Queen Máxima Concludes High-Level Mission to Indonesia as UN Special Advocate for Financial Health to Strengthen Economic Resilience and Inclusion

by Neng Nana
written by Neng Nana

JAKARTA – Her Majesty Queen Máxima of the Netherlands has officially concluded a comprehensive four-day working visit to Indonesia, spanning from Monday, November 24, to Thursday, November 27, 2025. While she is widely recognized as the Dutch monarch, this specific diplomatic mission was conducted in her specialized capacity as the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Advocate (UNSGSA) for Financial Health. This role, which she has held since 2009, focuses on the critical importance of financial services in fostering development, reducing poverty, and enhancing the overall well-being of citizens across the globe.

The visit marked a significant milestone in the long-standing partnership between the United Nations and the Indonesian government regarding financial inclusion. Queen Máxima’s itinerary was strategically designed to evaluate Indonesia’s progress in digital financial services and to pivot the conversation toward "financial health"—a concept that goes beyond mere access to bank accounts and focuses on whether individuals can effectively manage their day-to-day finances, recover from economic shocks, and achieve long-term financial goals. Over the course of the week, the Special Advocate traversed several regions, including Sragen and Solo in Central Java, the capital city of Jakarta, and Bekasi in West Java.

A Legacy of Advocacy in Indonesia

This mission represents Queen Máxima’s fifth visit to the Indonesian archipelago, reflecting the country’s status as a key partner in the global financial inclusion agenda. Her previous visits in 2012, 2016, and 2018 were also conducted in her capacity as the UNSGSA, during which she advocated for the National Strategy for Financial Inclusion (SNKI). In 2020, she visited Indonesia alongside King Willem-Alexander for a state visit, highlighting the multifaceted relationship between the Netherlands and Indonesia.

Since her first visit in 2012, Indonesia has made remarkable strides in expanding financial access. According to data from the Financial Services Authority (OJK), Indonesia’s financial inclusion rate has risen from approximately 67.8% in 2016 to over 85% in recent years, with a government target of reaching 90% by the end of 2024. However, the UNSGSA’s current mission emphasizes that "access" is only the first step. The focus must now shift to "usage" and "quality," ensuring that financial products actually improve the lives of the poor and the marginalized.

Field Operations: Sragen and Solo

The working visit commenced in earnest on Tuesday, November 25, in Central Java. Queen Máxima first visited a garment factory in Sragen Regency. The choice of location was deliberate; the manufacturing sector is a primary employer for women in Indonesia. By observing how workers receive their wages—shifting from cash-in-hand to digital payroll systems—the Special Advocate highlighted how digital wage payments can serve as an entry point for workers to access savings, insurance, and credit.

Following the factory visit, the delegation traveled to the historic Kampung Batik Laweyan in Solo. This area is a hub for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), which form the backbone of the Indonesian economy, contributing over 60% of the national GDP. In Solo, Queen Máxima engaged with local artisans and business owners to discuss the challenges of maintaining financial health amidst fluctuating global demand and rising production costs.

A pivotal moment of the day occurred at Pura Mangkunegaran, where she participated in a forum hosted by Women’s World Banking. This session brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including university students, young entrepreneurs, and female micro-business owners. The discussions centered on the "gender gap" in financial inclusion. While Indonesia has performed well compared to its peers, women-led businesses often still face higher hurdles in securing formal credit. Queen Máxima listened to testimonials regarding how digital literacy and tailored financial products have empowered these individuals to expand their businesses and secure their families’ futures.

Innovative Solutions: The Intersection of Finance and Environment

On Wednesday, November 26, the focus shifted toward institutional collaboration and innovative housing finance. The morning began with a high-level roundtable discussion at the United Nations office in Jakarta, involving various development organizations. The dialogue focused on harmonizing international support for Indonesia’s financial health initiatives.

The Special Advocate then met with representatives from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group. The meeting explored the development of credit products that not only stimulate economic growth but also ensure that borrowers do not fall into debt traps. This is particularly relevant as Indonesia sees a surge in "fintech" and peer-to-peer lending, which requires robust consumer protection frameworks.

One of the most unique stops of the trip was at the Gran Harmoni Cibitung subsidized housing complex in Bekasi, West Java. This project serves as a model for low-to-middle-income housing with an environmental twist: the homes are designed to be low-emission. During her visit, Queen Máxima entered the home of a local resident to discuss the realities of homeownership for first-time buyers.

The highlight of the Bekasi visit was the observation of an innovative program by Bank Tabungan Negara (BTN) that allows residents to pay a portion of their mortgage installments using "waste credits" earned through a local garbage bank (Bank Sampah). Residents collect and sort recyclable waste, which is then valued and converted into financial credits. Queen Máxima praised this synergy between financial inclusion, social protection, and environmental sustainability, noting that such creative models could be replicated in other developing nations to help the urban poor build assets.

Corporate Responsibility and Employee Well-being

Later on Wednesday afternoon, Queen Máxima visited the offices of Deloitte Indonesia in Jakarta. The discussion moved from the informal sector to the formal corporate environment. She urged employers to take an active role in the financial health of their workforce. The Special Advocate argued that when employees are financially secure and have access to the right tools to manage their money, productivity increases and turnover decreases. This segment of the visit underscored the idea that financial health is a shared responsibility between the government, the private sector, and the individual.

Strategic Dialogue with President Prabowo Subianto

The final day of the mission, Thursday, November 27, was dedicated to high-level policy and statecraft. Queen Máxima participated in a financial literacy agenda alongside the leaders of Indonesia’s primary financial institutions: the Financial Services Authority (OJK), Bank Indonesia (BI), and the Ministry of Finance. These institutions have been instrumental in creating the regulatory "sandboxes" that allow for digital innovation while maintaining financial stability.

The culmination of the visit was a bilateral meeting with President Prabowo Subianto at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta. This meeting was of significant diplomatic importance, as it provided an opportunity for the UNSGSA to present her findings from the field directly to the head of state. President Prabowo, who has prioritized poverty alleviation and food security in his administration’s "Asta Cita" program, welcomed the insights.

During their "four-eyes" meeting and subsequent luncheon, the two leaders discussed how digital public infrastructure (DPI)—such as biometric ID systems and instant payment rails—can be leveraged to distribute social subsidies more efficiently. Queen Máxima emphasized that Indonesia’s success in digitalization is a beacon for other countries, but cautioned that the "digital divide" must be closed to ensure that those in remote areas are not left behind.

Implications for Indonesia’s Economic Future

The visit of Queen Máxima comes at a time when Indonesia is seeking to elevate its status on the global stage, including its bid to join the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Strengthening the financial resilience of its population is a key requirement for such a transition.

Analysts suggest that the Queen’s focus on "financial health" rather than just "inclusion" marks a sophisticated shift in policy. As the global economy faces headwinds, including climate change and supply chain disruptions, the ability of Indonesian households to withstand shocks is paramount. The "Garbage Bank" mortgage model and the focus on digital wage payments for garment workers are practical examples of how micro-level interventions can lead to macro-level stability.

Furthermore, the involvement of the Ministry of Finance and Bank Indonesia indicates a unified front in tackling financial literacy. Despite high levels of mobile phone penetration, many Indonesians still lack the "financial capability" to navigate complex financial products. The UNSGSA’s visit has acted as a catalyst for these agencies to renew their commitment to education and consumer protection.

As Queen Máxima departs Jakarta, the mission leaves behind a roadmap for the next phase of Indonesia’s economic development. The transition from a nation of "account holders" to a nation of "financially healthy citizens" will be the true measure of success for the initiatives discussed during this four-day tour. The collaboration between the UN and the Indonesian government continues to serve as a global benchmark for how international advocacy can be translated into tangible local impact.

Semarang Faces Enumerator Exodus and Payment Dispute Amidst Crucial 2026 Economic Census Preparations

by Neng Nana
written by Neng Nana

The Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) Semarang City has confirmed a significant wave of resignations among its data collection personnel for the upcoming 2026 Economic Census, coinciding with allegations of stalled wage payments to these vital field partners. Rudi Cahyono, Head of BPS Semarang City, addressed the growing concerns on Saturday, July 18, 2026, acknowledging that 30 enumerators had withdrawn from their duties, a development that casts a shadow over the meticulous preparations for this critical national data collection effort. The total workforce mobilized by BPS Semarang for the 2026 Economic Census stands at 1,437 enumerators, making the departure of 30 individuals, while numerically small, a potent indicator of underlying challenges.

The Unfolding Situation: Enumerator Resignations and Their Causes

Cahyono clarified that the 30 resignations were not a synchronized mass exodus but rather a staggered process, occurring based on individual circumstances. He firmly asserted that these departures were primarily due to external factors rather than any internal issues within the BPS Semarang operations or the census project itself. According to his breakdown, a significant portion—approximately 50 percent, or 16 individuals—resigned because they had secured permanent employment elsewhere, a common occurrence for temporary contract workers engaged in large-scale government surveys. The remaining enumerators cited a variety of personal reasons: five individuals withdrew due to illness, others were compelled to leave to care for elderly parents, and some found it challenging to manage their time effectively between academic commitments and the demanding schedule of data collection.

However, the departure of these enumerators comes with a specific contractual implication: those who resign, even after having commenced work, are not eligible to receive their honorarium. Cahyono emphasized that this policy is explicitly stipulated in the Work Agreement Letter (SPK) signed by all partners. "In accordance with the provisions in the SPK, if they resign, they do not receive their honorarium," he stated, highlighting the strict adherence to contractual terms that BPS Semarang maintains. Given the tight deadlines inherent in the 2026 Economic Census, BPS Semarang is now faced with the immediate task of recruiting and training replacements to ensure that data collection remains on schedule and does not compromise the integrity or completeness of the census. "This is so that the work can continue," Cahyono added, underscoring the urgency of the situation.

Allegations of Payment Delays and Contractual Ambiguities

The issue of enumerator resignations has unfortunately converged with more serious allegations regarding the timely disbursement of wages, with reports suggesting that payments to data collection partners in Semarang have been "macet" or stalled. These claims have fueled discontent among the remaining workforce and raised questions about the BPS’s financial management practices for such a large-scale operation. While BPS Semarang acknowledges the concern, Rudi Cahyono vehemently denied any alteration to the agreed-upon contract terms or payment mechanisms. He reiterated that BPS Semarang meticulously follows the provisions outlined in the initial SPK, ensuring transparency and fairness in all financial transactions. "We have not changed the payment mechanism. Everything still refers to the initial SPK," Cahyono asserted when pressed on the rumored contract modifications.

The core of the payment dispute appears to revolve around the interpretation of Clause 8, Paragraph (3), Letter (a) of the SPK, which governs the conditions for the first-term payment. This clause states that the initial payment is disbursed after the enumerator completes 40 percent of their total workload. However, the ambiguity arises because the SPK does not explicitly delineate what constitutes this "total workload" in terms of specific deliverables, particularly regarding Statistical Blocks (SLS). Enumerators reportedly interpreted "40 percent of the total workload" as exclusively pertaining to the completion of a certain number of SLS, which are geographically defined areas containing a group of households or businesses to be enumerated.

Cahyono offered a detailed explanation of BPS Semarang’s interpretation: "In the SPK, it’s 40 percent of the task load. This task load includes SLS and its assignments. So, when an officer is given 10 SLS, for example, 40 percent of that is four. When the total assignments are 1,000, then 40 percent is 400." He further clarified, "So, the fulfillment meant is having completed 40 percent of their workload from those two components, namely SLS and its assignments." This explanation suggests that the workload encompasses not just the physical completion of statistical blocks but also the associated administrative and data entry tasks, or "assignments," that accompany them. The discrepancy between the enumerators’ understanding and BPS’s interpretation seems to be a major friction point, potentially leading to perceived delays if enumerators believe they have met their quota based on SLS alone, while BPS awaits completion of other associated tasks.

A copy of the SPK obtained by Republika indeed confirms that the said clause regarding the first-term payment does not explicitly mention the fulfillment of SLS. It broadly refers to the completion of "40 percent of the total workload." This lack of explicit detail in the contractual language could understandably lead to different interpretations among the diverse workforce. Cahyono acknowledged this potential for misunderstanding, suggesting that many enumerators might not have fully grasped the nuances of the payment mechanism. He pointed out that BPS Semarang conducts weekly briefings every Friday, where such payment procedures are regularly communicated. "Perhaps this information has not been fully understood by our field officers," he speculated, indicating a need for clearer, more accessible communication channels regarding contractual obligations.

Beyond the contractual interpretation, Cahyono also highlighted the bureaucratic realities of government payments. He explained that even once enumerators meet the 40 percent workload threshold, the actual disbursement of funds is not instantaneous. Citing Minister of Finance Regulation (PMK) Number 190/PMK.05/2012, which governs state financial management, he noted that the processing of claims to the state can take up to 17 working days after the right to claim arises. This regulatory framework means that an enumerator completing their 40 percent workload on, for example, July 15, 2026, should not expect immediate payment on that date, but rather within the stipulated 17-day window. This delay, while legally mandated, can still create financial strain and frustration for temporary workers relying on timely income.

Background: The 2026 Economic Census – A National Imperative

The 2026 Economic Census (SE2026) is not merely a regional undertaking for Semarang but a monumental national project with far-reaching implications for Indonesia’s economic future. Conducted every ten years, the Economic Census by BPS is the most comprehensive data collection exercise on the nation’s economic activities. Its primary objective is to map the entire economic landscape of Indonesia, encompassing all types of businesses, from micro-enterprises and small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) to large corporations across various sectors, excluding agriculture, which is covered by a separate agricultural census.

The data gathered from SE2026 will serve as the backbone for national economic planning, policy formulation, and investment promotion for the next decade. It provides crucial insights into the structure of the economy, business demographics, employment patterns, capital investment, and regional economic disparities. Policymakers rely on this data to design targeted programs for MSME development, assess the impact of regulations, identify new growth sectors, and inform infrastructure development. For investors, the census offers a detailed understanding of market potential, supply chains, and consumer behavior. Without accurate and complete data from SE2026, the government’s ability to make informed decisions and steer the nation towards sustainable economic growth would be severely hampered. Semarang, as a bustling provincial capital and a significant economic hub in Central Java, plays a particularly crucial role in contributing to this national dataset, making the smooth execution of the census in this region paramount.

The Role and Challenges of Enumerators

Enumerators, or data collection partners, are the frontline soldiers of any census. Their role is arduous, requiring meticulous attention to detail, strong communication skills, and resilience. They are tasked with visiting thousands of businesses, often door-to-door, to conduct interviews, explain complex questionnaires, and accurately record sensitive economic data. The job is physically demanding, involving extensive travel within designated statistical blocks, and intellectually challenging, as they must ensure data quality and consistency.

For many, becoming an enumerator offers a temporary income opportunity and a chance to contribute to a national cause. However, the temporary nature of the work often means limited benefits, and reliance on timely payments for their livelihood. Previous censuses, both economic and population, have highlighted common challenges faced by enumerators, including difficulties in accessing respondents, dealing with uncooperative businesses, working in remote or challenging terrains, and the psychological stress of meeting demanding targets. Payment delays, ambiguous contract terms, and a lack of clear grievance mechanisms can severely demotivate these crucial personnel, potentially impacting the quality and speed of data collection. The BPS’s large workforce of 1,437 enumerators in Semarang underscores the massive logistical and human resource management challenge involved in such an undertaking.

Implications and Broader Context

The issues unfolding in Semarang, while localized, carry broader implications for the success of the entire 2026 Economic Census and the public’s trust in BPS. A significant number of resignations can lead to delays in data collection, requiring BPS to expend additional resources on recruitment and training of new personnel, which in turn can impact the overall timeline and budget. More critically, high turnover can affect data quality. New enumerators, despite training, may not immediately achieve the same level of proficiency or consistency as experienced personnel, potentially introducing variations in data collection methodologies.

The dispute over payment terms highlights a common challenge in large-scale government contracts involving temporary workers: the need for absolute clarity in contractual language. Ambiguity in the SPK, particularly concerning what constitutes "40 percent of the total workload," creates a fertile ground for misunderstanding and mistrust. This situation underscores the importance of not just having legal contracts but ensuring that these contracts are easily comprehensible by all parties, especially those without legal training. Effective communication, beyond formal briefings, is essential to bridge the gap between institutional interpretation and field-level understanding.

Furthermore, perceived payment delays, even if technically within regulatory frameworks like PMK 190/PMK.05/2012, can severely demoralize a temporary workforce. For individuals relying on this income, a delay of 17 working days can create significant financial hardship, leading to a loss of enthusiasm, reduced productivity, and potentially further resignations. This situation in Semarang could serve as a cautionary tale for other BPS regional offices and government agencies undertaking similar large-scale temporary employment projects, emphasizing the need for robust HR systems, clear contractual terms, and efficient payment processing mechanisms that prioritize the well-being of their field partners.

Moving Forward: Remedial Actions and Oversight

BPS Semarang’s immediate priority is to swiftly replace the 30 enumerators who have resigned to prevent further disruptions to the census timeline. This will involve accelerated recruitment drives and intensive training programs to bring new personnel up to speed. Beyond this immediate fix, the incident calls for a proactive review of BPS’s engagement strategies with its temporary workforce.

To prevent similar issues in the future, BPS could consider several measures:

  1. Enhanced Contract Clarity: Revisiting the SPK to make the "total workload" definition for payment explicitly clear, perhaps with examples or a detailed breakdown of components (SLS, assignments, data entry, quality checks).
  2. Improved Communication: Beyond weekly briefings, BPS could implement more interactive and accessible communication channels, such as FAQs, dedicated helplines, or digital platforms, where enumerators can quickly get clarifications on contract terms and payment status.
  3. Financial Literacy and Expectation Management: Providing enumerators with clear information at the outset about the payment processing timeline, including the 17-day grace period stipulated by the Ministry of Finance, to manage expectations and alleviate anxiety.
  4. Grievance Mechanism: Establishing a clear and responsive grievance mechanism for enumerators to address payment issues, contractual disputes, or other work-related concerns promptly.
  5. Exit Interviews: Conducting exit interviews with resigning enumerators to gather detailed feedback on their reasons for leaving, which can provide valuable insights for improving working conditions and retention strategies.

The Ministry of Finance, as the body responsible for state financial regulations, may also need to monitor the implementation of PMK 190/PMK.05/2012 in the context of large-scale temporary contracts to ensure that while fiscal prudence is maintained, the welfare of temporary government partners is not unduly compromised by bureaucratic delays.

In conclusion, the situation in Semarang serves as a microcosm of the immense logistical and human resource challenges inherent in conducting a national census. While BPS Semarang asserts its adherence to contractual obligations and regulatory frameworks, the concurrent issues of enumerator resignations and payment disputes highlight the critical need for absolute clarity, transparent communication, and empathetic management of its temporary workforce. The success of the 2026 Economic Census, a cornerstone of Indonesia’s future economic planning, ultimately hinges on the effective resolution of these issues and the sustained motivation of the thousands of dedicated individuals on its front lines.

Understanding the Distinctions Between Economic Development and Economic Growth in Modern National Strategy

by Neng Nana
written by Neng Nana

The global economic landscape is frequently defined by two terms that are often used interchangeably in casual conversation but remain distinct in the realms of macroeconomics and national policy: economic growth and economic development. While both concepts are essential indicators of a nation’s health, they represent different dimensions of progress. Economic growth is primarily a quantitative measure of an economy’s expansion, typically reflected in the increase of goods and services produced. In contrast, economic development is a qualitative and multi-dimensional process that encompasses structural changes, technological advancements, and improvements in the overall quality of life for the citizenry. Understanding these nuances is critical for policymakers, investors, and the general public as nations strive to balance industrial output with social welfare.

The Fundamental Framework: Quantitative vs. Qualitative Progress

At its core, the distinction between these two concepts lies in their scope. Economic growth is a narrower metric. It focuses on the numerical increase in a country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) or Gross National Product (GNP) over a specific period. It is concerned with the "how much" of an economy—how many more cars were manufactured, how much more grain was harvested, and how many more services were rendered compared to the previous year. This growth is often driven by the optimization of the factors of production: land, labor, capital, and entrepreneurship.

Economic development, however, is a much broader paradigm. It is rooted in normative values and the lived experience of the individual. While growth looks at the "size of the pie," development looks at how the pie is made, what it consists of, and how it is distributed among the population. Development is inherently linked to the reduction of poverty, the narrowing of inequality, and the enhancement of human capabilities. It asks whether the economic activities of a nation are leading to better healthcare, higher literacy rates, and more robust infrastructure. In the context of national planning, growth is often seen as a necessary precursor to development, yet growth can occur without development if the wealth generated does not translate into social progress.

The Role of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) as a Divider

The most common benchmark used to differentiate these two concepts is the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), known in Indonesia as Produk Domestik Bruto (PDB). GDP measures the total market value of all final goods and services produced within a country’s borders in a specific timeframe.

In the context of economic growth, the focus is strictly on the percentage increase of this figure. If a nation’s GDP rises from $1 trillion to $1.05 trillion, the economy has grown by 5%. This figure is vital for tracking inflation and market health. For instance, the valuation of stocks, the stability of the currency, and the attractiveness of a nation to foreign investors are often tied to these growth percentages.

Conversely, economic development examines the implications of GDP growth. It analyzes whether the increase in production is accompanied by a rise in the standard of living. Development indicators look beyond the raw numbers to see if the GDP growth is sustainable and if it is being driven by improvements in institutional frameworks. For example, if a country’s GDP grows solely due to the extraction of natural resources while its education system fails and its poverty rate remains stagnant, that country is experiencing growth without development.

Perbedaan Pembangunan Ekonomi dengan Pertumbuhan Ekonomi

Demographic Dynamics: GDP and Population Growth

A critical indicator used by economists to separate growth from development is the relationship between GDP and population size. Economic growth can be recorded even if the population is increasing at a faster rate than the economy itself. However, from a developmental standpoint, this scenario is problematic.

Economic development specifically monitors the percentage increase in GDP relative to the percentage increase in the population. For true development to occur, the rate of economic expansion must outpace the rate of population growth. This ensures that the "per capita" income is rising, providing individuals with more purchasing power and a higher quality of life. If a population grows by 3% while the GDP grows by only 2%, the average citizen is effectively becoming poorer, regardless of the fact that the total economy is "growing." Therefore, development-oriented policies often include family planning and human capital investment to ensure that the demographic trajectory aligns with economic goals.

Technological Advancement and the Infrastructure Dividend

The evolution of Science and Technology (IPTEK) serves as another major differentiator. Economic development is characterized by structural shifts—moving from an agrarian economy to an industrial one, or from an industrial economy to a service- and technology-based one. This requires a fundamental change in how a society operates.

A prime example of economic development in action can be seen in the massive infrastructure projects undertaken in metropolitan hubs, such as the Light Rail Transit (LRT) and Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) systems in the Jakarta-Bogor-Depok-Bekasi (Jabodebek) area. These projects, which saw investments reaching approximately Rp 29.9 trillion for the LRT alone, are more than just additions to the national balance sheet. They represent a qualitative shift in urban mobility, environmental sustainability, and technological integration.

While the construction of these systems is a sign of development because it introduces new technology and improves societal efficiency, the subsequent management of these systems—such as the adjustment of ticket prices based on inflation and market demand—falls under the umbrella of economic growth. Growth ensures the financial viability of the service, while development ensures that the service exists to improve the lives of the citizens.

Social Welfare and the Human Development Index

The final and perhaps most significant indicator is the impact on public welfare. Economic development is explicitly concerned with whether the increase in national wealth is followed by an increase in the well-being of the people. This is often measured through the Human Development Index (HDI), which tracks life expectancy, education, and per capita income.

In a growth-centric model, a rise in the production of luxury goods might boost GDP significantly. However, a development-centric model would prioritize whether that wealth is being utilized to build hospitals (RSUD), schools, and public utilities. The transition of a vacant lot into a regional general hospital is a quintessential example of development. It provides a long-term social benefit that enhances the productivity and health of the workforce, which in turn fuels future growth.

Perbedaan Pembangunan Ekonomi dengan Pertumbuhan Ekonomi

Comparative Analysis: A Summary of Differences

To provide a clear overview, the differences can be categorized into four primary dimensions:

  1. Emphasis on PDB: Economic growth focuses on the numerical increase in PDB. Economic development focuses on the structural changes and the quality of that PDB.
  2. Demographic Focus: Economic growth does not necessarily account for population increases. Economic development requires that PDB growth exceeds population growth to ensure improved per capita welfare.
  3. Scientific and Technological Progress: Economic development is driven by and results in advancements in IPTEK. Economic growth can occur within existing technological frameworks without requiring innovation.
  4. Public Welfare: Economic growth tracks market values and inflation. Economic development tracks the distribution of wealth and the improvement of living standards.

Implications for Future Economic Policy

The distinction between these two concepts is not merely academic; it has profound implications for how a country manages its future. In the modern era, there is an increasing shift toward "Sustainable Development." This concept suggests that growth must not only be qualitative but also environmentally and socially responsible.

Experts argue that a singular focus on growth can lead to "boom and bust" cycles, where rapid expansion is followed by environmental degradation and social unrest due to inequality. By focusing on development, governments can create a more resilient economy. For instance, investing in green energy technology is an act of development that may have high initial costs (potentially slowing short-term growth) but ensures long-term stability and a higher quality of life.

Conclusion: The Symbiotic Relationship

Ultimately, economic growth and economic development are two sides of the same coin. A nation cannot achieve significant development without the resources generated by growth, and growth cannot be sustained indefinitely without the structural improvements provided by development.

As observed in the development of transportation infrastructure like the LRT or the construction of public health facilities, the goal of modern economics is to harmonize these two forces. By understanding that growth provides the means and development provides the end, a society can move toward a future where "progress" is measured not just by the numbers on a ledger, but by the health, happiness, and opportunity available to every citizen. The challenge for the next generation of economists and leaders will be to ensure that as the GDP climbs, the dignity and welfare of the population climb along with it.

President Prabowo Subianto’s Lighthearted Remark on Polri’s Institutional Placement Ignites Discussion on Indonesia’s Security Architecture

by Neng Nana
written by Neng Nana

Jakarta, Indonesia – President Prabowo Subianto, during a large-scale harvest festival with the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) in Malang, East Java, on Friday, July 17, made a lighthearted remark about the Indonesian National Police (Polri) not being under the Ministry of Defense (Kemenhan) like the TNI. The comment, delivered with a chuckle, garnered widespread attention, drawing focus to the distinct institutional frameworks governing Indonesia’s primary security forces and the historical journey that led to their current separation. The event, held as part of a broader national food security initiative, brought together key figures including National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto, and Minister of Defense Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, underscoring inter-agency cooperation despite their differing administrative structures.

A Moment of Camaraderie Amidst National Endeavors

The President’s humorous quip emerged during his address at the "Panen Raya" (Grand Harvest) event, an initiative highlighting the military’s role in supporting national food security programs. These events are crucial for demonstrating the government’s commitment to self-sufficiency in food production and often involve significant logistical support from the TNI, showcasing their dual function beyond conventional defense. It was in this setting, while reminiscing about his tenure as Minister of Defense under former President Joko Widodo, that Prabowo recounted an experience with the domestically produced PT Pindad Maung tactical vehicle.

"When I was Minister of Defense, I was presented with an option, ‘Sir, the TNI…’ At that time, I was the Minister of Defense, so I couldn’t handle the Polri, sorry, the police don’t want to be under the Minister of Defense, do they?" Prabowo stated, his words punctuated by laughter from both himself and the assembled dignitaries and audience. The remark, though delivered playfully, immediately resonated with the historical and administrative realities of Indonesia’s security apparatus.

The Genesis of the Maung: A Testament to Domestic Defense Industry

Prabowo’s anecdote about the Maung vehicle provided the immediate context for his jest. He explained that during his time as Minister of Defense, he was presented with two options for a military jeep. One was a foreign-made vehicle, reportedly cheaper and of good quality. The other was the Maung, a product of Indonesia’s state-owned defense industry firm, PT Pindad, which came at a somewhat higher price point.

"Well, I chose the more expensive one, a bit more expensive, but it’s a product of Indonesian children themselves, namely the Maung. Which is now used by our officers, they now use the Maung," he proudly declared. This decision underscored a broader government policy under President Widodo, which Prabowo staunchly supported, to prioritize domestic defense production and reduce reliance on foreign imports.

The PT Pindad Maung, an acronym for ‘Harimau’ (Tiger), is a light tactical vehicle designed for various military and paramilitary applications. First publicly unveiled in 2020, it quickly gained traction for its rugged design, adaptability, and the symbolic value of being an indigenous product. The vehicle is capable of navigating diverse terrains, offers modularity for different weapon systems or troop transport, and represents a significant step forward for Indonesia’s ambition to develop a self-reliant defense industrial base. Its adoption by TNI officers, as highlighted by Prabowo, signifies a successful integration of local innovation into the nation’s defense capabilities, fostering technological independence and creating jobs within the country. This commitment to domestic production is not merely economic; it is a strategic imperative to ensure supply chain resilience and national sovereignty in critical defense sectors.

Institutional Architectures: TNI Under Kemenhan, Polri Directly Under President

The core of Prabowo’s jocular remark lies in the fundamental difference in the institutional placement of the TNI and Polri within the Indonesian state structure. This distinction is a cornerstone of Indonesia’s post-reformasi democratic framework, established after the fall of the New Order regime in 1998.

  • The Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI): Comprising the Army (TNI AD), Navy (TNI AL), and Air Force (TNI AU), the TNI is constitutionally mandated for national defense. Administratively and budgetarily, the TNI falls under the Ministry of Defense (Kemenhan). The Minister of Defense, a civilian appointee, is responsible for formulating defense policy, managing the defense budget, procurement, and administrative oversight of the armed forces. While the operational command of the TNI remains with the TNI Commander, who reports directly to the President, the Kemenhan plays a crucial role in ensuring civilian control and accountability over the military. This structure is a standard practice in many democratic nations, designed to ensure that the armed forces serve the state under civilian leadership rather than acting as an independent political entity.

Kelakar Prabowo ke Kapolri: Polisi Enggak Mau di Bawah Menhan Sih

  • The Indonesian National Police (Polri): In contrast, the Polri, responsible for internal security, law enforcement, and maintaining public order, operates directly under the President. This separation from the Ministry of Defense was a critical reform aimed at demilitarizing law enforcement and preventing the concentration of power that characterized the New Order era, where both military and police functions were often intertwined under the Armed Forces (ABRI). The direct reporting line to the President is intended to ensure political accountability and prevent the police from becoming an instrument of a specific ministry or political faction, while still maintaining its independence in operational matters. The police budget is typically managed through the State Secretariat, with the President having direct authority over the appointment and dismissal of the National Police Chief.

Historical Context and the Spirit of Reformasi

The institutional separation of the TNI and Polri is a direct legacy of the "Reformasi" movement following the resignation of President Suharto in 1998. Prior to this, both military and police forces were integrated under the Armed Forces of the Republic of Indonesia (ABRI), with the military often playing a dominant role in internal security and political affairs. This dual function (Dwi Fungsi ABRI) was widely criticized for blurring the lines between defense and internal security, leading to human rights abuses and undermining democratic principles.

The key legislative milestones in this separation include:

  • 1999: The establishment of the Ministry of Defense as a separate entity from the TNI, marking the beginning of civilian oversight.
  • 2000: The formal separation of Polri from the TNI, placing it under the direct command of the President. This was codified through various presidential decrees and subsequently strengthened by the Law on the Indonesian National Police (Law No. 2 of 2002).
  • 2004: The Law on the Indonesian National Armed Forces (Law No. 34 of 2004) further solidified the TNI’s role as a professional defense force, explicitly defining its mission and ensuring its accountability to civilian authority through the Minister of Defense.

These reforms were monumental, designed to professionalize both institutions, ensure their adherence to democratic principles, and prevent a return to the authoritarian practices of the past. The clear division of labor—TNI for external defense, Polri for internal security and law enforcement—is considered vital for maintaining checks and balances and strengthening democratic governance.

Analyzing the Implications of Prabowo’s Remark

While President Prabowo’s comment was delivered in a jovial manner, it nonetheless touches upon a sensitive and historically significant aspect of Indonesia’s security architecture.

  • A Lighthearted Acknowledgment of Status Quo: On one level, the remark can be seen as a casual acknowledgment of the existing institutional arrangement, perhaps even a nod to the Polri’s distinct identity and independence. It highlighted that the current structure is a deliberate choice, not an oversight.
  • Subtle Nod to Past Debates: Some analysts suggest that even a humorous statement from a figure like Prabowo, a former general and Minister of Defense, can subtly evoke historical debates or underlying sentiments within the security establishment. There have been sporadic discussions in the past, primarily within academic or policy circles, about the optimal placement of Polri – whether its operational effectiveness might benefit from a closer alignment with the defense ministry or a dedicated Ministry of Internal Security. However, the overwhelming consensus, particularly among civilian governance advocates, strongly favors the current separation to uphold democratic principles and prevent military overreach.
  • Reinforcing Civilian Control: Ironically, by highlighting the Polri’s independence from Kemenhan, Prabowo implicitly reinforced the principle of civilian control. The President, as the supreme commander of both forces, ultimately holds the authority, and the direct reporting line of Polri to the presidency is a testament to this civilian supremacy in internal security matters.
  • Prabowo’s Perspective as Former Kemenhan: Coming from Prabowo, who has a deep understanding of defense and military affairs, the remark also offers a glimpse into his perspective. As a former Minister of Defense, he was intimately involved in the administrative and strategic oversight of the TNI. His comment could be interpreted as a practical reflection on the scope of his previous ministerial responsibilities, which explicitly excluded the police.

Reactions and Expert Perspectives

While there were no immediate official "reactions" to Prabowo’s joke, the context provides grounds for inferring potential perspectives from relevant stakeholders:

  • Polri’s Stance: The Indonesian National Police has consistently emphasized its role as a professional, civilian law enforcement agency responsible for maintaining public order and upholding the law. Any suggestion of being placed under the Ministry of Defense would likely be met with reaffirmation of its current status as a direct presidential subordinate, vital for its independence and civilian character. Police leadership frequently stresses their commitment to community policing and their distinct mandate from the military.
  • Defense Analysts: Security and defense analysts generally view the current separation as a critical achievement of Indonesia’s democratic transition. Dr. Conny Rahakundini Bakrie, a prominent defense analyst, has often underscored the importance of clear distinctions between defense and security mandates to prevent a return to the blurred lines of the past. Such analysts would likely reiterate that placing Polri under Kemenhan would risk re-militarizing internal security, potentially undermining human rights protections and democratic oversight. They would argue that the current structure provides a necessary check and balance, with the TNI focusing on external threats and Polri on internal law and order, each accountable through different, albeit ultimately presidential, channels.
  • Political Observers: Political observers would likely interpret the remark as a characteristic display of Prabowo’s direct and sometimes informal communication style. They might also see it as an indicator that while he now leads the nation, his past experience as Minister of Defense continues to inform his understanding of the various state institutions and their relationships. The humor serves to defuse any potential tension while subtly touching upon significant institutional realities.

Broader Impact and Future Outlook

The incident, though brief and lighthearted, serves as a useful reminder of the fundamental principles underpinning Indonesia’s modern security architecture. The institutional separation of the TNI and Polri is not merely an administrative detail but a deeply symbolic and functional cornerstone of the nation’s democratic consolidation. It ensures that the use of force, both for external defense and internal security, remains accountable to the civilian government and, ultimately, to the people.

As President, Prabowo Subianto now oversees both institutions. His leadership is expected to continue strengthening the professionalization of both the TNI and Polri, ensuring they uphold their respective mandates within a democratic framework. The "Panen Raya" event itself, where the remark was made, further highlights the government’s holistic approach to national security, extending beyond traditional defense to encompass food security and national resilience, often requiring seamless cooperation between various state actors, including the military and police, despite their distinct chains of command. The ongoing development of a robust domestic defense industry, exemplified by the Maung vehicle, also remains a critical component of this overarching national strategy, aiming for greater self-reliance and technological sovereignty.

Iran’s Military Command Declares Unconditional Surrender for US and Israel as Peace Deal Finalized

by Neng Nana
written by Neng Nana

TEHRAN – The General Headquarters of Khatam al-Anbiya, Iran’s central military command, has issued a triumphant declaration asserting that the United States and "Zionist Israel" have been left with no viable option but to accept defeat and surrender. This potent statement arrives amidst Tehran’s confirmation of a finalized Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United States, signaling the cessation of hostilities. The pronouncement, released on Monday morning, June 15, 2026, lauded the resilience of the Iranian populace and declared a "glorious victory" over its adversaries.

The communiqué extended its commendations to all personnel serving within the armed forces and the broader "resistance front," acknowledging their unwavering resolve throughout what the statement characterized as "more than 100 days of war." This period of intense conflict, as described by the Iranian military leadership, has culminated in what they perceive as a decisive strategic triumph, compelling their adversaries to acknowledge their inability to achieve their objectives.

"By the grace of Almighty God and under the command of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, the Iranian people and their combatants have proven that the contemptible enemies, America and the Zionists [Israel], have no option but to accept defeat and surrender," the statement, as reported by Tasnim News Agency, emphatically declared. This assertion underscores Iran’s narrative of having successfully imposed its will upon its perceived nemeses, framing the resolution not as a negotiated peace but as a capitulation by the opposing forces.

The supreme military command further elaborated on this theme, stating, "The divine will and the steel-like resolve of the Iranian nation now stand as an unyielding barrier against all forms of aggression," thereby reinforcing the idea that the path of resistance remains the sole determinant of victory. This rhetoric positions Iran as a steadfast defender of its principles and interests, capable of withstanding and ultimately overcoming external pressures.

Background and Escalation of Hostilities

The current geopolitical climate, which has led to this declaration of impending surrender, stems from a protracted period of escalating tensions between Iran and the United States, often with Israel as a significant point of contention. While the exact commencement date of the "more than 100 days of war" remains subject to interpretation, it is widely understood to encompass a series of significant escalatory events that began in early 2026.

These events likely included a complex interplay of proxy conflicts, cyber warfare, economic sanctions, and direct confrontations in strategically sensitive regions. Analysts suggest that the conflict may have been triggered by a specific incident, such as an alleged attack on critical infrastructure, a naval incident in the Persian Gulf, or a significant escalation of proxy warfare in a third country. The prolonged nature of the conflict, exceeding three months as described, indicates a deep-seated strategic rivalry rather than a short-lived skirmish.

The Iranian narrative of forcing surrender suggests that the recent MoU is not a reciprocal agreement but a de facto acknowledgment of Iran’s strategic gains and the United States’ and Israel’s inability to achieve their objectives through military means or economic coercion. This perspective implies that Iran has successfully leveraged its regional influence, asymmetric warfare capabilities, and perhaps even its nuclear program’s perceived proximity as deterrents.

The Memorandum of Understanding: A De Facto Surrender?

The confirmation of a finalized Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Iran and the United States marks a critical juncture. While the specifics of this agreement have not been publicly disclosed, the Iranian military’s interpretation paints a stark picture. The wording "finalization of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to end the war" suggests a formal agreement to de-escalate and cease active hostilities.

However, the accompanying rhetoric from the Iranian command frames this as a capitulation. This implies that the terms of the MoU likely involve significant concessions from the US and Israel, possibly including the lifting of certain sanctions, a halt to direct or indirect military support for adversaries of Iran, and potentially a broader acknowledgment of Iran’s regional influence. The absence of any mention of reciprocal concessions from Iran suggests that their perceived victory is the primary driver of the agreement.

From an analytical standpoint, such a declaration of "surrender" from a major global power like the United States, even if framed as an MoU to end a war, would represent a profound geopolitical shift. It would necessitate a re-evaluation of regional power dynamics and potentially embolden other state and non-state actors challenging Western influence.

Timeline of Key Developments (Inferred)

While a precise, officially released timeline of the "more than 100 days of war" and subsequent negotiations is not available, an inferred chronology based on the provided information can be constructed:

  • Early March 2026 (approx.): Initiation of the conflict, characterized by escalating tensions and direct or proxy confrontations. This period is referred to by Iran as the beginning of the "more than 100 days of war."
  • March – June 2026: Sustained period of hostilities, involving significant military engagements, cyber activities, and potentially economic warfare. Iran claims to have consistently imposed its will during this phase.
  • Late May – Early June 2026: Diplomatic overtures and back-channel negotiations, likely initiated due to the protracted and potentially costly nature of the conflict for all parties involved. Iran’s declaration suggests these negotiations were driven by the realization of impending defeat by the US and Israel.
  • June 14, 2026: Confirmation by Tehran of the finalization of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United States, aimed at ending the war.
  • June 15, 2026: Issuance of the strong statement by the General Headquarters of Khatam al-Anbiya, declaring the unconditional surrender of the US and Israel and celebrating the victory.

Supporting Data and Context

To understand the gravity of Iran’s declaration, it is crucial to consider the broader context of its military and geopolitical standing. Iran has consistently pursued a strategy of asymmetric warfare, leveraging its missile capabilities, drone technology, and network of regional proxies (such as Hezbollah, Houthi rebels, and various Shi’a militias) to counter conventional military superiority.

In recent years, Iran has invested heavily in its ballistic missile program, developing a formidable arsenal capable of reaching targets across the Middle East. Its drone program has also seen significant advancements, with reports indicating its use in various regional conflicts. Furthermore, Iran’s nuclear program, while officially stated to be for peaceful purposes, remains a point of international concern and a significant factor in regional security calculations.

The "resistance front" mentioned in the statement refers to a coalition of allied states and non-state actors that align with Iran’s anti-Western and anti-Israeli stance. This network provides Iran with significant strategic depth and the ability to project power indirectly, making it a formidable adversary even for militarily superior nations.

The "100 days of war" likely involved a multifaceted conflict, potentially including:

  • Cyberattacks: Disruptions to critical infrastructure, financial systems, and military communications.
  • Missile and drone strikes: Targeted attacks on military assets, naval vessels, or strategic installations.
  • Proxy warfare: Increased activity and support for allied groups in regions like Yemen, Syria, Lebanon, and Iraq.
  • Naval confrontations: Incidents in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, crucial for global oil transit.
  • Economic warfare: Intensified sanctions and counter-sanctions, aimed at crippling the economies of adversaries.

The fact that Iran claims to have forced a surrender suggests that its asymmetric strategies have proven highly effective, perhaps more so than anticipated by its adversaries.

Official Responses and Inferred Reactions

The official statement from Iran’s military command is unequivocal. The triumphant tone and the explicit assertion of "surrender" leave little room for ambiguity regarding their perception of the outcome.

Inferred Reactions from Related Parties:

  • United States: Given the declared "surrender," the US government’s official response would likely be more muted, focusing on the successful de-escalation of conflict and the achievement of specific security objectives through diplomatic means. However, behind the scenes, there would be immense pressure to explain the narrative shift and the perceived concessions. The US might emphasize that the MoU was a pragmatic step to avoid further bloodshed and that it secured critical US interests.
  • Israel: For Israel, the declaration of surrender by its primary regional adversary would be a deeply concerning development, even if framed as a victory for Iran. Tel Aviv would likely express strong reservations about any agreement that legitimizes or strengthens Iran’s regional influence and would likely reiterate its commitment to its own security and its right to self-defense. They might also criticize the US for any perceived appeasement.
  • Regional Allies of Iran: Countries and non-state actors within Iran’s "resistance front" would undoubtedly celebrate this declaration as a major victory, reinforcing their own narratives and potentially increasing their assertiveness in their respective regions.
  • International Community: Global reactions would likely be mixed, ranging from cautious optimism about the end of hostilities to deep concern about the shifting regional power balance. Major powers would likely call for transparency regarding the MoU and urge all parties to uphold international law and regional stability.

Broader Impact and Implications

The ramifications of this declared "surrender" and the finalization of the MoU are profound and far-reaching:

  • Shifting Regional Power Dynamics: If Iran has indeed forced the US and Israel to the negotiating table under duress and secured concessions, it would signify a significant realignment of power in the Middle East. Iran’s regional influence would be considerably enhanced, potentially leading to increased assertiveness from Tehran and its allies.
  • Impact on International Alliances: The perceived weakening of US resolve or strategic retreat could strain its alliances in the region and globally, prompting allies to reconsider their security arrangements and potentially seek greater autonomy or alternative security partnerships.
  • Economic Consequences: The lifting of sanctions, if part of the MoU, could lead to a significant economic boost for Iran, enabling it to rebuild its economy and further invest in its military and strategic objectives. Conversely, it could lead to market volatility and a reevaluation of investment strategies in the region.
  • Future of Proxy Conflicts: With a perceived victory, Iran might feel emboldened to continue or even expand its support for proxy groups, potentially leading to prolonged instability in conflict zones where these groups are active.
  • Nuclear Proliferation Concerns: If the MoU involves any concessions related to Iran’s nuclear program without a clear and verifiable pathway to denuclearization, it could heighten concerns about nuclear proliferation in the region, potentially spurring other nations to pursue their own nuclear capabilities.
  • Narrative Warfare: The declared "surrender" is a powerful narrative tool for Iran. Its ability to frame the outcome as a victory, regardless of the precise terms of the MoU, strengthens its ideological standing and its appeal to anti-Western and anti-Israeli sentiments globally.

In conclusion, the statement from Iran’s General Headquarters of Khatam al-Anbiya represents a pivotal moment, not just in the context of the immediate conflict but in the broader geopolitical landscape. The declaration of unconditional surrender by the United States and Israel, coupled with the finalization of an MoU, suggests a dramatic shift in regional power and a potent demonstration of Iran’s strategic assertiveness. The world will be closely watching for the unveiling of the MoU’s details and the subsequent adjustments in international relations and regional stability.

by Neng Nana
written by Neng Nana

JAKARTA, Indonesia – Lepas, a prominent brand in the new energy vehicle (NEV) sector, is significantly bolstering its global presence by solidifying its identity as a lifestyle-based NEV brand. This strategic pivot is a cornerstone of a broader expansion initiative aimed at entrenching its position across diverse international markets. At the heart of this ambitious undertaking is the introduction of the innovative "Elegant Lifestyle House" concept, which serves as the foundational framework for delivering premium experiences. This conceptual approach is designed to forge a closer connection between Lepas’s product offerings and the evolving needs of consumers, with a particular emphasis on markets like Indonesia.

The brand’s commitment to this vision was underscored at the recent 2026 International Business Summit, where Lepas unveiled an updated iteration of its core concept. This refined approach masterfully integrates cutting-edge technology, sophisticated design principles, and a holistic lifestyle philosophy within a cohesive, interconnected ecosystem. The objective is to transcend the purely functional aspect of mobility, transforming it into an experience that is seamlessly relevant to the daily lives of its users.

This strategic maneuver comes at a time when the global automotive industry is undergoing a profound transformation, driven by the accelerating adoption of electric vehicles and a growing consumer demand for vehicles that reflect personal values and aspirations. Lepas’s focus on the lifestyle dimension positions it to capitalize on this trend, differentiating itself from competitors who may primarily emphasize technological specifications or price points. The NEV market, projected to reach over $1 trillion globally by 2028 according to industry analysts, presents a fertile ground for brands that can effectively blend innovation with consumer desires.

Global Partner Conference Marks a New Era of Structured Network Expansion

Further demonstrating its commitment to global outreach, Lepas convened its inaugural Global Partner Conference in Wuhu, China, from April 26th to 28th, 2026. This significant event brought together over 500 partners hailing from nearly 20 countries and regions, heralding a new phase in the systematic development of a more robust and structured global network. The conference served as a crucial platform for fostering collaboration, sharing strategic insights, and solidifying partnerships essential for sustained international growth.

The "Elegant Lifestyle House" concept is more than just a marketing slogan; it represents a tangible strategy for creating an immersive brand ecosystem. This concept likely encompasses several key elements:

  • Vehicle Design: Lepas vehicles are expected to feature sophisticated aesthetics, premium materials, and advanced interior technologies that enhance comfort and user experience. The design language will likely reflect a blend of modern minimalism and elegant sophistication, appealing to consumers who value both form and function.
  • Connectivity and Digital Integration: The vehicles will be equipped with advanced connectivity features, allowing seamless integration with users’ digital lives. This could include intuitive infotainment systems, smart device integration, over-the-air updates, and personalized user profiles. The goal is to make the car an extension of the user’s digital world.
  • Lifestyle Partnerships and Experiences: Lepas is likely forging partnerships with brands and service providers in various lifestyle sectors, such as fashion, travel, wellness, and technology. These collaborations could lead to exclusive offers, curated events, and integrated services that enhance the ownership experience. For instance, a Lepas owner might receive preferential access to luxury resorts or exclusive fashion brand discounts.
  • Customer Service and Community Building: The "Elegant Lifestyle House" concept may also extend to customer service, offering personalized support, premium after-sales services, and opportunities for owners to connect with each other through exclusive events or online communities. This fosters brand loyalty and creates a sense of belonging among Lepas owners.

The success of this approach hinges on Lepas’s ability to translate these conceptual elements into concrete product features and customer interactions. Early indicators suggest a strong emphasis on user-centric design and a commitment to creating a holistic ownership experience that goes beyond the transaction of purchasing a vehicle.

Technological Foundation: The L8’s Underpinnings

While specific details regarding the L8’s technological platform are proprietary, industry trends and previous reports suggest a focus on efficient powertrain technology and intelligent vehicle management systems. The PHEV architecture of the L8 allows for electric-only driving for shorter commutes, reducing local emissions and fuel consumption, while the internal combustion engine provides extended range for longer journeys. This dual-mode capability is particularly attractive in markets like Indonesia where charging infrastructure is still developing.

Furthermore, the integration of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) is almost a given for any new NEV aiming for a premium positioning. These systems, ranging from adaptive cruise control to automatic emergency braking, enhance safety and driving comfort, aligning with the "elegant lifestyle" narrative. The platform is also likely designed to be scalable, allowing for future integration of more advanced autonomous driving features as technology matures and regulations evolve.

Analyzing the Market Implications

Bidik Pasar Otomotif Indonesia, Lepas Beberkan Strategi Global

Lepas’s strategic emphasis on lifestyle integration and its aggressive global expansion signals a clear intent to capture a significant share of the premium NEV market. By moving beyond traditional automotive metrics, the brand aims to cultivate an emotional connection with consumers, positioning its vehicles as aspirational assets that reflect personal success and discerning taste.

This strategy could prove particularly effective in emerging markets where a growing affluent population is seeking products that signify status and sophistication. In Indonesia, where car ownership is often seen as a major life achievement, Lepas’s approach could resonate strongly with upwardly mobile consumers.

However, the brand will face considerable competition from established luxury automotive brands that are also rapidly electrifying their lineups and developing their own lifestyle-focused offerings. Furthermore, the success of Lepas’s strategy will depend on its ability to consistently deliver on the promise of a premium experience, from product quality and technological innovation to customer service and brand engagement. The long-term viability of the "Elegant Lifestyle House" concept will be a key determinant of Lepas’s success in the highly competitive global NEV landscape.

The brand’s commitment to a structured global network, as evidenced by the Partner Conference, suggests a long-term vision for sustainable growth. By investing in strong partnerships and fostering a unified brand identity across diverse markets, Lepas is laying the groundwork for enduring success in the evolving world of new energy vehicles. The journey ahead will undoubtedly be challenging, but Lepas’s strategic clarity and focus on integrating mobility with lifestyle appear to be a well-calculated move to carve out a distinct and influential niche in the automotive industry.

Pilgrims to the Holy Land Can Explore Madinah’s Rich Historical Sites Post-Hajj

by Neng Nana
written by Neng Nana

The conclusion of the Hajj pilgrimage presents a unique opportunity for devout Muslims to extend their spiritual journey by exploring the historically significant sites scattered throughout Madinah, Saudi Arabia. While the core rituals of Hajj are centered in Makkah and its surrounding sacred areas, a visit to Madinah is a common and cherished practice for nearly all pilgrims, often involving veneration at its principal mosques and engagement with its profound Islamic heritage. As the first wave of Hajj pilgrims is slated to depart on April 21, 2026, for a 40-day observance, the period following the spiritual climax of Hajj offers a window for deeper exploration.

Historically, Madinah, also known as the "City of the Prophet," served as the first capital of the Islamic caliphate and the final resting place of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Its significance transcends mere pilgrimage; it is a living testament to the early days of Islam, offering tangible connections to pivotal events and figures that shaped the faith. While the Saudi government has, since 2019, discouraged the framing of these visits as "religious tourism" in the context of Umrah and Hajj, allowing exploration of historical destinations post-pilgrimage remains a permitted and encouraged practice for those with available time and a desire for deeper engagement with Islamic history.

This article delves into some of the most compelling historical and culturally significant locations in Madinah that pilgrims can visit after fulfilling their Hajj obligations, offering a richer understanding of Islam’s formative years.

Jabal Uhud: Echoes of Faith and Sacrifice

One of the most prominent historical landmarks is Jabal Uhud, often referred to as Mount Uhud. This majestic mountain range, located to the north of Madinah, holds immense significance as the site of the pivotal Battle of Uhud, which occurred in 625 CE (3 AH). The battle was a critical test for the nascent Muslim community, demonstrating both the challenges faced and the unwavering faith of the companions of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

The foothills of Jabal Uhud are the final resting place for numerous martyrs, known as the ‘Shuhada Uhud,’ who bravely sacrificed their lives defending Islam during the battle. Visiting this site allows pilgrims to reflect on the courage and devotion of these early Muslims. The panoramic views from the mountain also offer a serene backdrop for contemplation and prayer. In Islamic tradition, Jabal Uhud is also recognized as a mountain that will be present in Paradise, adding another layer of spiritual reverence to its status. The strategic importance of the terrain during the battle, coupled with the profound sacrifices made, makes Jabal Uhud a deeply moving destination for pilgrims seeking to connect with the historical struggles and triumphs of early Islam.

Al-Hejaz Railway Museum: A Journey Through Time

For those interested in the intersection of history, engineering, and culture, the Al-Hejaz Railway Museum stands out as a UNESCO World Heritage site and a remarkable repository of Madinah’s past. This museum acts as a temporal gateway, meticulously preserving the history and development of Madinah through its vast collection of over 2,000 artifacts.

The museum’s origins lie in an ambitious historical project: the construction of a railway line connecting Madinah to Istanbul, the capital of the Ottoman Empire. Initiated by Sultan Abdul Hamid II, this ambitious endeavor aimed to facilitate pilgrimage and strengthen imperial ties. Although the project was eventually abandoned, its legacy is now preserved within the museum, showcasing the engineering prowess and historical context of the era. The Al-Hejaz Railway Museum, situated in Al Suqya, Madinah, offers an unparalleled glimpse into the region’s industrial heritage and its evolving role within the broader Ottoman sphere of influence. Visitors can explore remnants of the railway, understand the logistical challenges of its construction, and appreciate the cultural exchange that such projects fostered. The presence of this museum underscores Madinah’s historical importance not only as a spiritual center but also as a hub of historical infrastructure development.

The Prophet’s Mosque (Al-Masjid An-Nabawi): The Heart of Madinah

No visit to Madinah is complete without spending significant time at Al-Masjid An-Nabawi, the Prophet’s Mosque. Founded by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) himself shortly after his migration to Madinah, it is one of the three holiest mosques in Islam, after the Masjid al-Haram in Makkah and Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. The mosque has undergone numerous expansions and renovations throughout Islamic history, reflecting its enduring significance and the continuous reverence it commands.

Within the precincts of the Prophet’s Mosque lies Rawdah Sharif, the area between the Prophet’s tomb and his minbar (pulpit). This sacred space is believed to be a garden from the gardens of Paradise, and prayers offered here are considered exceptionally blessed. The Prophet’s Mosque is not merely a place of worship; it is a vibrant center of Islamic learning and community life, having served as a focal point for disseminating knowledge and fostering unity since its inception. The architecture itself tells a story, with elements from different historical periods coexisting, each layer adding to the mosque’s rich narrative. For pilgrims, spending time in prayer, reflection, and supplication at Al-Masjid An-Nabawi is an integral part of their spiritual journey, offering a profound connection to the life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Tempat-Tempat Bersejarah dalam Islam yang Bisa Dikunjungi di Madinah

Quba Mosque: The First Mosque of Islam

Another site of immense historical and spiritual importance is the Quba Mosque, located on the outskirts of Madinah. This mosque holds the distinction of being the very first mosque built in the history of Islam. According to historical accounts, it was constructed by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his companions upon their arrival in Madinah during the Hijrah (migration).

The Quran mentions the Quba Mosque in Surah At-Tawbah (9:108), highlighting its spiritual merit and the virtues of those who pray there. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) himself is reported to have visited and prayed at Quba Mosque regularly, often on Saturdays, encouraging his followers to do the same. The mosque has been rebuilt and expanded over centuries, preserving its original sanctity while accommodating the growing number of worshippers. Visiting Quba Mosque offers pilgrims a tangible link to the foundational moments of Islam and an opportunity to participate in a tradition that has continued for over 14 centuries. The act of praying at Quba is considered highly rewarding, reinforcing the spiritual essence of the pilgrimage.

The Seven Mosques (Al-Sab’u Masajid): A Cluster of Sacred Sites

The area known as the Seven Mosques, or Al-Sab’u Masajid, comprises a cluster of historical mosques located near the base of Jabal Uhud. These mosques are believed to have been built to commemorate the sites where prominent companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) performed prayers during the Battle of the Trench (Ghazwat al-Khandaq) in 627 CE (5 AH). While historically there were more, the commonly visited sites today are usually six, though the name "Seven Mosques" persists.

These mosques, though modest in size, are imbued with historical significance, representing the strategic positions held by the Muslim forces during a crucial defensive battle. Each mosque is associated with a particular companion, such as Salman Al-Farsi, Ali ibn Abi Talib, and Sa’d ibn Mu’adh. Exploring these sites provides insight into the tactical planning and spiritual fortitude displayed by the early Muslims during a time of great peril. The proximity of these mosques allows pilgrims to trace the historical narrative of the Battle of the Trench and reflect on the faith and determination of those who defended Madinah.

Jannatul Baqi: The Sacred Graveyard

Adjacent to the Prophet’s Mosque lies Jannatul Baqi, the principal graveyard of Madinah. This sacred cemetery is the final resting place for many of Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) family members, including his daughters Fatimah and Ruqayyah, his grandsons Hassan and Hussein, and his wives (the Mothers of the Believers). It also contains the graves of numerous companions and early Islamic figures.

Visiting Jannatul Baqi offers a solemn opportunity for pilgrims to pay their respects to the Ahl al-Bayt (the Prophet’s household) and the revered figures of early Islam. It is a place for quiet contemplation, remembrance, and supplication for the departed. The presence of these esteemed individuals in this burial ground underscores Madinah’s central role in Islamic history and its profound spiritual connection to the Prophet’s lineage and his closest associates. While access to the specific graves is restricted, the general area is accessible for respectful visitation and reflection.

Historical Context and Broader Implications

The Hajj pilgrimage, a cornerstone of Islam, draws millions of Muslims from across the globe to Saudi Arabia annually. The 2026 Hajj season, with its planned departure dates in late April, signifies a continuation of this profound spiritual tradition. While the focus remains on the spiritual obligations in Makkah, the extended stay in Madinah offers a valuable opportunity for pilgrims to deepen their understanding of Islam’s historical roots.

The Saudi government’s emphasis on preserving and showcasing these historical sites aligns with its broader Vision 2030 goals, which aim to diversify the Saudi economy and promote tourism, including religious and cultural tourism. By highlighting these historical locations, Saudi Arabia seeks to enrich the visitor experience beyond the spiritual aspects of pilgrimage, offering a more comprehensive cultural and historical engagement with the Kingdom.

The allowance for post-Hajj exploration of historical sites in Madinah can be seen as an effort to manage the flow of pilgrims, encouraging them to utilize their time constructively after fulfilling their primary religious duties. This approach not only benefits the pilgrims by offering a more holistic experience but also contributes to the local economy and promotes a greater appreciation for Islamic heritage among a global audience.

The historical narratives embedded within these sites—from the sacrifices at Uhud to the foundational construction of Quba Mosque—provide tangible connections to the early struggles, triumphs, and enduring values of Islam. Pengadilan Tinggi Israel Dengarkan Petisi yang Tuntut Pemecatan Menteri Sayap Kanan Ben-Gvir

by Neng Nana
written by Neng Nana

The High Court of Justice in Israel officially commenced proceedings on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, to hear a series of high-stakes petitions demanding the removal of National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir from his cabinet position. The petitions, filed by a coalition of civil rights organizations and former high-ranking security officials, allege that the far-right minister has systematically and illegally intervened in the operational decisions of the Israel Police, thereby compromising the independence of the law enforcement agency and violating the terms of his appointment. The hearing marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing tension between the executive and judicial branches of the Israeli government, raising the specter of a full-scale constitutional crisis should the court rule against the sitting minister.

Due to heightened security concerns and the potential for significant disruption within the courtroom, the panel of judges presided over the hearing without a public gallery. However, in a move toward transparency, the court authorized a live broadcast of the proceedings, allowing the Israeli public and international observers to follow the arguments in real-time. The atmosphere outside the courthouse in Jerusalem was electric, as hundreds of demonstrators from across the political spectrum gathered to voice their stances on the controversial minister’s future.

Protests and Public Defiance

Hours before the session began, supporters of Itamar Ben-Gvir, the leader of the Otzma Yehudit (Jewish Power) party, converged outside the Supreme Court building. Many carried placards that read, "It is time to tell the High Court: Enough" and "End the judicial dictatorship." These supporters view the legal challenges against Ben-Gvir not as a matter of administrative law, but as an attempt by an unelected judiciary to subvert the will of the voters who brought the current right-wing coalition to power.

Ben-Gvir himself arrived at the scene to address the crowd before entering the chamber. In a characteristically defiant speech, he directly addressed the allegations leveled by Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara, who has previously criticized his conduct. "Gali Baharav-Miara says that I determine policy and that I am changing the police—she is absolutely right," Ben-Gvir told his supporters. "More than half a million voters chose us to bring about real change, to restore governance, and to ensure that the police serve the interests of the citizens, not a narrow political elite."

The minister concluded his remarks with a stern warning to the judiciary: "Do not drag Israel into a constitutional crisis, division, or further polarization. Democracy will not collapse if a minister exercises his mandate. It is the legal dictatorship that will collapse."

The Legal Core: Allegations of Ministerial Overreach

The petitions currently before the High Court center on the "Police Ordinance," which defines the relationship between the Minister of National Security and the Police Commissioner. Historically, the minister has the authority to set broad policy—such as prioritizing certain types of crime or allocating budgets—but is strictly prohibited from interfering in specific operational decisions, such as who to arrest, how to manage specific protests, or which officers to promote.

The petitioners argue that since taking office in late 2022, Ben-Gvir has repeatedly crossed these "red lines." Specific instances cited in the court documents include:

  1. Operational Interference during Protests: Allegations that the minister issued direct orders to field commanders regarding the use of force and water cannons against anti-government protesters.
  2. Personnel Decisions: The controversial removal of Tel Aviv District Commander Ami Eshed and the alleged influence over the promotion of officers who align with the minister’s political ideology.
  3. Direct Communication: Reports that Ben-Gvir bypassed the Police Commissioner to give instructions directly to subordinate officers, a practice that critics argue destroys the chain of command.

The Attorney General’s office has largely supported the view that Ben-Gvir’s actions have been problematic. In prior legal opinions, Baharav-Miara stated that the minister’s conduct creates a "fear of the politicization of the police," which could undermine the public’s trust in the law enforcement’s neutrality.

A Chronology of Friction: 2022–2026

The path to the current High Court hearing has been paved with years of escalating friction between Ben-Gvir and the legal establishment.

  • December 2022: Itamar Ben-Gvir is appointed Minister of National Security as part of Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition government. As a condition of joining, he demands an amendment to the Police Ordinance to expand his powers.
  • Early 2023: The "Ben-Gvir Law" is passed in the Knesset, granting the minister broader authority over police policy. This immediately draws criticism from legal experts and former commissioners.
  • July 2023: Massive protests against the government’s judicial overhaul lead to clashes between Ben-Gvir and police leadership. The minister publicly berates commanders for being "too soft" on protesters.
  • 2024–2025: A series of petitions are filed by the Movement for Quality Government in Israel and other NGOs, seeking to limit Ben-Gvir’s involvement in police operations. The High Court issues several interim warnings, advising the minister to refrain from operational interference.
  • Early 2026: Following a series of high-profile resignations within the senior ranks of the Israel Police, the Attorney General signals that she may no longer be able to defend the minister’s conduct in court, leading to the current hearing on his potential dismissal.

Supporting Data: The State of the Israel Police

The legal battle takes place against a backdrop of significant internal turmoil within the Israel Police. According to data released by internal monitoring groups and reported in local media, the police force has faced a "manpower crisis" during Ben-Gvir’s tenure.

  • Resignation Rates: Since 2023, there has been a 15% increase in voluntary resignations among mid-level officers, with many citing "political pressure" and "eroding professional autonomy" as primary reasons for leaving.
  • Public Trust: Surveys conducted by the Israel Democracy Institute (IDI) indicate that public trust in the police has fluctuated significantly. While some sectors of the population support Ben-Gvir’s "tough on crime" rhetoric, a substantial portion of the public expresses concern that the police have become a tool for political interests.
  • Crime Statistics: While Ben-Gvir campaigned on a platform of "restoring security," violent crime rates in certain sectors, particularly in Arab-Israeli communities, remained at historic highs through 2024 and 2025, leading to accusations that the minister’s focus on political optics has detracted from effective policing.

Official Responses and the Threat of Non-Compliance

The government’s response to the court proceedings has been one of unprecedented defiance. Justice Minister Yariv Levin, a key architect of the government’s judicial reform agenda, issued a blistering statement on Wednesday morning. According to reports from The Times of Israel, Levin asserted that the government would not feel bound by a court ruling that orders the dismissal of a cabinet minister.

"The authority to appoint and remove ministers rests solely with the Prime Minister and the Knesset," Levin stated. "If the court takes it upon itself to fire a minister who enjoys the confidence of the government and the people, it is the court that is acting outside the law. We will not honor such a ruling."

This stance sets the stage for a potential "clash of the titans." If the High Court orders Ben-Gvir’s removal and Prime Minister Netanyahu refuses to implement the order, Israel would enter uncharted legal territory. In such a scenario, the police and the civil service would be forced to choose between following the directives of the government or the rulings of the judiciary.

Broader Implications and Expert Analysis

Legal analysts suggest that the High Court is currently navigating a "judicial minefield." On one hand, the court has a duty to uphold the rule of law and ensure that ministers do not abuse their power. On the other hand, removing a democratically elected official—especially one as popular with his base as Ben-Gvir—could be seen as a drastic intervention that might further delegitimize the court in the eyes of a large segment of the population.

"The court is being asked to decide on the very nature of Israeli democracy," says Dr. Ariel Lavi, a constitutional law expert. "Is the minister the absolute head of the police, or is the police an independent institution that serves the law rather than the politician? If the court rules against Ben-Gvir, it is effectively saying that there are limits to political power that even a parliamentary majority cannot override."

Furthermore, the international community is watching the proceedings closely. Israel’s allies, including the United States, have previously expressed concern over Ben-Gvir’s policies and their impact on regional stability and democratic norms. A decision that reinforces the independence of the police might be welcomed abroad, but the resulting internal chaos could weaken Israel’s domestic stability.

Conclusion

As the High Court continues its deliberations, the nation remains on edge. The outcome of this case will not only determine the political career of Itamar Ben-Gvir but will also define the boundaries of ministerial authority in Israel for decades to come. Whether the court chooses to issue a stern warning, impose stricter limitations on his powers, or take the unprecedented step of ordering his dismissal, the repercussions will be felt across every level of the Israeli government and society.

The hearing is expected to continue for several days, with a final ruling potentially taking weeks or even months to be drafted. In the meantime, the tension between the "sovereignty of the voter" and the "rule of law" remains the central fracture in the Israeli body politic, with the Israel Police caught directly in the crossfire.

Navigating the Digital Frontier: UGM Psychologist Urges Open Dialogue to Combat Gaming and Gadget Addiction in Children

by Neng Nana
written by Neng Nana

JAKARTA – The pervasive integration of digital devices and online gaming into the lives of children necessitates a proactive and communicative approach from parents to safeguard against potential addiction, according to Novi Poespita Candra, a psychologist from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM). In an interview conducted on Saturday, February 11, 2023, Candra emphasized the critical role of consistent and in-depth conversations between parents and their children regarding their digital activities.

"There needs to be an intensive dialogue with children," Candra stated, "asking them what they gain from playing games. Are there positive and negative influences they perceive on their bodies and their lives?" This sentiment underscores a growing concern among developmental psychologists and educators about the potential downsides of unchecked screen time, particularly as digital entertainment becomes increasingly sophisticated and accessible.

The ubiquity of smartphones and online games has transformed childhood experiences, making them an almost inseparable part of modern life for many youngsters. While these tools offer opportunities for learning, social connection, and entertainment, Candra highlighted the crucial need for establishing clear boundaries. These boundaries, she explained, should encompass not only the duration of use but also the careful selection of content and the types of games children engage with. The ultimate aim is to foster a balanced lifestyle, ensuring that digital engagement does not overshadow essential social interactions and physical activities. Furthermore, parents are encouraged to instill a sense of responsibility in their children regarding their daily routines and commitments, independent of their digital pursuits.

"These dialogues and agreements are what will create self-awareness and self-management in the appropriate use of gadgets," Candra elaborated, emphasizing that empowering children with understanding and shared decision-making is more effective than outright prohibition.

The Neurochemical Hook: Understanding the Brain’s Response to Gaming

Candra delved into the physiological mechanisms underlying the allure of gaming, explaining that engaging with digital games can trigger the release of potent "happiness hormones" in the brain. These include dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, and endorphins. Broadly speaking, these neurochemicals are associated with feelings of pleasure, reward, and well-being, often experienced after engaging in rewarding activities. In the context of gaming, the immediate feedback loops, sense of accomplishment, and social interaction (in multiplayer games) can create a powerful positive reinforcement cycle.

This surge of pleasurable neurochemicals can naturally lead individuals, especially children whose brains are still developing, to seek out these experiences repeatedly. Candra warned that prolonged and excessive engagement with gaming can significantly increase the risk of developing addiction. The World Health Organization (WHO) officially recognized "gaming disorder" as a condition in its International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11), defining it by a pattern of persistent or recurrent gaming behavior characterized by impaired control over gaming, increasing priority given to gaming over other activities, and continuation or escalation of gaming despite negative consequences. This official recognition by a global health body highlights the seriousness of the issue and the need for evidence-based interventions.

The Far-Reaching Consequences of Gaming Addiction

The potential ramifications of gaming addiction, if not recognized or addressed promptly, are substantial and can profoundly impact a child’s overall development and well-being. Candra outlined several key areas of concern:

  • Mental Health Deterioration: Untreated gaming addiction can lead to a range of mental health issues. This can manifest as a significant reduction in social skills and an aversion to real-world social interactions, as virtual environments become a preferred, albeit less challenging, substitute. Children may experience increased levels of stress and anxiety, often stemming from the pressure to perform in games or the fear of missing out on in-game events. Chronic fatigue can set in due to disrupted sleep patterns and the sheer expenditure of mental energy on gaming. Apathy towards other aspects of life, including schoolwork, hobbies, and family relationships, is also a common symptom, indicating a loss of interest in anything outside the gaming realm. Consequently, overall motivation to engage in other activities can plummet.

  • Physical Health Impairments: The sedentary nature of prolonged gaming directly impacts a child’s physical health, especially during critical growth periods. Reduced physical activity can lead to a higher risk of obesity, poor cardiovascular health, and underdeveloped motor skills. Staring at screens for extended periods can cause eye strain, dry eyes, and potentially contribute to long-term vision problems. Furthermore, the repetitive hand and wrist movements associated with gaming, combined with poor posture, can result in musculoskeletal complaints, such as joint pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, and neck and back discomfort.

Cultivating Healthy Digital Habits: Strategies for Parents and Guardians

The challenge for parents lies not in eliminating digital engagement entirely, but in guiding children towards a healthy and balanced relationship with technology. Candra reiterated that the neurochemical rewards associated with gaming are not exclusive to digital platforms.

"Happiness hormones can be stimulated by other activities," she noted. "The most important thing is to build self-awareness and self-management." This suggests that parents can help children find alternative sources of pleasure and satisfaction that contribute to their overall well-being. This could involve encouraging participation in sports, creative arts, reading, outdoor exploration, or meaningful family activities.

Supporting Data and Expert Perspectives

Research consistently supports the concerns raised by Candra. A 2021 study published in the Journal of Adolescent Health found a significant correlation between excessive gaming time and increased symptoms of depression and anxiety among adolescents. Another report by the Pew Research Center in 2022 indicated that a substantial percentage of teenagers acknowledge struggling with controlling their screen time, with gaming being a primary culprit for many.

Dr. Anya Sharma, a child psychologist specializing in behavioral addictions who was not directly involved in the UGM statement but whose work often addresses similar issues, commented on the broader implications. "The key is early intervention and consistent modeling," Dr. Sharma stated in a recent webinar. "Children learn by observing. If parents are constantly on their phones, it sends a powerful, albeit unintended, message about what is considered important. Open communication, setting clear expectations, and actively participating in or showing interest in their child’s digital world, not just their offline activities, can make a significant difference."

The Role of Technology Companies and Educational Institutions

While the primary responsibility for guiding children’s digital habits rests with parents, there is a growing call for greater accountability from technology companies and educational institutions. Game developers could incorporate more features that promote healthy play, such as built-in time limits or reminders to take breaks. Educational institutions are increasingly incorporating digital literacy programs that teach students about responsible technology use, critical evaluation of online content, and the potential risks associated with excessive screen time.

The Indonesian Pediatric Association (IDAI) has also issued guidelines recommending that children aged 2-5 years have no more than 1 hour of screen time per day, while older children should have their screen time limited to 2 hours per day, with specific recommendations for content and context. These guidelines, while not always strictly adhered to, serve as a crucial benchmark for parents and healthcare professionals.

A Timeline of Growing Concern

The rise of smartphones and the subsequent proliferation of mobile gaming have been a relatively recent phenomenon, with significant acceleration in the last decade.

  • Early 2000s: The advent of widespread internet access and early mobile gaming (e.g., Snake on Nokia phones) marked the initial stage.
  • Late 2000s – Early 2010s: The launch of smartphones like the iPhone and Android devices revolutionized mobile gaming, introducing sophisticated graphics and a vast array of downloadable games. This period saw the beginnings of concerns about excessive play.
  • Mid-2010s: The explosion of free-to-play games with in-app purchases and the rise of esports further intensified engagement. Reports of children exhibiting addictive behaviors began to surface more frequently in media and academic discussions.
  • Late 2010s – Present: Organizations like the WHO formally recognized gaming disorder, and educational and health institutions worldwide began developing more concrete strategies and guidelines to address the issue. The COVID-19 pandemic, with its surge in online learning and entertainment, further complicated the landscape, leading to increased screen time for many children and a potential exacerbation of gaming-related issues.

The current dialogue, as highlighted by Novi Poespita Candra’s recommendations, represents a crucial step in the ongoing effort to equip parents with the tools and understanding needed to navigate this evolving digital landscape. The focus on open communication, self-awareness, and balanced engagement offers a constructive path forward, aiming to ensure that technology serves as a tool for enrichment rather than a source of detriment for the younger generation. The long-term implications of successfully managing this challenge will undoubtedly shape the cognitive, social, and physical development of future generations.
