where is his voice when those same Melanesian brothers and sisters are shot, taken hostage, and murdered by the OPM?”

To substantiate his claims, the lawmaker outlined a detailed chronology of violent incidents that have plagued the Papua region over recent years. This empirical data aims to reframe the human rights debate, shifting the narrative from unverified allegations against Indonesian security forces to documented atrocities committed by separatist insurgents against innocent civilians, including indigenous Papuans, public servants, educators, and humanitarian workers.

Chronology of Violence and Security Incidents in Papua (2025–2026)

The data presented by Commission I highlights a persistent pattern of violence targeting non-combatants, critical infrastructure, and public service providers intended to uplift the socioeconomic conditions of the local population.

The timeline of recorded incidents underscores the severe security challenges faced by authorities in the region:

  • April 2025 (Yahukimo): A brutal massacre targeting gold panners resulted in the deaths of over a dozen civilian workers. Victims suffered fatal injuries from gunshots, machetes, and traditional arrows, illustrating the indiscriminate nature of the violence inflicted by armed groups on economic migrants and local laborers alike.

  • March 2025 (Anggruk, Yahukimo): The murder of a schoolteacher sent shockwaves through the local educational community. Concurrently, at least seven other teachers and healthcare personnel were subjected to physical assaults and intimidation. This wave of violence crippled educational and medical services across dozens of remote districts, depriving indigenous children and families of basic human necessities.

  • July 2026 (Yahukimo and Puncak Districts): Armed separatist elements launched attacks resulting in the burning of a pioneering humanitarian mission aircraft operated by Associated Mission Aviation (AMA). In addition to destroying vital logistical assets used to supply isolated communities, the attackers torched buildings and residential quarters utilized by educators at the Pinapa elementary school.

  • August 18, 2026 (Jila District, Mimika): In a harrowing display of brutality, a 48-year-old indigenous woman, Neregingget Magai, was shot and killed after refusing to be taken hostage by armed insurgents. During the same assault, another victim was violently thrown into a ravine, suffering severe fractures. The attackers also abducted nine women and girls, forcing them into the deep forest. The group of abductees alarmingly included three elementary school students and a pregnant teenager, sparking widespread condemnation from local community leaders.

  • September 9, 2026 (Jayawijaya Regency): Three Civil Servants (ASN)—identified as Aprida Rapi, Alfonsius Albinus Mehan, and Willi Mbuik—were ambushed and shot dead while fulfilling official duties to distribute humanitarian assistance and community supplies in the Muliama district. Investigations by the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) subsequently revealed that the victims were brutally executed after being baselessly accused by the armed group of operating as state intelligence agents.

  • September 2026 (Wamena-Mbua Route): Aris Sanda, a commercial transport driver, was intercepted, taken hostage, and coerced under direct firearm threat to publicly declare support for Papuan independence. Following the forced political statement, he was executed, and his remains were left inside his vehicle, which the perpetrators subsequently set on fire.

Official Police Data and Regional Toll

Complementing the legislative warnings, official records from the Papua Regional Police provide a grim statistical overview of the human cost inflicted by insurgent activities. Data compiled between January and September 2026 indicates that 29 individuals lost their lives due to violent actions committed by armed groups within the Papua Highlands region alone. Out of this total, 25 were identified as innocent civilians, highlighting that the primary casualties of the separatist conflict are ordinary citizens striving to earn a livelihood and build communities, rather than legitimate military combatants.

Broader Diplomatic and Geopolitical Implications

The verbal clash at the United Nations General Assembly reflects the complex geopolitical dimensions surrounding the Papua issue. For decades, a coalition of small island developing states in the Pacific, occasionally led or influenced by nations such as the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu, has utilized international forums to advocate for self-determination in Western New Guinea. These diplomatic maneuvers often present domestic human rights concerns through a localized lens of anti-colonialism and ethnic solidarity.

Conversely, Jakarta maintains a strict red line regarding its territorial integrity. Indonesia’s foreign policy framework remains anchored in the principle of non-interference in internal affairs, while actively pursuing a strategy of "developmentalism"—pouring massive infrastructure investments, healthcare resources, and educational funding into the provinces of Papua, South Papua, Central Papua, and Highland Papua to accelerate modernization and improve the Human Development Index (HDI).

Analysts note that speeches delivered by Pacific leaders at global bodies like the UN serve dual purposes: addressing domestic political constituencies that harbor genuine sympathy for fellow Melanesian populations, and signaling international pressure on Jakarta. However, Indonesian officials argue that such rhetoric fails to engage with the complex realities on the ground, particularly the asymmetric warfare tactics employed by separatist groups that deliberately target civilian infrastructure to maintain a climate of fear.

The reaction from lawmakers such as Abraham Sridjaja signals that Indonesia will no longer let international criticism go unanswered. By aggressively shifting the discourse toward documented atrocities committed by insurgent groups, Jakarta aims to dismantle the moral authority of external critics who selectively ignore violence perpetrated against civilian populations by anti-government militias.

As the international community continues to monitor human rights developments globally, the discourse surrounding Papua remains a delicate balancing act between sovereign governance, security management, developmental progress, and international diplomacy. The strong stance adopted by the Indonesian parliament suggests that future diplomatic challenges from Pacific nations will be met with immediate, data-driven pushback aimed at defending the nation’s integrity and exposing the realities of security threats within the region.

Kemensos Verifikasi Jutaan Data Penerima Bansos Terindikasi Judi Online untuk Memastikan Ketepatan Sasaran Penyaluran

by Ali Ikhwan
written by Ali Ikhwan

Mekanisme Sanggah: Hak Konstitusional Penerima Manfaat

Indonesia Welcomes ITS Giuseppe Garibaldi as TNI AL Prepares to Commission KRI Sriwijaya in Historic Naval Milestone

by Ammar Sabilarrohman
written by Ammar Sabilarrohman

The Indonesian archipelago has entered a new era of maritime defense following the arrival of the former Italian Navy aircraft carrier, the ITS Giuseppe Garibaldi (C551), which docked at Pier 107 of Tanjung Priok Port in North Jakarta. This momentous event marks a critical turning point for the Indonesian Navy (Tentara Nasional Indonesia Angkatan Laut, or TNI AL), as the vessel is slated to become the first true aircraft carrier in the history of the national military fleet.

The arrival has instantly galvanized public interest and sparked intense strategic discussions regarding the definition, operational utility, and geopolitical implications of operating a floating airbase. Originally commissioned by the Italian Navy in the late 1980s, the veteran ship will undergo a comprehensive transition process before being officially renamed KRI Sriwijaya. The formal handover ceremony, which will include the symbolic striking of the Italian colors and the hoisting of the Red and White flag, is scheduled for September 24, 2026, at the historic Tanjung Priok naval facility.

Strategic Context and Chronology of the Acquisition

The path toward Indonesia acquiring its maiden aircraft carrier has been unfolding through quiet diplomatic and defense channels over recent years. Defense analysts note that the acquisition aligns with Indonesia’s broader strategic posture to modernize its "Minimum Essential Force" (MEF) framework into a more robust, blue-water capable maritime force. As an archipelagic nation comprising over 17,000 islands, projecting power, securing vital sea lanes of communication (SLOCs), and ensuring rapid response capabilities across millions of square kilometers of maritime territory present unique logistical challenges.

The timeline of the acquisition crystallized in mid-2026, culminating in the trans-continental voyage of the vessel from the Mediterranean to Southeast Asia. Following its arrival on September 18, 2026, the ship entered a tightly coordinated preparatory phase. The upcoming commissioning ceremony on September 24 will formalize its integration into the TNI AL. High-level diplomatic engagements have paralleled the arrival, with executive branch officials—including confirmations from the Ministry of State Secretariat—coordinating meetings between Indonesian leadership and visiting delegations from the Italian Navy to honor the bilateral defense partnership that facilitated the transfer.

Deconstructing the Asset: What Makes a True Aircraft Carrier?

The public discourse surrounding the arrival of KRI Sriwijaya has brought to light widespread curiosity about the mechanics and military classifications of aircraft carriers. In naval terms, a vessel’s designation is not merely a function of its sheer tonnage or physical length, but rather its architectural design and operational purpose. While destroyers, frigates, and corvettes routinely carry shipboard helicopters to expand their tactical horizons, they fundamentally operate as surface combatants equipped with missile batteries and deck guns as their primary armament.

Conversely, a dedicated aircraft carrier is engineered from the keel up as a mobile, floating aviation base. Its defining structural features include an extensive flight deck, an internal hangar bay equipped for aircraft maintenance and ordnance storage, sophisticated aviation fuel management systems, and specialized air-traffic control infrastructure. These systems allow the vessel to launch, recover, service, and sortie fixed-wing aircraft or rotary-wing assets far beyond the operational tether of land-based airfields.

The ITS Giuseppe Garibaldi, boasting a displacement of over 10,000 tons and a distinctive ski-jump ramp, was originally built to operate Vertical/Short Take-Off and Landing (VSTOL) aircraft such as the AV-8B Harrier II, alongside various antisubmarine and utility helicopters. Its inclusion in the TNI AL inventory dramatically alters the tactical baseline of the Indonesian fleet, providing an unprecedented capability to project air power over maritime zones devoid of stationary airbases.

Operational Doctrine: Balancing Combat Readiness and Humanitarian Missions

Despite the formidable offensive reputation traditionally associated with aircraft carriers globally, Indonesian defense leadership has signaled a uniquely pragmatic operational doctrine for KRI Sriwijaya. Chief of Naval Staff (KSAL) Admiral TNI Muhammad Ali has emphasized that upon taking up the mantle of KRI Sriwijaya, the vessel will not immediately mirror the high-intensity strike postures seen in major Western or regional blue-water navies.

Instead, the immediate operational focus will pivot toward Military Operations Other Than War (OMSP—Operasi Militer Selain Perang). Given Indonesia’s geographical vulnerabilities to natural disasters—including earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, and severe weather events—the ship’s expansive flight deck and massive internal capacity offer unmatched utility as a humanitarian and disaster relief (HADR) platform.

In scenarios where terrestrial infrastructure is crippled, bridges collapse, and coastal roads are washed away, conventional supply lines often grind to a halt. Under the planned utilization framework, KRI Sriwijaya will serve as an offshore staging platform and floating base for heavy-lift helicopters and advanced unmanned aerial vehicles (drones). This setup will allow naval logistics teams to rapidly dispatch medical aid, emergency rations, and evacuation personnel directly into isolated disaster zones without requiring functional local airstrips.

Furthermore, TNI AL officials have expressed strong interest in equipping the platform with modern VSTOL aircraft and rotary assets capable of seamless vertical maneuverability. This capability enhances the navy’s readiness not only for humanitarian interventions but also for maritime sovereignty patrols, search and rescue (SAR) coordination, and comprehensive territorial surveillance across the nation’s sprawling Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

Technical Overhauls and Fleet Integration

The transition of a specialized naval asset from a European NATO nation to Southeast Asia’s largest archipelagic state requires extensive technical remediation. Naval engineers and shipyard specialists are slated to execute thorough structural reinforcements, mechanical refurbishments, and propulsion overhauls to ensure the vessel’s systems align seamlessly with TNI AL maintenance standards and logistical supply chains.

The selection of the historic moniker "Sriwijaya"—paying homage to the ancient maritime empire that once dominated Southeast Asian trade and naval dominance from Sumatra—carries deep symbolic weight for the Indonesian military. It signals a national renaissance in maritime consciousness, reflecting historical ambitions to secure the seas through strength, diplomacy, and regional integration.

As the September 24 commissioning date approaches, military analysts and defense observers continue to parse the long-term implications of this acquisition. While operational hurdles remain—ranging from crew training cycles to the long-term sustainment of specialized aviation gear—the arrival of KRI Sriwijaya firmly establishes a new benchmark for Indonesian defense capability, transforming the horizon of national security and emergency response from the sea.

Polri Promotes 34 New Generals in Major Leadership Reshuffle to Strengthen Institutional Integrity and Professionalism

by Dwi Wanna
written by Dwi Wanna

In a significant administrative maneuver aimed at reinforcing the leadership structure of the Indonesian National Police (Polri), the institution officially inaugurated 34 new high-ranking officers to the rank of Brigadier General (Brigjen) in late September 2026. This promotion cycle, conducted at the Rupattama building within the National Police Headquarters in Jakarta, marks a pivotal shift in the organizational hierarchy, reflecting the force’s ongoing commitment to merit-based career progression and the strategic rotation of its senior command staff.

The ceremony, presided over by Chief of National Police (Kapolri) General Listyo Sigit Prabowo on Friday, September 25, 2026, served as the formal validation for officers who have demonstrated exceptional service, leadership, and operational success. The infusion of these 34 newly minted one-star generals is part of a broader, ongoing initiative to optimize the Police’s internal human capital management and ensure that critical divisions remain manned by experienced personnel capable of navigating the complex security challenges of the modern era.

The Dynamics of the Promotion Ceremony

The Korps Raport ceremony, a traditional event symbolizing the formal elevation of rank within the police force, was characterized by a somber and professional atmosphere. Among the notable figures who received their promotions were Brigadier General Dally Achmad Mutiara, Brigadier General Zefanja Honpry Dapas, and Brigadier General Ruruh Wicaksono. While the names of these officers have been publicly disclosed by the Public Relations Division of the Polri, the list of the 34 individuals represents only a segment of the larger group of 50 senior officers (Pati) who were elevated during this period, including advancements in higher echelons, such as the promotion of the Assistant to the Chief of Police for Operations (Astamaops) to the rank of Commissioner General (Komjen).

The event was not merely a ceremonial formality but a calculated message to the rank and file regarding the expectations placed upon high-level leadership. By elevating these officers, the Polri leadership aims to align senior management with the current national strategic agenda, which emphasizes the modernization of public service, the integration of digital technologies in law enforcement, and the enhancement of public trust through more humanistic and transparent policing strategies.

Pecah Bintang, Ada 34 Jenderal Baru Polri di September 2026

Strategic Context and Institutional Growth

The promotion of 34 Brigadier Generals is part of a comprehensive strategy to refresh the institutional leadership that has been unfolding throughout 2026. This process is not arbitrary; it is the culmination of rigorous performance evaluations, background screenings, and professional assessments overseen by the Police Promotion Council (Wanjakti).

In the context of the Indonesian security landscape, the role of a Brigadier General is multi-faceted. These officers are typically tasked with leading regional departments, supervising specialized investigative units, or serving as strategic advisors to the Chief of Police. Their promotion comes at a time when the Polri is undergoing a massive digital transformation, as evidenced by the recent launch of integrated digital vehicle registration (STNK) systems and centralized, automated traffic fine payment gateways. These technological advancements require a leadership cadre that is not only proficient in traditional law enforcement but also capable of overseeing sophisticated IT infrastructure and data security protocols.

Official Perspectives on Leadership and Responsibility

The Public Relations Division of the Polri, represented by Inspector General Johnny Eddizon Isir, emphasized that these promotions are a direct reflection of the organization’s meritocracy. Speaking on Saturday, September 26, 2026, Isir underscored that the elevation in rank is a recognition of the dedication and loyalty shown by the officers throughout their careers.

"Every rank promotion is a form of institutional appreciation for the dedication, loyalty, and performance of the personnel," Isir stated. "However, behind this promotion lies a significant mandate and an increasing responsibility to continue providing the best contributions to the institution, the nation, and the community."

Isir further clarified that these changes are vital for the continuous professional development of the force. By promoting these officers, the institution ensures a healthy rotation of leadership, preventing stagnation and allowing for the infusion of new perspectives. The emphasis on being a "teladan" or role model is paramount; high-ranking officers are expected to embody the values of integrity, neutrality, and public service, particularly as the police force faces increasing scrutiny regarding its conduct and effectiveness in the digital age.

Pecah Bintang, Ada 34 Jenderal Baru Polri di September 2026

Analyzing the Broader Implications

The shift in command structure is expected to have several long-term implications for the institution:

  1. Operational Efficiency: By placing experienced officers in new, high-stakes positions, the Polri aims to streamline decision-making processes. The transition of leadership is expected to bolster ongoing internal reforms aimed at reducing bureaucratic bottlenecks.
  2. Technological Integration: With the recent push toward a "Digital Police" model, the new generals are expected to champion the adoption of new systems. Their role will be to ensure that the rank and file at the operational level effectively utilize the tools provided, such as the aforementioned digital traffic enforcement systems.
  3. Public Perception and Trust: The Police leadership is acutely aware that the legitimacy of their authority rests on public trust. By promoting officers who have a proven track record of "humanistic" and transparent service, the institution is attempting to reshape its public image and move toward a model of community-centered policing.
  4. Career Path Continuity: This wave of promotions provides a clear signal to mid-career officers that the institution rewards consistent performance and adherence to organizational values, thereby boosting morale and retention rates within the officer corps.

Timeline and Procedural Background

The sequence of events leading up to the September 25 ceremony reflects the organized nature of the Polri’s administrative calendar. The promotions followed a series of internal assessments held in late August and early September. These assessments scrutinized the records of candidates against benchmarks such as academic achievement, previous field experience, and contributions to national security during high-profile events earlier in the year.

The following timeline provides context to the organizational movement:

  • Late August 2026: Initial assessments and review of potential candidates by the Wanjakti board.
  • Mid-September 2026: Finalization of the promotion list and notification of the candidates.
  • September 25, 2026: The formal Korps Raport ceremony at the Rupattama building, presided over by General Listyo Sigit Prabowo.
  • September 26, 2026: Official public statement and confirmation of the new leadership assignments by the Public Relations Division.

Future Challenges for the New Command

While the promotion ceremony marks a milestone for the 34 new generals, the path ahead is not without challenges. The Indonesian police force is currently tasked with managing the complexities of a changing digital economy, addressing evolving cyber-threats, and maintaining order in a society that is increasingly vocal about its expectations for accountability.

The new Brigadier Generals will be expected to serve as bridges between the high-level policy mandates issued by the National Police Headquarters and the daily realities faced by officers in the field. Their ability to successfully implement the recently launched digital systems, while maintaining the human element of policing, will be a key metric of their success.

Pecah Bintang, Ada 34 Jenderal Baru Polri di September 2026

Furthermore, the emphasis on being "humanis" (humanistic) is not just a slogan; it is a strategic necessity. As the Polri continues to modernize, it must reconcile its role as a law enforcement entity with the necessity of being a service-oriented organization. The newly promoted generals are seen as the vanguard of this cultural shift within the force.

Conclusion

The promotion of 34 new generals within the Indonesian National Police in September 2026 is a significant development that underscores the institution’s ongoing effort to modernize its leadership. By rewarding experience, dedication, and technical competence, the Polri is positioning itself to handle the multifaceted challenges of the mid-2020s.

As these officers assume their new duties, the focus of the organization remains clear: the enhancement of professional standards, the adoption of digital-first solutions, and the cultivation of a police force that is both effective in its enforcement duties and compassionate in its service to the public. For the Indonesian National Police, this leadership transition is more than a change in titles; it is an investment in the future of national security and the continued evolution of Indonesia’s public order and safety infrastructure. With the backing of the Chief of Police, these 34 leaders now step into a vital role, tasked with steering the institution toward a more efficient and transparent future.

The arrival of the newborn marks a significant transition in the lives of the young couple, who are now embarking on their journey into parenthood. The announcement, which quickly circulated across digital platforms, has drawn an outpouring of warm wishes, congratulatory messages, and expressions of support from fans, close friends, and extended family members alike.

The birth of the child introduces a fresh chapter for the household, capturing widespread public interest given Zara’s prominent career trajectory in the Indonesian creative and entertainment industry. As supporters and media outlets digest the news, the couple’s open and emotional sharing of their initial experiences as parents provides a relatable glimpse into the profound personal changes that accompany the arrival of a firstborn.

Chronology of the Blessed Arrival and Announcement

According to the official statements shared directly by Adhisty Zara through her verified social media channels, the blessed event took place on Friday, September 19, 2026. The labor and delivery proceeded smoothly, welcoming a healthy baby boy into the world. However, the couple opted to spend the immediate post-delivery days in privacy, bonding with the newborn and adjusting to the dynamic environment of a newly expanded family before making the formal announcement to the public a week later on Saturday, September 26, 2026.

In her detailed social media post, Zara formally introduced the newborn to the public, revealing the carefully chosen moniker that carries deep personal significance for the family. The baby boy has been officially named Benjiro Nayel Ali. The announcement was accompanied by poignant imagery capturing the early moments of parenthood, immediately resonating with followers who have monitored Zara’s personal and professional evolution over the years.

Deeply Personal Reflections on the Transition to Parenthood

The transition from an independent couple to a family unit is a monumental shift, a reality that Zara explicitly addressed in her heartfelt digital address. Describing the profound emotional impact of Benjiro’s entry into their lives, Zara articulated how the infant’s presence immediately transformed their everyday reality in ways both subtle and profound.

"Ever since that day, we continue to learn every single day—learning to know you, understanding a brand-new kind of love, and slowly learning to become parents to you," Zara continued. This candid acknowledgment of the vulnerabilities and rewards tied to early parenthood struck a chord with many seasoned mothers and fathers within her audience, fostering a sense of shared community experience.

A Promise of Unwavering Devotion and Gratitude

In the same digital address, Zara directed a portion of her message straight to her newborn son, framing his birth not merely as an event, but as an act of profound trust. By choosing them as custodians of his upbringing, Benjiro has bestowed upon Zara and Tsaqib a sacred responsibility that the couple has vowed to honor with absolute dedication.

"Thank you for choosing and trusting us to be your parents, sweetheart. We promise to always protect your trust with endless love," she wrote. This solemn pledge underscores the emotional maturity guiding the couple as they step into their new familial roles.

Furthermore, Zara did not overlook the extensive network of supporters who have stood by the couple throughout the pregnancy and delivery phases. Recognizing the psychological and emotional sustenance provided by their inner circle, the statement included a gracious acknowledgment directed toward family members, close friends, industry colleagues, and the broader public who kept the couple in their thoughts and prayers during the months leading up to the birth.

"Warm greetings to family, companions, friends, and everyone who has been praying for and eagerly awaiting the birth of our son," Zara added, rounding out her message with inclusivity and grace.

The digital response to the birth announcement was immediate and overwhelming. Within hours of publication, the post accumulated hundreds of thousands of interactions, featuring comments from fellow Indonesian public figures, actors, directors, and influencers. Many industry peers took to the comments section to express their congratulations, sending virtual blessings to baby Benjiro and offering words of encouragement to the new parents.

Broader Implications and Future Outlook

The entry of Benjiro Nayel Ali into the public consciousness through his parents’ announcement highlights a broader trend among contemporary Indonesian celebrities: the conscious curation of personal milestones. Rather than relying on traditional tabloid exclusive interviews, public figures increasingly leverage their personal platforms to dictate the narrative of their major life events, ensuring authenticity while retaining control over their family’s privacy boundaries.

For Adhisty Zara and Tsaqib, the immediate future will undoubtedly be defined by the demanding yet rewarding routines of infant care. Industry analysts note that while major life transitions such as marriage and childbirth often lead public figures to temporarily recalibrate their professional schedules, they frequently open up new avenues for public engagement, such as lifestyle endorsements, parenting content, and evolved artistic roles that reflect their new lived experiences.

As Benjiro grows, the young family stands poised at the beginning of a transformative journey. For now, the primary focus remains centered on the quiet, intimate moments of bonding, domestic adjustment, and the shared discovery of a love that has fundamentally reshaped the world for Adhisty Zara and Tsaqib.

Siapa Sabina Guseynova wanita asal Uzbekistan yang pernah dinikahi Guruh Soekarnoputra beda usia 27 tahun

by Neng Nana
written by Neng Nana

The passing of Guruh Soekarnoputra, the youngest son of Indonesia’s founding father President Sukarno and Fatmawati, on September 26, 2026, has prompted a renewed public interest in the personal life of the renowned artist and choreographer. Among the figures closely associated with his history is Sabina Guseynova, a professional dancer from Uzbekistan who was married to Guruh for seven years. The union between the Indonesian cultural icon and the Uzbek performer remains one of the most intriguing chapters of Guruh’s life, reflecting a convergence of cross-cultural artistic passions and high-profile social scrutiny.

The Origins of an Artistic Union

The narrative of Guruh and Sabina began not in the corridors of political power, but on an international stage dedicated to the arts. In April 2002, Guruh Soekarnoputra traveled to Pyongyang, North Korea, leading his celebrated dance and performance troupe, Gencar Semarak Perkasa (GSP). The mission was to participate in the prestigious The April Spring Friendship Art Festival, an event that brings together performers from across the globe.

It was within this setting that Guruh first encountered Sabina Guseynova, who was performing as a member of the official Uzbek dance delegation. Observers close to the troupe noted that Guruh, a man deeply immersed in the world of aesthetics, choreography, and music, was immediately captivated by Sabina’s technical proficiency and grace. For a man who had dedicated his life to the preservation and modernization of Indonesian traditional arts, Sabina’s background in classical dance and piano resonated as a shared language of expression.

A Transnational Romance and Wedding Chronology

Following their initial meeting in Pyongyang, the relationship moved quickly. Recognizing the depth of their connection, Guruh facilitated Sabina’s visit to Indonesia to meet the extended Soekarno family. The introduction was a significant event, as it included a meeting with Megawati Soekarnoputri, who at the time was serving as the fifth President of the Republic of Indonesia.

The courtship led to a swift engagement. In September 2002, Guruh traveled to Tashkent, Uzbekistan, to formally request Sabina’s hand in marriage from her family. The timeline of their marriage is documented as follows:

  • September 19, 2002: Formal engagement ceremony held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
  • September 20, 2002: The couple officially wed in a ceremony in Tashkent, adhering to local traditions.
  • October 19–20, 2002: A series of grand wedding receptions were hosted in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The Jakarta celebrations were held at the family’s residence in the Sriwijaya neighborhood of South Jakarta. The event was a high-society affair, attended by thousands of guests, including prominent political figures, artists, and diplomats. Sabina appeared in traditional Javanese bridal attire, symbolizing her integration into the culture of her husband.

Symbolic Union and Cultural Significance

The marriage was notable for the symbolic nature of the dowry (mas kawin) provided by Guruh. In a gesture that underscored his commitment to his father’s legacy and his personal intellectual values, Guruh presented Sabina with a copy of the Holy Qur’an, the seminal political text Di Bawah Bendera Revolusi (Under the Banner of Revolution), and the autobiography of President Sukarno.

At the time of the wedding, the couple’s age gap became a subject of significant media discourse. Guruh was 49 years old, while Sabina was 23. Despite the 27-year age difference and the vast geographical distance between their origins, the couple appeared to find common ground in their mutual dedication to the arts. Sabina’s lifelong training in classical piano and ballet provided a stable foundation for a partnership that was often described as a meeting of artistic minds.

The Erosion of the Marriage

Like many high-profile marriages that cross cultural and linguistic barriers, the relationship faced internal and external pressures. The couple maintained a relatively private life in Jakarta throughout the mid-2000s, though they were occasionally spotted at major cultural events. However, the union reached its conclusion after approximately seven years. In 2009, the couple opted for a legal separation. Since their divorce, Sabina Guseynova has largely remained out of the Indonesian public eye, maintaining a low profile that contrasts with the intense media interest that characterized their marriage.

Broader Impact and Historical Context

The marriage of Guruh Soekarnoputra and Sabina Guseynova serves as a case study in the intersection of celebrity culture and diplomacy in post-Reformasi Indonesia. Guruh was not merely a celebrity; as the son of the first President, his personal choices were often scrutinized through the lens of national identity.

Sociologists examining the event at the time pointed out that the marriage represented a shift in how the Soekarno family interacted with the global stage. By marrying an artist from Central Asia, Guruh reinforced his image as a cosmopolitan figure who sought to weave international influences into the fabric of his work with GSP.

Furthermore, the marriage provided a rare glimpse into the private life of a man who was otherwise notoriously guarded. While the marriage ultimately ended, it remains a significant footnote in the biography of Guruh Soekarnoputra. It highlighted his relentless pursuit of beauty and artistic perfection, qualities that defined his career as a choreographer and a composer.

Remembering Guruh Soekarnoputra

As the nation mourns the loss of Guruh Soekarnoputra, the resurgence of interest in his marriage to Sabina Guseynova acts as a reminder of his complex legacy. He was a man who lived at the center of Indonesia’s political history while simultaneously carving out a career as an avant-garde artist.

The fact that news outlets and the public are revisiting this chapter nearly two decades later underscores the enduring fascination with the Soekarno family. The story of the Indonesian maestro and the Uzbek dancer is a testament to the unpredictable nature of human connection, transcending borders and cultural divides.

In the wake of his passing, historians and art critics are beginning to compile a comprehensive overview of Guruh’s contributions to Indonesian culture. His work in the 1970s and 1980s, which blended traditional gamelan with Western pop and funk, remains influential. The brief period of his life shared with Sabina Guseynova serves as a reminder that his personal life was as eclectic and daring as the music he composed and the performances he directed.

As the country reflects on his death, the focus remains on his immense artistic output. However, the narrative of his life—including his seven-year marriage to Sabina—adds human depth to the public figure. Whether it was the grand receptions in Jakarta or the quiet intellectual exchange behind the scenes, the union of Guruh and Sabina was a moment in time that captured the imagination of a nation and continues to be a part of the complex, multifaceted story of the Soekarno lineage.

Moving forward, it is expected that further tributes will be paid to Guruh’s contributions to the arts. His influence on Indonesian dance, music, and theater is indelible, and while his marriage to Sabina Guseynova was but one part of a long and storied life, it remains a quintessential element of the broader narrative of a man who spent his life seeking to express the soul of Indonesia through the universal language of art.

Ketua Dewan Etik Partai Golkar Dorong Pembentukan Mahkamah Etik Nasional

by Dwi Wanna
written by Dwi Wanna

JAKARTA — Mohammad Hatta, Chairman of the Ethics Council of the Golkar Party, has formally proposed the creation of a National Ethics Court, a unified judicial body designed to consolidate the currently fragmented ethical oversight mechanisms across Indonesia’s state institutions. The proposal was introduced during a high-profile "Road to Campus" initiative and a subsequent National Lecture held at the Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University (UIN) in Jakarta on Thursday, September 24, 2026.

The discourse, which centered on the critical intersection of political integrity and public service, brought together key figures from the legal and academic spheres, including the Dean of the Faculty of Sharia and Law, Muhammad Maksum; former Constitutional Court Justice (2014–2025) Wahidudin Adam; and the Chairman of the Indonesian Sharia and Law Lawyers Association (PPSHI), Ilyas Indra.

The Rationale for a Unified Ethics Framework

The current ethical landscape in Indonesia is characterized by a patchwork of oversight bodies. Various institutions—ranging from the Honorary Council of the Election Organizers (DKPP) and the Judicial Commission to internal party ethics councils—operate within silos. Hatta argues that this fragmentation leads to inconsistencies in enforcement, delayed adjudication of ethical breaches, and a lack of standardized jurisprudence regarding what constitutes "ethical conduct" in the public sphere.

"The establishment of a National Ethics Court is not merely an administrative shift; it is a structural necessity to ensure the integrity of our democracy," Hatta stated during his presentation. "By integrating disparate ethics boards into a single, cohesive entity, we can foster a uniform moral compass for state officials, ensuring that accountability is not localized but universal."

Hatta’s proposal seeks to address the "institutional fatigue" often felt by the public when witnessing protracted ethical investigations. A unified court would theoretically possess the mandate to oversee ethical standards across both executive, legislative, and judicial branches, thereby reducing the influence of partisan protectionism that often plagues internal disciplinary processes.

Political Ethics and the Role of Party Kaderization

A significant portion of Hatta’s lecture was dedicated to his latest book, Sumbangsih untuk Bangsa: Kode Etik Partai, Jalan Panjang Menuju Politik Beretika (Contribution to the Nation: Party Code of Ethics, the Long Road to Ethical Politics). Addressing an audience of students and academics, Hatta emphasized that the foundation of a nation’s integrity is built within the walls of political parties.

"Political parties are the primary architects of the state’s human capital," Hatta remarked. "They serve as the engine for political recruitment, leadership selection, and the preparation of officials who will eventually hold the reins of national policy. If the internal mechanism of party ethics is compromised, the downstream impact on public policy and state governance is inevitably catastrophic."

Hatta’s argument aligns with contemporary political science research, which suggests that the quality of governance is directly proportional to the rigor of a party’s internal selection process. By advocating for a robust code of ethics, he aims to shift the culture of political parties from mere election-winning vehicles to institutions of civic virtue.

Contextualizing the Call for Reform

The timing of this proposal is significant. Over the last decade, Indonesia has witnessed several high-profile ethical controversies involving high-ranking officials across various branches of government. These incidents have often been handled by temporary or branch-specific ethics committees, leading to public skepticism regarding the efficacy of self-regulation.

The inclusion of former Constitutional Court Justice Wahidudin Adam in the panel provided a legal perspective on the feasibility of the National Ethics Court. Adam, who served on the bench during a period of intense constitutional scrutiny, has previously voiced concerns regarding the vulnerability of judicial independence to political pressures. A National Ethics Court could potentially serve as a buffer, ensuring that ethical breaches are adjudicated by a body that maintains high levels of institutional independence.

Data and Trends: The Ethical Deficit in Indonesian Politics

Data from the Indonesian Ombudsman and various anti-corruption watchdogs over the past five years indicates a rise in public complaints regarding the conduct of public officials, particularly regarding conflicts of interest and the misuse of state resources. While formal legal processes handle criminal acts, "ethical breaches"—such as nepotism, lack of transparency, and failure to perform duties—often fall into a grey area where disciplinary action is either non-existent or purely performative.

Statistics show that in the last election cycle, the number of ethical complaints filed with the DKPP rose by approximately 15% compared to the previous cycle. This trend highlights a growing public awareness of political conduct, but also a failure of existing institutions to keep pace with these demands. Hatta’s proposal for a National Ethics Court directly addresses this "enforcement gap."

Institutional Reactions and Challenges

While the proposal has been met with interest in academic and legal circles, it faces significant hurdles. Political analysts suggest that the creation of a National Ethics Court would require substantial legislative reform, likely necessitating amendments to existing laws that define the mandates of various commissions.

"The challenge is not the concept, but the power dynamics," noted one independent political observer. "Political parties are inherently protective of their autonomy. Creating a body that could potentially strip a party of its ability to discipline its own members without external interference will likely meet with resistance in the House of Representatives (DPR)."

However, proponents of the idea argue that the long-term benefit—the restoration of public trust—outweighs the political cost. If implemented, the court would require a diverse composition of members, including jurists, ethicists, and representatives of civil society, to ensure it does not become a tool for political weaponization.

The Path Forward: Education and Civil Society Engagement

The "Road to Campus" lecture series serves as a strategic platform for Hatta to socialize his vision. By engaging directly with students at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah, he is tapping into a demographic that has historically been the vanguard of reform movements in Indonesia. The goal is to build a grassroots movement for "ethical literacy" that pressures the political establishment to adopt stricter standards.

"We cannot wait for the politicians to reform themselves," Hatta said. "The impetus must come from the educated youth, who will eventually occupy these same positions of power. They must understand that politics is not just a mechanism for gaining power, but a mandate for ethical service."

Implications for Future Governance

Should the proposal for a National Ethics Court gain traction in the legislative agenda, it could fundamentally transform Indonesia’s political ecosystem. Potential implications include:

  1. Standardization of Conduct: The creation of a unified code of ethics that applies to all civil servants and elected officials, regardless of their institutional affiliation.
  2. Increased Public Accountability: A transparent mechanism for the public to report ethical grievances, with the assurance that they will be reviewed by an impartial, high-level tribunal.
  3. Professionalization of Politics: By making ethical conduct a requirement for career advancement, political parties may be forced to professionalize their internal training and vetting processes.
  4. Strengthening of Democracy: A reduction in corruption and maladministration, leading to a more efficient and effective government that better serves the public interest.

Conclusion

The call by Mohammad Hatta for a National Ethics Court marks a pivotal moment in the discourse on Indonesian governance. As the nation approaches the final quarter of the decade, the demand for institutional reform has never been more urgent. While the road to establishing such a court is fraught with political and legal complexity, the discussion initiated at UIN Jakarta provides a vital blueprint for a more ethical future.

The movement for a National Ethics Court represents a transition from a reactive model of governance—where ethics are addressed only after a scandal—to a proactive model, where ethical integrity is baked into the DNA of every state institution. Whether this proposal will translate into concrete legislation remains to be seen, but the debate it has ignited is undeniably essential for the health of Indonesia’s democratic future.

Revitalizing Indonesia’s Textile Industry: President Prabowo’s Strategic Push and the Critical Role of BPI Danantara in Economic Transformation

by Rifan Muazin
written by Rifan Muazin

The Indonesian government under the leadership of President Prabowo Subianto has embarked on an ambitious and comprehensive mission to revitalize the nation’s textile and garment manufacturing sector. This strategic push is designed not merely to rescue a legacy industry from structural decline, but to fundamentally reshape Indonesia’s broader manufacturing landscape, enhance global competitiveness, expand large-scale employment opportunities, and fortify national production capacities. The initiative unfolds against a complex backdrop of mounting global trade pressures, shifting international supply chains, volatile production costs, and changing consumer demands, all of which have converged to necessitate urgent technological modernization across the domestic industrial ecosystem.

The Historical Significance and Current Vulnerabilities of the Textile Sector

For decades, the textile and apparel sector has served as a cornerstone of Indonesia’s industrialization strategy. As one of the country’s earliest manufacturing segments to scale, it historically provided a vital pathway for integrating millions of workers—predominantly women—into the formal economy, moving them away from agrarian livelihoods and into urban manufacturing centers. Furthermore, the sector has traditionally been a significant net exporter, generating vital foreign exchange and fostering a complex web of supporting domestic industries, ranging from logistics and packaging to chemical processing and cotton farming.

However, in recent years, the sector has encountered severe structural headwinds. The rapid digitalization of global retail, coupled with intense price competition from overseas manufacturers operating with heavily subsidized energy and advanced automated infrastructure, has squeezed profit margins for Indonesian producers. Domestically, aging machinery—some of it dating back several decades—has constrained operational efficiency and limited the ability of local factories to meet stringent international quality and sustainability standards. Moreover, fluctuations in raw material prices, rising domestic minimum wages, and stringent regulatory frameworks have placed immense cost pressures on factory operators, leading in some instances to facility closures, capacity downsizing, and workforce layoffs.

Recognizing these vulnerabilities, the administration of President Prabowo has identified the textile industry as a critical testing ground for supply chain resilience. The overarching goal is to transition the sector away from low-cost, high-volume contract manufacturing toward higher-value-added segments, sustainable production practices, and advanced technical textiles. Achieving this transition requires coordinated policy interventions, targeted financial injections, and institutional alignment across multiple branches of government.

The Strategic Intervention of BPI Danantara

At the heart of the government’s financial mobilization strategy for the industrial sector is the newly established Badan Pengelola Investasi Daya Anagata Nusantara (BPI Danantara). Conceived as Indonesia’s sovereign super-holding investment agency, Danantara is designed to consolidate state-owned enterprise assets and direct strategic capital toward high-impact national development projects. In the context of the textile industry revitalization, Danantara’s involvement marks a departure from traditional, short-term bureaucratic subsidies toward long-term, value-driven equity investments.

Economic analysts and industry observers have closely scrutinized the mandate of Danantara under the leadership of CEO Rosan Roeslani. The agency’s strategic focus is expected to go beyond simply injecting emergency liquidity into struggling factories. Instead, Danantara’s deployment of capital is intended to catalyze structural reforms within targeted manufacturing operations, ensuring that state-backed investments yield measurable improvements in productivity, energy efficiency, and technological readiness.

Dr. Sarlina Sari, an academic and researcher from the Faculty of Economics and Business at Universitas Bina Sarana Informatika (UBSI), emphasizes that government intervention in the textile sector must be viewed through a macro-economic lens. According to Dr. Sarlina, a doctoral graduate from the prestigious Faculty of Economics and Business at Universitas Indonesia (FEB UI), the textile industry’s health is deeply intertwined with regional economic stability and domestic consumption patterns.

"Industri tekstil memiliki posisi penting dalam perjalanan industrialisasi Indonesia," Dr. Sarlina noted in a recent policy analysis statement. "Selain berkontribusi terhadap kegiatan produksi dan ekspor, sektor ini memiliki keterkaitan dengan penyerapan tenaga kerja, industri pendukung, serta aktivitas ekonomi di berbagai daerah." Translated to the broader economic context, the sector’s multiplier effect extends far beyond the factory floor, supporting small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that supply buttons, threads, dyes, and transport services.

Financial Mechanics and Investment Priorities

For BPI Danantara and its institutional partners, the primary challenge lies in structuring investments that generate sustainable returns while addressing the systemic deficits of the textile ecosystem. Financial experts point out that capital allocation must be strictly disciplined and performance-based.

According to Dr. Sarlina, investment in the textile industry should not be measured merely by the volume of capital disbursed, but by the tangible transformations it produces. "Investasi terhadap industri tekstil tidak cukup hanya diarahkan untuk meningkatkan kapasitas produksi," she stated. "Dukungan terhadap industri tekstil akan semakin berarti apabila diarahkan pada modernisasi teknologi, penguatan rantai pasok, peningkatan kualitas sumber daya manusia, dan pengembangan pasar ekspor."

This multi-pronged investment framework prioritizes several key areas:

  1. Technological Modernization and Digitalization: A significant portion of the capital must be earmarked for replacing outdated analog looms and sewing machines with computer-controlled, automated machinery. Industry 4.0 applications—such as Internet of Things (IoT) sensors for predictive maintenance, automated cutting systems, and digital inventory management—are essential for reducing waste, optimizing energy consumption, and lowering per-unit production costs.
  2. Supply Chain Integration: To reduce dependence on imported synthetic fibers and raw cotton, investments are needed to strengthen domestic upstream and midstream capabilities. Developing integrated textile parks that house spinning, weaving, dyeing, and garment-making facilities in close geographic proximity can drastically reduce logistics costs and lead times.
  3. Human Capital Development: Advanced machinery requires a skilled workforce. Investment programs must incorporate comprehensive vocational training initiatives in collaboration with educational institutions and industry associations. Workers must be trained in machine operation, quality control, apparel design software, and sustainable manufacturing protocols.
  4. Export Market Diversification and Value Addition: While traditional markets in North America and Western Europe remain crucial, Indonesian exporters must adapt to tightening environmental regulations, such as the European Union’s Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive and circular economy mandates. Investments should support the adoption of eco-friendly dyes, organic cotton processing, and certified sustainable production lines that appeal to conscious global consumers.

Broader Implications for Indonesia’s Manufacturing Sector

The revitalization of the textile industry under President Prabowo’s administration holds broader implications for Indonesia’s ambition to escape the middle-income trap and achieve advanced economy status by 2045. As global supply chains undergo continuous reconfiguration—driven by geopolitical tensions, trade diversification strategies, and the "China plus one" sourcing model—Indonesia possesses a unique window of opportunity to capture displaced manufacturing orders.

However, capturing this market share requires resolving long-standing structural bottlenecks that have historically plagued Indonesia’s ease of doing business rankings. High logistics costs, complex labor regulations, fragmented energy infrastructure, and non-tariff trade barriers have often deterred foreign direct investment (FDI) in labor-intensive manufacturing compared to regional neighbors like Vietnam and Bangladesh.

By deploying BPI Danantara as a strategic catalyst, the government aims to de-risk investments in the manufacturing sector, signalling to international institutional investors and private equity funds that Indonesia is serious about industrial upgrading. Furthermore, a successful turnaround in the textile sector could serve as a replicable blueprint for other labor-intensive manufacturing industries, such as footwear, furniture, and electronics assembly.

Looking Ahead: Implementation and Accountability

As the revitalization program transitions from policy formulation to ground-level implementation, monitoring and accountability mechanisms will be paramount. Industry stakeholders, labor unions, and economic analysts will be watching closely to ensure that state-backed funds achieve their intended targets without creating market distortions or moral hazards for inefficient corporate operators.

The alignment between the executive branch’s policy directives, Danantara’s investment execution capabilities, and the academic insights provided by institutions like UBSI and FEB UI underscores a collaborative approach to national economic planning. If executed with strategic precision, the modernization of Indonesia’s textile industry could secure millions of formal jobs, revitalize regional economies, and re-establish the nation as a formidable powerhouse in global textile and apparel manufacturing.

Earth has lost approximately 12.5 trillion tons of ice from Greenland and Antarctica since 1979 as the climate crisis accelerates

by Ali Ikhwan
written by Ali Ikhwan

The global cryosphere is undergoing a profound and unprecedented transformation, according to a landmark study published in the journal Scientific Data. The research, which synthesizes findings from 45 independent surveys and data from 27 satellites, reveals that the Earth’s two primary polar ice sheets—Greenland and Antarctica—have shed a staggering 12.5 trillion tons of ice over the past 45 years. This massive loss of glacial mass has contributed approximately 3.1 centimeters to the global sea-level rise, a figure that experts warn is independent of other climate-driven factors such as thermal expansion.

To visualize the sheer scale of this loss, consider that 12.5 trillion tons of ice, if spread evenly across the entire landmass of the United States, would create a layer of ice approximately 1.5 meters thick. This volume equates to nearly 3 quadrillion gallons, or 11.3 quadrillion liters, of freshwater being discharged into the world’s oceans, fundamentally altering salinity levels and ocean circulation patterns.

The Mechanism of Melt: Why the Ocean is the Primary Culprit

A common misconception regarding ice sheet decline is that rising atmospheric temperatures are the sole driver of loss. However, the study provides a critical clarification: approximately five-sixths of the total ice loss is not the result of direct solar radiation or warming air temperatures melting the surface. Instead, the primary driver is the warming of the global oceans.

Warmer deep-ocean currents are infiltrating the cavities beneath floating ice shelves. By eroding the ice from below, these currents destabilize the structural integrity of the glaciers, effectively "greasing the tracks" and accelerating the flow of ice from the interior of the continents into the sea. This process, known as basal melting, is a far more aggressive mechanism than surface melting.

Eric Rignot, a glaciologist at the University of California, Irvine, and a co-author of the study, emphasized that the implications of this process are global. "We are melting the polar regions, the sea level is rising worldwide, and it will exacerbate the vulnerability of coastal regions," Rignot stated. The scientific consensus is clear: the ice sheets are no longer in a state of equilibrium; they are shedding mass at a rate that is fundamentally changing the geography of our coastlines.

A Chronology of Acceleration: From Stability to Crisis

The data provided by the research team, led by Ines Otosaka of Northumbria University, offers a granular look at the temporal progression of the melt. During the 1970s, 1980s, and early 1990s, the ice sheets remained relatively stable, with minor fluctuations that stayed within historical norms. However, the turn of the millennium marked a tipping point.

By 2010, the rate of ice loss began to accelerate sharply. While there was a brief, localized slowdown between 2020 and 2023, researchers characterize this as a transient meteorological anomaly rather than a reversal of the long-term trend. Measurements taken in the subsequent months confirm that the acceleration has resumed, driven by the structural changes occurring within the major glaciers.

For instance, the Jakobshavn glacier in Greenland has become a poster child for this rapid retreat, currently experiencing rates of regression reaching up to 50 meters per day. This is not merely a seasonal occurrence; it is a long-term, dynamic retreat that is increasingly difficult to arrest.

The Human Cost: Every Centimeter Matters

The implications of sea-level rise are not just academic; they are a direct threat to global socioeconomic stability. Ines Otosaka points out that every 1-centimeter increase in global sea levels has the potential to expose an additional 2 to 3 million people to the risk of annual flooding. As the ocean encroaches on low-lying urban centers, the frequency and severity of storm surges, saltwater intrusion, and infrastructure damage are expected to intensify.

The economic burden of this encroachment is immense. Cities such as Jakarta, Miami, Bangkok, and Amsterdam face existential challenges as the "baseline" of the ocean creeps higher. With millions living in coastal zones, even a modest rise in sea level translates into billions of dollars in infrastructure investment required for sea walls, pumping stations, and, in some cases, managed retreat.

The Dynamic Nature of Polar Ice

The research highlights a significant concern: the process of ice loss is "dynamic," meaning it is fueled by the internal movement of ice rather than just thermal melting. David Holland, a glaciologist at New York University, has noted that this dynamic instability is particularly concerning because it is self-reinforcing. Once a glacier begins to accelerate, it creates a feedback loop that continues to draw more ice from the land into the sea, regardless of immediate fluctuations in air temperature.

In Antarctica, the situation is geographically complex. While the West Antarctic Ice Sheet is undergoing rapid, alarming losses, the East Antarctic Ice Sheet has, in some areas, seen an increase in snowfall, which acts as a minor buffer. However, scientists warn that this accumulation of snow is insufficient to compensate for the catastrophic loss occurring in the West and in Greenland.

Long-Term Inertia and the Climate Lag

One of the most unsettling findings of the study is the concept of "climate inertia." Even if global carbon emissions were halted today and the rise in global temperatures were successfully capped, the ice sheets would not immediately stop melting. There is a documented delay of several decades between atmospheric changes and the response of these massive, slow-moving ice bodies.

This means that the warming we have already committed to the planet is essentially "locked in," and the ice sheets will continue to respond to the heat already absorbed by the oceans for years to come. The researchers stress that this is not a temporary event or a natural cycle, but a sustained, human-induced trend that will define the coastal geography of the 21st and 22nd centuries.

Data Integrity and Future Projections

The use of 27 satellites, including those operated by NASA and the European Space Agency, has provided the most comprehensive and high-resolution view of the polar regions to date. By merging these disparate datasets, scientists have been able to extend the record of Antarctic ice volume back to 1979 and Greenland to 1972.

This retrospective view is vital for climate modeling. It allows researchers to distinguish between natural variability—such as the El Niño Southern Oscillation—and the anthropogenic forcing driving long-term trends. The consistency across these 45 independent surveys provides a high degree of confidence in the findings.

As the world looks toward the future, the data serves as a clear warning. The current trajectory of ice loss indicates that the sea-level rise of the coming decades will be dictated by the decisions made today regarding greenhouse gas emissions. The stability of the ice sheets is a global public good, and the current pace of their decline represents one of the most significant challenges to international security, urban planning, and environmental stability in modern history.

In summary, the transition of the polar ice sheets from stable, frozen reservoirs to dynamic contributors to sea-level rise is one of the most critical environmental developments of our era. With trillions of tons of ice lost and the rate of loss accelerating, the international scientific community continues to call for urgent, evidence-based policy interventions to mitigate the impacts of this inevitable, yet still manageable, global crisis. The findings published in Scientific Data confirm that while the ocean is the primary driver of this transformation, the solutions must be rooted in a global commitment to decarbonization and long-term coastal adaptation strategies.
