ShopeePay Strengthens Digital Payment Ecosystem Through QRIS Integration to Empower Indonesian SMEs and Consumers

by Nila Kartika Wati
written by Nila Kartika Wati

The landscape of financial transactions in Indonesia has undergone a seismic shift toward digitalization, primarily driven by the ubiquitous adoption of the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS). As Bank Indonesia (BI) continues to spearhead the national drive toward a cashless society, major digital wallet providers like ShopeePay have emerged as critical intermediaries. By integrating seamless payment solutions into a single, user-friendly application, ShopeePay is not only facilitating everyday consumer convenience but is also serving as a vital bridge for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to transition into the formal digital economy. This transformation was underscored during the recent industry forum titled "Cara Baru Manfaatkan QRIS: Pengguna & Pengusaha UMKM Pasti Untung," held in Jakarta on September 16, where stakeholders highlighted the strategic importance of standardized digital payments in achieving national financial inclusion goals.

The Evolution of QRIS in the Indonesian Financial Landscape

The introduction of QRIS by Bank Indonesia in August 2019 was a milestone aimed at consolidating the fragmented digital payment ecosystem. Prior to its inception, the market was saturated with proprietary QR codes from various e-wallets, forcing merchants to display multiple QR stands and complicating reconciliation for business owners. The standardization provided by QRIS allowed for interoperability, where any QRIS-enabled app could process payments regardless of the merchant’s payment service provider.

Over the past five years, the adoption curve has been steep. From local wet markets and street-side vendors to major retail chains, QRIS has become the standard language of commerce. The systemic push by the central bank has focused on four pillars: efficiency, security, inclusivity, and integration. By lowering the barriers to entry for small businesses, the policy has effectively democratized access to financial services, allowing even the smallest businesses to maintain a digital ledger of transactions, which is a prerequisite for future credit access and financial health.

Insights from the September 16 Forum

The "Cara Baru Manfaatkan QRIS" event served as a platform for policy makers and industry players to reflect on the progress of digital penetration. Fitria Irmi Triswati, Executive Director of the Payment System Policy Department at Bank Indonesia, emphasized that the current growth of QRIS is not merely a trend but a foundational shift in how the Indonesian economy operates.

"The development of QRIS is a central component of Bank Indonesia’s strategy to build a digital payment ecosystem that is inclusive, efficient, secure, and fully integrated," Triswati stated during the event. She highlighted the staggering statistic that 96.69% of the 45.46 million QRIS-registered merchants are categorized as MSMEs. This data point is critical; it demonstrates that the digitalization effort has successfully penetrated the grassroots level of the economy, providing small-scale entrepreneurs with the same technological advantages previously reserved for large corporations.

The Role of ShopeePay in Facilitating Digital Adoption

ShopeePay has strategically positioned itself as a primary enabler of this transition. By embedding QRIS technology within its core mobile application, ShopeePay offers more than just a payment gateway; it offers a comprehensive financial toolset. For the average Indonesian consumer, the convenience of using a single app to pay for transport, groceries, utility bills, and e-commerce purchases creates a "stickiness" that drives consistent usage.

For the MSME sector, ShopeePay provides more than just the ability to accept payments. It offers a dashboard for sales monitoring, simplified fund settlement, and integration with the wider Shopee ecosystem, which includes logistics support and access to a massive customer base. By leveraging the familiarity of the Shopee platform, small business owners are finding it easier to transition from cash-only operations to digital, transparent systems. This shift is essential for "financial formalization," where businesses build a transaction history that can eventually be used by banks and fintech lenders to assess creditworthiness.

ShopeePay Bersama Bank Indonesia Dorong Manfaat Penggunaan QRIS bagi Pengguna dan Pengusaha UMKM

Supporting Data and Market Trends

The acceleration of QRIS adoption is supported by robust data from the central bank and independent financial analysts. As of the third quarter of 2024, the volume of QRIS transactions in Indonesia has seen double-digit growth year-on-year. Several factors contribute to this:

  1. Merchant Penetration: The expansion into rural areas and traditional markets (pasar tradisional) has been a key driver.
  2. Consumer Behavior: The post-pandemic shift toward touchless payments has become permanent, with consumers prioritizing safety and efficiency.
  3. Regulatory Support: Bank Indonesia’s policies, including the introduction of QRIS Tuntas (transfer, tarik tunai, setor tunai), have added functionality beyond simple payments, allowing for basic banking services at the point of sale.

The reliance on MSMEs as the backbone of this ecosystem is not accidental. In Indonesia, MSMEs contribute over 60% of the national GDP. Therefore, by digitizing this sector, the government is essentially digitizing the core of the Indonesian economy, which leads to better tax compliance, improved economic data tracking, and higher overall economic productivity.

Challenges and Future Implications

Despite the rapid success, the ecosystem faces ongoing challenges. Cybersecurity remains a primary concern as the frequency of digital transactions increases. Both Bank Indonesia and payment service providers like ShopeePay are under continuous pressure to enhance fraud detection mechanisms and educate the public on secure digital habits.

Furthermore, there is the "digital divide" issue. While urban centers have high adoption rates, infrastructure limitations in remote regions remain a hurdle. Providing reliable internet connectivity is essential for the continued expansion of the QRIS network. Analysts suggest that the next phase of development will likely involve "embedded finance," where payment data is used to provide instant micro-loans or insurance products tailored specifically to the needs of the merchant or consumer.

The implications for the broader economy are significant. A fully digitalized payment system reduces the cost of printing and distributing physical currency, minimizes the risk of counterfeit money, and provides the government with real-time economic data that can inform more precise fiscal and monetary policies. For the merchant, it eliminates the "cash-handling" risk—the theft or loss of physical money—and provides a professionalized audit trail that can be used for business expansion.

Conclusion: A Collaborative Future

The synergy between regulatory bodies like Bank Indonesia and private entities like ShopeePay represents a model for public-private partnership in the digital age. By focusing on accessibility and utility, these stakeholders have transformed the way daily commerce is conducted in Indonesia. The goal, as voiced at the Jakarta forum, is to ensure that no segment of society is left behind.

As the ecosystem matures, the focus will likely shift from simple volume growth to quality of service and the integration of value-added financial services. For the Indonesian consumer, the "Cara Baru" or "New Way" of transacting is no longer an alternative—it has become the primary method for engaging with the economy. As QRIS continues to integrate into the daily lives of millions, the foundation for a modern, digital-first Indonesian economy is being firmly laid, promising a future of greater financial inclusion and economic resilience. The success of this initiative will be measured not just by the number of QR codes displayed at shop counters, but by the tangible improvements in the daily lives of the millions of entrepreneurs and consumers who now participate in a safer, faster, and more efficient digital marketplace.

Jakarta Police Intensify Crackdown on Narcotics and Illegal Pharmaceuticals During Operasi Nila Jaya 2026

by Evan Lee Salim
written by Evan Lee Salim

The Metropolitan Police across Jakarta have launched a series of high-profile operations resulting in the arrest of multiple suspects involved in the distribution of narcotics and illicit pharmaceutical drugs. This coordinated enforcement effort, primarily conducted under the banner of Operasi Nila Jaya, reflects an aggressive strategy by law enforcement to dismantle distribution networks operating within the capital. From September 9 to September 17, 2026, authorities across the five administrative cities of Jakarta successfully seized thousands of illegal pills and significant quantities of methamphetamine, signaling a persistent challenge in controlling the city’s underground drug trade.

The Scope of Operasi Nila Jaya 2026

Operasi Nila Jaya is an annual strategic initiative implemented by the Indonesian National Police to curb drug trafficking, abuse, and the proliferation of illegal substances. In 2026, the operation has taken on increased urgency following reports of rising clandestine transactions, particularly those disguised within legitimate retail environments. The recent wave of arrests highlights a multifaceted approach: targeting street-level dealers, dismantling organized supply chains linked to correctional facilities, and shuttering storefronts acting as fronts for illicit pharmaceutical sales.

The sheer scale of the seizures—ranging from methamphetamine handled by domestic syndicates to over 70,000 units of restricted drugs confiscated in a single sweep in Tanah Abang—illustrates that the illicit drug market in Jakarta remains deeply entrenched. Law enforcement agencies are currently working to determine if these disparate arrests are connected to larger, centralized criminal syndicates or if they represent a fragmented landscape of independent operators taking advantage of urban density.

Coordinated Enforcement: A Breakdown of Recent Operations

The tactical maneuvers conducted by various precinct offices demonstrate the localized nature of these criminal networks.

West Jakarta: Targeting the Domestic Supply Chain

The Jakarta Barat (West Jakarta) Metropolitan Police Narcotics Unit successfully apprehended a husband-and-wife duo, identified by their initials YM and PI, in the Cakung area of East Jakarta. The operation was initiated following community intelligence reports indicating that the couple was leveraging their domestic environment to facilitate the distribution of methamphetamine. According to AKBP Vernal A. Sambo, the arrest was the culmination of surveillance efforts aimed at identifying key nodes in the local supply chain. The arrest of a couple suggests a familial model of drug distribution, which is often used by syndicates to avoid suspicion and blend into residential neighborhoods.

Mampang Prapatan: Unmasking Prison-Controlled Networks

In a separate incident, the Mampang Prapatan Sector Police arrested an individual who served as both a user and a dealer. The case is particularly concerning to authorities as it involves evidence of remote coordination from within a correctional facility. AKP Purwaditya, the Head of Criminal Investigation for the sector, confirmed that the suspect had been receiving instructions from an incarcerated individual regarding where to pick up and distribute the narcotics. This revelation highlights the ongoing struggle to isolate high-security prisoners from external communication, a recurring issue that law enforcement agencies continue to grapple with nationwide.

North Jakarta: Combating Illegal Pharmaceutical Distribution

The North Jakarta Metropolitan Police focused their efforts on the retail sector during Operasi Nila Jaya. Between September 9 and 17, they confiscated 4,212 pills of illegal Class G pharmaceuticals from four suspects: MN, AZ, EF, and US. The suspects were operating out of cosmetic shops located in the districts of Koja, Cilincing, and Tanjung Priok. By using legitimate-looking storefronts as covers for the sale of regulated substances, the suspects sought to bypass standard pharmacy regulations and health safety inspections.

Central Jakarta: Large-Scale Seizures at Tanah Abang

The most significant volume of illegal pharmaceuticals was seized by the Central Jakarta Metropolitan Police. Acting on tips regarding illegal transactions near the Blok G area of the Tanah Abang market, police apprehended four suspects and secured 74,997 units of restricted drugs. Kombes Pol. Dr. Reynold E.P. Hutagalung emphasized that the density of the Tanah Abang market makes it a primary target for illicit drug traders looking for a high volume of foot traffic. This specific bust is seen as a major blow to the distribution of "daftar G" (restricted) drugs, which are frequently abused by laborers and youth populations due to their low cost and accessibility.

Analysis of the Narcotics Landscape in Jakarta

The data gathered during this week of operations provides a snapshot of the challenges facing urban policing in Indonesia. The shift toward distributing "daftar G" drugs—which are pharmaceuticals intended for legitimate medical use but often misused for their sedative or stimulant effects—represents a growing public health crisis. Unlike synthetic narcotics like methamphetamine, which are entirely prohibited, restricted pharmaceuticals are often stolen from supply chains or sold without a prescription, making them harder to track through traditional drug-enforcement protocols.

Furthermore, the involvement of individuals residing in correctional facilities in directing street-level sales points to a systemic vulnerability in the Indonesian prison system. Despite the implementation of signal jammers and restricted visitation policies, the ability of incarcerated inmates to command external criminal activity remains a critical failure point that law enforcement officials are actively seeking to address through increased inter-agency cooperation.

Socio-Economic Implications and Public Safety

The economic disparity in Jakarta often drives individuals toward the "shadow economy" of drug distribution. For the suspects involved in the North Jakarta and Central Jakarta cases, the conversion of cosmetic shops into drug fronts suggests that economic desperation, combined with a lack of oversight in the retail sector, creates a conducive environment for illicit activities.

From a public health perspective, the widespread availability of these substances in areas like Tanah Abang, a hub for thousands of daily commuters and workers, poses a significant threat to social stability. The consumption of these pills can lead to erratic behavior, long-term health degradation, and increased rates of petty crime. By removing over 79,000 illicit items from the market in under ten days, the police have effectively disrupted a significant portion of the capital’s drug supply, though officials concede that the root causes—demand and supply chain accessibility—require more than just tactical arrests.

Future Outlook and Strategic Development

The Jakarta Metropolitan Police have confirmed that Operasi Nila Jaya 2026 will continue to evolve. Future strategies are expected to include:

  1. Enhanced Surveillance of Retail Outlets: Closer monitoring of cosmetic and health supplement shops, particularly in high-traffic commercial zones.
  2. Digital Forensic Investigation: Strengthening efforts to track communications between incarcerated individuals and external dealers, potentially involving cooperation with the Ministry of Law and Human Rights.
  3. Community-Based Prevention: Encouraging residents to continue providing tips to local police, as the majority of these arrests were successful due to public tip-offs.

The objective is to create a hostile environment for drug traffickers by increasing the risk of capture and the likelihood of prosecution. As these cases move through the legal system, the authorities hope that the sentences handed down will serve as a deterrent to other potential distributors. However, the recurring nature of these crimes—particularly the prison-controlled distribution model—suggests that until the supply chain is severed at the source, the police will remain in a state of perpetual enforcement.

In conclusion, the events of September 17, 2026, serve as a stark reminder of the complexity of the drug trade in Jakarta. While the arrests of these individuals and the seizure of thousands of illicit units represent a tangible victory for the police, the structural challenges of the illicit drug market require ongoing vigilance, inter-agency collaboration, and a more robust approach to pharmaceutical regulation to ensure the long-term safety and health of the capital’s population. The commitment shown by the various precinct offices underscores the broader mandate of the Indonesian National Police to safeguard the city against the pervasive influence of narcotics and the misuse of controlled substances.

Indonesia Prepares 20 Elite Vocational Talents to Compete on the Global Stage at the 48th WorldSkills Competition in Shanghai

by Suro Senen
written by Suro Senen

The global arena of technical and vocational excellence is set to welcome a delegation of twenty highly skilled Indonesian youths as they prepare to test their mettle against peers from more than eighty countries. These competitors will travel to Shanghai, People’s Republic of China, to participate in the prestigious 48th WorldSkills Competition (WSC). Recognized globally as the "Olympics of Skills," this event serves as the pinnacle for vocational education and training systems worldwide, drawing thousands of brilliant young minds to showcase mastery across a diverse spectrum of industrial, technological, and service trades.

For Indonesia, this year’s participation marks a crucial milestone in the nation’s ongoing campaign to elevate the competitiveness of its workforce to meet stringent international benchmarks. The contingent comprises twenty dedicated competitors accompanied by seventeen industry-certified experts. Together, they will compete across seventeen distinct fields of expertise, representing a balanced cross-section of advanced technical disciplines, digital media, manufacturing technology, and service sectors.

Comprehensive Preparation Rooted in Global Standards

The journey to the international stage involves much more than simply selecting top-performing individuals. According to senior government officials overseeing the delegation, the training regimen implemented for the Indonesian team has been exceptionally rigorous. Tatang Muttaqin, Director General of Secondary Education and Special Education, emphasized that the participants underwent comprehensive conditioning that extended far beyond technical proficiency.

The preparation camps focused heavily on psychological resilience, mental toughness, workplace discipline, uncompromised integrity, and the ability to operate efficiently under extreme pressure using strict global operational standards. Competitors were selected through a rigorous national selection process, drawing exceptional talent from senior vocational high schools (SMK), vocational graduates, and specialized talent pools developed in collaboration with industrial partners.

"They are departing not merely carrying luggage, but carrying the great name of Indonesia. They have been forged technically, mentally, and with high discipline according to world standards," Tatang stated. He further stressed that while securing medals remains an encouraging acknowledgment of their capabilities, the core objective transcends winning accolades. The primary mission is to benchmark national vocational standards against the world’s best, absorb cutting-edge technological advancements, and bring back invaluable operational insights to transform the domestic educational landscape.

Understanding the WorldSkills Phenomenon and Historical Context

The WorldSkills Competition is organized biennially by WorldSkills International, a global movement that has existed for more than seventy years to raise the profile and recognition of skilled people, and show how vital skills are in achieving economic growth and personal success. Originating in Spain in the 1950s, the organization has grown to include over eighty member countries and regions, impacting millions of young people by providing them with a platform to validate their competencies.

For developing and emerging economies like Indonesia, participation in WSC acts as a vital diagnostic tool. It provides an unvarnished reflection of how well national training curricula align with the fast-evolving demands of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. As automation, artificial intelligence, advanced robotics, and sustainable manufacturing redefine global value chains, vocational education systems must adapt continuously. By participating in Shanghai, Indonesian educators and industry stakeholders will gain firsthand observation of emerging global skill sets, modern machinery handling, and advanced troubleshooting techniques that are rapidly becoming mandatory requirements in multinational supply chains.

Bridging the Gap Between Classrooms and Industrial Realities

A persistent challenge in many developing economies is the mismatch between the skills taught in traditional classrooms and the dynamic requirements of modern industries. The insights gained from the 48th WorldSkills Competition are expected to serve as a catalyst for a comprehensive internal evaluation of Indonesia’s vocational education ecosystem.

Education analysts and policymakers plan to dissect the performance of the Indonesian contingent upon their return. This critical review will span multiple dimensions of vocational training, including curriculum design, pedagogical methods, equipment adequacy, and the integration of digital technologies into daily learning modules.

Modern vocational education must transcend traditional theoretical frameworks. It requires immersive, practical environments where students cultivate problem-solving abilities, adaptability, and cross-cultural communication skills. By exposing trainers and institutional leaders to the exacting demands of a world-class competition, the Indonesian government aims to cascade these international benchmarks down to regional vocational schools (SMK) across the archipelago. This strategic approach ensures that the broader student population—not just the elite twenty competitors—ultimately benefits from the knowledge transfer facilitated by the event.

The Strategic Importance of Industry Partnerships

A notable feature of Indonesia’s delegation for the Shanghai competition is the active involvement of industry partners. The inclusion of talent from corporate and manufacturing partner institutions underscores the reality that government-led education alone cannot adequately prepare students for contemporary market demands. Public-private partnerships are indispensable in ensuring that training workshops are equipped with industry-standard machinery and that mentors possess up-to-date commercial experience.

As global supply chains become increasingly complex and technologically integrated, companies demand technicians who require minimal onboarding time and can immediately contribute to high-precision manufacturing, software deployment, and infrastructure maintenance. The collaborative model utilized in preparing the Indonesian WSC contingent serves as a blueprint for future educational reforms, emphasizing that curriculum relevance is best maintained through continuous dialogue and resource-sharing between educational institutions and industrial enterprises.

Broader Economic Implications and National Vision

Indonesia is currently navigating a critical demographic window, characterized by a burgeoning productive-age population often referred to as the demographic dividend. To capitalize on this unique historical juncture and avoid the middle-income trap, the nation must transition from an economy reliant on raw commodity exports and low-cost labor to a knowledge-driven, innovation-led economy.

Skilled human capital is the foundational pillar of this national economic transformation. Initiatives such as the revitalization of vocational high schools and active participation in premier international platforms like the WorldSkills Competition are central to achieving the broader vision of a globally competitive workforce. When young Indonesian technicians demonstrate competence on par with counterparts from industrialized nations, it sends a powerful signal to foreign investors regarding the readiness and capability of the domestic labor market.

Furthermore, success in these arenas elevates the societal perception of vocational education. Historically, vocational tracks have sometimes been viewed as secondary options compared to academic pathways. By highlighting the achievements, prestige, and career viability of top-tier vocational experts, the government hopes to inspire a cultural shift, encouraging more youth to view technical and vocational education and training (TVET) as an attractive, high-status, and financially rewarding career path.

Looking Ahead to Shanghai

As the departure date approaches, the mood within the Indonesian training camps is a mixture of intense focus and national pride. The competitors have spent months mastering intricate blueprints, refining digital code, calibrating mechanical assemblies, and practicing time-management strategies designed to withstand the high-stress environment of international competition floors.

The 48th WorldSkills Competition in Shanghai will undoubtedly present formidable challenges, featuring the most brilliant young talents from economic powerhouses across Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Yet, regardless of the final medal tally, the expedition represents an invaluable investment in the nation’s future. The knowledge, networks, and rigorous standards that the twenty competitors and seventeen experts bring back to Indonesia will reverberate through classrooms, training centers, and corporate boardrooms for years to come, steadily anchoring the nation’s vocational capabilities firmly in the global premier league.

Aris Sanda ditemukan tewas mengenaskan bersama kendaraan yang hangus terbakar di Papua Pegunungan akibat dugaan aksi penembakan

by Sagoh
written by Sagoh

by Nana Muazin
written by Nana Muazin

Manchester City delivered a masterclass in attacking football to secure a resounding 5-0 victory over Norwich City in the third round of the 2026/2027 EFL Cup. Playing in front of their home supporters at the Etihad Stadium on Friday, September 18, 2026, the reigning English powerhouse demonstrated both depth and tactical supremacy under the guidance of manager Enzo Maresca. From the opening whistle to the final blow of the referee’s whistle, the hosts dominated possession, territory, and tempo, leaving the visitors from Carrow Road with few answers to an unrelenting wave of pressure.

The emphatic win not only cements Manchester City’s progression into the fourth round of the domestic cup competition but also serves as a strong statement of intent regarding their ambitions across all fronts this season. With a blend of seasoned veterans and rising academy prospects seamlessly integrated into the starting lineup, City showcased the enviable squad depth that has become the hallmark of their modern era. As the competition intensifies, this comprehensive performance will undoubtedly send a warning shot to remaining contenders in the tournament.

Main Facts of the Match

The fixture at the Etihad Stadium unfolded largely as pundits and supporters had anticipated, given the vast gulf in resources and current form between the Premier League giants and their Championship opponents. Manchester City controlled proceedings from the outset, registering an overwhelming share of possession and dictating the rhythm of the game. Norwich City attempted to set up a resilient defensive block, seeking to frustrate the hosts and exploit transition moments, but the sheer fluidity and technical superiority of Maresca’s side eventually dismantled their resistance.

Floyd Samba emerged as the standout performer of the night, netting a crucial brace that broke the game open and extinguished any hopes of a cup upset. His first-half header set the tone, while his second-half finish effectively put the match beyond reach. Rayan Cherki and Allan Elias also contributed significantly to the scoresheet with well-taken goals, before substitute Ryan McAidoo put the exclamation mark on the victory in the dying moments of regulation time.

Defensively, Manchester City was equally impenetrable. Goalkeeper Gerinio Rulli enjoyed a relatively quiet evening, shielded effectively by a backline featuring Rico Lewis, Nico O’Reilly, Abdukodir Khusanov, and Vitor Reis. Norwich struggled to carve out clear-cut opportunities, managing very few attempts on target as City’s midfield press, marshaled by Mateo Kovacic and Ayyoub Bouaddi, repeatedly shut down counter-attacks before they could develop into genuine threats.

Chronology and Match Progression

The first twenty-eight minutes of the encounter were characterized by patient probing from Manchester City, as Norwich City’s defensive organization held firm against persistent waves of attacks. However, the deadlock was finally broken in the 29th minute. Winger Allan Elias found space down the flank and delivered a precise, whipped cross into the penalty area. Floyd Samba rose majestically above his marker to direct a powerful header past goalkeeper Daniel Grimshaw, sending the home crowd into raptures and opening the scoring.

Energized by the breakthrough, City doubled their advantage just four minutes later in the 33rd minute. Rayan Cherki, displaying the intricate footwork and vision that has made him one of the most exciting young talents in Europe, danced his way toward the edge of the box before unleashing a low, driven shot that nestled neatly into the back of the net. The scoreline reflected City’s dominance as the two teams headed into the dressing rooms at halftime, with Norwich facing an insurmountable mountain to climb.

Any hopes of a miraculous second-half comeback from the visitors were swiftly extinguished shortly after the restart. In the 48th minute, Allan Elias rewarded his own impressive performance by getting on the scoresheet himself. Capitalizing on a swift transitional phase, Elias fired an accurate, low effort past Grimshaw to stretch City’s lead to three goals.

The onslaught continued unabated. Just six minutes later, in the 54th minute, Floyd Samba struck again to record his second goal of the evening. Following a fluid team move that cut through the Norwich defense with surgical precision, Samba reacted quickest inside the box to finish emphatically, making it 40 for the hosts and effectively sealing the victory with more than half an hour still remaining.

With the result beyond doubt, Enzo Maresca utilized his bench to manage player fatigue and give valuable minutes to younger prospects. The tempo of the match naturally dipped during the final quarter of an hour, but City maintained total control. As the match drifted into stoppage time in the 90th minute, substitute Ryan McAidoo etched his name onto the scoresheet. Seizing an opportunity on the edge of the area, McAidoo unleashed an unstoppable, venomous strike that screamed past the helpless Grimshaw, capping off a 5-0 rout and sealing an unforgettable night for the Etihad faithful.

Tactical Setup and Starting Lineups

Manager Enzo Maresca opted for a dynamic hybrid formation that allowed his side to fluidly transition between a back-four and a back-three in possession, maximizing the creative output of his midfielders and wide players.

Manchester City lined up in a 4-2-3-1 variant:

  • Goalkeeper: Gerinio Rulli
  • Defenders: Rico Lewis, Nico O’Reilly, Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis
  • Midfielders: Rayan Ait-Nouri, Ayyoub Bouaddi, Floyd Samba, Mateo Kovacic
  • Forwards: Rayan Cherki, Allan Elias

Norwich City, recognizing the immense challenge posed by their hosts, deployed a defensively compact 4-4-1-1 structure designed to absorb pressure and utilize the pace of their forwards on the counter:

  • Goalkeeper: Daniel Grimshaw
  • Defenders: Kellen Fisher, Bruno Alves, Harry Darling, Darlin Yongwa
  • Midfielders: Jacob Wright, Sam Field, Anis Ben Slimane, Mathias Kvistgaarden
  • Forwards: Papa Diallo, Ante Crnac

The battle in the middle of the park was largely dictated by Mateo Kovacic and Ayyoub Bouaddi, whose composure under pressure allowed City to recycle possession efficiently and starve Norwich of any sustained periods of momentum.

Background Context of the EFL Cup Campaign

The EFL Cup, historically known as the League Cup, occupies a unique space in English football calendar, offering lower-tier clubs an avenue for giant-killings while presenting elite clubs with an early opportunity to test squad depth and establish winning momentum. For Manchester City, the tournament has frequently served as a proving ground for emerging academy talents to gain high-level competitive experience alongside seasoned first-team stars.

Entering the 2026/2027 edition, City viewed the competition not merely as a secondary priority, but as a vital building block for a successful campaign. The fixture against Norwich City represented a classic cup tie where the heavy favorites needed to maintain professional focus to avoid the pitfalls that often catch complacent teams off guard. By dispatching the Championship side with such authority, City reaffirmed their status as one of the tournament favorites.

Analysis of Implications and Upcoming Fixtures

The immediate consequence of this comprehensive victory is Manchester City’s progression to the fourth round of the EFL Cup, where the stakes will inevitably rise. However, the nature of the draw means that sterner tests lie immediately ahead for the Citizens.

In the next round, Enzo Maresca’s side is scheduled to face Brighton & Hove Albion. The Seagulls booked their ticket to the fourth round following a hard-fought and dramatic 3-2 victory over Manchester United in their respective third-round fixture. The upcoming clash against Brighton promises to be a much more rigorous tactical examination for City, given the high-intensity, possession-based style championed by the south coast club.

From a tactical perspective, the Norwich match provided invaluable data for Maresca. The standout displays from younger squad members like Floyd Samba and Allan Elias demonstrate that City possess exceptional internal solutions for squad rotation. This depth will be crucial as the season progresses into the autumn and winter months, a period characterized by fixture congestion across the Premier League, domestic cups, and European competitions.

Furthermore, maintaining a clean sheet will please the coaching staff, defensive stability being a foundational requirement for sustained trophy contention. While Norwich posed limited offensive threats, the defensive unit’s concentration and organizational discipline remained high throughout the 90 minutes.

As Manchester City turns its attention back to league duties before the high-profile cup encounter with Brighton, the psychological boost of a five-goal victory cannot be overstated. The squad departs the Etihad Stadium with confidence soaring, tactical mechanisms finely tuned, and a clear path charted for their continued domestic campaign.

Amankan Pasokan Listrik, Pemerintah Perlu Beri Kepastian Produksi Tambang

by Iffa Jayyana
written by Iffa Jayyana

The Indonesian government faces a critical juncture in its energy policy as experts and industry stakeholders urge for a fundamental shift in the administration of coal mining operations. With the 2027 energy landscape approaching, analysts from the Evident Institute have called for the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources to expedite the approval process for the Rencana Kerja dan Anggaran Biaya (RKAB)—the annual work plan and budget—to ensure that domestic power generation remains uninterrupted. This call for reform highlights the persistent tension between global market volatility and the non-negotiable requirement of the domestic market obligation (DMO), which mandates that a specific portion of coal production be prioritized for local power plants.

The Urgency of Early RKAB Approval

The core of the issue lies in the administrative timeline for mining operations. Traditionally, the approval of the RKAB has often faced delays, occasionally extending into the commencement of the production year. For the 2027 cycle, Antonius Ivan Sudibyo, Head of Research at the Evident Institute, has proposed a hard deadline of mid-November 2026 for the finalization of these plans.

The logic behind this proposal is rooted in the operational realities of the mining sector. A mining company cannot simply flip a switch to increase or decrease production; it requires complex logistical planning, equipment procurement, labor scheduling, and environmental compliance measures. By finalizing the RKAB by mid-November, the government provides miners with a six-week lead time before the new year begins. This allows for a seamless transition in supply chain management, ensuring that coal stockpiles at power plants—particularly those operated by the state electricity company, PLN—are maintained at safe levels to prevent potential blackouts.

Chronology of DMO Policy Evolution

To understand why this call for early planning is gaining traction, one must examine the evolution of the DMO policy. Since its inception, the DMO has been the primary tool for the Indonesian government to decouple domestic electricity prices from international coal price spikes.

  • 2018: The government introduced the DMO policy, capping the price of coal for domestic power plants at US$70 per ton, even when global prices surged significantly higher.
  • 2020-2021: The COVID-19 pandemic caused significant supply chain disruptions, leading to a temporary decline in coal production. As the global economy reopened in late 2021, the surge in international demand led to a shortage of domestic supply, resulting in a crisis that nearly triggered a national blackout in early 2022.
  • 2022: Following the crisis, the government overhauled the DMO administration, introducing the BLU (Badan Layanan Umum) mechanism to compensate miners for the price gap, aiming to ensure that the domestic supply remains stable regardless of international price fluctuations.
  • 2023-2025: The current focus has shifted from mere emergency response to structural efficiency. The government has attempted to digitize the RKAB submission process, yet delays persist due to verification backlogs and environmental audits.
  • 2026-2027: The current discourse represents the next phase of this policy evolution: transitioning from reactionary annual adjustments to proactive, long-term supply planning.

The Case for Long-Term Supply Assignments

Beyond the timing of the RKAB, the Evident Institute has challenged the conventional wisdom of annual, short-term assignments. Currently, most DMO quotas are assigned on a year-by-year basis. This, according to industry experts, creates a "stop-start" environment that discourages long-term investment in mining infrastructure and logistical efficiency.

Moving toward multi-year or long-term supply contracts would offer significant benefits to all parties involved. For the mining companies, long-term contracts provide the financial predictability required to secure loans for capital-intensive equipment and expansion projects. For the state-owned utility providers, long-term contracts ensure that coal of a consistent calorific value is delivered according to a predictable schedule, reducing the need for emergency spot-market purchases.

"Electricity is a 24/7 service," says Sudibyo. "It does not take holidays, and it does not wait for bureaucratic delays. If the government wants to guarantee that the lights stay on, they must move away from the model of year-to-year uncertainty and toward a framework of long-term partnership with the mining sector."

Economic and Operational Implications

The economic implications of this policy shift are profound. Coal continues to be the backbone of Indonesia’s power grid, accounting for more than 60% of the country’s total electricity generation. As Indonesia pursues its ambitious "Golden Indonesia 2045" goals, which include significant industrialization and infrastructure development, the demand for stable, affordable electricity is projected to grow exponentially.

If the RKAB process remains inefficient, the risk of "supply-demand mismatch" increases. In a worst-case scenario, if domestic miners are unable to meet their DMO requirements due to late planning or regulatory uncertainty, the state is forced to intervene through emergency measures, which often include export bans. While effective in the short term, such bans are disruptive to international trade relations and can negatively impact the national revenue derived from coal exports.

Furthermore, the integration of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards adds another layer of complexity. Modern mining operations must comply with rigorous reclamation and rehabilitation standards. Early planning allows companies to better integrate these environmental obligations into their production schedules, rather than treating them as an afterthought in a rush to meet year-end production targets.

Perspectives from the Industry and Government

While the government has yet to issue an official response regarding the specific mid-November deadline proposal, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has historically maintained that the RKAB process must be rigorous to prevent illegal mining and ensure royalty compliance.

Industry representatives, speaking on condition of anonymity, have expressed broad support for the Evident Institute’s position. Many executives argue that the administrative burden of the current system is the single greatest obstacle to efficient production. They suggest that if the government were to adopt a "risk-based" verification system—whereby compliant companies with a history of meeting their DMO quotas receive expedited approval—the entire process could be streamlined significantly.

Future Outlook: Building Resilience

The push for administrative reform in the coal sector is part of a larger conversation about energy resilience. As the global energy transition progresses, Indonesia is under pressure to balance its dependence on coal with its commitment to carbon reduction targets. However, in the interim, ensuring the reliability of the current energy mix is paramount.

The recommendation to move toward long-term assignments and earlier planning cycles for 2027 is not merely a bureaucratic suggestion; it is a strategic imperative. By providing clarity, the government can foster a more stable investment climate, improve the operational efficiency of the state’s power infrastructure, and ultimately protect the national economy from the volatility of the global energy market.

As 2026 progresses, the eyes of the mining industry will be on the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. Whether the government will adopt these structural changes or continue with the current annual cycle remains to be seen. However, the consensus among analysts is clear: the era of managing the nation’s primary energy source through annual, last-minute decision-making is no longer sustainable in a modern, rapidly developing economy.

In conclusion, the call for early RKAB approval and long-term production assignments reflects a growing maturity in the dialogue between the state and the private sector. By aligning administrative timelines with the operational realities of the mining industry, Indonesia can secure its energy future, stabilize the cost of electricity for its citizens, and provide a foundation for the industrial growth that the nation aims to achieve by 2027 and beyond. The government’s response to these proposals will serve as a bellwether for its commitment to regulatory efficiency and long-term energy security.

Jakarta, Indonesia — PT Pelita Air Service, a subsidiary of state-owned energy giant PT Pertamina (Persero), has demonstrated exceptional performance in maintaining operational reliability and service quality over the past year. This consistent dedication has not only resonated positively among its passengers but has also caught the attention of media monitoring analysts, culminating in a prestigious industry accolade. According to recent research conducted by media intelligence firm The Iconomics, Pelita Air achieved a remarkable 81 percent positive sentiment score across national media coverage over the trailing twelve-month period.

This impressive metric served as the foundational pillar for the airline to clinch the esteemed Top SOE Subsidiaries Award 2026 within the transportation category, presented by The Iconomics. The recognition underscores the carrier’s strategic alignment between its internal service delivery enhancements and its external public profile, validating the management’s ongoing commitment to transparency, customer satisfaction, and corporate governance.

In addition to the high positive sentiment score, the research highlighted another critical metric: Pelita Air’s Related News percentage reached an astounding 95.8 percent. Within the landscape of media analytics, a high Related News score indicates that media coverage is substantively focused on the core business activities, operational updates, and strategic milestones of the company, rather than merely mentioning the corporate name in passing. This signifies that public discourse surrounding Pelita Air is deeply rooted in its actual contributions to the aviation sector, encompassing flight punctuality, network expansion initiatives, and passenger-centric innovations.

Responding to Media Recognition and Corporate Milestones

Reacting to the accolade, Pelita Air President Director Faik Fahmi expressed profound gratitude toward the press corps and media practitioners who have diligently monitored the airline’s developmental journey. He emphasized that the positive media traction is a direct reflection of the hard work put forth by the entire organization to deliver dependable air travel solutions to the public.

"For us, this achievement is not merely about how Pelita Air is portrayed in the news, but rather about how our operational performance and service standards are genuinely reflected within media reporting," Faik stated in an official release on Thursday, September 17, 2026. "We deeply appreciate the press corps for continually overseeing Pelita Air’s journey and providing a transparent platform for the public to understand the various initiatives we undertake to present reliable flight services."

Faik further elaborated that media coverage concerning Pelita Air throughout the research timeframe spanned a wide array of operational dimensions. These included the airline’s rigorous adherence to punctuality, the systematic broadening of its domestic route network to foster regional connectivity, and continuous upgrades to its in-flight and ground-handling customer service frameworks.

The recognition from The Iconomics arrives at a poignant time, coinciding with the nationwide commemoration of National Transportation Day 2026, which is observed annually on September 17. The overarching theme for the 2026 National Transportation Day is "Connecting Indonesia for a More Advanced Future." For Pelita Air, the alignment between this national celebration and its corporate achievements highlights the strategic role that modern, reliable commercial airlines play in bridging the vast geographical expanses of the Indonesian archipelago.

"The momentum of National Transportation Day reminds us that connectivity is not just about linking one region to another, but also about delivering a safe, reliable, and comfortable journey for the community," Faik added. "For Pelita Air, maintaining operational reliability and service quality is an integral part of our contribution to continuously connecting Indonesia and supporting the advancement of national transportation."

Building on a Foundation of Punctuality and Operational Excellence

The accolades received by Pelita Air in September 2026 are part of a broader, sustained trajectory of operational excellence. Just weeks prior to receiving the Top SOE Subsidiaries Award, the airline secured another monumental industry milestone. On September 2, 2026, Pelita Air was awarded the prestigious Best On-Time Performance (OTP) 2026 accolade by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation under the Ministry of Transportation of the Republic of Indonesia.

Significantly, this marked the second consecutive year that Pelita Air captured the Best On-Time Performance title, reinforcing its reputation as one of the most punctual carriers operating within the fiercely competitive domestic aviation market. In an industry where flight delays, technical disruptions, and scheduling bottlenecks frequently draw consumer frustration, Pelita Air’s ability to consistently maintain high punctuality standards has served as a powerful differentiator.

Industry analysts point out that achieving superior On-Time Performance requires meticulous fleet management, proactive maintenance protocols, efficient turnaround times at airports, and disciplined crew scheduling. For a relatively young commercial airline brand—which relaunched its scheduled commercial flights in 2022 after decades primarily serving charter and specialized oil and gas sector operations—maintaining top-tier punctuality while scaling up capacity is a notable operational feat.

Faik emphasized that these successive awards are not viewed by management as a finish line, but rather as a validation of the airline’s core philosophy regarding corporate reputation. "Reputation is built upon what we genuinely do and what is authentically experienced by our customers," Faik noted. "Therefore, we will continuously maintain operational reliability and elevate service quality on a consistent basis. Public trust is a heavy responsibility that we must safeguard at all costs."

Methodological Insights: Understanding The Iconomics SOE Awards

The Top SOE Subsidiaries Award 2026, conferred upon Pelita Air, is derived from comprehensive and systematic media monitoring methodologies executed by The Iconomics research team. The evaluation framework utilizes quantitative and qualitative assessments of news coverage across a vast array of print, online, and broadcast media outlets.

State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) and their respective subsidiaries operating across diverse sectors—including finance, infrastructure, telecommunications, energy, and transportation—are subjected to rigorous scrutiny. The evaluation model places heavy emphasis on two primary indicators: Sentiment Analysis and Related News Metrics.

Sentiment Analysis evaluates whether the tone of public reporting leans positive, neutral, or negative, providing an objective gauge of public perception and corporate reputation. Meanwhile, the Related News metric filters out superficial mentions, ensuring that companies are evaluated based on substantive reporting regarding their business operations, financial health, strategic expansions, and regulatory compliances.

By achieving an 81 percent positive sentiment score alongside a 95.8 percent Related News score, Pelita Air outpaced numerous peers in the transportation sector. This statistical validation demonstrates that the airline’s public relations strategies are well-aligned with its actual operational performance, effectively communicating its value proposition to stakeholders, regulatory bodies, and the flying public.

The Broader Economic Implications and Industry Context

Pelita Air’s steady rise within the Indonesian commercial aviation landscape carries significant broader economic and strategic implications. As an affiliate of PT Pertamina (Persero), the airline benefits from strong corporate backing, yet it operates in a highly dynamic and competitive market environment that demands commercial agility, stringent safety compliance, and disciplined financial management.

Following the post-pandemic recovery phase, Indonesia’s domestic aviation sector has experienced robust demand growth, driven by the revival of business travel, tourism, and family mobility across the country’s thousands of islands. However, airlines operating in Indonesia face persistent macro-environmental challenges, including volatile global jet fuel prices, foreign exchange fluctuations impacting aircraft leasing and maintenance costs, and complex geographical infrastructural hurdles.

Within this challenging ecosystem, punctuality and operational reliability are not merely customer service metrics; they are essential drivers of operational efficiency and economic viability. Delays and scheduling inefficiencies compound operating costs and erode consumer confidence. Conversely, high On-Time Performance translates to optimized aircraft utilization, reduced ground idle times, and higher customer retention rates.

Furthermore, Pelita Air’s strategic focus on expanding its domestic route network directly supports the Indonesian government’s overarching vision of equitable regional development and enhanced national connectivity. By entering high-demand domestic corridors and maintaining dependable flight schedules, the airline helps alleviate capacity constraints, moderates ticket price volatility through healthy market competition, and facilitates smoother flows of goods, services, and human capital.

Strategic Outlook and Future Commitments

Looking ahead, the leadership team at Pelita Air remains focused on sustainable growth, safety primacy, and customer-centric innovation. As the airline navigates the remainder of 2026 and prepares for future operational expansion, maintaining the rigorous standards that earned it the Best On-Time Performance and Top SOE Subsidiaries awards will remain paramount.

The dual recognition received in September 2026 serves as a powerful endorsement of the airline’s strategic direction. By harmonizing robust operational execution with transparent public communication and positive media engagement, Pelita Air has successfully positioned itself as a trusted and reliable pillar of Indonesia’s national transportation infrastructure.

As Indonesia continues to pursue its developmental goals under the banner of enhanced connectivity and economic integration, carriers like Pelita Air will undoubtedly play a critical role. Backed by institutional strength from its parent company Pertamina, reinforced by consecutive government awards for punctuality, and validated by overwhelmingly positive public sentiment, Pelita Air is well-positioned to navigate the evolving complexities of the modern aviation industry while continuing to safely and reliably connect the people of Indonesia.

Gubernur Banten Remembers Final Hours of Five Missing Journalists Before Search Operation in Sunda Strait Concludes

by Nana Muazin
written by Nana Muazin

The formal termination of search and rescue operations for five journalists and three crew members missing in the turbulent waters surrounding the Anak Krakatau volcano in the Sunda Strait has left a profound sense of grief across the region, most notably for Banten Governor Andra Soni. What began as a routine monitoring mission evolved into an unforgettable tragedy, highlighted by the realization that the governor had engaged in a direct, face-to-face dialogue with the victims less than 24 hours before they vanished.

The incident, which unfolded in early September 2026, has brought renewed attention to the inherent dangers faced by frontline media workers covering environmental hazards, maritime incidents, and volatile geological phenomena. As families, colleagues, and government officials come to terms with the cessation of active rescue efforts, the collective focus has shifted toward honoring the dedication of those lost while examining the rigorous conditions under which modern journalism operates in disaster-prone regions of Indonesia.

The Final Encounter at Pos Pantau Pasauran

The tragedy gained a deeply personal dimension for Governor Andra Soni, who reflected on his final interaction with the missing news professionals during an exclusive interview. The encounter took place at the Pasauran Monitoring Post (Pos Pantau Pasauran) located in the Serang Regency of Banten Province. At the time of the meeting, the atmosphere was focused on regional observation and public safety regarding the activity of the nearby Anak Krakatau volcanic complex.

"It feels deeply personal to me because, less than 24 hours before they were declared missing, those five journalist friends had spent time discussing matters with me at the Pasauran Monitoring Post in Serang Regency," Andra Soni stated during his interview.

While formal introductions and the exchange of names were brief amid the demanding pace of field operations, the governor noted that the brief interaction left a lasting impression. He recalled witnessing firsthand the palpable enthusiasm, professional integrity, and personal commitment exhibited by the reporters as they gathered information on the ground.

"We discussed many things, and although we did not have the opportunity to learn each other’s names in depth, I could clearly see their passion, their dedication, and the sheer sincerity they brought to their journalistic work," the governor added, underscoring the vital role reporters play in bridging the gap between remote natural phenomena and public awareness.

Chronology of Events: From Monitoring Post to the Sunda Strait

The sequence of events leading to the declaration of the missing persons and the subsequent closure of the search operation forms a sobering timeline of maritime hazard and emergency response efforts.

On Sunday, September 6, 2026, the group of five journalists, accompanied by three boat crew members (ABK), embarked on a maritime reporting assignment. Their objective was to document conditions around the Anak Krakatau archipelago, a notoriously active volcanic island situated in the waters of the Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra. Prior to setting sail, the team had visited regional observation posts, including the Pasauran facility where they conferred with local authorities and Governor Andra Soni.

By Monday, September 7, 2026, concern grew when the vessel failed to check in at scheduled intervals and did not return from the designated waters. Initial reports triggered localized alerts, prompting maritime authorities to coordinate with regional disaster management agencies.

By Tuesday, September 8, 2026, a joint search and rescue (SAR) operation was officially launched. The mobilization involved units from the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), the Indonesian Navy (TNI AL), the Water Police (Polairud), alongside local volunteers and fishing communities who scoured the maritime boundaries surrounding the volcano.

For over a week, rescue teams battled challenging oceanic conditions, unpredictable weather patterns, and strong currents characteristic of the Sunda Strait. Despite deploying specialized vessels, rubber boats, and aerial reconnaissance assets, the extensive sweeps failed to locate the vessel or any definitive traces of the eight individuals on board.

On Thursday, September 17, 2026, following exhaustive protocols that exceeded standard search durations for open-water maritime incidents—and facing diminishing probabilities of survival given the harsh marine environment—authorities officially announced the cessation of active search operations.

Contextualizing the Hazards of the Sunda Strait and Anak Krakatau

The location of the incident, the Sunda Strait and the Anak Krakatau complex, is historically recognized as one of the most dynamic and hazardous maritime zones in the Indonesian archipelago. Anak Krakatau, which translates to "Child of Krakatoa," emerged from the caldera of the infamous 1883 eruption of Krakatoa and has remained continuously active, characterized by frequent Strombolian eruptions, ash explosions, and occasional flank collapses that can generate localized tsunamis.

Navigating the waters surrounding the volcano requires precise seamanship and continuous monitoring of maritime weather advisories. The strait connects the Java Sea to the Indian Ocean, resulting in complex tidal currents, sudden squalls, and high wave activities that can overwhelm small or medium-sized vessels. For journalists covering geological events, obtaining real-time footage or data often necessitates venturing into these high-risk zones, balancing the public’s right to information against severe physical dangers.

Safety experts note that maritime journalism in volcanic zones presents compounded risks. Not only must reporters contend with unpredictable surface weather, but they also face atmospheric hazards such as toxic volcanic gases, floating pumice rafts that can clog engine intakes, and sudden underwater seismic activity capable of producing abrupt sea surges.

Official Responses and Institutional Support

The closure of the SAR operation has prompted widespread expressions of condolence from media organizations, press freedom advocates, and government institutions across Indonesia.

The Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI) and the Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI) issued statements expressing deep sorrow over the loss of their colleagues. Representatives emphasized the immense sacrifices made by field reporters who routinely place themselves in harm’s way to document natural disasters and public safety issues. Industry leaders have reiterated calls for enhanced safety protocols, mandatory maritime survival training, and stricter adherence to weather and navigation warnings for media personnel undertaking assignments in high-risk environments.

Governor Andra Soni, speaking on behalf of the provincial government of Banten, extended his deepest sympathies to the families of the missing journalists and crew members. He assured the public that the regional administration would provide necessary administrative assistance and psychosocial support to the bereaved families during this difficult transition.

"Our thoughts and prayers remain with the families of the journalists and the boat crew members. Their dedication to informing the public will not be forgotten, and this tragedy serves as a solemn reminder of the immense risks our media workers shoulder every single day," Andra Soni remarked.

Broader Implications for Safety and Media Operations

The tragic disappearance of the five journalists and three crew members in the Sunda Strait is expected to catalyze a thorough review of safety standards governing field journalism in Indonesia. As climate change increases the frequency of extreme weather events and geological activity remains a constant threat along the Pacific Ring of Fire, media houses are under mounting pressure to institutionalize rigorous risk-assessment procedures.

Key areas currently under discussion among media management and safety coordinators include:

  • Mandatory Pre-Deployment Briefings: Ensuring all reporting teams comprehensively understand local maritime and geological hazards before embarking on field assignments.
  • Enhanced Communication Protocols: Requiring satellite communication devices or real-time GPS tracking for teams operating in remote or open-water environments where cellular signals fail.
  • Collaboration with Authorities: Strengthening information-sharing networks between newsrooms, local disaster mitigation agencies (BPBD), and search and rescue coordinators to ensure rapid emergency response triggers.

While active search operations have formally ceased, the legacy of the missing journalists—marked by their final hours of earnest discussion and commitment to their craft at the Pasauran Monitoring Post—remains etched in the collective memory of the Banten administration and the broader Indonesian press community.

Muhammadiyah Highlights Gender Equality and Financial Independence in Modern Islamic Family Dynamics

by Rifan Muazin
written by Rifan Muazin

The debate surrounding marital roles, financial contributions, and domestic authority within contemporary Muslim households has gained renewed academic and theological attention. Speaking at the weekly Pengajian Tarjih forum, Lailatis Syarifah, a prominent member of the Tarjih and Tajdid Council of the Muhammadiyah Central Leadership, delivered a comprehensive discourse addressing the complex intersections of income disparity, spousal obedience, and Islamic jurisprudence. The session, held on Wednesday, September 16, directly challenged oversimplified interpretations of marital hierarchies, asserting that a husband’s financial standing does not dictate a wife’s moral obligation of obedience, nor does it diminish his inherent dignity as a partner.

As modern socio-economic landscapes evolve, shifting away from traditional single-earner household models, religious institutions are increasingly called upon to provide relevant guidance. The discourse hosted by Muhammadiyah—one of Indonesia’s largest and most influential Islamic organizations—serves as a vital theological framework for navigating the economic and social realities of contemporary families, where dual-income households, female breadwinners, and economically vulnerable spouses are becoming increasingly commonplace.

The Evolving Economic Reality of the Modern Household

The core of Syarifah’s address focused on dismantling the rigid, binary view of gender roles that has historically dominated domestic discourse. In many traditional settings, domestic authority is directly correlated with financial contribution: the primary earner holds ultimate decision-making power, while the dependent partner assumes a subordinate role. However, Syarifah emphasized that family structures are rarely uniform.

Modern households exist on a wide spectrum of economic arrangements. While traditional models feature husbands as the primary providers, contemporary society frequently witnesses households where wives outearn their husbands, couples share financial burdens equally through dual incomes, or husbands face unemployment while wives shoulder the entirety of the financial responsibility.

According to labor statistics and sociological studies across Southeast Asia, women’s participation in the formal workforce has risen steadily over the past few decades. This shift has altered traditional power dynamics within the home. Syarifah cautioned against applying blanket theological rulings to diverse economic realities without careful consideration. Viewing family dynamics through a simplistic lens, she noted, reduces complex human relationships to a rigid black-and-white dichotomy that fails to account for modern socio-economic pressures.

Foundational Principles of the Sakinah Family in Muhammadiyah Teachings

To construct a resilient and harmonious household—referred to in Islamic tradition as a sakinah (tranquil) family—Muhammadiyah relies on a specific set of foundational principles. These tenets are designed to protect the rights, dignities, and responsibilities of both spouses equally, moving away from patriarchal authoritarianism toward a framework rooted in mutual respect and divine justice.

The framework is anchored by five primary pillars: karamah insaniah (human dignity), equality, justice, mawaddah wa rahmah (love and compassion), and the fulfillment of both worldly and spiritual needs.

1. Karamah Insaniah (Human Dignity)

The principle of karamah insaniah dictates that both husband and wife share an equal and inherent dignity as human beings created by God. Syarifah referenced Surah Al-Isra, verse 70, which highlights the divine honor bestowed upon all humankind (Walaqad karramna bani adama). In the context of marriage, this principle ensures that the institution of matrimony does not strip away the personal dignity or autonomy of either partner. No spouse holds a divine right to subjugate or degrade the other based on gender or economic contribution.

2. The Principle of Equality

Building upon human dignity, the principle of equality asserts that husband and wife are partners of equal value. Syarifah clarified that equality does not necessitate identical roles; rather, it recognizes that partners may assume different responsibilities that are designed to complement one another rather than establish a hierarchy of worth.

3. Justice in Rights and Obligations

Justice within the Muhammadiyah family framework requires that rights and obligations be distributed fairly, taking into account the capabilities, needs, and responsibilities of each individual. This comprehensive view of justice extends beyond material financial support to encompass emotional, spiritual, and psychological well-being. It includes mutual obligations regarding religious education, emotional support, and shared nurturing within the home.

Redefining Spousal Obedience and Financial Contributions

Within traditional Islamic jurisprudence, the concept of taat (obedience) by a wife toward her husband has often been a subject of intense debate. Syarifah provided a nuanced clarification, stating that a wife’s obedience is not absolute or unconditional; rather, it is strictly bound by the parameters of truth and goodness (kebenaran dan kebaikan).

A wife is obligated to respect and obey her husband only within matters that align with Islamic ethical principles and moral rectitude. Furthermore, this obedience is reciprocal with the husband’s fulfillment of his duties. If a husband commands something unjust, harmful, or contrary to Islamic values, the obligation of obedience ceases.

Moreover, obedience does not mean silence. The framework outlined during the forum highlights that wives retain the right—and the duty—to respectfully advise, remind, and engage in constructive dialogue (makruf) when a husband falters or neglects his responsibilities. Concurrently, wives are expected to maintain the family’s honor, protect shared assets, and treat their spouses with kindness and courtesy.

On the other side of the equation, the husband retains his core religious obligation to provide financial maintenance (nafkah) to the best of his ability. However, Syarifah strongly emphasized decoupling financial contribution from personal worth and domestic authority.

"Even if a husband possesses minimal wealth, it does not diminish his honor as a human being and head of the household," Syarifah stated. "Conversely, if a wife or husband possesses significant wealth, it does not grant them absolute power or autocratic control over the family."

Collaborative Economic Models in the Family

Addressing situations where husbands face financial hardship or unemployment, Syarifah noted that Islamic jurisprudence provides flexible mechanisms for family survival. When a husband is temporarily or permanently unable to fulfill financial obligations single-handedly, the responsibility of providing for the household can be shared.

This cooperative approach relies on mutual consultation (musyawarah) and explicit agreement between spouses. Far from signaling a breakdown of traditional gender roles, this flexibility is viewed as a practical implementation of Islamic justice, ensuring that the survival and well-being of the family unit take precedence over rigid social expectations.

Sociological analysts observing the trajectory of family laws in Indonesia note that organizations like Muhammadiyah play a critical role in bridging classical Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh) with modern human rights standards. By emphasizing mutual consultation, shared responsibility, and the inherent dignity of both spouses, progressive religious rulings help mitigate domestic friction arising from economic shifts.

Broader Implications for Indonesian Society

The articulation of these progressive yet traditionally grounded family principles carries significant implications for Indonesian society. As urban migration, shifting employment markets, and economic pressures continue to transform the domestic landscape, families face unprecedented stressors. Traditional models that place the entire financial burden on men while restricting women to domestic spheres are increasingly untenable for a large segment of the population.

By validating the economic contributions of women and decoupling financial status from moral authority, Muhammadiyah’s Tarjih and Tajdid Council offers a theological blueprint that helps reduce domestic conflict, mental health pressures associated with unrealistic gender expectations, and marital instability.

Ultimately, the Muhammadiyah discourse underscores that a tranquil and prosperous family (keluarga sakinah) is not forged through authoritarian control or financial dominance. Instead, it is built upon a foundation of shared trust, divine justice, mutual respect, and the willingness of both partners to fulfill their respective covenants before God and each other.

Bagaimana Jawaban Saat Anak Bertanya Tentang Hari Kiamat?

by Muslim
written by Muslim

The theological concept of the end of days—known in Islamic tradition as Yawm al-Qiyamah—frequently emerges as a challenging topic for parents when children begin their formative years of religious education. As children progress through their study of the Five Pillars of Islam, the fifth pillar, which mandates belief in the Day of Judgment, naturally invites curiosity. Children, observing the world around them and consuming various media—ranging from school textbooks to library materials that often depict the end of the world in visceral, sometimes terrifying imagery—frequently ask their parents why such a catastrophic event is necessary. Providing a developmentally appropriate, intellectually sound, and spiritually grounded answer requires a delicate balance between honesty and pedagogical wisdom.

The Theological Context of the End of Days

In Islamic eschatology, the Day of Judgment is not merely a cataclysmic end but a necessary transition. It serves as the ultimate venue for divine justice. The central challenge for parents is explaining this concept without instilling existential dread in the child. Traditional depictions often focus on the physical destruction of the universe, referencing Quranic verses that describe mountains being scattered like wool and the heavens being rent asunder. While these descriptions emphasize the power of the Creator, they can be overwhelming for a young mind.

To address this, scholars suggest shifting the focus from the destruction itself to the underlying purpose of the event. The conversation should center on the concept of "Adalah" (Divine Justice). In a world where victims of injustice often do not see their aggressors punished and where righteous individuals often suffer, the human moral compass naturally yearns for a higher court of appeals.

The Philosophical Necessity of Divine Justice

Professor Quraish Shihab, a prominent scholar and author of Islam yang Saya Anut; Dasar-dasar Islam, emphasizes that the belief in the afterlife is essentially an assertion of justice. He argues that human logic, when contemplating the disparities of life, demands a "day of reckoning." If the world were to end without a final settlement of accounts, the concept of moral accountability would lose its foundation.

From a sociological perspective, this belief acts as a stabilizer. It encourages ethical behavior by providing a long-term framework for human conduct. When explaining this to a child, parents can frame the Day of Judgment as the moment when the "scales are balanced." By contrasting the actions of a person who brings joy and help to others with those who inflict harm, parents can illustrate that the concept of the afterlife is the ultimate assurance that kindness is never truly lost and that malevolence is not ignored.

Chronology and the Concept of Transition

The narrative of the end of days is categorized into distinct phases within Islamic doctrine, which helps in structuring a more granular explanation for older children. The timeline is generally divided into:

  1. The Minor Signs (Al-Alamat al-Sughra): These are events occurring over a long duration, signaling the approach of the end. Examples often cited include the increase in ignorance, the prevalence of material obsession, and societal shifts in behavioral norms.
  2. The Major Signs (Al-Alamat al-Kubra): These involve cataclysmic natural events and supernatural occurrences, such as the rising of the sun from the west and the emergence of historical figures prophesied in sacred texts.
  3. The Resurrection (Al-Ba’th): The point at which all individuals are held accountable for their stewardship of the earth and their treatment of fellow beings.

By explaining this as a transition rather than a sudden cessation, parents can help children understand that death and the end of the world are simply parts of a larger cycle of existence. This perspective moves away from fear-based teaching and toward a more constructive understanding of responsibility.

Data-Driven Perspectives on Religious Education

Educational psychology suggests that how children perceive abstract concepts like "death" or "the end of time" is heavily influenced by the cognitive maturity of the child. According to Piaget’s stages of development, children in the pre-operational stage (ages 2-7) struggle with abstract time, while those in the concrete operational stage (ages 7-11) begin to grasp cause-and-effect relationships.

Research into religious development indicates that children who are provided with rational and empathetic explanations for eschatological questions show less anxiety regarding the future. Instead of using the fear of "hellfire" as a deterrent, modern child-rearing advice in Islamic pedagogy encourages focusing on the "mercy of God." By emphasizing that the Creator is "Al-Adl" (The Just) and "Ar-Rahman" (The Merciful), parents can reassure their children that the final judgment is a process overseen by an entity that understands the human struggle.

Addressing Common Misconceptions

A frequent point of confusion for children stems from the graphic imagery found in popular literature or social media. Parents are advised to filter these narratives. It is essential to explain that such descriptions are metaphors meant to emphasize the gravity of choices, rather than literal, daily concerns for the average person.

Furthermore, when children ask if the end is near—often prompted by news of natural disasters or current events—it is important to remain factual. Islamic tradition holds that the timing of the end is knowledge reserved solely for the Creator. Encouraging children to focus on the "here and now"—on being good students, kind friends, and helpful family members—is a more constructive response than speculating on the timing of the apocalypse.

Broader Implications and Societal Impact

The way parents discuss these topics has long-term implications for a child’s worldview. A healthy understanding of the afterlife fosters:

  • Moral Responsibility: Understanding that there is a final audit of one’s life encourages children to be more conscious of their daily choices.
  • Resilience: For children facing hardship or witnessing injustice, the belief that "justice will be served" provides a profound sense of psychological security and hope.
  • Empathy: Recognizing that everyone is accountable to the same standard encourages individuals to treat others with greater compassion, as the "scales of justice" are universal.

Practical Guidelines for Parents

When a child initiates a conversation about the end of the world, parents should consider the following steps:

  1. Active Listening: Allow the child to express what they have heard or what specifically is worrying them. Often, the child is not asking about the theology, but expressing a fear of losing their current world.
  2. Age-Appropriate Language: Avoid complex theological jargon. Use analogies that relate to the child’s daily life, such as the concept of a report card or a teacher grading exams.
  3. Emphasis on Positive Actions: Reframe the discussion from the "punishment" of the wicked to the "reward" of the righteous. This aligns with the Islamic focus on hope (raja’).
  4. Consistency: Ensure that the religious education provided at home is consistent with the values taught in schools to prevent cognitive dissonance.

Conclusion: A Foundation of Hope

The necessity of the Day of Judgment, when presented with care, serves as the ultimate anchor for morality. It is the framework through which human beings—regardless of their station in life—find the motivation to pursue goodness. For the child, understanding the end of the world is not about living in anticipation of destruction, but about learning the value of their time, their relationships, and their integrity. By transitioning the conversation from "why must the world end?" to "how should we live while we are here?", parents can empower their children to grow into conscious, compassionate, and ethically grounded adults. The end of the world, in this light, is not a subject of terror, but a reminder of the infinite value of human life and the enduring nature of justice.
