Timnas Indonesia bersiap hadapi laga uji coba di Timur Tengah pada FIFA Matchday November 2026 demi mematangkan taktik jelang Piala Asia 2027

by Basiran
written by Basiran

The Indonesian national football team, famously known as the Garuda squad, is set to undertake a critical series of international friendly matches in the Middle East during the FIFA Matchday window scheduled for November 2026. This strategic move, confirmed by the Chairman of the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI), Erick Thohir, serves as the final phase of preparation for the team ahead of the prestigious 2027 AFC Asian Cup, which is slated to be hosted by Saudi Arabia in January 2027.

The decision to station the team in the Middle East is calculated, aiming to acclimatize the players to the environmental conditions, climate, and playing styles prevalent in the region where the continental tournament will take place. With the FIFA window set for November 9–17, 2026, head coach John Herdman and his staff have a narrow but essential window to refine their tactical blueprints against high-caliber opposition.

Strategic Objectives for the Middle East Tour

For the Indonesian national team, the upcoming tour is not merely about accumulating FIFA ranking points, but about testing the squad’s resilience against technically sophisticated teams. Under the guidance of John Herdman, the Garuda squad has undergone a period of tactical evolution. While Herdman has been notably cautious about making grand promises regarding silverware in the upcoming FIFA ASEAN Cup, his focus remains firmly on institutionalizing a winning mentality and a cohesive playing style that can compete at the highest level of Asian football.

The Middle Eastern region is a traditional powerhouse in Asian football. By scheduling matches against teams like Jordan, the PSSI is providing the players with a simulation of the pressures they will face in the 2027 Asian Cup group stages. The humidity, the intensity of the opposition, and the logistical challenges of traveling abroad are all part of the "stress-testing" required to ensure that Indonesia moves beyond being a participant and becomes a competitive force.

The Jordan Connection: A Key Benchmark

Evidence of the PSSI’s meticulous planning surfaced when the Jordan Football Association (JFA) released its international calendar, which included a confirmed fixture against Indonesia on November 13, 2026. This match represents a significant benchmark for the Indonesian team. Jordan has historically been a stubborn opponent for Southeast Asian sides, known for their physical prowess and disciplined defensive transitions.

Facing a team like Jordan provides John Herdman with the perfect data set to analyze the efficacy of his defensive organization. In the months leading up to this tour, Herdman has been working extensively on the defensive transition—a phase of the game that often separates top-tier Asian nations from the rest. The match on November 13 is expected to highlight whether the team’s current defensive structure can withstand direct, high-pressing attacks, a common trait among Middle Eastern teams.

The Chronology of Preparation for 2027

The road to the 2027 AFC Asian Cup began long before this current announcement. Indonesia’s progress has been a culmination of a multi-year strategy involving youth development, the integration of high-level diaspora players, and the appointment of an experienced coaching staff.

  • Early 2026: PSSI and the technical directorate finalized the long-term roadmap for the national team, emphasizing the need for high-level friendlies in the final quarter of the year.
  • Mid-2026: Under Coach John Herdman, the team began emphasizing tactical flexibility, moving away from a rigid defensive setup toward a more proactive, ball-possession-based approach.
  • September 2026: Herdman confirmed that he has a clear vision for the squad composition, though he remains open to evaluating late-bloomers and players hitting form in their respective leagues.
  • November 2026: The Middle East tour commences. This serves as the penultimate block of preparation before the final training camp in December.
  • January 2027: The commencement of the AFC Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia.

This timeline demonstrates the methodical approach currently employed by the Indonesian football authorities. By securing matches against geographically relevant opponents, they are minimizing the "culture shock" that often plagues teams moving from the tropical climate of Southeast Asia to the arid conditions of the Middle East.

Tactical Implications and Herdman’s Philosophy

John Herdman’s tenure as the head coach of Indonesia has been defined by his emphasis on "process over result." While the public often demands immediate success, Herdman has been transparent about the need for consistency. His reluctance to over-promise on the ASEAN Cup front is a testament to his grounded approach, focusing instead on building a team culture that can sustain performance over a tournament period.

In the Middle East, fans and analysts alike will be watching to see how Herdman integrates his core roster. There is significant pressure to finalize the starting eleven. While the pool of talent available to Indonesia has grown significantly, finding the right balance between established stars and emerging young talents remains a delicate task. The November window will likely see Herdman rotate his squad to assess depth, ensuring that in the event of injuries or suspensions during the Asian Cup, there is no drop-off in quality.

Broader Impact on Indonesian Football

The commitment to participate in high-profile friendlies outside of the ASEAN region has broader implications for the development of Indonesian football. It signals to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) that Indonesia is serious about its growth and is willing to invest in the necessary logistics to compete with the continent’s elite.

Furthermore, these matches are vital for the FIFA rankings. Improving the national team’s standing in the rankings is essential for future tournament seeding. By consistently playing—and attempting to secure results against—nations like Jordan, Indonesia positions itself to climb the rankings ladder, which in turn could grant them more favorable draws in future qualification cycles.

For the players, the exposure to international football in a professional environment is invaluable. It forces them out of their comfort zones, exposes them to different refereeing styles, and demands a higher level of tactical discipline. As the local league in Indonesia continues to improve its own standards, the integration of "international-standard" experiences is the final piece of the puzzle.

Official Responses and Stakeholder Expectations

Erick Thohir’s confirmation regarding the tour reflects a collaborative effort between the federation and the coaching staff. Thohir has consistently emphasized that the national team is the "face" of Indonesian sports, and his direct involvement in securing these friendlies underscores the high level of priority placed on the 2027 Asian Cup.

While specific details of other opponents in the November window remain subject to negotiation, the intent is clear: the PSSI is looking for quality over quantity. Two matches against high-ranked opposition are seen as more beneficial than multiple matches against lower-tier teams. The focus is on preparation, intensity, and ensuring that by the time the team touches down in Saudi Arabia in 2027, they are fully acclimatized to the demands of the tournament.

Conclusion: Looking Ahead to 2027

The upcoming tour of the Middle East is more than just a series of friendly matches; it is a vital checkpoint in Indonesia’s journey toward continental competitiveness. As the team prepares to face Jordan and potentially other regional rivals, the eyes of the nation will be on John Herdman’s side. The goal is to evolve, adapt, and build a cohesive unit capable of standing toe-to-toe with the giants of Asia.

With the support of the PSSI and a clear, well-executed roadmap, the Garuda squad is in a strong position to make a significant impression in the 2027 AFC Asian Cup. The lessons learned in the desert heat of the Middle East this November will undoubtedly serve as the foundation for the tactical maneuvers that will be deployed on the grandest stage of Asian football just a few months later. As the countdown to January 2027 continues, every training session and every minute played during this November tour will be a step toward defining the future of Indonesian football on the global map.

written by Basiran

The atmosphere at the Mapei Stadium in Reggio Emilia is reaching a fever pitch as Sassuolo prepares to host Italian giants Juventus in a high-stakes Serie A encounter scheduled for Monday, September 14, 2026, at 01:45 WIB. Among the tactical narratives surrounding this fixture, the spotlight has firmly landed on Indonesian international defender Jay Idzes. Reports from the Sassuolo camp suggest that Idzes is poised to be named in the starting lineup, a testament to his rapid adaptation and growing importance to the Neroverdi’s tactical structure under their current management.

Tactical Deployment and Defensive Strategy

As the tactical preparations reach their final stages, analysts expect Sassuolo to deploy a disciplined 4-3-3 formation designed to balance defensive stability with the ability to transition quickly into the attack. Jay Idzes is earmarked to anchor the heart of the defense, likely partnering with Martin Erlic. This defensive duo will be tasked with the formidable challenge of neutralizing a Juventus frontline that has shown both technical brilliance and relentless intensity in the opening weeks of the 2026-2027 campaign.

For Idzes, this fixture represents a significant milestone in his European career. Facing a club of Juventus’ stature—a side historically synonymous with Serie A dominance—provides the ultimate litmus test for a defender looking to establish himself as a premier talent in one of the world’s most competitive leagues. His ability to read the game, combined with his physical presence, will be critical in managing the movement of the Juventus attacking unit.

Context of the 2026-2027 Serie A Season

The current season has seen a fascinating start, with the league table beginning to take shape. Sassuolo enters the match holding a respectable position, currently sitting 10th in the standings. Their campaign record—consisting of one victory, one draw, and one defeat—reflects a team in transition that is searching for consistency. A result against a side like Juventus would not only provide a massive boost to their points tally but would also serve as a psychological turning point for the squad.

On the other side of the pitch, Juventus arrives in Reggio Emilia under the stewardship of head coach Luciano Spalletti. The Bianconeri have enjoyed a strong start, remaining unbeaten in their opening fixtures. Their momentum, fueled by impressive victories over Frosinone and Parma, was slightly tempered by a 1-1 draw against AC Milan at the Allianz Stadium last week. Nevertheless, Juventus remains a formidable force, characterized by a high-pressing style and a tactical rigidity that makes them difficult to break down.

Jay Idzes Diprediksi Masuk Starting XI Sassuolo vs Juventus, Duel Berat Menanti di Serie A

Chronology of the Fixture and Preparation

The lead-up to this match has been defined by rigorous training sessions at the Mapei Football Center. Since the conclusion of the international break, the coaching staff at Sassuolo has prioritized defensive cohesion. The inclusion of Idzes in the starting XI is not merely a tactical preference but a result of his consistent performances during the preseason and the early rounds of the domestic campaign.

The chronology of this matchup highlights the contrasting trajectories of the two clubs. While Juventus is consistently fighting for the Scudetto, Sassuolo’s objective remains the consolidation of their status as a mid-table side capable of challenging for European qualification spots. The match on Monday is the fourth round of Serie A action, a period where teams are often still finding their rhythm, making the points available in this game particularly valuable for long-term standing.

Analytical Perspective: The "Idzes Factor"

From an analytical standpoint, the presence of an Indonesian player in the starting lineup of a Serie A fixture against Juventus highlights the increasing global reach of Italian football. However, beyond the commercial interest, Idzes is being evaluated purely on his athletic merits. His performance against Frosinone in the previous weeks displayed a level of composure that caught the eye of the scouting department.

Key metrics for defensive players in the modern game—such as progressive passing accuracy, duel success rates, and aerial interception frequency—will be the primary indicators of Idzes’ success against Juventus. Should he manage to contain the opposition’s primary playmakers, it would significantly enhance his standing in the eyes of his manager and prospective suitors. Furthermore, his ability to initiate attacks from the back, a prerequisite for the 4-3-3 system, will be tested under the immense pressure of the Juventus midfield press.

Official Responses and Team Sentiment

While official statements from the Sassuolo hierarchy remain measured, internal reports suggest a high level of confidence in the defensive unit. The technical staff has emphasized the need for "collective focus" and "individual responsibility" when dealing with the fluid attacking movements typically orchestrated by Spalletti’s men.

Though specific quotes from the players have been limited, the sentiment surrounding the club is one of determined optimism. Players have acknowledged the difficulty of the task, noting that matches against Juventus require a 90-minute commitment to the game plan. The integration of Idzes into the starting defense is seen as a strategic move to provide the team with the necessary balance of speed and physicality to cope with the high-octane nature of Serie A football.

Broader Implications and Impact

The outcome of this match will have ripple effects across the league table. For Juventus, dropping points against mid-table opposition would be seen as a setback in their pursuit of the top spot. For Sassuolo, securing a point or a victory would validate their tactical direction and prove that they can compete with the traditional "Big Three" of Italian football.

Furthermore, the individual performance of Jay Idzes holds broader implications for his career trajectory. As he gains experience in Italy, his development becomes a focal point for fans and analysts alike. Success against a top-tier opponent like Juventus serves as a career-defining moment, often leading to increased confidence and, in many cases, enhanced market valuation.

Looking Ahead

As the clock ticks toward kickoff, the tactical chess match between the two managers becomes the central theme. Spalletti’s experience in navigating the nuances of the Italian game will be tested by the energetic approach of the Sassuolo coaching staff. The Mapei Stadium is expected to be at near-capacity, providing a hostile environment that will challenge the concentration of the visiting Juventus players.

In conclusion, the match between Sassuolo and Juventus is more than just a routine league fixture. It is a collision of objectives, with Juventus aiming for supremacy and Sassuolo aiming for validation. Jay Idzes stands at the center of this narrative, embodying the potential of the modern, globally-sourced defender. As the referee blows the whistle on Monday, the focus will be on whether the defensive setup—anchored by Idzes—can withstand the pressure of a Juventus side hungry to reclaim their place at the summit of Italian football.

The fans, the pundits, and the international community will be watching closely to see if this pivotal match serves as the breakthrough moment for the Indonesian defender in the storied history of the Serie A. With the tactical setup confirmed, the stage is set for a high-intensity battle in Reggio Emilia that could shape the narrative of the 2026-2027 season for both clubs involved. The discipline, the tactical execution, and the individual brilliance displayed during these 90 minutes will ultimately determine who walks away with the three points and, more importantly, the momentum required for the grueling months of competition that lie ahead.

written by Basiran

The national workforce development landscape has reached another critical milestone as the National Internship Program, widely recognized as MagangHub Batch 2 Angkatan II for the year 2026, officially advances to the participant selection phase. This pivotal stage, which runs from September 9 to September 15, 2026, is being conducted independently by various partner organizations, including private corporations, state-owned enterprises, and government ministries or agencies. The selection process serves as the primary gateway for thousands of hopeful applicants aiming to secure structured, high-value internship placements designed to bridge the gap between academic theory and the practical demands of the modern labor market.

Managed under the auspices of the Ministry of Manpower, the MagangHub initiative represents a cornerstone of Indonesia’s broader human resource development strategy. As industries evolve rapidly in response to technological disruptions and shifting economic paradigms, the necessity for targeted vocational training and experiential learning has never been more pronounced. The current selection phase is designed to meticulously evaluate candidates based on specific organizational needs, designated apprenticeship fields, and the rigorous criteria established by participating host institutions.

Chronology and Key Dates of MagangHub Batch 2 Angkatan II 2026

The rollout of MagangHub Batch 2 Angkatan II follows a tightly regulated timeline orchestrated by the Directorate General of Vocational Training and Productivity Development (Binalavotas) under the Ministry of Manpower. Following the close of the registration window, the current selection period spans six days, concluding on September 15, 2026. During this timeframe, partner organizations are tasked with reviewing applications, conducting interviews or administrative assessments, and identifying candidates whose profiles align best with their operational requirements.

Once the partner organizations finalize their candidate evaluations, the official results of the selection process are scheduled to be announced to the public and individual applicants on September 18, 2026. Successful candidates will not have long to wait before beginning their professional journeys; the official commencement date for the internship period is set for September 21, 2026. This streamlined schedule ensures a seamless transition from the academic or job-seeking sphere into active corporate and institutional environments, maximizing momentum for both the interns and the host entities.

Perspectives from Ministry Leadership on Competency Alignment

Addressing the significance of the selection phase, Darmawansyah, the Director General of Vocational Training and Productivity Development at the Ministry of Manpower, emphasized that the evaluation process is much more than a routine administrative hurdle. Speaking in an official statement released on Friday, September 11, 2026, he underscored that the integrity of the selection process directly influences the ultimate success of the apprenticeship experience.

"The selection process is a vital component to ensure that participants engage in internships that precisely match their fields of study and the specific operational needs of our partner organizations," Darmawansyah stated. He further reiterated that the overarching goal of the program extends beyond merely providing a temporary workplace experience. Instead, the initiative is engineered to guarantee that the exposure gained by participants is deeply relevant to their core competencies and career aspirations.

By carefully screening applicants, the ministry aims to create an optimal synergy where the specific technical skills and personal interests of young job seekers intersect seamlessly with the workforce demands of industry leaders. "We want this internship to serve as a genuine springboard for participants to acquire professional experience that directly reinforces and builds upon their existing competencies," Darmawansyah added, highlighting the ministry’s long-term vision for sustainable youth employability.

Contextualizing MagangHub within Indonesia’s Economic Strategy

The execution of programs like MagangHub does not occur in a vacuum; it is part of a deliberate, multi-faceted national strategy aimed at mitigating structural unemployment and enhancing the overall competitiveness of Indonesia’s human capital. In recent years, the government has intensified its focus on vocational education and practical training as vital instruments to address the mismatch between the output of the national education system and the dynamic needs of the industrial sector.

Historically, structural unemployment in developing economies often stems from a lack of practical experience among fresh graduates, making employers hesitant to invest in onboarding entry-level workers. By institutionalizing structured internship frameworks through platforms like MagangHub, the government effectively shares the responsibility of workforce development with the private sector. Host institutions benefit from a pipeline of motivated, trainable talent, while participants gain the credentials, networks, and practical know-how required to thrive in a competitive job market.

The scope of the initiative is vast, drawing participation from diverse economic sectors. For instance, major state-owned enterprises and multinational corporations regularly open substantial numbers of placement opportunities through the platform. A notable example within the current batch includes large-scale corporate participation, such as major energy conglomerates opening scores of specialized low-cost or stipend-supported internship slots tailored to engineering, administrative, and technical disciplines. These corporate partners establish their own subset of criteria, ensuring that the selected interns are immediately capable of contributing to project-based workflows.

Implications for the National Labor Market and Youth Employment

The broader implications of the MagangHub Batch 2 Angkatan II selection phase extend far beyond the immediate placement of individual participants. As the program progresses toward its implementation phase in late September 2026, economists and labor market analysts will be closely monitoring its outcomes as an indicator of vocational program efficacy.

First, successful mass-internship programs help reduce friction in the labor market by signaling candidate quality to prospective employers. Participants who successfully complete a structured MagangHub placement graduate with verified institutional experience, significantly reducing information asymmetry between job seekers and hiring managers. This certification-like validation enhances the resume profile of young professionals entering the workforce for the first time.

Second, the active involvement of diverse ministries and industry partners fosters a culture of collaborative human capital development. When private enterprises actively co-design and participate in the selection and training of interns, educational institutions receive indirect feedback regarding curriculum relevance. Over time, this feedback loop encourages academic institutions to adapt their teaching methodologies to better reflect real-world industry requirements.

Finally, the psychological and societal impact on the younger demographic cannot be overstated. By providing a clear, merit-based pathway into reputable organizations, initiatives like MagangHub instill confidence among the nation’s youth, curbing discouragement associated with job hunting and fostering a proactive approach to career development.

Navigating the Next Steps and Accessing Information

As the September 15 deadline for the selection phase rapidly approaches, applicants who have submitted their credentials are encouraged to monitor their application statuses closely through official channels. The announcement of successful candidates on September 18 will mark the transition from hopeful anticipation to rigorous professional engagement, culminating in the official start of the internship terms on September 21.

For candidates, educational institutions, and prospective industry partners seeking comprehensive, up-to-date information regarding the operational guidelines, future batches, and procedural updates related to the initiative, the Ministry of Manpower maintains a dedicated digital portal. Detailed inquiries and announcements can be accessed directly through the official website at maganghub.kemnaker.go.id. Through continued transparency and structured execution, the MagangHub program continues to cement its role as a pivotal instrument in shaping Indonesia’s future workforce.

Pertamina Ungkap Harga Pertamax Bisa Rp 20.000 per Liter

by Basiran
written by Basiran

JAKARTA — Escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have intensified global energy market anxieties, prompting state-owned energy giant PT Pertamina (Persero) to issue a stern warning regarding domestic fuel prices. Continued disruptions in critical trade corridors, particularly the Strait of Hormuz, threaten to drive the price of non-subsidized fuels such as Pertamax and Pertamina Dex as high as Rp18,000 to Rp20,000 per liter if international crude benchmarks fail to normalize.

The warning was delivered by Pertamina Patra Niaga Retail Marketing Director Eko Ricky Susanto during a public engagement event in Yogyakarta. According to Eko, the ongoing conflict—characterized primarily by hostilities involving the United States and Iran—represents one of the most severe geopolitical shocks the company has navigated in recent years, far surpassing the energy market volatility witnessed during the onset of the Russia-Ukraine war.

"We sincerely hope that this Middle East conflict can de-escalate very soon," Eko stated. "If not, the economic fallout will continue to impact our domestic pricing structures severely, as we are witnessing today."

Global Supply Chain Vulnerabilities and the Strait of Hormuz Chokepoint

The modern global energy trade relies heavily on the smooth transit of crude oil through tightly constrained maritime choke points. Among these, the Strait of Hormuz stands out as the most critical artery for global petroleum supply, carrying roughly a fifth of the world’s petroleum consumption daily. When military engagements or diplomatic standoffs occur in or adjacent to this vital corridor, shipping insurers, logistics providers, and energy traders immediately price in elevated risk premiums.

Unlike the regionalized disruptions sparked by the conflict between Russia and Ukraine—which primarily altered European pipeline dynamics and forced a rerouting of global liquefied natural gas (LNG) and Urals crude—the Middle East crisis directly threatens foundational crude extraction and primary maritime export routes. Eko emphasized that the sheer volume of petroleum passing through the Persian Gulf makes the current confrontation exceptionally dangerous for downstream markets worldwide.

"During the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the global energy crisis was not nearly as pervasive or systemically threatening as what we are experiencing with the US-Iran friction," Eko explained. "With the ongoing war in the Middle East and the threats surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, the repercussions are truly global. Beyond mere energy availability, international pricing stability has been fundamentally compromised."

Pertamina Ungkap Harga Pertamax Bisa Rp 20.000 per Liter

Surging Indonesian Crude Price (ICP) Compounds Domestic Pressures

The ripple effects of international oil price volatility are quickly transmitted to Indonesia’s domestic economy through the Indonesian Crude Price (ICP), the official pricing benchmark established by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM). Recent data from the ministry underscores the mounting fiscal and commercial pressures facing the nation.

According to official figures, the average ICP for August 2026 climbed significantly to US$89.43 per barrel. This upward trajectory was formalized under the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Decree Number 352.K/MG.03/MEM.M/2026, signed by the energy minister. The August reading reflects a sharp increase of US$7.75 per barrel compared to the July 2026 average of US$81.68 per barrel.

This steady climb in the baseline cost of crude oil occurs against a backdrop of persistent geopolitical risk and widespread market anxiety over potential supply shortages. Government authorities, working in tandem with national energy distributors, are closely monitoring daily market fluctuations ahead of the September pricing determinations. The central focus remains on safeguarding national energy resilience while ensuring absolute transparency and accountability in the administration of the ICP formula.

Economic Implications for Non-Subsidized Fuel Consumers

While the Indonesian government heavily subsidizes specific fuel products—such as Pertalite (RON 90) and Solar (automotive diesel)—to shield the broader population from extreme poverty and inflation, non-subsidized variants like Pertamax (RON 92) and Pertamina Dex are priced dynamically in accordance with MOPS (Means of Platts Singapore) indexes and prevailing crude prices.

Under Pertamina’s pricing framework, if international crude fails to retreat to pre-crisis levels of US$60 to US$70 per barrel, retail prices for premium fuels inside the archipelago must inevitably adjust upward to reflect true procurement costs. Eko noted that retail figures hovering between Rp18,000 and Rp20,000 per liter are entirely plausible unless a dramatic reversal occurs in global commodity exchanges.

"If international oil prices do not correct downward to the US$60-US$70 per barrel range—levels we enjoyed prior to the onset of this intense geopolitical friction—we will have no commercial choice but to pass these structural cost adjustments through to non-subsidized fuels," Eko noted. "Products like Pertamax and Pertamina Dex will inevitably trade in the Rp18,000 to Rp20,000 bracket given the absence of any downward indicators in the global oil market."

Pertamina Ungkap Harga Pertamax Bisa Rp 20.000 per Liter

Broader Macroeconomic and Social Repercussions

An increase in non-subsidized fuel prices to the projected threshold carries wide-ranging implications for the domestic economy. While middle-to-upper-class motorists constitute the primary consumer base for Pertamax and Pertamina Dex, transportation logistics companies, commercial fleet operators, and private enterprises also rely heavily on non-subsidized industrial fuels for their operations.

When commercial fuel costs surge, logistics providers frequently pass these overhead expenses down the supply chain, triggering generalized cost-push inflation across consumer goods, food products, and manufacturing sectors. Consequently, economists and industry analysts are urging policymakers to accelerate transition frameworks toward domestic renewable energy sources and electric vehicle adoption to decouple the national economy from fossil fuel vulnerabilities.

At the corporate level, entities such as Pertamina Patra Niaga continue to balance commercial viability with corporate social responsibility mandates. Alongside managing volatile fuel procurement strategies, the company has increasingly invested in localized New and Renewable Energy (NRE) initiatives, such as agricultural biomass programs and community-based solar applications, aimed at cushioning rural communities from external economic shocks.

Looking Ahead: Monitoring Global Diplomacy and Energy Security

As international diplomatic channels work to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East, the Indonesian government and Pertamina remain in a state of high alert. The upcoming weeks will prove decisive in determining whether crude markets stabilize or breach psychological resistance levels that would necessitate painful retail price adjustments at domestic gas stations.

For millions of Indonesian motorists and business owners, the trajectory of fuel prices in the coming months remains tethered not just to local economic policies, but to the fragile geopolitical balance thousands of miles away in the Persian Gulf.

BMKG Reports Favorable Weather and High Volcanic Ash During Disappearance of Five Journalists Near Mount Anak Krakatau

by Basiran
written by Basiran

The mysterious disappearance of five journalists, two boat crew members, and a local guide near the volatile Mount Anak Krakatau on Monday, September 7, has prompted extensive investigations into the environmental and meteorological conditions present at the time of the incident. Ida Pramudawardani, the Acting Director of Public Meteorology at the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), provided critical meteorological data regarding the events of that afternoon. According to official agency records, the weather surrounding the disaster zone was classified as generally favorable, characterized by partly cloudy skies and gentle winds. Despite these relatively calm surface conditions, satellite imagery revealed significant atmospheric hazards in the form of towering volcanic ash plumes, shedding new light on the complexities and perils of maritime reporting in active volcanic zones.

The incident has reignited urgent conversations concerning journalist safety, the protocols surrounding media coverage of natural disasters, and the inherent unpredictability of Indonesia’s most active maritime volcanoes. As search and rescue operations intensified in the days following the disappearance, understanding the precise meteorological and geological environment became paramount for investigators attempting to piece together the final moments of the voyage.

Chronology of the Voyage and Subsequent Disappearance

The sequence of events began on Monday, September 7, when a party consisting of five media professionals, two vessel operators, and a local guide departed from the Pagedongan Pier located in Carita, Pandeglang Regency, Banten Province. The delegation utilized a chartered speedboat to navigate the Sunda Strait waters toward Mount Anak Krakatau. The primary objective of the excursion was to document the heightened eruptive activity of the volcano, which had intensified dramatically since the preceding weekend, drawing intense media interest nationwide.

At approximately 14:00 Western Indonesia Time (WIB), the vessel and its occupants officially lost contact with shore-based teams and newsrooms. As hours passed without radio communication or visual confirmation of their return, emergency protocols were triggered. The individuals confirmed to be on board the vessel included M. Bagus Khoirunnas, a journalist representing the state news agency ANTARA; Ari Basuki, reporting for Merdeka; Yudhis, representing iNews; Daus, an international news correspondent for Anadolu Agency; and Donal, working as an independent freelance photojournalist. Accompanying the media crew were experienced local maritime personnel, identified as boat operators Warta (55) and Surakman (60), alongside Heriyanto (49), who served as the local expedition guide.

Favorable Surface Weather Overshadowed by Volcanic Hazards

Addressing the press at the parliamentary complex in Jakarta on Thursday, September 10, Ida Pramudawardani detailed the atmospheric conditions captured by BMKG monitoring stations during the critical afternoon hours when the group lost contact. Official records indicated that between 14:00 and 18:00 WIB, the regional weather was predominantly stable.

"From 2:00 PM until 6:00 PM, the weather conditions were good. Therefore, there was no indication or detection of rainfall," Ida stated during her briefing.

Furthermore, BMKG data confirmed that surface wind speeds peaked at approximately 15 knots, equivalent to roughly 7.5 meters per second—a manageable velocity for maritime navigation in the Sunda Strait. Oceanographic observations similarly indicated that sea wave heights within the immediate vicinity of Anak Krakatau remained at a maximum of one meter. Based purely on maritime and meteorological metrics, authorities initially concluded that standard sea conditions should not have posed an immediate threat to the structural integrity or stability of the speedboat.

However, Ida emphasized that surface stability did not equate to a hazard-free environment. While marine and weather conditions appeared benign, the upper atmosphere presented severe environmental challenges driven directly by ongoing volcanic activity.

The Threat of Dense Volcanic Ash and High-Altitude Plumes

While surface winds and waves were calm, satellite telemetry and atmospheric monitoring equipment highlighted a far more ominous atmospheric phenomenon: dense volcanic ash dispersion. BMKG satellite imaging confirmed that persistent ash columns resulting from the ongoing eruptions were actively spreading across the region, reaching extraordinary altitudes.

"Because on that Monday, ash was still being monitored via satellite imagery up to a height of around 50,000 feet, which is roughly 15,000 meters," Ida explained.

The presence of a volcanic ash plume extending to 50,000 feet indicates a significant explosive phase of Mount Anak Krakatau. Volcanic ash poses multiple immediate and severe threats to both aviation and maritime operations. Inhalation of microscopic silicate particles can cause acute respiratory distress and mechanical failure in combustion engines. Furthermore, heavy ash fall drastically reduces horizontal and vertical visibility, creating hazardous navigation conditions for small vessels attempting to maneuver near the caldera.

Although the surface waters appeared calm, the interaction between heavy ash fallout, potential localized sea-surface turbulence caused by underwater seismic shifts, and reduced visibility likely compounded the dangers faced by the boat operators.

Contextualizing the Eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau

Mount Anak Krakatau, translating literally to the "Child of Krakatoa," occupies a legendary and perilous position in Indonesian geography. Emerging from the caldera formed by the cataclysmic 1883 eruption of the original Krakatoa volcano, the island has experienced continuous growth interrupted by frequent explosive cycles. In December 2018, a massive flank collapse of Anak Krakatau triggered a devastating tsunami along the coastlines of Banten and Lampung, resulting in hundreds of fatalities and prompting heightened scientific scrutiny and hazard monitoring by Indonesian authorities.

The eruption sequence leading up to the September 7 incident began accumulating momentum late in the preceding week. Strombolian and Vulcanian explosions sent ash plumes high into the stratosphere, frequently captivating the public imagination and drawing journalists eager to document the raw power of geological forces. The waters surrounding the archipelago are notoriously dynamic, characterized by complex tidal currents, swift changes in wind direction, and unpredictable swells generated by the funneling effect of the Sunda Strait.

Broader Implications for Media Safety and Disaster Journalism

The disappearance of the journalists near Anak Krakatau has triggered a profound reevaluation within Indonesian media circles regarding safety protocols, risk assessment, and ethical boundaries when reporting on active natural disasters. Covering volcanic eruptions requires specialized training, heavy-duty personal protective equipment, and continuous coordination with geological authorities such as the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) and the BMKG.

Industry observers have noted that intense editorial competition to secure exclusive imagery and breaking coverage can sometimes lead field teams to push operational boundaries. Operating a small speedboat in close proximity to a violently erupting stratovolcano exposes personnel to a cascading array of hazards, ranging from sudden ballistic projectile impacts and pyroclastic surges to asphyxiation from toxic volcanic gases and dense ash clouds.

In the wake of the incident, professional journalistic organizations and labor unions have called for stricter enforcement of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for field reporting in high-risk zones. Media institutions are increasingly urged to prioritize the physical safety of reporters, camera operators, and support staff over speed of delivery, ensuring that comprehensive risk analyses are conducted before any field assignment is approved.

Conclusion and Ongoing Response

As search and rescue teams, supported by local authorities, the Indonesian Navy, and volunteer maritime communities, continue their exhaustive sweeps across the Sunda Strait, the data provided by the BMKG serves as a vital component in reconstructing the timeline of the disaster. While surface weather and wave heights were uncommonly favorable, the invisible and atmospheric perils posed by a 50,000-foot volcanic ash column underscore the multi-dimensional dangers inherent to Mount Anak Krakatau. The tragic incident remains a sobering reminder of the formidable power of nature and the heavy sacrifices often demanded in the pursuit of truth and public information.

Islamic Perspective on Natural Disasters: Understanding the Status of Syahid for Victims

by Basiran
written by Basiran

Bencana Alam dan Keutamaan Syahid dalam Islam: Menjawab Pertanyaan Korban Gempa, Banjir, dan Longsor

Natural disasters such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, forest fires, flash floods, and massive landslides regularly cause catastrophic losses of life, infrastructure, and economic stability across various regions of the world. In disaster-prone areas, particularly nations situated along active seismic belts like the Ring of Fire, the recurrence of such calamities brings profound sorrow and collective mourning to communities. Amidst the immediate emergency response, search-and-rescue operations, and humanitarian aid distribution, deeper philosophical and theological questions invariably arise among the surviving family members and the broader community. Specifically, within the Islamic perspective, believers frequently ask whether individuals who perish as a result of sudden and devastating natural disasters are granted a special spiritual status, particularly the esteemed designation of mati syahid (martyrdom).

While Islamic theology does not classify every form of mortality as martyrdom, authoritative teachings transmitted through the traditions of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) explicitly outline specific categories of death that confer the immense spiritual rewards associated with martyrdom, even though the deceased did not perish on a traditional battlefield. Among these recognized conditions are individuals who die from being crushed under collapsing buildings or structural debris, those who perish due to drowning, and those afflicted by sudden, catastrophic plagues or internal ailments. These prophetic guidelines provide immense spiritual solace to grieving families, framing tragic loss within a framework of divine grace, mercy, and ultimate honor in the hereafter.

Understanding the Categorization of Martyrdom in Islamic Tradition

To comprehend how contemporary natural disaster victims fit into classical Islamic jurisprudence and theological discourse, scholars examine two primary types of martyrdom recognized in Islamic traditions: Syahid Dunia wal Akhirat (martyrs in this world and the hereafter) and Syahid Akhirat (martyrs in the hereafter only).

The first category traditionally applies to combatants who lose their lives while fighting in the cause of God to defend their faith and community. In this worldly life, they receive specific rulings regarding their funeral rites—they are buried in the garments they fell in, without undergoing the ritual washing (ghusl). The second category, however, encompasses individuals who die from specific causes outlined by Prophet Muhammad, such as epidemics, internal diseases, drowning, being crushed by structural collapses, or losing their lives in fires. While these individuals undergo standard Islamic funeral washing and shrouding, they are promised the divine reward and status of a martyr in the afterlife.

This distinction is crucial for contextualizing the experiences of natural disaster victims. When an earthquake triggers structural collapses, or when a flash flood overwhelms residential areas, the victims do not face death through conventional means; rather, they are overtaken by catastrophic environmental forces beyond human control. Islamic scholarship views these tragic events not merely as random occurrences, but as trials that, when endured with patience, can elevate the spiritual standing of the deceased.

Prophetic Traditions on the Categories of Martyrdom

The theological foundation for recognizing non-combatant martyrdom is derived from several well-documented sayings (hadiths) of Prophet Muhammad. These texts serve as the primary legal and spiritual reference for Islamic scholars when addressing contemporary tragedies.

One of the most authoritative narrations is recorded in the authentic collections of Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, narrated by Abu Hurairah (May Allah be Pleased with Him), in which the Prophet stated: "The martyrs are five: the one who dies of plague, the one who dies of a disease of the stomach, the one who drowns, the one who dies under debris, and the martyr in the cause of Allah."

This foundational narration explicitly establishes that physical trauma resulting from structural failure (such as being crushed under debris) and asphyxiation through water (such as drowning during floods) are direct pathways to the spiritual reward of martyrdom.

Furthermore, another comprehensive narration reported by Abu Dawud and An-Nasa’i, transmitted through Jabir bin ‘Atik (May Allah be Pleased with Him), expands this categorization significantly. The Prophet Muhammad stated: "There are seven types of martyrs other than those killed in the cause of Allah: the one who dies of the plague is a martyr; the one who dies of a stomach disease is a martyr; the one who drowns is a martyr; the one who dies of pleurisy or a chest disease is a martyr; the one who burns to death is a martyr; the one who dies under debris is a martyr; and the woman who dies during childbirth is a martyr."

These canonical texts collectively demonstrate that Islam recognizes the immense physical and psychological trauma associated with sudden, overwhelming disasters. By grouping victims of structural collapse, drowning, and fires alongside other severe trials, the prophetic tradition offers a profound theological reassurance that innocent lives lost to sudden calamities are met with divine honor and elevated spiritual ranks.

Relating Classical Prophetic Categories to Modern Natural Disasters

Applying these classical textual categories to contemporary natural disasters reveals a direct alignment between the causes of death specified by Prophet Muhammad and the realities faced by victims of modern environmental catastrophes.

In the case of massive earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, or severe landslides, buildings, residential homes, and public infrastructure frequently collapse. Individuals trapped beneath tons of concrete, earth, or rock fall directly under the classification of shahibul hadm—those who perish from being crushed beneath falling debris. The sheer velocity and destructive power of these events leave little to no time for escape, mirroring the suddenness implied in the prophetic texts.

Similarly, catastrophic flooding, tropical storms, tsunamis, and overflowing rivers frequently trap populations in rapidly rising waters. Victims who succumb to these aquatic surges are categorized as al-ghariq—those who perish by drowning. The inclusion of drowning as a form of martyrdom emphasizes the inherent terror and helplessness experienced by victims, which is met with divine recompense.

Moreover, wildfires, whether caused by extreme drought, volcanic heat, or human activity, frequently devastate entire communities, trapping residents before they can evacuate. Those who perish in these infernos are explicitly covered under the prophetic designation of individuals who die from burns (al-hariq). Additionally, the outbreak of waterborne or vector-borne diseases in the chaotic aftermath of large-scale disasters echoes the inclusion of plagues and internal illnesses within the traditional martyrdom framework.

By synthesizing these correlations, religious authorities consistently reassure affected populations that loved ones lost to natural disasters are regarded with immense dignity, theological grace, and the promise of an elevated standing in the hereafter.

The Broader Socio-Religious Implications for Disaster-Prone Communities

The recognition of natural disaster victims as attaining the status of martyrs carries profound sociological, psychological, and theological implications for communities regularly facing environmental hazards. Countries situated along major geological fault lines and tropical convergence zones experience immense psychological burdens due to the perpetual threat of natural calamities.

From a psychological perspective, grief management and trauma recovery among surviving relatives are deeply influenced by religious and cultural beliefs. Knowing that a loved one who died in a sudden flash flood or earthquake is spiritually honored provides a vital coping mechanism. It shifts the narrative of loss from meaningless tragedy to a framework of divine destiny, patience (sabr), and ultimate spiritual elevation. This theological framing helps mitigate existential despair and fosters collective resilience among survivors.

Furthermore, Islamic theology does not view the acknowledgment of martyrdom as an excuse for fatalism or environmental negligence. Alongside discussions of spiritual rewards, contemporary Islamic discourse increasingly emphasizes the concept of ecological stewardship, disaster preparedness, and proactive risk reduction. Religious leaders and environmental scholars frequently advocate for tobat ekologi (ecological repentance), urging societies to halt environmental degradation, deforestation, and unsustainable land use that exacerbate the severity of natural disasters.

Scholars argue that while accepting the decree of God brings peace to the hearts of the bereaved, human responsibility dictates that communities must actively implement robust early-warning systems, earthquake-resistant construction standards, and sustainable environmental management to minimize loss of life. The combination of spiritual solace for victims and practical responsibility for the living forms a comprehensive approach to handling the recurring challenges of natural disasters in vulnerable regions.

Bridging the Wealth Gap: BCA Highlights Massive Potential for Gen Z Investment Literacy Amid Low Penetration Rates Compared to Developed Markets

by Basiran
written by Basiran

JAKARTA — The penetration of investment products among the younger generation in Indonesia remains significantly lower than in developed economies such as the United States, presenting both a structural challenge and a vast frontier for financial growth. While financial institutions have observed a rising interest in wealth management across all demographics, the gap between market potential and actual participation underscores an urgent need for targeted financial education. PT Bank Central Asia Tbk (BCA), one of the nation’s largest private lenders, has identified this disparity as a prime opportunity to aggressively drive investment literacy, particularly among Generation Z and millennial cohorts.

The landscape of retail investing in Indonesia has shifted dramatically over the past half-decade, catalyzed by digital transformation, the proliferation of fintech applications, and shifting socioeconomic priorities among post-millennial demographics. Despite these tailwinds, local capital market participation rates lag behind Western counterparts. Industry stakeholders argue that closing this gap is not merely a corporate growth strategy, but a fundamental pillar for securing long-term national financial resilience and wealth distribution.

Decoding the Investment Landscape: Mass Market vs. High-Net-Worth Dynamics

Addressing media representatives during the official kickoff of the BCA Wealth Summit 2026 in Jakarta, BCA Director Haryanto T. Budiman provided a granular breakdown of the bank’s investor demographics. According to Haryanto, while the bank has successfully onboarded investors across virtually all customer segments, a distinct polarization exists between the volume of investors and the volume of capital under management.

The mass market segment currently commands the largest share in terms of raw investor count, driven by low-barrier digital onboarding processes and micro-investment options. However, the heavy lifting in terms of total asset value remains concentrated within the high-net-worth and affluent customer tiers.

"If we compare ourselves with developed nations, our market penetration is indeed still lower. Yet, paradoxically, this is precisely what constitutes a very substantial opportunity," Haryanto stated during the press conference.

This duality reveals a critical bottleneck in the Indonesian financial ecosystem: while millions of young Indonesians possess the digital literacy and baseline awareness required to open an investment account, many stall at the threshold of capital accumulation and sophisticated asset allocation. The challenge for financial institutions is no longer just about acquisition, but about progressive engagement—moving retail users from basic savings products to diversified portfolios encompassing mutual funds, bonds, and equities.

The Macroeconomic Context: Indonesia’s Demographic Dividend and Financial Literacy

To fully comprehend the gravity of BCA’s strategic pivot toward youth-focused financial education, one must examine the broader socioeconomic backdrop of Indonesia. The nation is currently traversing a critical phase of its demographic dividend, wherein the productive population (aged 15–64) constitutes the overwhelming majority of the total populace. Generation Z and millennials form the backbone of this demographic wave, entering the workforce at a time of rapid digital acceleration.

However, historical data from the Financial Services Authority (Otoritas Jasa Keuangan or OJK) and various independent economic think tanks indicate a persistent chasm between financial inclusion—the mere ownership of a bank account or financial product—and financial literacy, which entails the cognitive ability to make informed and effective decisions regarding personal financial resources.

While financial inclusion rates in Indonesia have surged past impressive thresholds over recent years, driven largely by government-backed digitalization initiatives and mobile money platforms, financial literacy has historically struggled to keep pace. In the realm of capital markets and long-term investments, this lag manifests as speculative behavior, vulnerability to illegal investment scams, and an underutilization of wealth preservation instruments.

When benchmarked against the United States—where stock market participation among households historically hovers around the 50% to 60% mark through direct holdings and retirement accounts like 401(k)s—Indonesia’s single-digit capital market investor penetration rate highlights an enormous runway for expansion. With a population exceeding 275 million and a rapidly expanding middle class, even a modest percentage point increase in youth investment participation translates into millions of new market participants and billions of rupiah in mobilized domestic capital.

BCA Wealth Summit 2026: Tailoring Strategies for the Digital Native

Recognizing that conventional, dense financial jargon and traditional banking seminars fail to resonate with digital-native generations, BCA has systematically revamped its outreach framework. The initiatives surrounding the BCA Wealth Summit 2026 reflect a concerted effort to dismantle psychological barriers that intimidate young retail investors.

The bank has committed to rolling out localized, simplified, and highly digestible educational modules designed specifically for Generation Z. These programs strip away complex financial engineering terminology, translating fundamental concepts—such as compound interest, risk-adjusted returns, asset diversification, and inflation hedging—into relatable, real-world applications.

Furthermore, the digital streaming sessions hosted as part of the BCA Wealth Summit series have been strategically curated. Panel topics, guest speakers, and case studies are chosen not based on institutional legacy preferences, but on the lifestyle, financial goals, and pain points unique to young professionals and students. These include navigating gig-economy cash flows, planning for early homeownership in an inflationary property market, and understanding sustainable or Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) investing trends that heavily resonate with younger demographics.

"We want them to understand investment products in a manner that is exceedingly easy to comprehend," Haryanto elaborated. "And our ultimate objective is to ensure that investment penetration continues on a steep upward trajectory for our youth."

Chronology of Retail Investment Growth in Indonesia

The evolution of modern retail investing in Indonesia can be traced through several critical milestones over the past decade:

  • 2017–2018 (The Fintech Awakening): The emergence of robo-advisors and digital mutual fund super-apps begins to dismantle traditional barriers to entry, allowing retail investors to open accounts digitally without physical document mailing.
  • 2019–2020 (The Pandemic Catalyst): COVID-19 lockdowns serve as an unexpected catalyst. Confined to their homes, a massive wave of young urbanites turns to capital markets, triggering an exponential surge in Single Investor Identification (SID) registrations recorded by the Indonesian Central Securities Depository (KSEI).
  • 2021–2023 (Consolidation and Regulatory Tightening): Following explosive growth, market regulators and commercial banks face challenges related to speculative trading and unregulated financial influencers ("finfluencers"). This prompts a renewed, formalized focus by major institutions like BCA on foundational investor education.
  • 2024–2026 (Institutional Scaling and Wealth Management Shifts): Major financial institutions shift from generic mass-acquisition campaigns to segmented, personalized wealth management ecosystems, leveraging hybrid digital-advisory models to capture the burgeoning Gen Z demographic ahead of their prime earning years.

Industry Implications and the Broader Economic Impact

The implications of successfully converting Indonesia’s youth into active, disciplined investors extend far beyond the balance sheets of commercial banks like BCA. A mature domestic investor base serves as a crucial economic shock absorber. Historically, emerging markets have suffered acute capital flight during global macroeconomic downturns due to a heavy reliance on foreign portfolio investments (hot money). By fostering a robust, highly populated domestic retail investor class, Indonesia can build a stable, resilient domestic capital buffer that supports long-term national development projects, state-owned enterprise issuances, and corporate expansions.

From a microeconomic perspective, early participation in wealth management addresses looming structural crises, such as the inadequacy of traditional pension systems to support an aging population. By instilling systematic saving and investing habits during early career stages, Gen Z individuals insulate themselves against future economic volatility, healthcare inflation, and systemic career disruptions.

Financial analysts note that commercial banks spearheading this educational shift stand to capture significant long-term loyalty. Customers who begin their financial journeys with a specific institution via basic mutual funds or fractional bonds often migrate upward through the wealth spectrum as their personal incomes grow, eventually transitioning into lucrative mortgage, corporate advisory, and high-net-worth private banking segments.

Strategic Outlook: Overcoming Remaining Hurdles

Despite the optimism surrounding Indonesia’s demographic dividend and the proactive measures taken by financial institutions, industry observers emphasize that sustaining this momentum requires coordinated multi-stakeholder participation.

Key challenges that remain include combating the proliferation of predatory, unregulated trading platforms and high-yield investment scams that frequently target financially naive youths on social media channels. Financial literacy initiatives must not only promote the benefits of investing but also actively educate young consumers on risk assessment, regulatory verification via official databases, and the dangers of speculative leverage.

Moreover, macroeconomic pressures—such as fluctuating interest rate environments, persistent inflation, and domestic employment dynamics—directly impact the disposable income available for discretionary investment among entry-level workers. Ensuring that financial education addresses budgeting and emergency fund creation prior to active market participation is vital to preventing premature market exit driven by financial distress.

As BCA and other financial heavyweights press forward with digital-first literacy campaigns through platforms like the Wealth Summit series, the foundation for an empowered, financially literate generation is steadily solidifying. By turning a comparative disadvantage—low baseline penetration relative to developed economies—into an expansive growth runway, Indonesia’s financial sector is positioning its youth not merely as passive consumers, but as active architects of the nation’s future economic prosperity.

Building Quranic Habits as the Foundation for Progressive Muslim Character and Institutional Integrity in Muhammadiyah

by Basiran
written by Basiran

The pursuit of spiritual and personal development within Islamic organizations often begins with the conscious establishment of daily routines grounded in divine revelation. This core theme took center stage during a recent gathering hosted by the Central Leadership (Pimpinan Pusat/PP) of Muhammadiyah in Yogyakarta. The event underscored the critical need for modern Muslims to move beyond the superficial recitation of scripture and instead internalize its principles to cultivate a progressive mindset, professional integrity, and emotional resilience in an increasingly complex world.

The Setting and Background of the Monthly Staff Assembly

The discussion unfolded during the routine Monthly Staff Assembly organized for employees and officials of the PP Muhammadiyah. Held at the main auditorium of the PP Muhammadiyah Office in Yogyakarta on a Wednesday, the gathering drew a significant audience of administrative staff, organizational leaders, and community members. These monthly gatherings serve as an institutional cornerstone for spiritual enrichment, organizational alignment, and intellectual discourse within one of Indonesia’s largest Islamic reformist movements.

As part of its ongoing efforts to nurture human resources that align with the vision of Islam Berkemajuan (Progressive Islam), the leadership frequently invites prominent figures from autonomous bodies and affiliated organizations to share insights. For this specific session, the organizers invited Syahdara Anisa Makruf, the Chairperson of the Regional Leadership of Nasyiatul Aisyiyah (PWNA) for the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY). Speaking under the overarching theme "Quran Habit, Becoming a Progressive Muslim," Anisa delivered a comprehensive lecture that bridged personal spiritual habits with institutional effectiveness.

The Complex Psychology of Habit Formation

Opening her address, Anisa dissected the intricate psychology behind habit formation, noting that establishing routines rooted in Quranic values is far from a simple endeavor. Human behavior is rarely shaped in a vacuum; rather, it is a complex product of various intersecting influences, including early family upbringing, social environments, and the constant influx of sensory inputs encountered in daily life—what individuals routinely see, hear, and experience.

Because these external and internal factors often pull individuals in competing directions, Anisa emphasized that developing authentic Quranic habits requires deliberate and consistent effort. In this context, a "Quran habit" transcends the traditional view of mere rote reading or ritualistic recitation. Instead, it demands a holistic internalization where the ethical, moral, and practical injunctions of the holy text manifest visibly in daily actions, professional duties, and interpersonal relationships.

Time Discipline and the Wisdom of Surah Al-Asr

A primary focal point of the lecture was the cultivation of time discipline, which Anisa identified as an essential stepping stone toward personal and professional success. Drawing from her own upbringing, she highlighted how fundamental temporal discipline is to a structured life.

"The first habit instilled in our family was not about raising us to be exceptionally smart children, but rather establishing the primary foundation of performing the five daily prayers punctually," Anisa shared during the assembly.

In Islamic teachings, the five daily prayers serve not only as a spiritual obligation but also as a strict temporal framework that organizes the believer’s day. Punctuality in prayer trains the human psyche to respect time, a finite resource heavily emphasized in Surah Al-Asr. The Quranic injunction to value time serves as a divine reminder that human existence is fleeting, necessitating its investment in righteous deeds, constructive work, and mutual encouragement toward truth and patience.

When translated into a professional environment, this spiritual discipline morphs into punctuality, effective time management, and accountability. Employees who master time management through the lens of daily prayers are better equipped to navigate tight deadlines, balance competing priorities, and execute their duties with precision.

Emotional Regulation and Cognitive Clarity

Beyond temporal discipline, the integration of Quranic study into daily routines plays a vital role in emotional regulation and mental well-being. Anisa pointed out that reading the Quran while actively striving to understand its semantic and contextual meanings creates a sanctuary for mental peace.

In a fast-paced working environment fraught with deadlines, administrative challenges, and interpersonal friction, the ability to regulate one’s emotions is paramount. Emotional intelligence prevents impulsive reactions, enabling individuals to navigate crises with composure and make sound, objective decisions. By turning to the Quran for spiritual grounding, believers cultivate a sense of inner tranquility that buffers them against external stressors. This psychological resilience is particularly crucial for staff members working within large socio-religious organizations like Muhammadiyah, where public accountability and community service often demand high levels of emotional stamina.

Strengthening Institutional Integrity and Loyalty in Muhammadiyah

Shifting her focus from personal development to organizational dynamics, Anisa elaborated on how these spiritual and psychological habits directly apply to the institutional framework of Muhammadiyah. She stressed that integrity and loyalty are indispensable traits that must be continuously cultivated among members and personnel entrusted with the affairs of the movement.

Within the context of Muhammadiyah, institutional integrity is manifested through unwavering discipline, professional responsibility, absolute honesty, and emotional maturity when executing assigned roles. It requires staff and leaders to perform their duties not merely as a transactional employment arrangement, but as a moral trust (amanah) entrusted by the community and accountable before God.

Furthermore, organizational loyalty goes far beyond mere physical attendance at meetings or superficial participation in programmatic activities. True loyalty, according to Anisa, requires actively safeguarding the core values, philosophical foundations, and overarching mission of the reformist movement.

"Integrity and loyalty are among the habits that we must deepen for the sake of the Muhammadiyah organization, keeping in mind that loyalty to Muhammadiyah means protecting the values and the trust of the organization," Anisa asserted.

Effective Communication and Assertive Culture in the Workplace

Another critical dimension addressed during the assembly was the implementation of an assertive culture within the workplace, anchored in Islamic communication ethics. Assertiveness—defined as the capacity to express opinions, professional needs, and operational boundaries clearly and firmly without infringing upon or harming others—is vital for harmonious workplace collaboration.

Employees must possess the confidence to articulate their perspectives and manage task boundaries in accordance with their specific job descriptions. However, this assertiveness must be balanced with professional courtesy and mutual respect, particularly when handling disagreements or complex institutional challenges.

This communicative ethos finds direct support in Islamic jurisprudence and scripture, notably in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 83, which commands believers to speak kindly and justly to all people. By combining assertiveness with benevolent communication, Muhammadiyah institutions can foster an organizational culture that values constructive feedback, transparent dialogue, and collaborative problem-solving while minimizing toxic workplace dynamics.

The Imperative of Self-Reflection and Continuous Improvement

Concluding her comprehensive presentation, Anisa highlighted the indispensable habit of self-reflection (muhasabah). A truly progressive Muslim, she argued, possesses the introspective capacity to evaluate not only the shortcomings of others but, more importantly, their own operational and spiritual failures.

Self-reflection provides a necessary pause in a busy schedule, allowing individuals to review past actions, recognize personal and professional deficiencies, and design actionable roadmaps for future improvement. This habit ensures that individuals do not stagnate after merely acquiring theoretical knowledge of right and wrong, but instead commit to a lifelong trajectory of moral and professional refinement.

Broader Implications for Progressive Muslim Communities

The insights shared during the PP Muhammadiyah Monthly Staff Assembly carry profound implications for contemporary Islamic organizations navigating the challenges of modernity. By framing "Quran habits" not as isolated acts of worship, but as an integrated lifestyle encompassing time management, emotional resilience, organizational integrity, assertive communication, and continuous self-reflection, the movement reinforces its foundational ethos of Islam Berkemajuan.

Ultimately, the transformation from a nominal follower to a progressive Muslim relies on the systemic translation of scriptural values into concrete behavioral patterns. When institutions systematically foster these habits among their workforce, they not only elevate individual performance but also secure the long-term sustainability, moral authority, and societal impact of their organizational mission.

Presiden UEA Ingatkan Netanyahu tentang Serangan Hamas 7 Oktober, Ini 5 Faktanya

by Basiran
written by Basiran

The political landscape in Israel has been thrust into a state of heightened volatility following explosive allegations that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was warned by the President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed (MBZ), about an impending large-scale operation by Hamas just days before the October 7, 2023, attacks. These allegations, which have been categorically denied by the Prime Minister’s Office as “absolute lies,” have nonetheless provided significant ammunition to opposition leaders who argue that the government’s security failures were not merely systemic but rooted in a pattern of negligence at the highest level of leadership.

The report, initially detailed by the Israeli newspaper Haaretz and drawing from forthcoming research by veteran journalists Shlomi Eldar and Ruti Yuval, suggests that a 45-minute telephone conversation took place between Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed and Prime Minister Netanyahu approximately ten days prior to the massacre. During this exchange, the UAE President allegedly signaled that Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar was orchestrating a major move against Israel that threatened to destabilize the entire region. The fallout from these reports comes at a critical juncture for Israel, with national elections approaching and public trust in the current administration hovering at historical lows.

Chronology of the Warning and Escalating Tensions

To understand the severity of these allegations, one must look at the timeline of events leading up to the October 7 attack. In mid-September 2023, communications transmitted through a Palestinian mediator indicated that Yahya Sinwar was preparing for what was described as an "earthquake"—a metaphorical reference to a seismic shift in the regional status quo. According to the Haaretz report, when this information was relayed to the Israeli leadership, the Prime Minister’s reaction was perceived as surprisingly composed. Netanyahu reportedly assured the UAE leadership that Israel’s intelligence and military apparatus were fully prepared for any potential scenario, effectively downplaying the specific urgency of the warning.

The days following this alleged call saw little visible change in Israel’s security posture along the Gaza border. The Israeli military maintained its standard operational tempo, and the intelligence community remained focused on broader regional threats, primarily from Iran and its proxy network. This period, characterized by a sense of false security among the political elite, is now being re-examined through the lens of potential missed opportunities to preempt or mitigate the disaster that eventually unfolded on the morning of October 7.

The Opposition’s Call for Accountability

The political reaction to these reports has been swift and severe. A rare, unified front of opposition figures—including former military chief Gadi Eisenkot, former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, Yisrael Beiteinu leader Avigdor Lieberman, and Yair Golan—issued a joint declaration demanding a formal, transparent inquiry into what they characterized as a systemic failure of governance.

"The Israeli public deserves to know the truth," the statement read. "What did Netanyahu know, at what time did he receive this information, why was the security cabinet not briefed, and why was there no proactive effort to safeguard civilians?"

Former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett was particularly pointed in his assessment, taking to the social media platform X to label the alleged failure to act upon the warning as "criminal negligence." His rhetoric reflects a growing sentiment within the opposition that the October 7 tragedy was not inevitable, but rather the result of a leadership vacuum. Yair Lapid, another former Prime Minister, echoed these sentiments, noting that he had repeatedly warned about the possibility of a large-scale conflict in the months leading up to the attack. Lapid asserted that had the government properly prioritized these warnings and adjusted its strategic posture, the scale of the massacre could have been significantly curtailed.

Contextualizing the Intelligence Landscape

The allegations surrounding the UAE warning fit into a broader, complex tapestry of intelligence failures that have been scrutinized since the October 7 attacks. For years, the Israeli defense establishment operated under the prevailing assumption that Hamas was deterred from a full-scale conflict. This “conception” (or konsepsiya in Hebrew) was predicated on the belief that Hamas prioritized governance in Gaza over military confrontation, despite mounting evidence to the contrary.

Data from the period preceding the attack suggests that while there were numerous signals of activity, the integration of these signals into a coherent warning was flawed. Egyptian intelligence officials have also gone on record in various international outlets claiming they provided warnings to the Netanyahu government regarding an “explosion” of violence emanating from Gaza. When these international warnings are combined with the alleged UAE communication, they paint a picture of a Prime Minister who was perhaps insulated by his own conviction that the status quo was sustainable.

Government Response and the Defense of Leadership

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has remained steadfast in its denial of the report. In an official statement, the PMO dismissed the allegations as a fabrication designed to undermine the government during a period of national crisis. Supporters of the Prime Minister argue that such reports are part of a coordinated political campaign aimed at forcing an early election and shifting the blame for the security collapse away from the military and intelligence agencies, which failed to prevent the breach of the border fence.

The legal and political implications of these denials are significant. If the reports are proven accurate, they could potentially lead to a breach of public trust that would make the current government’s continuation untenable. Conversely, if the reports are proven to be inaccurate or distorted, they may serve as a reminder of the toxic, highly polarized media environment that exists in Israel, where leaks and counter-leaks are frequently used as weapons of political warfare.

Broader Impact and Regional Implications

The involvement of the UAE in this narrative adds a layer of diplomatic complexity. The UAE, a signatory to the Abraham Accords, has maintained a delicate balancing act since October 7, condemning the violence while attempting to preserve its strategic relationship with Israel. If the President of the UAE did indeed provide a direct, high-level warning, it underscores the importance of the intelligence-sharing mechanisms established under the Abraham Accords. It also highlights the frustration felt by regional partners who see their warnings ignored by a leadership they perceive as distracted by internal political survival.

The implications for regional stability are equally profound. The perception that Israel was warned but failed to act threatens to complicate future intelligence-sharing efforts. Furthermore, the internal debate within Israel about the culpability of the Prime Minister has effectively paralyzed parts of the legislative process, as the country struggles to balance the ongoing war effort with the necessity of addressing the leadership failures that preceded it.

Conclusion: A Nation at a Crossroads

As the investigation into the failures of October 7 continues, the report concerning the UAE warning serves as a flashpoint for a much deeper national reckoning. Whether this specific warning was ignored due to political hubris, a fundamental misunderstanding of Hamas’s intentions, or simply the overwhelming noise of disparate intelligence inputs, remains the subject of intense debate.

The history of the October 7 tragedy will eventually be written through the findings of state commissions and independent inquiries. However, the immediate impact of these allegations is a further fracturing of Israeli society. The demand for accountability is not merely a political tactic by the opposition; it is a fundamental requirement of a democracy facing the aftermath of its greatest security failure since the 1973 Yom Kippur War. As the nation looks toward the upcoming elections, the question of who knew what—and why they failed to act—will likely define the political discourse for years to come. The veracity of the UAE warning report will be a critical piece of that puzzle, serving either as a final indictment of a leadership that looked away or as a cautionary tale about the dangers of political misinformation in a time of war.

Mount Anak Krakatau Eruption Disruption: Why Volcanic Ash Halts Aviation and Threatens Jet Engines

by Basiran
written by Basiran

The eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau in early September 2026 has sent towering plumes of volcanic ash high into the atmosphere, critically disrupting air travel across major regions of Indonesia including Java and Sumatra, and forcing the temporary closure of multiple international and domestic airports. While passengers frequently assume that flight cancellations during volcanic activity are solely a precaution for reduced visibility, aviation authorities and geological experts emphasize that the danger runs far deeper. Volcanic ash is not ordinary dust; it is a complex, highly abrasive mixture of sharp rock fragments, minerals, and glass shards that poses a catastrophic threat to aircraft structural integrity and jet engine functionality.

As the crisis unfolds, over 1,500 flights have been canceled or severely delayed, stranding approximately 170,000 passengers nationwide. The aviation sector’s stringent response highlights the unforgiving physics of jet engines encountering microscopic silicate particles. With ash plumes reportedly reaching staggering altitudes of up to 50,000 feet on the Sumatra side, commercial airlines, air traffic controllers, and disaster mitigation agencies remain locked in high-stakes coordination to prevent potential airborne disasters.

Chronology and Escalation of the 2026 Eruption

The volcanic unrest at Anak Krakatau—situated in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra—intensified late in August 2026, culminating in a major explosive event during the first week of September. The initial eruption propelled thick columns of ash into the stratosphere, where prevailing wind patterns rapidly transported the particulate matter across heavily populated and economically vital regions, blanketing parts of West Java, Lampung, and even metropolitan Jakarta.

By September 6, 2026, satellite tracking and pilot reports confirmed that the volcanic cloud had ascended to an altitude of roughly 50,000 feet. This elevation placed the hazardous material directly inside the cruising altitudes utilized by commercial wide-body and narrow-body aircraft. In response to the encroaching plumes, the Ministry of Transportation, in collaboration with AirNav Indonesia, ordered the immediate suspension of operations at eight major airports across the affected zones. Major transportation hubs, including Juanda International Airport in East Java, reported dozens of immediate flight cancellations, triggering widespread logistical bottlenecks and compelling citizens in urban centers to hunt for protective face masks against respiratory hazards.

The Deadly Mechanics of Volcanic Ash Inside Jet Engines

To understand why a seemingly distant volcanic cloud can ground an entire fleet of modern aircraft, one must examine the physical and chemical properties of volcanic ash. Unlike common meteorological clouds composed of water droplets or ice crystals, volcanic ash consists of pulverized rock and hard, abrasive mineral crystals.

When a commercial airliner flies through an ash cloud, these microscopic particles are ingested in massive quantities by the high-bypass turbofan engines. Inside a jet engine, operating temperatures routinely exceed 1,400 degrees Celsius (2,550 degrees Fahrenheit)—far above the melting point of volcanic glass, which typically ranges between 800 and 1,200 degrees Celsius.

Upon entering the combustion chamber and turbine sections, the solid ash particles melt into a liquid state. As this molten material is pushed further back into the engine, it encounters the cooler turbine stator vanes and rotor blades. Here, the liquid glass solidifies rapidly, forming a hard, rock-like glaze. This buildup chokes the internal cooling passages, disrupts smooth airflow, and causes rapid compressor stalls. Furthermore, the relentless abrasive action of un-melted ash particles rapidly erodes turbine blades, compressor casings, and fuel nozzles, drastically reducing engine thrust and, in worst-case scenarios, inducing a complete engine flameout.

Historical Precedents and Aviation Safety Statistics

The aviation industry’s cautious protocol regarding volcanic ash is forged through past disasters. According to historical data compiled by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and international aviation safety bodies, encounters between aircraft and volcanic ash clouds have frequently escalated into life-threatening emergencies.

A watershed moment in aviation history occurred in 1982, when a British Airways Boeing 747 flying from London to Auckland inadvertently entered a dense, unmapped ash cloud generated by the eruption of Mount Galunggung in West Java, Indonesia. The microscopic abrasive particles stripped the aircraft’s cockpit windshields of their transparency and sandblasted the landing lights. Crucially, all four jet engines ingested massive quantities of ash, resulting in simultaneous flameouts. The aircraft plunged approximately 25,000 feet in a desperate glide before the flight crew successfully restarted three of the engines, eventually executing a miraculous emergency landing at Jakarta’s Halim Perdanakusuma Airport with zero fatalities.

Broader USGS data tracking international incidents up to 2009 documents 129 direct encounters between commercial aircraft and volcanic ash clouds. Of those documented events, 79 resulted in varying degrees of severe mechanical damage, while nine incidents involved total engine failure while airborne. These historical scars explain why modern aviation regulators maintain a zero-tolerance policy toward flying anywhere near active volcanic plumes.

Beyond the Engines: Cockpit Visibility and Structural Wear

While catastrophic engine failure represents the most dramatic hazard, volcanic ash threatens multiple secondary systems on an aircraft. The sharp, angular nature of the silicate particles acts like industrial sandpaper when hurled against an aircraft moving at hundreds of miles per hour.

Cockpit windshields exposed to even brief encounters with volcanic ash are instantly pitted and etched, reducing forward visibility to zero—a perilous condition compounded by the frequent failure of onboard electrical sensors. Pitot tubes, which measure airspeed, can become clogged with ash, providing erroneous data to flight instruments and confusing automated flight-control computers.

Moreover, prolonged exposure to lower concentrations of volcanic aerosols accelerates the mechanical wear and tear on fuselage skin, control surface hinges, and air-conditioning intake filters. Airlines forced to fly near peripheral ash zones face exorbitant maintenance bills, requiring meticulous engine borescope inspections and complete replacements of compromised components before an aircraft is cleared to return to service.

The Illusion of Altitude and the Challenge of Detection

A common question raised by frustrated travelers is why aircraft cannot simply fly higher or lower to bypass the ash cloud. The dynamics of volcanic eruptions render this workaround ineffective in many scenarios.

Unlike localized storm clouds that occupy predictable atmospheric tiers, volcanic ash can be thrust deep into the stratosphere, stretching across multiple vertical layers. In the case of the Anak Krakatau eruption, ash plumes reaching 50,000 feet surpassed the maximum service ceiling of standard commercial airliners, which typically cruise between 31,000 and 43,000 feet. Additionally, upper-level wind shear can distort and spread ash over thousands of square kilometers in unpredictable directions, making vertical evasion a high-risk gamble.

Compounding the navigation challenge is the fact that volcanic ash clouds are notoriously difficult to detect. Unlike traditional rain clouds or dense fog, dry ash clouds often blend seamlessly with ordinary meteorological clouds or appear transparent on standard weather radar systems, particularly at night or under low-light conditions. Pilots cannot always rely on visual cues until they are already inside the danger zone. Consequently, authorities rely heavily on a sophisticated network of ground-based vulcanologists, meteorological satellites, Volcanic Ash Advisory Centers (VAAC), and real-time pilot reports to map shifting hazard zones.

Socioeconomic Implications and Official Responses

The immediate closure of eight airports across Java and Sumatra, alongside the cancellation of over 1,500 flights, demonstrates the far-reaching economic toll of natural disasters on national infrastructure. Airlines face severe revenue losses from grounded fleets and passenger compensation claims, while tourism operators in key Indonesian destinations report immediate cancellations.

Government ministries, including the Ministry of Transportation and the National Board for Disaster Management (BNPB), have defended the sweeping closures as an unavoidable sacrifice for public safety. Aviation authorities stress that while logistical delays and stranded passengers cause immense short-term frustration, preventative groundings successfully eliminate the existential risk of mid-air catastrophes.

As Mount Anak Krakatau continues its intermittent eruptive cycle, disaster management teams remain on high alert, continuously updating airspace restrictions in real time. For the traveling public, the ongoing disruption serves as a stark reminder of the immense raw power of geological forces and the uncompromising safety margins required to navigate the skies safely.
