From Colonial Roots to Political Eclipse: The Rise, Fall, and Enduring Historiography of the Communist Party of Indonesia (PKI)

by Evan Lee Salim
written by Evan Lee Salim

The trajectory of the Communist Party of Indonesia (Partai Komunis Indonesia, or PKI) stands as one of the most complex, volatile, and heavily scrutinized chapters in modern Southeast Asian political history. Once functioning as a formidable force within the archipelago’s turbulent political landscape—boasting millions of adherents, extensive mass organizations, and significant parliamentary clout—the party’s existence was violently uprooted in the mid-1960s. Its formal dissolution and proscription in 1966 marked not only the eradication of organized domestic communism in Indonesia but also catalyzed a fundamental restructuring of the nation’s political architecture, paving the way for the authoritarian New Order regime under General Suharto.

The history of the PKI cannot be understood through a singular, isolated event. Rather, it unfolded across distinct historical phases: the early incubation of leftist ideology during the late Dutch colonial era, armed uprisings and ideological fracturing during the national revolution, a dramatic parliamentary resurgence under Guided Democracy in the 1950s and early 1960s, and a catastrophic collapse following the events of September 30, 1965. Decades after these watershed moments, the historiography of the PKI continues to evolve, drawing on declassified international archives, official state documents, and human rights investigations that continually refine how scholars, policymakers, and the public interpret the legacy of Indonesian communism.

Genesis of the Left: From Colonial Resistance to the Madiun Affair

The ideological roots of Indonesian communism trace back to the twilight years of the Dutch East Indies. In May 1914, European socialists and anti-colonial activists established the Indische Sociaal-Democratische Vereeniging (ISDV), or the Indies Social Democratic Association, under the leadership of figures like Henk Sneevliet. The ISDV initially sought to introduce Marxist-Leninist thought to the Dutch colony, infiltrating local nationalist movements such as Sarekat Islam to build a broader anti-colonial base.

By 1920, the organization underwent a metamorphosis, shedding its European-centric framing to become the Perserikatan Komunis di Hindia (PKH), later officially renamed the Partai Komunis Indonesia (PKI) in 1924. This made it the earliest communist party established outside of Europe and the Soviet Union. As the party matured, it increasingly clashed with the colonial administration. In 1926, emboldened by radical factions, the PKI launched a series of premature uprisings against Dutch colonial authorities in West Java and West Sumatra. The rebellions were poorly coordinated and quickly suppressed by the colonial security apparatus. The aftermath was devastating for the party: thousands of members and suspected sympathizers were arrested, exiled to the notorious Boven Digoel concentration camp in Papua, or driven deep underground, severely curtailing communist activity for the remainder of the Dutch colonial era and the subsequent Japanese occupation.

Following Indonesia’s declaration of independence in 1945, the PKI resurfaced rapidly, seeking to position itself at the vanguard of the anti-imperialist struggle. However, ideological and strategic fissures within the nascent republic soon erupted into open conflict. The most severe crisis of this early period occurred in September 1948 in Madiun, East Java. Amidst severe economic hardship, diplomatic concessions to the Dutch, and intense political polarization, leftist groups—including the PKI, the Socialist Party, and labor organizations operating under the umbrella of the People’s Democratic Front (FDR)—engaged in armed resistance against the republican government led by President Sukarno and Vice President Mohammad Hatta.

On September 18, 1948, leaders of the leftist coalition proclaimed the "Soviet Republic of Indonesia" in Madiun. The republican government, viewing the revolt as a treacherous stab in the back while the nation was fighting to secure its independence from the Netherlands, launched a swift and decisive military campaign. Within months, the rebellion was crushed. Key communist leaders, including Musso, were killed, and thousands of cadres were imprisoned. The Madiun Affair left deep, generational scars on the national consciousness, cementing an adversarial relationship between the Indonesian military, religious groups, and the domestic communist movement.

Parliamentary Resurgence and the 1955 General Election

Despite the catastrophic setback of the Madiun Affair, the PKI demonstrated remarkable organizational resilience. By the early 1950s, under the dynamic and pragmatic leadership of Dipa Nusantara (D.N.) Aidit, along with co-leaders Njoto, M.H. Lukman, and Sudisman, the party embarked on a massive internal restructuring. Abandoning the adventurist tactics that had doomed the Madiun uprising, the "Aidit leadership" pivoted toward legal, mass-based political mobilization.

The PKI systematically expanded its influence by organizing trade unions (such as SOBSI), peasant fronts (BTI), women’s organizations (Perwari/Gerwani), and youth groups. It championed popular agrarian reforms, land redistribution for impoverished tenant farmers, and anti-corruption campaigns, which struck a powerful chord among Indonesia’s rural and urban working classes.

This methodical grassroots organizing culminated in the watershed Indonesian legislative election of 1955—the nation’s first democratic parliamentary vote. According to official data from the General Elections Commission (KPU), the PKI secured an astonishing 6,179,914 votes, translating to 16.36 percent of the national vote share and yielding 39 seats in the People’s Representative Council (DPR). This placed the party fourth overall, trailing only the Indonesian National Party (PNI), Masyumi, and Nahdlatul Ulama (NU). In the subsequent elections for the Constituent Assembly, the party expanded its footprint further, capturing roughly 6.23 million votes and 80 seats. The election results irrefutably demonstrated that the PKI had successfully rehabilitated its image and transformed itself into an institutionalized, major political power within Indonesia’s parliamentary democracy.

The Guided Democracy Era and Nasakom

The mid-to-late 1950s witnessed chronic political instability, regional rebellions, and frequent cabinet collapses under the parliamentary system. Seizing upon this friction, President Sukarno issued a decree on July 5, 1959, dismantling the constitutional democracy and ushering in the era of "Guided Democracy." This political pivot concentrated executive authority within the presidency, backed by an uneasy alliance between Sukarno, the military, and the rapidly expanding leftist movement.

During this period, the PKI adeptly aligned itself with President Sukarno’s nationalist agenda. The party threw its full rhetorical and political weight behind Nasakom—an acronym coined by Sukarno representing the union of Nasionalisme (Nationalism), Agama (Religion), and Komunisme (Communism). By championing Nasakom, the PKI sought to legitimize its presence as an indispensable pillar of the Indonesian state, neutralizing ideological attacks from religious parties like Masyumi (which was subsequently banned in 1960).

By the early 1960s, the PKI’s influence within the corridors of power reached unprecedented heights. Its membership reportedly swelled into the millions, making it the largest communist party outside of the Soviet bloc and China. However, this unchecked expansion triggered severe anxieties among rival political forces, most notably the Indonesian Army (Angkatan Darat) and conservative Islamic organizations. The political climate grew increasingly toxic. Tensions escalated along multiple fronts: ideological debates over the direction of the state, intense land reform disputes in rural Java and Bali (known as aksi sepihak or unilateral actions), and foreign policy alignments, particularly Sukarno’s confrontational stance against Malaysia (Konfrontasi) and the PKI’s controversial proposal to arm a "Fifth Force" composed of peasants and workers alongside the official branches of the armed forces.

The 1965 Crisis and the Fall of the Left

The fragile political equilibrium shattered irrevocably on the night of September 30 and the early hours of October 1, 1965. A faction within the military, calling itself the September 30 Movement (Gerakan 30 September, or G30S) and led by Lieutenant Colonel Untung Syamsuri of the Tjakrabirawa presidential bodyguard, launched a coordinated operation in Jakarta. They abducted and subsequently murdered six high-ranking Army generals and one officer, dumping their bodies at a well in the Lubang Buaya area on the southern outskirts of the capital.

The immediate objective and true orchestration of G30S remain subjects of intense scholarly debate and historiographical divergence. The official narrative constructed by the subsequent New Order regime consistently maintained that the PKI was the singular mastermind behind the coup attempt, portraying it as a treacherous conspiracy to overthrow the legal government and establish a communist state. Conversely, alternative historical analyses—drawing on later declassified intelligence documents, academic studies, and international archives from the United States, Japan, and Western Europe—suggest a much more complex web of motivations, pointing to internal military factionalism, intelligence manipulations, and opportunistic maneuvering by various domestic and foreign actors.

Regardless of the precise culpability of the party apparatus as a whole, the political fallout for the left was swift and catastrophic. Major General Suharto, who quickly assumed operational control of the Army in the wake of the assassinations, moved decisively to crush the movement. The military initiated a nationwide crackdown against the PKI, its affiliated mass organizations, and anyone suspected of leftist sympathies.

What followed was one of the worst mass atrocities of the 20th century. Between late 1965 and 1966, an estimated 500,000 to over one million individuals were killed, while hundreds of thousands more were subjected to arbitrary mass detentions, systematic torture, sexual violence, forced labor, and lifelong internal exile without formal trial. Investigations by the Indonesian National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) have formally classified these sweeping atrocities as gross violations of human rights. The violence did not merely decapitate the PKI leadership; it devastated entire families and communities, leaving an enduring trauma that continues to cast a long shadow over Indonesian social and political life.

Legal Proscription and the Birth of the New Order

The political collapse of the PKI culminated in formal state actions that permanently altered Indonesia’s legal and constitutional landscape. On March 12, 1966, General Suharto—acting under the controversial executive powers conferred by the Supersemar (Surat Perintah Sebelas Maret)—issued a presidential decree formally banning the PKI and all of its associated mass organizations, declaring them illegal entities.

This executive decision was institutionalized at the legislative level a few months later through Decree of the Provisional People’s Consultative Assembly (TAP MPRS) No. XXV/MPRS/1966, enacted on July 5, 1966. The decree explicitly banned the PKI throughout the entire territory of the Republic of Indonesia and outlawed any activities aimed at propagating or developing the teachings of communism, Marxism, and Leninism. To this day, TAP MPRS No. XXV/1966 remains a foundational element of Indonesian statutory law, though contemporary legal scholars and human rights advocates frequently debate its implementation in relation to modern constitutional principles, democratic freedoms, and universal human rights standards.

The destruction of the PKI served as the death knell for Sukarno’s Guided Democracy. As the left was eradicated and Sukarno’s executive powers were systematically stripped away, Suharto consolidated his control. In March 1968, the MPRS formally appointed Suharto as the second President of the Republic of Indonesia, inaugurating the centralized, military-backed authoritarian regime known as the New Order (Orde Baru), which would govern the nation for over three decades until its collapse in 1998.

Contemporary Historiography and Legacy

More than half a century after the trauma of 1965, the history of the PKI remains a potent and sensitive touchstone in Indonesian public discourse. The narrative of the events is no longer monolithic; historians and archivists continually advocate for a more nuanced, multi-sourced approach to understanding the era.

Highlighting this ongoing process of historical inquiry, institutions such as the National Archives of Republic Indonesia (ANRI) have emphasized the necessity of examining diverse archival collections—spanning domestic repositories as well as declassified documents from the United States, Japan, and European nations—to construct a comprehensive, evidence-based account of the past. In doing so, modern historiography seeks to carefully delineate between documented historical facts, official state decrees of the past, and the ongoing academic interpretations that continue to animate discussions among historians.

Ultimately, the history of the Communist Party of Indonesia transcends the single, bloody crucible of October 1965. It represents a sweeping historical arc that began with the idealistic anti-colonial organizing of the early 20th century, survived severe repression and near-annihilation after the Madiun revolt in 1948, achieved remarkable democratic legitimacy through grassroots mobilization in the 1950s, and ended in catastrophic structural collapse under the pressures of the Cold War. For Indonesia, the legacy of the PKI and the tragedy of 1965 remains an essential, deeply complex cornerstone of national historical reflection—a reminder of the high costs of intense ideological polarization and the enduring imperative of safeguarding human rights, democracy, and the rule of law.

Prabowo Subianto Orders Immediate Correction of Regional Regulations Allowing Small-Scale Land Burning

by Evan Lee Salim
written by Evan Lee Salim

President Prabowo Subianto has issued a stern directive to local government officials, demanding the immediate revocation of eight regional regulations (Peraturan Daerah or Perda) that permit the burning of up to two hectares of land. During a high-level coordination meeting focused on the mitigation of forest and land fires (Karhutla) held at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Thursday, September 24, 2026, the President emphasized that such legal loopholes serve as primary catalysts for uncontrollable environmental disasters, particularly in vulnerable peatland regions.

The President’s instruction marks a significant shift in national policy, signaling a transition from localized, lenient agricultural practices toward a more centralized and uncompromising approach to environmental preservation. By labeling the existing regulations as both "nonsense" and "deceptive," the administration has signaled that the era of tolerating "small-scale" burning as a traditional farming method is coming to an end.

The Dangers of the Two-Hectare Loophole

For years, certain regional administrations in Indonesia have maintained regulations that allow local farmers to clear up to two hectares of land using fire, provided they notify local authorities and adhere to specific safety protocols. Proponents of these rules have historically argued that this provides smallholder farmers with a low-cost, effective method for land preparation.

Prabowo Geram Ada Perda Bolehkan Bakar Lahan 2 Hektare: Nonsanse, Ini Menipu!

However, President Prabowo challenged the logic behind this, noting that in the context of Indonesia’s geography—particularly the highly flammable peatlands—the notion of "controlled" burning is a fallacy. During the meeting, he posed a rhetorical question to the experts present: "If one person burns two hectares, how do you stop that fire? It is impossible for a single individual to contain a fire that quickly covers an area equivalent to a football field. It is logically inconsistent to permit an activity that carries such a high risk of systemic destruction."

The President’s assessment is supported by environmental scientists who point out that peatland fires do not merely burn the surface; they penetrate deep into the carbon-rich soil, creating underground hotspots that can smolder for weeks or months. These subterranean fires are notoriously difficult to extinguish, often resurfacing miles away from the initial site of ignition, which renders the "two-hectare limit" practically irrelevant once the blaze becomes established.

A Chronology of Escalating Concerns

The issue of Karhutla has been a recurring crisis in Indonesia, with significant spikes occurring throughout the 2020s. The timeline of this year’s crisis reflects the urgency behind the President’s recent statements:

  • Early August 2026: Meteorological services reported an early onset of the dry season, compounded by the Indian Ocean Dipole effect, leading to heightened fire risks across Kalimantan and Sumatra.
  • September 9, 2026: Authorities in Siak, Riau, successfully prosecuted four individuals for illegal land clearing, highlighting the ongoing tension between law enforcement and local agricultural practices.
  • September 13, 2026: The Head of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), Suharyanto, issued a public warning, urging citizens not to hide behind regional regulations to justify land burning, asserting that state-level environmental protection mandates supersede local ordinances.
  • September 23, 2026: A major scandal broke in Mempawah, where an elected member of the regional legislative council (DPRD) was linked to land clearing for palm oil cultivation via fire, triggering a police investigation and a public outcry.
  • September 24, 2026: President Prabowo convenes the emergency coordination meeting at the Presidential Palace, where he officially calls for the correction of the eight identified regency-level Perdas.

Supporting Data and Environmental Impact

The environmental stakes of this policy shift are immense. Indonesia holds some of the world’s largest tropical peatland carbon stocks. When these areas are burned, they release massive amounts of carbon dioxide, contributing significantly to global greenhouse gas emissions. According to satellite monitoring data from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, over 60% of fire hotspots detected in recent years have been traced back to areas where land clearing was being prepared for monoculture plantations, such as oil palm or timber.

Prabowo Geram Ada Perda Bolehkan Bakar Lahan 2 Hektare: Nonsanse, Ini Menipu!

While proponents of the current laws claim that smallholder farmers are being unfairly targeted, economic analysis suggests that the cumulative impact of thousands of "two-hectare fires" creates a regional haze that disrupts public health, aviation, and cross-border relations. During the 2015 and 2019 fire crises, the economic losses for Indonesia were estimated to be in the tens of billions of dollars, stemming from healthcare costs due to respiratory illnesses, school closures, and the loss of tourism and trade revenue.

Official Responses and Legal Challenges

The directive from President Prabowo places local governments in a difficult position. Regencies that have codified these burning practices into law must now navigate the legal process of repealing or amending their ordinances to align with national environmental standards.

Legal experts note that the hierarchy of laws in Indonesia dictates that local regulations cannot contradict national laws, including the Environmental Protection and Management Law. By identifying these eight specific Perdas, the President has essentially put these local administrations on notice. Failure to comply could lead to the central government taking direct administrative action, potentially through the Ministry of Home Affairs, which holds the authority to annul regional regulations that are deemed to be in violation of higher-level legislation or detrimental to the public interest.

The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) and the police have welcomed the President’s stance. For law enforcement agencies, the "two-hectare loophole" has long been a significant hurdle in prosecuting arsonists. Often, suspects would present the regional regulation as a defense in court, claiming their actions were authorized by local law, even if the fire spread far beyond their property boundaries. Clarifying that no such loophole exists will streamline the judicial process and provide police with the mandate to enforce a "zero-burning" policy across the archipelago.

Prabowo Geram Ada Perda Bolehkan Bakar Lahan 2 Hektare: Nonsanse, Ini Menipu!

Broader Implications for Sustainable Agriculture

The shift away from fire-based land clearing is expected to accelerate the government’s push for "Zero Burning" agricultural technology. The government has signaled that it intends to increase support for smallholders by providing access to mechanized clearing equipment and training in non-fire land preparation techniques.

However, the transition will not be without its challenges. Smallholder farmers often cite the high cost of manual labor and the unavailability of machinery as the primary reasons they rely on fire. Addressing the systemic causes of these fires requires more than just a change in regulation; it requires a robust economic strategy that makes sustainable farming more profitable and accessible than the "slash-and-burn" method.

As the government moves to strike down these eight Perdas, the focus will now shift to the implementation phase. Environmental NGOs have lauded the move as a long-overdue step toward fulfilling Indonesia’s climate commitments under the Paris Agreement. Yet, they caution that enforcement must be applied uniformly, ensuring that not only small-scale farmers but also large-scale plantation operators are held accountable for their role in the fire crisis.

President Prabowo’s firm stance marks a pivotal moment in Indonesia’s environmental governance. By removing the legal cover that has protected fire-based land clearing for years, the administration is betting that a stricter regulatory environment, combined with better support for sustainable farming, will finally break the cycle of seasonal haze that has plagued the nation for decades. The coming months will be a test of how effectively these central directives can be translated into action at the regency level, and whether the country can finally move toward a fire-free future for its vital peatland ecosystems.

Flashback to the Past: Why Sara Wijayanto Chose Demian Aditya as Her Life Partner Amidst Divorce Proceedings at the South Jakarta Religious Court

by Reynand Wu
written by Reynand Wu

The unexpected announcement of divorce proceedings between prominent Indonesian celebrity figures Sara Wijayanto and Demian Aditya has sent ripples through the entertainment industry, prompting a widespread public reassessment of their decade-long relationship. Legal documentation confirms that Sara Wijayanto has officially filed for divorce from her husband at the South Jakarta Religious Court, marking a definitive turning point for a marriage that had long been perceived by fans as steadfast and enduring. As the legal proceedings move forward, public attention has inevitably drifted backward, unearthing archival interviews and foundational moments that defined the early stages of their romance. Among the most discussed retrospective materials is an appearance the couple made approximately twelve years ago on a popular television talk show, where they openly detailed the psychological and emotional underpinnings that led them to commit to one another. This deep dive into their past not only highlights the stark contrast between their historical narrative and their current legal reality, but also provides a comprehensive view of the complexities that characterized their high-profile union from its inception.

The Chronology of a High-Profile Romance and Legal Transition

To understand the weight of the current legal developments, one must examine the timeline of Sara Wijayanto and Demian Aditya’s relationship. Their romance initially blossomed amidst intense media scrutiny, largely due to the circumstances surrounding Demian’s high-profile separation from his previous marriage. Despite public skepticism and external pressure, Sara and Demian solidified their bond, eventually marrying in a private yet widely covered ceremony more than ten years ago. Throughout their marriage, the couple cultivated an image of mutual support, frequently appearing together in media engagements, paranormal-themed digital content, and talk shows where they discussed the harmony they had achieved.

The first major indication of distress in paradise emerged in late September 2026, when official records from the South Jakarta Religious Court revealed that Sara Wijayanto had initiated formal divorce proceedings against Demian Aditya. The filing immediately galvanized media outlets and public interest groups, transforming the couple from a symbol of matrimonial endurance into the center of a developing entertainment news cycle. As court dates are scheduled and legal representatives prepare for subsequent hearings, both parties have maintained a relatively measured public posture, though the reverberations of the split continue to dominate cultural discourse across Indonesian media platforms.

Foundational Commitments: Why Sara Wijayanto Chose Demian Aditya

During their aforementioned appearance on the talk show Okay Bos, which has recently resurfaced across digital platforms, Sara Wijayanto provided deep insight into her decision to choose Demian Aditya as her definitive life partner. At the core of her decision was Demian’s unique capacity to navigate her complex emotional landscape. Sara, widely known in the entertainment sphere for her intuitive and multifaceted personality, emphasized that emotional volatility and eccentricity were traits she possessed, which required a partner possessing exceptional patience and emotional equilibrium.

"He is so sweet, you know. He knows how to calm my emotions and all my eccentricities, especially when my moods swing," Sara recounted during the archived interview, which was broadcast on Friday, September 25, 2026, as the archival footage gained renewed traction. Beyond his ability to manage her emotional fluctuations, Sara pointed to a deeper psychological synergy between them. She noted that she played an instrumental role in helping Demian process and overcome the profound emotional trauma stemming from his previous marital dissolution. Healing from a heavily publicized public separation is rarely straightforward, and Sara believed her presence offered Demian the safe harbor necessary to rebuild his trust in romantic partnerships. "Healing someone’s trauma from a past relationship is never easy. Not everyone can accept that kind of baggage as a normal part of building a future, but we navigated that together," she added.

Demian Aditya’s Perspective on Hesitation and Vulnerability

Conversely, Demian Aditya has been equally transparent in past media engagements regarding his initial reluctance to enter into another serious commitment. Before crossing paths with Sara Wijayanto, the illusionist and television personality harbored deep-seated doubts about whether he possessed the emotional capacity to rebuild a traditional marital structure. The psychological toll of his past separation had left him guarded, skeptical of domestic permanence, and hesitant to invest emotionally in a new relationship.

However, those misgivings dissipated as his connection with Sara deepened. Demian noted that the organic progression of their relationship dismantled his skepticism, transforming hesitation into absolute certainty. "I used to wonder if I could ever truly commit to someone again in a serious way," Demian confessed during the historical broadcast. "But the moment I got to know her properly, all those doubts vanished. I knew right then and there: she is the one. I realized, ‘Ah, she is going to be my wife.’"

Furthermore, Demian openly discussed the dynamics of jealousy within their dynamic, attributing his protective instincts to the arduous journey required to win her affection. Because Sara was a prominent public figure surrounded by persistent media attention and public scrutiny during the early stages of their romance, securing her heart was far from simple. "I was extremely jealous at times because it was so difficult to win her over, especially with all the public criticism and judgment we faced back then," Demian explained. "Yet, despite all of that, the way she handled things made me fall in love with her more and more every single day."

Broader Implications and Industry Reactions

The dissolution of a marriage that has spanned over a decade inevitably generates significant cultural and industry-wide implications. In the context of the Indonesian entertainment landscape, long-standing celebrity marriages are frequently viewed by the public as benchmarks of stability. When unions of this magnitude dissolve, they prompt broader conversations regarding the private realities behind public personas. Industry analysts and entertainment psychologists note that high-profile couples often face compounding pressures—ranging from relentless media surveillance to the inherent difficulties of maintaining personal equilibrium under public spotlights.

While neither Sara Wijayanto nor Demian Aditya has issued an exhaustive public manifesto detailing the precise catalysts for the current divorce filing, legal experts anticipate that the proceedings at the South Jakarta Religious Court will progress through standard mediation phases before addressing asset division and formal legal separation. The peaceful demeanor maintained by both parties thus far suggests an intention to navigate the separation with a degree of discretion, mitigating the potential for sensationalized media conflicts.

Conclusion and Future Outlook

The resurfacing of Sara Wijayanto and Demian Aditya’s historical statements serves as a poignant reminder of the ideals upon which their marriage was built. From navigating past traumas and emotional volatility to overcoming public skepticism, their journey together was characterized by profound mutual reliance. As the legal reality of their divorce unfolds at the South Jakarta Religious Court, the public narrative has shifted from celebration of their romance to an acknowledgment of the fragile nature of long-term relationships, regardless of how solidly they appear to be constructed. Moving forward, the primary focus for both individuals will undoubtedly center on concluding the legal proceedings amicably while navigating their respective professional and personal futures independently.

IHSG Hari Ini Ditutup ke Zona Merah pada Sesi Terakhir Perdagangan Usai Melemah 56,72 Poin ke Level 6.241

by Raul Delapena Setiawan
written by Raul Delapena Setiawan

The Jakarta Composite Index (IHSG) concluded the final trading session of the week on Friday, September 25, 2026, in negative territory. The index experienced a notable contraction, shedding 56.72 points or 0.90%, to settle at the 6,241 level. This retreat reflects a broader sense of caution permeating the Indonesian capital market as investors grapple with shifting macroeconomic indicators and global volatility that have increasingly influenced domestic sentiment throughout the third quarter of 2026.

Market breadth on this particular Friday was significantly tilted toward the downside. Out of the total securities traded, 587 stocks recorded price declines, dwarfing the 122 stocks that managed to secure gains. Meanwhile, 254 stocks remained stagnant, reflecting a lack of buying conviction among institutional and retail participants. The total volume of shares traded reached 26.2 billion, with a total transaction value amounting to Rp9.3 trillion, indicating a high level of liquidity despite the bearish trend.

Breakdown of Major Indices and Sectoral Performance

The downward momentum was not confined to the main index but was broadly mirrored across major benchmark indices. The LQ45 index, which tracks the 45 most liquid stocks on the Indonesia Stock Exchange, retreated by 0.34% to 621. Similarly, the Jakarta Islamic Index (JII) saw a more pronounced decline of 0.92%, closing at 372. Other key indicators also succumbed to selling pressure, with the IDX30 index falling 0.33% to 344, and the MNC36 index sliding 0.44% to 269.

The sectoral performance was arguably the most telling indicator of the day’s sentiment. A comprehensive sell-off was observed across almost every major sector. Energy, consumer non-cyclicals, financials, property, raw materials, transportation, industrial, consumer cyclicals, infrastructure, healthcare, and technology sectors all closed in the red. The synchronicity of these declines suggests that the selling pressure was not driven by sector-specific news, but rather by a systematic withdrawal of capital or a rebalancing of portfolios by major investors heading into the weekend.

Top Performers and Laggards Amid Market Volatility

Despite the pervasive bearish environment, specific stocks managed to buck the trend, providing pockets of opportunity for traders. PT Martina Berto Tbk (MBTO) emerged as a standout, registering a significant gain of 34.64% to close at Rp206. This was followed by the Reksa Dana Syariah Indeks Simas ETF JII, which climbed 32.81% to reach Rp85. Additionally, PT Hotel Sahid Jaya International Tbk (SHID) recorded a strong performance, appreciating by 24.83% to finish the session at Rp905.

Conversely, the list of top losers highlighted the severity of the downward correction for certain mid-cap and small-cap stocks. PT Citatah Tbk (CTTH) and PT Wahana Inti Makmur Tbk (NASI) both faced heavy selling, with each shedding 14.96% to close at Rp108 and Rp199, respectively. PT Olympus Strategic Indonesia Tbk (NATO) also faced significant downward pressure, declining 14.92% to settle at Rp1,055. These movements underscore the heightened volatility currently characterizing the secondary tier of the Indonesian stock market.

Contextualizing the Market Sentiment

The performance of the IHSG on this Friday serves as a continuation of a volatile week. Earlier in the week, the index had shown signs of resilience, even opening higher at 6,315 on previous sessions, but the failure to maintain those levels suggests a lack of sustained buying support. Market analysts point to several factors that may have contributed to this decline. Global inflationary pressures, uncertainty regarding central bank interest rate policies, and fluctuations in commodity prices—which remain a critical pillar of the Indonesian economy—have all contributed to a "wait-and-see" approach among investors.

The psychological threshold of the 6,300 level has proved difficult for the index to consolidate above. When the market fails to break through resistance levels, it often triggers algorithmic stop-loss orders, which exacerbates the decline. Furthermore, as we approach the end of the third quarter, institutional investors often engage in "window dressing" or profit-taking to secure gains before the quarter-end reporting period, which can lead to increased turnover and price volatility.

Economic Implications and Future Outlook

The decline of the IHSG to 6,241 raises pertinent questions regarding the short-term outlook for the Indonesian equity market. While the domestic economy has shown signs of recovery in various sectors, the stock market remains highly sensitive to global liquidity conditions. If the current trend of outflows continues, it may signal that foreign investors are rotating capital toward more stable or higher-yielding markets in the region or in developed economies.

From a macroeconomic perspective, the broad-based decline in sectors such as finance and infrastructure is particularly noteworthy. As these sectors are closely tied to domestic economic growth and infrastructure development, their underperformance may reflect concerns regarding the pace of national economic expansion or potential headwinds in consumer spending. However, it is essential to view these daily fluctuations within the context of long-term economic cycles. Indonesia’s fundamentals—including a young demographic dividend, a robust commodity export sector, and ongoing digital transformation—remain intact despite temporary market corrections.

Reactions from Market Observers

While official statements from market regulators regarding specific daily moves are rare, financial analysts generally view such corrections as a necessary recalibration. Market observers note that the high number of stocks declining (587) compared to those gaining (122) is indicative of a market-wide correction rather than isolated incidents.

"The market is currently testing its support levels," remarked a senior analyst in Jakarta. "Investors are cautious, and the lack of a strong catalyst to drive the index higher has left it vulnerable to external pressures. However, the high transaction value of Rp9.3 trillion suggests that there is still significant participation and that the market remains liquid, which is a positive sign for the long term."

Strategy for Investors in a Bearish Climate

For retail investors, the current market environment necessitates a shift in strategy. With the index failing to hold key levels, risk management becomes paramount. Diversification across sectors that have shown relative stability, such as healthcare or select consumer staples, may help mitigate the impact of broad market declines. Additionally, investors are advised to focus on companies with strong balance sheets and consistent dividend payouts, as these stocks tend to be more resilient during periods of market uncertainty.

The events of September 25, 2026, will likely be analyzed in the coming week to determine if the 6,241 level will serve as a stable floor or if further testing of lower support levels is expected. As global markets continue to grapple with inflationary concerns and geopolitical shifts, the IHSG is likely to remain in a state of flux. Investors should keep a close watch on key economic data releases, including inflation reports and trade balance figures, which are expected to dictate the trajectory of the market in the fourth quarter.

In conclusion, the IHSG’s closing at 6,241 after a 0.90% decline marks a challenging end to the week. While the red ink across the boards may appear concerning, it is part of the ongoing evolution of the Indonesian capital market. Whether this represents a short-term dip or the start of a more sustained correction will depend on upcoming corporate earnings reports and the ability of the market to regain confidence in the face of prevailing macroeconomic challenges. For now, the market remains in a consolidation phase, with eyes firmly fixed on the next wave of economic data to provide direction for the months ahead.

In a profound demonstration of global Islamic solidarity, more than 40 grand imams from across the world converged at the Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta to lead a collective prayer for the unity of the Muslim community and the protection of the Al Aqsa Mosque. This spiritual gathering, held immediately following Friday prayers, served as a poignant centerpiece of the International Grand Imam Conference (IGIC) 2026, an assembly dedicated to addressing the most pressing issues of global peace, humanitarian crises, and the role of religious leadership in fostering international harmony.

Led by Ahmad Al Showi, a distinguished lecturer from Egypt’s Al-Azhar University, the congregation reverberated with a unified plea for strength, guidance, and reconciliation. The prayer specifically invoked divine intervention to bridge the ideological and political divides that have fragmented the global Muslim population, emphasizing a return to common values and collective resilience.

The Context of the International Grand Imam Conference 2026

The IGIC 2026 represents a landmark moment in modern interfaith and intra-faith diplomacy. Hosted in Jakarta, the capital of the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation, the conference serves as a strategic platform for religious scholars and leaders to deliberate on the challenges of the 21st century. The event, which has drawn participants from diverse geopolitical landscapes, focuses on three primary pillars: social cohesion, the mitigation of humanitarian crises, and the advocacy for the sanctity of holy sites.

The selection of Jakarta as the host city is symbolic. Indonesia, known for its constitutional commitment to an independent and active foreign policy, has consistently positioned itself as a mediator in global conflicts, particularly regarding the rights of the Palestinian people. The presence of international grand imams at the Istiqlal Mosque—a symbol of national pride and religious tolerance—underscores the importance of Indonesia’s moral influence on the global stage.

A Chronology of the Gathering and Collective Prayer

The proceedings on Friday followed a structured agenda that began with the Friday congregational prayer (Jumu’ah), which saw a massive turnout of both delegates and local worshipers. Upon the conclusion of the prayer, the assembly of grand imams took the pulpit to lead the special invocation.

The prayer, delivered by Ahmad Al Showi, was marked by its intensity and focus on three distinct areas:

  1. Unity of the Ummah: A request for divine guidance to mend the fractures within the Muslim world and to strengthen the collective resolve of its people.
  2. Leadership and Accountability: A plea for the leaders of Muslim-majority nations to be granted the wisdom to govern with justice and to be surrounded by advisors who champion truth and human welfare.
  3. The Sovereignty of Al Aqsa: A central petition for the protection and restoration of the Al Aqsa Mosque, asking for the facilitation of peaceful access for all believers to practice their faith in the sacred site.

The session was not merely a ritual but a deliberate act of public diplomacy. By recording these prayers in the presence of international media and government officials, the participants aimed to bring the issue of Al Aqsa back to the forefront of the global human rights discourse.

Official Statements and Diplomatic Stance

The spiritual proceedings were bolstered by firm political statements from the Indonesian government. Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar, speaking to the media alongside high-ranking Palestinian representatives, reiterated the nation’s unwavering commitment to the Palestinian cause.

"Indonesia will always and forever stand with Palestine," Minister Umar declared. His statement came during a high-level bilateral meeting with the Grand Mufti of Al Quds and Imam of the Al Aqsa Mosque, Syekh Muhammad Hussein, and the Advisor to the President of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Al-Habbash.

This diplomatic exchange highlights the "soft power" strategy employed by the Indonesian government. By hosting such influential figures, Jakarta reinforces its status as a reliable ally to the Palestinian people, utilizing the moral authority of religious leaders to amplify their political grievances on a global platform. The dialogue between Minister Umar and the Palestinian delegates touched upon the necessity of utilizing religious rhetoric to promote environmental stewardship and social harmony—two additional themes highlighted throughout the IGIC 2026.

Data and Implications: The Role of Mosques in Peacebuilding

The focus on Al Aqsa is not coincidental. Data from various international monitoring bodies suggest that the status of holy sites in occupied territories remains a primary flashpoint for regional instability. By centering the discussion on the "freedom of worship," the IGIC 2026 aims to reframe the conflict in a language that transcends purely political or territorial disputes, appealing instead to the universal human right of religious freedom.

The conference also serves as a workshop for "moderate religious discourse." In an era where extremist narratives often dominate the digital landscape, the collective voice of 40-plus grand imams acts as a counterweight. The conference organizers emphasized that mosques must function as centers of harmony, education, and community support, rather than being repurposed for political radicalization.

The Generational Dimension of the Appeal

One of the most notable aspects of the Friday prayer was its focus on intergenerational legacy. The invocation included a specific request that if the current generation is unable to see the restoration of peace and freedom in Al Aqsa, the hope for such a resolution should be passed down to the youth. This acknowledgment of the "long game" in diplomacy reflects a realistic understanding of the geopolitical obstacles in the Middle East. It serves to sustain the momentum of the movement, ensuring that the advocacy for justice is not a fleeting trend but a core pillar of the faith for future generations.

Analyzing the Impact of the Jakarta Declaration

The IGIC 2026 is expected to conclude with a "Jakarta Declaration," a document that will likely codify the principles discussed during the assembly. While the declaration is not legally binding in an international court, its political weight is significant.

  1. Global Legitimacy: By garnering the consensus of religious scholars from disparate schools of thought, the declaration provides a unified moral framework that governments can cite when advocating for Palestinian rights in forums like the United Nations or the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
  2. Harmonizing Religious Law with Modern Governance: The conference has provided a rare venue for scholars to discuss how traditional Islamic jurisprudence can address modern crises, such as the humanitarian impacts of warfare and the displacement of civilian populations.
  3. Counter-Radicalization: By promoting a collective identity that prioritizes peace and justice, the conference undermines the messaging of extremist groups that often attempt to exploit the despair of displaced populations.

Broader Implications for Global Stability

The gathering at Istiqlal Mosque signifies a shift in how religious institutions engage with global politics. Rather than remaining isolated within the confines of theology, the grand imams are actively utilizing their positions to demand accountability and justice for systemic injustices.

The implications of this summit are twofold. First, it places renewed pressure on international actors to address the status of Jerusalem and the surrounding holy sites, as the issue is now being championed by a unified, global coalition of religious leaders. Second, it reaffirms Indonesia’s leadership role in the global Muslim community. By successfully hosting an event of this scale and sensitivity, Jakarta has demonstrated its ability to facilitate complex diplomatic dialogues, bridging the gap between spiritual ideals and political realities.

As the IGIC 2026 draws to a close, the resonance of the prayers recited by Ahmad Al Showi continues to linger. The call for unity, the protection of sacred sites, and the plea for divine guidance for world leaders serve as a reminder that even in the face of deep-seated conflict, the pursuit of justice remains a binding force that transcends borders and cultures. Whether these prayers will lead to tangible shifts in international policy remains to be seen, but the event itself has undeniably strengthened the narrative of solidarity that characterizes the current Indonesian approach to global affairs.

Through the careful orchestration of this conference, the organizers have succeeded in elevating the discourse surrounding the Al Aqsa Mosque from a regional conflict to a matter of global moral concern, ensuring that the plight of those in the region remains at the forefront of the international consciousness. The legacy of this assembly will likely be measured by the continued efforts of these 40 leaders to implement the principles of peace and harmony within their own respective nations, creating a ripple effect that could influence the trajectory of global religious discourse for years to come.

FEKDI x IFSE 2026, Indodax Soroti Penguatan Ekosistem Kripto Nasional

by Jia Lissa
written by Jia Lissa

The landscape of digital finance in Indonesia has reached a pivotal inflection point as the nation transitions from early adoption to a mature phase of integration within the broader financial system. According to the latest data from the Financial Services Authority (OJK), the number of crypto asset consumers in Indonesia surged to 22.93 million accounts by July 2026. This significant user base facilitated a staggering trading volume of approximately IDR 171.12 trillion between January and July 2026 alone, signaling that digital assets have moved from a niche investment class to a mainstream component of the national financial architecture.

This exponential growth served as a primary focus at the Festival Ekonomi Keuangan Digital Indonesia (FEKDI) x Indonesia Fintech Summit & Expo (IFSE) 2026. The summit, which serves as the premier annual convergence of regulators, financial technology innovators, and digital talent, provided a platform to deliberate on the future trajectory of Indonesia’s digital economy. As the sector matures, the focus has shifted from mere proliferation of access to the critical need for robust regulatory frameworks, consumer protection, and the mitigation of risks associated with illegal platforms.

The Evolution of Indonesia’s Crypto Landscape: A Chronological Overview

The Indonesian crypto ecosystem has undergone a rapid transformation over the past five years. Following the initial surge of retail interest in 2021 and 2022, the government moved to formalize the sector. In 2023, the responsibility for overseeing crypto assets was transitioned to the OJK, signaling a shift toward treating digital assets with the same regulatory rigor as traditional financial instruments.

By 2024, the establishment of the Commodity Futures Trading Regulatory Agency (Bappebti) protocols, working in tandem with OJK oversight, began to prune the market of non-compliant players. The first half of 2026 has been defined by the successful integration of tokenization experiments within the regulatory sandbox, allowing for the legal testing of blockchain-based real-world assets. The current data reflects that while trading activity remains high, the composition of the market is shifting toward institutional interest and more sophisticated retail participation, moving away from the speculative volatility that characterized the industry’s early years.

Insights from Industry Leaders: Addressing the Risks of Illegal Platforms

During the panel discussion regarding the risks of unlicensed digital financial service providers (PAKD), William Sutanto, Chief Executive Officer of Indodax and Secretary General of the Indonesian Blockchain Association (ABI), emphasized that the scale of current participation necessitates a proactive approach to ecosystem security.

"The crypto industry possesses immense economic potential and continues to evolve at a breakneck pace," Sutanto stated during the summit. "Because crypto assets are inherently borderless, users are often tempted to access international exchanges that may not adhere to local regulatory standards. Our challenge is to foster an environment where local ecosystems remain not only competitive but also structurally sound, ensuring that the benefits of blockchain technology accrue to the Indonesian economy and protect the retail investor."

Sutanto’s remarks highlight a critical tension in modern digital finance: the conflict between global accessibility and national jurisdictional oversight. To combat the proliferation of illegal platforms, he proposed a tripartite strategy involving enhanced public literacy, the creation of a level playing field, and the institutionalization of the role of crypto exchanges as a bridge between the public and the regulator.

Regulatory Perspectives: From Experimentation to Economic Utility

The sentiment regarding the maturity of the sector was echoed by Friderica Widyasari Dewi, Chairperson of the Board of Commissioners at OJK. During the summit, she underscored that the regulatory mandate for the next fiscal period is to ensure that digital financial innovations move beyond the experimental phase and contribute meaningfully to the real economy.

"Innovation in the digital financial sector should serve as a primary engine for our national financial system," Dewi noted. To support this, the OJK has expanded its regulatory sandbox, which currently facilitates the testing of high-impact financial products. These include, but are not limited to, the tokenization of gold, government securities (SBN), real estate, stablecoins, and the development of digital asset custodianship.

This move toward tokenizing real-world assets is particularly significant. By bridging the gap between blockchain technology and physical assets, the OJK is attempting to lower the barrier to entry for diverse investment vehicles, potentially increasing financial inclusion in rural areas where traditional brokerage services remain difficult to access.

Fact-Based Analysis: Implications for the Indonesian Economy

The transition of crypto assets into the regulated sphere carries several profound implications for Indonesia’s macroeconomic stability:

  1. Financial Inclusion and Literacy: With 22.93 million accounts, the potential for using blockchain for identity verification and credit scoring is immense. However, this growth necessitates a commensurate increase in financial literacy to prevent the systemic risks associated with retail participation in high-volatility assets.
  2. Regulatory Arbitrage: The "borderless" nature of crypto remains a primary challenge for the OJK. As domestic platforms become more heavily regulated, there is a risk that users may flock to offshore, unregulated exchanges. The government’s strategy to create a competitive "level playing field" is essential to retain domestic capital within the Indonesian tax and regulatory ecosystem.
  3. The Shift Toward Tokenization: The successful integration of SBN tokenization into the regulatory sandbox suggests that Indonesia is preparing for a future where government debt is traded on-chain. This would increase liquidity for state-issued securities and modernize the secondary market, providing the government with more efficient tools for fiscal management.
  4. Consumer Protection: As illegal platforms continue to target unsuspecting users through social media and unregulated marketing, the OJK’s role in identifying and shutting down these entities becomes a matter of national interest. The collaboration between the ABI and the OJK is designed to act as an early-warning system for fraudulent schemes.

The Path Forward: Building a Resilient Digital Infrastructure

As FEKDI x IFSE 2026 concludes, the consensus among policymakers and industry stakeholders is clear: the era of "wild west" crypto growth is ending in Indonesia. The next phase will be characterized by institutionalization, where the focus will be on the safety of the infrastructure rather than just the volume of transactions.

The industry’s focus on "Level Playing Field" policies suggests that future regulations will likely prioritize high barriers to entry for service providers, ensuring that only those with strong capital reserves and security protocols can operate. For consumers, this implies a safer environment, though perhaps one with more stringent identity verification (KYC) requirements.

Furthermore, the integration of crypto-asset funds and stablecoins into the regulated landscape indicates that Indonesia is positioning itself to be a regional leader in the digital financial space. By moving away from purely speculative tokens and toward asset-backed digital instruments, Indonesia is creating a template for how emerging economies can harness blockchain technology to drive industrial and infrastructure growth.

Conclusion

The data presented at the 2026 summit serves as a reminder that digital finance is no longer an ancillary part of the Indonesian economy; it is a central pillar. With over 22 million users and hundreds of trillions of rupiah in transaction volume, the sector has grown beyond the ability of any single entity to manage alone. The synergy between the OJK’s regulatory oversight and the industry’s drive for innovation, as exemplified by the leadership at Indodax and the ABI, will determine the resilience of the nation’s digital financial future. As the government continues to refine its regulatory sandbox and implement stricter oversight of unlicensed providers, the Indonesian public is expected to benefit from a more secure, efficient, and inclusive digital financial landscape that aligns with the nation’s long-term economic objectives.

Banten Governor Andra Soni Visits Family of Missing iNews Journalist Yudistiro Pranoto in Depok to Offer Solace and Support

by Nana Muazin
written by Nana Muazin

Banten Governor Andra Soni paid a compassionate visit to the family residence of missing iNews journalist Yudistiro Pranoto, located in the Nuansa Asri residential complex in Cinangka, Sawangan, Depok, West Java, on Friday afternoon, September 25, 2026. Arriving at approximately 13.30 Western Indonesia Time (WIB), the Governor sought to provide direct moral support, strength, and encouragement to the grieving and anxious family members who have endured an agonizing period of uncertainty following the sudden disappearance of the prominent reporter.

The high-profile visit underscores the deep bonds within the professional and public service communities, highlighting the profound emotional toll that operational risks in journalism impose on families. Governor Andra Soni was accompanied by several key regional officials from the Banten Provincial Government, including the Head of the Administrative Bureau for Leadership (Adpim) Arif Agus Rakhman, Head of the Social Service Office (Dinsos) Lukman, Chief Executive of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) Lutfi Mujahidin, and the Head of the Education and Culture Office (Dindikbud) Jamaludin.

Upon arrival, the gubernatorial entourage was warmly received by Head of News Gathering for iNews Media Group Lukman Hanafi, alongside Yudis’s steadfast wife, Rodiyah Nasution, and their two young sons, Kenzie Hafizan Pranoto and Karel Hamizan Pranoto. The delegation spent over an hour engaging in heartfelt conversations with the family, offering prayers for Yudistiro Pranoto’s safe return and reassuring his wife and children that the broader community, state apparatus, and media industry stand firmly beside them during this unprecedented crisis.

Context and Chronology of the Disappearance

The disappearance of Yudistiro Pranoto has gripped both the national media landscape and regional authorities since reports first emerged regarding his sudden loss of contact while on assignment. As an experienced field journalist for iNews, Yudis has long been known for his dedication to covering challenging stories, often venturing into remote or high-risk locations to deliver accurate reporting to the public. However, the nature of his latest assignment took a harrowing turn, leading to an extensive search and rescue (SAR) operation that has mobilized various state agencies, private entities, and grieving family members alike.

In the days following his disappearance, search efforts have extended across perilous geographic expanses, most notably reaching coastal and maritime zones such as Sertung Island—part of the Krakatoa archipelago in the Sunda Strait. The sheer scale of the operation reflects the high regard in which Yudis is held by his colleagues and superiors alike. Rodiyah Nasution, demonstrating extraordinary resolve, even took the heartbreaking step of personally joining search teams on expeditions to remote locations like Pulau Sertung, driven by an unwavering maternal and spousal determination to locate her husband.

The collaborative nature of the search involves joint forces from the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), the Indonesian Navy, local marine police units, and volunteer maritime communities. Despite challenging weather conditions, unpredictable ocean currents, and rugged terrain characteristic of the Sunda Strait region, search teams have continued to comb coastal areas, dense vegetation, and surrounding waters in hopes of finding viable leads.

Official Responses and Solidarity from Regional Government

During his visit to the Depok residence, Governor Andra Soni emphasized the critical role that journalists play in shaping democratic society and keeping the public informed. He noted that public servants and state officials share a profound moral obligation to support members of the press, especially when disaster or tragedy strikes those who dedicate their lives to public information.

"We are here today not only as representatives of the Banten Provincial Government but as fellow human beings to extend our deepest sympathies and unwavering support to the family of Yudistiro Pranoto," Governor Andra Soni stated during his interaction with the family. "Yudis has been an exemplary professional whose dedication to his craft is commendable. We pray steadfastly for his safety, and we assure his family that they are not alone in this difficult hour."

The presence of high-ranking Banten officials—including the heads of disaster management, social services, and educational administration—indicates a coordinated approach to ensuring that the family’s immediate psychological, social, and administrative needs are fully supported. BPBD Kalaksa Lutfi Mujahidin, leveraging his agency’s expertise in emergency operations, has maintained close communication with federal and local SAR coordinators to stay updated on the latest developments in the search grid. Meanwhile, Dindikbud Head Jamaludin ensured that educational continuity and emotional safeguarding for Yudis’s young sons, Kenzie and Karel, remain a priority amid the ongoing household crisis.

The Human Toll and Media Industry Solidarity

The plight of Yudistiro Pranoto has illuminated the broader vulnerabilities faced by field journalists across Indonesia. Media organizations, press associations, and independent journalist unions have continuously voiced their solidarity, emphasizing that the safety and psychological well-being of reporters must remain paramount.

Head of News Gathering iNews Media Group Lukman Hanafi, who was present to welcome the Banten Governor, expressed profound gratitude for the visit and the continuous outpouring of empathy from public figures and colleagues nationwide. "The solidarity shown by Governor Andra Soni and his administration means a great deal to us at iNews Media Group, and most importantly, to Yudis’s family," Lukman remarked. "We remain in constant coordination with search authorities, holding onto hope while providing comprehensive support to Rodiyah and the children."

For Rodiyah Nasution, the journey has been an emotional crucible. Her active participation in field searches alongside professional rescue personnel has captured public attention, symbolizing the immense sacrifices families of journalists often bear behind the scenes. Her resilience has drawn widespread admiration from civil society groups and women’s organizations, who continue to rally around the family with emotional and logistical backing.

Broader Implications for Journalist Safety and Emergency Response

The ongoing situation surrounding Yudistiro Pranoto serves as a stark reminder of the inherent risks associated with field journalism, particularly in maritime and disaster-prone regions of the Indonesian archipelago. Analysts and press freedom advocates point out that while media outlets enforce strict standard operating procedures (SOPs) regarding field safety, unpredictable natural hazards and remote environments often introduce variables that test the limits of emergency preparedness.

Furthermore, the active involvement of regional leadership—such as Governor Andra Soni’s visit—demonstrates a strengthening synergy between regional governments and the Fourth Estate. In moments of crisis, the line between institutional duty and human empathy blurs, fostering a unified response that transcends professional boundaries.

As the search operation enters its subsequent phases, authorities have vowed to maintain comprehensive sweeps across targeted maritime sectors. The collective hope of the media fraternity, government officials, and the general public remains fixed on a positive resolution, with ongoing prayers directed toward the safe recovery of Yudistiro Pranoto and the continued strength of his family.

Governor Andra Soni and his entourage concluded their visit at 14.50 WIB, departing the residence after offering final words of comfort to Rodiyah Nasution and her children. As the investigation and search efforts persist, the resilience displayed by the Pranoto family and the steadfast solidarity of the community stand as testaments to enduring human spirit in the face of profound adversity.

Beli Rumah Bonus Mobil? Wujudkan Impianmu Sekaligus di BRI Consumer Expo 2026!

by Suro Senen
written by Suro Senen

Securing a private residence and a reliable vehicle remains the cornerstone of long-term financial planning for the average Indonesian household. As economic indicators fluctuate and urban development continues to reshape the landscape of cities like Tangerang, the decision-making process for major assets has become increasingly complex. Recognizing the need for a centralized, accessible platform to address these consumer requirements, Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) has officially launched the BRI Consumer Expo 2026 Goes to Bintaro Jaya. This two-day event, held at the Marketing Gallery of Bintaro Jaya on September 26-27, 2026, serves as a strategic intervention to bridge the gap between property developers, automotive dealers, and prospective buyers through integrated financial solutions.

A Holistic Approach to Asset Acquisition

The BRI Consumer Expo 2026 is designed as a comprehensive marketplace where the traditional barriers to property and automotive ownership—namely the complexity of loan applications and the fragmentation of information—are effectively removed. By consolidating the Property Expo, Automotive Expo, and direct financial consulting services under one roof, BRI aims to streamline the customer journey.

For many, the hurdle to homeownership is not merely the price tag but the uncertainty surrounding financing terms. During the event, attendees are provided with direct access to credit officers, allowing for real-time simulations of mortgage (KPR) and vehicle loan (KKB) payments. This direct interaction is intended to foster transparency and ensure that prospective homeowners and car buyers are fully informed about their debt-to-income ratios before committing to long-term financial obligations.

Strategic Financial Incentives

A primary draw for the event is the competitive interest rate structure offered by BRI, which is specifically curated to alleviate the initial financial burden of high-value purchases. For the mortgage segment (BRI KPR), the bank has introduced a promotional rate starting at 1.75% fixed for the first year. This is a significant move in a market currently navigating shifts in interest rate policies, providing a cushion for new homeowners during their initial adjustment period.

In addition to the one-year fixed offer, the bank has rolled out a tiered interest structure designed for long-term planning:

  • Fixed 3-year options at 3.00% and 3.75%.
  • Fixed 5-year options at 3.40%, 4.50%, and 7.00%.
  • Variable long-term tenors spanning 10, 15, and 20 years, incorporating a structured step-up mechanism before reverting to the prevailing market counter rate.

For the automotive sector, BRI KKB is offering rates starting from 1.81% for a one-year tenor. By bundling these offers, the bank is essentially encouraging a "total lifestyle" purchase, where families can synchronize their housing and mobility needs through a single financing partner. Furthermore, the waiver of administrative and provision fees acts as a powerful incentive to lower the "up-front" cost barrier, which remains one of the most cited reasons for households delaying their property purchases.

Contextualizing the Property and Automotive Landscape

The selection of Bintaro Jaya as the venue for this exposition is far from coincidental. Bintaro has long been established as a premier residential hub in the Greater Jakarta area (Jabodetabek), characterized by its focus on transit-oriented development and community-based amenities. The synergy between a major developer like Bintaro Jaya and a financial giant like BRI reflects a broader trend in the Indonesian economy: the move toward ecosystem-based marketing.

In the first half of 2026, Indonesia’s consumer confidence index remained resilient, bolstered by domestic consumption. However, the property market has faced headwinds due to global inflationary pressures and the rising cost of construction materials. By offering these specific financial products, BRI is effectively acting as a catalyst to keep the property market liquid, ensuring that the demand for mid-to-upper-tier housing in satellite cities remains robust.

Beli Rumah Bonus Mobil? Wujudkan Impianmu Sekaligus di BRI Consumer Expo 2026!

Chronology of the Event

  • September 25, 2026: Final preparations at the Marketing Gallery of Bintaro Jaya. Banks and developers synchronize their databases to ensure seamless transaction processing during the event.
  • September 26, 2026 (Day 1): Official opening of the BRI Consumer Expo 2026. The morning session focuses on mortgage consultations, while the afternoon features a "Talk Show" segment addressing the nuances of financial health and real estate investment strategies.
  • September 27, 2026 (Day 2): Closing of the event. The final day emphasizes the urgency of the promotional offers and includes music performances to attract a wider demographic, including young professionals and first-time buyers who are looking for a more relaxed, community-focused shopping environment.

Official Perspectives and Stakeholder Synergy

While specific individual quotes from the event were not disclosed, bank spokespeople have consistently emphasized that BRI’s role is to act as a financial enabler. By hosting such expos, the bank is not just lending money; it is educating the public on financial literacy. The "Talk Show" segments are critical in this regard, as they cover topics such as credit scoring, the importance of maintaining a clean financial history, and how to manage multiple debt streams effectively.

From the developer’s side, the partnership with BRI simplifies the sales process. Potential buyers who might have previously been discouraged by the complexity of applying for a KPR at a separate branch can now get pre-approved on-site. This significantly reduces the "drop-off" rate—the number of customers who express interest but fail to proceed due to financing delays.

The Macro-Economic Implications

The BRI Consumer Expo 2026 serves as a microcosm of the current banking strategy in Indonesia: shift from transactional banking to relationship-based service models. By providing low-interest financing for home and vehicle acquisition, BRI is helping to stimulate the secondary sectors that rely on these industries, including interior design, automotive services, and infrastructure development.

However, analysts caution that such promotional periods must be matched with prudent credit assessment. While the low interest rates are attractive, the bank maintains strict eligibility criteria to ensure that the credit quality remains high. This "balanced growth" approach is essential for maintaining the stability of the national banking sector, especially as consumer debt levels are watched closely by regulators.

Impact on the Consumer Journey

The integration of automotive and property financing is particularly beneficial for the growing middle class in Indonesia. For young families, the ability to settle their housing and transportation needs in one go reduces the "mental load" associated with large purchases. Furthermore, the inclusion of music performances and interactive sessions transforms the bank from an intimidating financial institution into a lifestyle partner.

This strategy addresses a critical pain point in the Indonesian consumer market: the lack of time to research disparate options. By bringing the supply (developers and car dealers) and the demand (consumers) to one location, the event creates a high-conversion environment.

Future Outlook and Sustainability

Looking ahead, the success of the Bintaro Jaya edition will likely set the blueprint for future "Goes to" events across other Indonesian cities. The model is sustainable because it relies on existing partnerships rather than temporary, high-cost marketing gimmicks. As digitalization continues to permeate banking, we may see future iterations of these expos integrating digital "phygital" (physical plus digital) experiences, where visitors can scan QR codes to instantly calculate loan repayments or check their eligibility against their mobile banking apps.

In conclusion, the BRI Consumer Expo 2026 is more than just a sales event; it is a strategic maneuver by one of Indonesia’s largest banks to drive domestic economic activity. By offering highly competitive interest rates, waiving hidden costs, and creating a supportive environment for decision-making, BRI is actively facilitating the aspirations of thousands of families. As the event concludes, the long-term impact will be measured not just in the volume of credit disbursed, but in the number of households that successfully transitioned into their own homes and vehicles with a sustainable financial plan in place. The synergy between institutional financial power and local urban development remains a vital engine for growth in the Indonesian economy, and this expo serves as a testament to the effectiveness of that collaboration.

Punya Jaringan Lebih dari 3.300 Apoteker, AS Watson Catat Penjualan Produk Kesehatan Global Naik 10 Persen

by Nila Kartika Wati
written by Nila Kartika Wati

Jakarta — In commemoration of World Pharmacist Day, AS Watson, the world’s largest international health and beauty retailer, has issued a formal statement expressing deep appreciation for the continuous contributions of more than 3,300 in-house pharmacists and nearly 10,000 healthcare professionals operating across its expansive global network. These professionals provide daily proactive health and wellness consultations to consumers through a vast footprint comprising over 1,770 pharmacies worldwide.

The celebration of this international day coincides with a notable shift in consumer behavior toward early health maintenance, proactive self-care, and preventative medicine. Driven by this heightened global awareness, AS Watson has recorded a robust 10 percent year-on-year growth in its global health product sales category over the past year. This significant commercial expansion highlights a profound structural shift in consumer demand, moving away from reactive treatment models toward comprehensive, holistic health solutions and sustainable lifestyle enhancements.

The Evolution of Preventative Healthcare and the O+O Strategy

Addressing the media on Friday, September 25, 2026, Peter Macnab, International Commercial Director of AS Watson, emphasized that the modern healthcare landscape is undergoing a fundamental transformation. The industry is pivoting rapidly from traditional curative medicine toward holistic prevention, early detection, and personalized wellness regimens. In response to this paradigm shift, AS Watson is actively supporting its global consumer base by offering trusted professional advice, highly personalized clinical services, and innovative Offline-plus-Online (O+O) retail solutions.

"We are immensely proud and deeply appreciative of our pharmacists and healthcare professionals who, through their specialized expertise and unwavering daily dedication, provide a profound contribution to the health and wellbeing of our consumers every single day," Macnab stated.

The integration of physical storefronts with digital platforms—commonly referred to in the retail and health sectors as the O+O model—has become a cornerstone of AS Watson’s corporate strategy. By bridging physical accessibility with digital convenience, the company enables consumers to consult with licensed professionals in-store while seamlessly managing their wellness journeys, purchasing recurring prescriptions, and accessing health tracking tools via digital applications.

Unpacking the Global Health Study: Changing Consumer Behaviors

To better understand and quantify the shifting dynamics of consumer behavior regarding health maintenance, AS Watson unveiled key findings from its comprehensive Global Health Study. The research was conducted by WISE, AS Watson’s dedicated customer experience insights division, which surveyed more than 11,000 respondents spanning 10 distinct markets across Europe and Asia.

The empirical data gathered by the WISE division provides a granular look at the psychological and behavioral drivers behind modern wellness consumption. According to the study, underlying concerns about personal and familial health (43 percent) represent the primary catalyst driving consumers to actively purchase and utilize health-related products. Concurrently, professional guidance and clinical recommendations (41 percent) provided by certified healthcare workers remain one of the most decisive external influences shaping purchasing decisions. Interestingly, informal recommendations originating from close social circles, such as family and friends, accounted for 32 percent of external influence.

When examining the mechanics of information discovery, modern consumers demonstrate a hybrid approach that seamlessly merges digital exploration with traditional brick-and-mortar engagement. The study revealed that digital channels dominate the research phase, with 82 percent of respondents utilizing online search tools to investigate health products and symptoms. However, this digital exploration is heavily supplemented by direct consultations with healthcare professionals (49 percent) and spontaneous product discovery within physical retail environments (44 percent).

Ultimately, when consumers reach the decisive point of purchase, their choices are governed by a calculated mix of economic incentives and product credibility. Price points and promotional offers heavily influence 56 percent of purchasing decisions, followed closely by brand trust and reputation (48 percent), and the proven functional benefits of the product itself (45 percent).

The Indispensable Role of Pharmacists in Preventative Healthcare

Industry analysts and public health advocates note that these empirical findings strongly validate the expanding scope of community pharmacy. Pharmacists are no longer viewed merely as dispensers of pharmaceutical drugs; rather, they are increasingly recognized as frontline public health providers capable of delivering primary preventative care.

In many urban and suburban communities, the local pharmacy serves as the most accessible healthcare outpost. By offering blood pressure monitoring, cholesterol screenings, nutritional counseling, and vaccination services, pharmacists bridge the gap between primary care physicians and the general public. The findings from the AS Watson Global Health Study reinforce this reality, demonstrating that consumers actively rely on pharmacists and allied healthcare professionals to navigate an increasingly complex marketplace of wellness supplements, over-the-counter medications, and preventative health devices.

The shift toward preventative healthcare also carries significant macroeconomic implications. As global healthcare systems face mounting financial pressures from aging populations and the rising prevalence of chronic lifestyle diseases—such as diabetes, cardiovascular disorders, and obesity—shifting the focus toward prevention is essential. Empowering consumers to take early control of their health through accessible professional guidance helps mitigate long-term systemic burdens on hospital networks and national health insurance systems.

Strategic Implications and Future Outlook for Global Health Retail

Looking toward the horizon, AS Watson’s leadership has articulated a clear vision for the future of retail pharmacy. Peter Macnab noted that the healthcare services of tomorrow will be defined by three core pillars: proactive prevention, deep personalization, and universal accessibility.

Cybercriminals Exploit Global Anticipation for iPhone 18 Launch Through Sophisticated Phishing and Fraudulent Retail Campaigns

The global technology landscape is currently witnessing a surge in sophisticated cybercriminal activity targeting the highly anticipated release of the iPhone 18. As Apple prepares to unveil its latest flagship device, security researchers from Kaspersky have identified a widespread campaign of fraudulent websites designed to deceive consumers. These malicious actors are leveraging the high level of public interest to orchestrate elaborate phishing schemes, offering counterfeit pre-order opportunities, unrealistic discounts, and deceptive payment gateways. This digital threat landscape underscores the persistent risk associated with high-profile product launches, where consumer urgency often overrides cybersecurity vigilance.

The Mechanics of the Fraudulent Campaigns

The threat intelligence team at Kaspersky has observed a multi-continental operation that mimics the aesthetic and branding of legitimate authorized retailers. These fraudulent portals are not limited to a single region; they have been discovered in multiple languages, including English, Arabic, and Portuguese, indicating a coordinated effort to reach a global audience.

In one prominent example, cybercriminals established a website offering the upcoming iPhone 18 at a 25 percent discount—a price point intentionally designed to be attractive yet within the realm of possibility for promotional events. To facilitate these illicit transactions, the sites incorporate diverse payment methods, including cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin. By opting for decentralized digital currencies, attackers effectively bypass traditional banking security measures and chargeback protocols, making the recovery of stolen funds nearly impossible for the victims.

The design of these platforms is meticulous. By replicating the user interface of official Apple resellers, the sites create a false sense of security. They often feature countdown timers to create artificial urgency, testimonials from "satisfied" customers, and detailed product specifications that align with rumors surrounding the iPhone 18. Once a user engages with the checkout process, the site initiates a data harvesting sequence, capturing sensitive information such as full names, physical addresses, email contacts, and phone numbers, often including WhatsApp account details.

Regional Case Study: The Brazil Pre-Order Scheme

The risk to consumers is particularly acute in emerging markets, where digital literacy and cybersecurity awareness may vary. Kaspersky identified a specific campaign targeting consumers in Brazil. The site, localized in Portuguese, offered pre-orders for the iPhone 18 Pro with a full array of color options and storage configurations.

To lower the barrier to entry, these criminals implemented a "partial payment" scheme, allowing users to secure their device without paying the full price upfront. The sites also included fraudulent "money-back guarantee" clauses, promising full refunds if the order was cancelled, which serves as a psychological tool to build trust. Once the victim provides their personal details, the site directs them to a malicious payment portal that requests credit card information. This multi-stage process ensures that the attackers harvest both the victim’s financial data and their personal identity, which can be sold on dark web forums or used for secondary social engineering attacks.

The Intersection of Consumer Enthusiasm and Cyber Threats

Historically, the launch of flagship smartphones has served as a primary catalyst for cybercriminal activity. The "hype cycle"—the period between initial rumors and the actual market release—provides attackers with a window of opportunity where consumer demand is at its peak.

Olga Altukhova, a Senior Web Content Analyst at Kaspersky, emphasizes that the intensity of consumer desire is a quantifiable metric for cybercriminals. "When a brand like Apple releases a new flagship, the collective excitement creates a blind spot for many users," Altukhova notes. "Attackers are essentially exploiting the gap between a consumer’s desire to own the latest technology and their ability to verify the authenticity of a vendor."

The prevalence of these scams is supported by data regarding global phishing trends. According to various cybersecurity industry reports, phishing remains the most common entry point for data breaches, accounting for over 80 percent of all cyber incidents. During product launch windows, the volume of phishing attempts related to consumer electronics typically spikes by 30 to 40 percent.

Implications for Data Privacy and Financial Security

The consequences of interacting with these fraudulent platforms extend far beyond the immediate financial loss of a deposit or a payment. By submitting credit card information to an unverified source, victims are exposing themselves to long-term identity theft. The harvested personal data—names, email addresses, and phone numbers—are often compiled into "lead lists" that are traded among malicious actors.

Furthermore, the integration of WhatsApp as a required field in these forms suggests that the attackers are looking for secondary attack vectors. Once in possession of a target’s phone number and full name, attackers can initiate "smishing" (SMS phishing) or voice-based social engineering attacks, potentially gaining unauthorized access to the victim’s broader digital ecosystem, including cloud accounts and two-factor authentication (2FA) bypass attempts.

Strategies for Consumer Protection

To mitigate the risk of falling victim to these scams, security professionals recommend a rigorous vetting process before entering any sensitive information online.

  1. Verify Official Channels: Consumers should only purchase devices through the official Apple website or certified, well-known retail partners. If a website is not listed on the official brand’s "where to buy" page, it should be treated as suspicious.
  2. Scrutinize Pricing: Any offer that appears "too good to be true" usually is. Significant discounts on brand-new, unreleased, or high-demand flagship products are almost universally indicative of fraud.
  3. Check Website Credentials: Secure websites (HTTPS) are a baseline requirement, but they do not guarantee safety. Users should check for spelling errors, grammatical inconsistencies, and suspicious domain names (e.g., "apple-preorder-deals.com" vs. "apple.com").
  4. Use Secure Payment Methods: Avoid paying for high-value items with cryptocurrencies, wire transfers, or digital wallets that lack buyer protection. Credit cards offer the best chance of reversing fraudulent charges.
  5. Enable Advanced Security: Use multi-factor authentication (MFA) on all financial and personal accounts. If a password is compromised, MFA acts as a vital secondary barrier against unauthorized access.

Looking Ahead: The Evolution of Digital Trust

The proliferation of these scams highlights a broader challenge in the digital economy: the erosion of trust in online transactions. As technology becomes more integrated into daily life, the burden of security shifts significantly toward the consumer. Industry experts argue that while platforms and ISPs are making strides in blocking malicious domains, the speed at which attackers can spin up new sites—often using automated tools and AI-generated content—requires a proactive approach from the public.

The launch of the iPhone 18 will undoubtedly be a success for Apple, but for the average consumer, it is also a reminder of the need for heightened vigilance. By adopting a "verify first, transact later" mentality, users can navigate the digital marketplace safely, ensuring that their excitement for new technology does not result in a compromised financial or personal future. As the date of the official release approaches, security agencies and the vendor itself are expected to increase public awareness campaigns, though the ultimate responsibility for data protection remains with the individual user.
